Spatiotemporal data can be represented as a process over a graph, which captures their spatial relationships either explicitly or implicitly. How to leverage such a structure for learning representations is one of the key challenges when working with graphs. In this paper, we represent the spatiotemporal relationships through product graphs and develop a first principle graph-time convolutional neural network (GTCNN). The GTCNN is a compositional architecture with each layer comprising a graph-time convolutional module, a graph-time pooling module, and a nonlinearity. We develop a graph-time convolutional filter by following the shift-and-sum principles of the convolutional operator to learn higher-level features over the product graph. The product graph itself is parametric so that we can learn also the spatiotemporal coupling from data. We develop a zero-pad pooling that preserves the spatial graph (the prior about the data) while reducing the number of active nodes and the parameters. Experimental results with synthetic and real data corroborate the different components and compare with baseline and state-of-the-art solutions.
With technological advancements and the exponential growth of data, we have been unfolding different capabilities of neural networks in different sectors. In this paper, I have tried to use a specific type of Neural Network known as Convolutional Neural Network(CNN/ConvNet) in the stock market. In other words, I have tried to construct and train a convolutional neural network on past stock prices data and then tried to predict the movement of stock price i.e. whether the stock price would rise or fall, in the coming time.
Current deep convolutional networks are fixed in their topology. We explore the possibilites of making the convolutional topology a parameter itself by combining NeuroEvolution of Augmenting Topologies (NEAT) with Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and propose such a system using blocks of Residual Networks (ResNets). We then explain how our suggested system can only be built once additional optimizations have been made, as genetic algorithms are way more demanding than training per backpropagation. On the way there we explain most of those buzzwords and offer a gentle and brief introduction…
Recent approaches based on artificial neural networks (ANNs) have shown promising results for short-text classification. However, many short texts occur in sequences (e.g., sentences in a document or utterances in a dialog), and most existing ANN-based systems do not leverage the preceding short texts when classifying a subsequent one. In this work, we present a model based on recurrent neural networks and convolutional neural networks that incorporates the preceding short texts. Our model achieves state-of-the-art results on three different datasets for dialog act prediction.
In sentence modeling and classification, convolutional neural network approaches have recently achieved state-of-the-art results, but all such efforts process word vectors sequentially and neglect long-distance dependencies. To exploit both deep learning and linguistic structures, we propose a tree-based convolutional neural network model which exploit various long-distance relationships between words. Our model improves the sequential baselines on all three sentiment and question classification tasks, and achieves the highest published accuracy on TREC.
A convolutional neural network is proposed to mitigate fiber transmission effects, achieving a five-fold reduction in trainable parameters compared to alternative equalizers, and 3.5 dB improvement in MSE compared to DBP with comparable complexity.

Deep neural networks can suffer from the exploding and vanishing activation problem, in which the networks fail to train properly because the neural signals either amplify or attenuate across the layers and become saturated. While other normalization methods aim to fix the stated problem, most of them have inference speed penalties in those applications that require running averages of the neural activations. Here we extend the unitary framework based on Lie algebra to neural networks of any dimensionalities, overcoming the major constraints of the prior arts that limit synaptic weights to be …

In many robotics and VR/AR applications, 3D-videos are readily-available sources of input (a continuous sequence of depth images, or LIDAR scans). However, those 3D-videos are processed frame-by-frame either through 2D convnets or 3D perception algorithms. In this work, we propose 4-dimensional convolutional neural networks for spatio-temporal perception that can directly process such 3D-videos using high-dimensional convolutions. For this, we adopt sparse tensors and propose the generalized sparse convolution that encompasses all discrete convolutions. To implement the generalized sparse conv…

Deep convolutional neural networks take GPU days of compute time to train on large data sets. Pedestrian detection for self driving cars requires very low latency. Image recognition for mobile phones is constrained by limited processing resources. The success of convolutional neural networks in these situations is limited by how fast we can compute them. Conventional FFT based convolution is fast for large filters, but state of the art convolutional neural networks use small, 3x3 filters. We introduce a new class of fast algorithms for convolutional neural networks using Winograd's minimal fil…

Graph convolutional networks are becoming indispensable for deep learning from graph-structured data. Most of the existing graph convolutional networks share two big shortcomings. First, they are essentially low-pass filters, thus the potentially useful middle and high frequency band of graph signals are ignored. Second, the bandwidth of existing graph convolutional filters is fixed. Parameters of a graph convolutional filter only transform the graph inputs without changing the curvature of a graph convolutional filter function. In reality, we are uncertain about whether we should retain or cu…

Graph convolutional neural networks (GCNNs) are a powerful extension of deep learning techniques to graph-structured data problems. We empirically evaluate several pooling methods for GCNNs, and combinations of those graph pooling methods with three different architectures: GCN, TAGCN, and GraphSAGE. We confirm that graph pooling, especially DiffPool, improves classification accuracy on popular graph classification datasets and find that, on average, TAGCN achieves comparable or better accuracy than GCN and GraphSAGE, particularly for datasets with larger and sparser graph structures.

We propose three new regularization terms for a convolutional kernel tensor to constrain the singular values of each transformation matrix. We show how to carry out the gradient type methods, which provides new insight about the training of convolu…

By representing the nonlinear convolutional filters as vectors in a reproducing kernel Hilbert space, the CNN parameters can be represented as a low-rank matrix, which can be relaxed to obtain a convex optimization problem. For learning two-layer convolutional neural networks, we prove that the generalization error obtained by a convexified CNN converges to that of the best possible CNN. Ensemble learning is a method of combining multiple trained models to improve model accuracy. We propose the usage of such methods, specifically ensemble average, inside Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architectures by replacing the single convolutional layers with Inner Average Ensembles (IEA) of multiple convolutional layers. Empirical results on different benchmarking datasets show that CNN models using IEA outperform those with regular convolutional layers. A visual and a similarity score analysis of the features generated from IEA explains why it boosts the model performance.
