This work presents a quantum convolutional neural network (QCNN) for the classification of high energy physics events. The proposed model is tested using a simulated dataset from the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment. The proposed architecture demonstrates the quantum advantage of learning faster than the classical convolutional neural networks (CNNs) under a similar number of parameters. In addition to faster convergence, the QCNN achieves greater test accuracy compared to CNNs. Based on experimental results, it is a promising direction to study the application of QCNN and other quantum machine learning models in high energy physics and additional scientific fields.
With technological advancements and the exponential growth of data, we have been unfolding different capabilities of neural networks in different sectors. In this paper, I have tried to use a specific type of Neural Network known as Convolutional Neural Network(CNN/ConvNet) in the stock market. In other words, I have tried to construct and train a convolutional neural network on past stock prices data and then tried to predict the movement of stock price i.e. whether the stock price would rise or fall, in the coming time.
In sentence modeling and classification, convolutional neural network approaches have recently achieved state-of-the-art results, but all such efforts process word vectors sequentially and neglect long-distance dependencies. To exploit both deep learning and linguistic structures, we propose a tree-based convolutional neural network model which exploit various long-distance relationships between words. Our model improves the sequential baselines on all three sentiment and question classification tasks, and achieves the highest published accuracy on TREC.

Deep neural networks can suffer from the exploding and vanishing activation problem, in which the networks fail to train properly because the neural signals either amplify or attenuate across the layers and become saturated. While other normalization methods aim to fix the stated problem, most of them have inference speed penalties in those applications that require running averages of the neural activations. Here we extend the unitary framework based on Lie algebra to neural networks of any dimensionalities, overcoming the major constraints of the prior arts that limit synaptic weights to be …

Our algorithm works for a general class of (potentially overlapping) patches, including commonly used structures for computer vision tasks. Our algorithm draws ideas from (1) isotonic regression for learning neural networks and (2) landscape analysis of non-convex matrix factorization problems. We believe these findings may inspire further development in designing provable algorithms for learning neural networks and other…
Numerous important problems can be framed as learning from graph data. We propose a framework for learning convolutional neural networks for arbitrary graphs. These graphs may be undirected, directed, and with both discrete and continuous node and edge attributes. Analogous to image-based convolutional networks that operate on locally connected regions of the input, we present a general approach to extracting locally connected regions from graphs. Using established benchmark data sets, we demonstrate that the learned feature representations are competitive with state of the art graph kernels a…
Recent approaches based on artificial neural networks (ANNs) have shown promising results for short-text classification. However, many short texts occur in sequences (e.g., sentences in a document or utterances in a dialog), and most existing ANN-based systems do not leverage the preceding short texts when classifying a subsequent one. In this work, we present a model based on recurrent neural networks and convolutional neural networks that incorporates the preceding short texts. Our model achieves state-of-the-art results on three different datasets for dialog act prediction.
Current deep convolutional networks are fixed in their topology. We explore the possibilites of making the convolutional topology a parameter itself by combining NeuroEvolution of Augmenting Topologies (NEAT) with Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and propose such a system using blocks of Residual Networks (ResNets). We then explain how our suggested system can only be built once additional optimizations have been made, as genetic algorithms are way more demanding than training per backpropagation. On the way there we explain most of those buzzwords and offer a gentle and brief introduction…
In many robotics and VR/AR applications, 3D-videos are readily-available sources of input (a continuous sequence of depth images, or LIDAR scans). However, those 3D-videos are processed frame-by-frame either through 2D convnets or 3D perception algorithms. In this work, we propose 4-dimensional convolutional neural networks for spatio-temporal perception that can directly process such 3D-videos using high-dimensional convolutions. For this, we adopt sparse tensors and propose the generalized sparse convolution that encompasses all discrete convolutions. To implement the generalized sparse conv…
We prove bounds on the generalization error of convolutional networks. The bounds are in terms of the training loss, the number of parameters, the Lipschitz constant of the loss and the distance from the weights to the initial weights. They are independent of the number of pixels in the input, and the height and width of hidden feature maps. We present experiments using CIFAR-10 with varying hyperparameters of a deep convolutional network, comparing our bounds with practical generalization gaps.
A convolutional neural network is proposed to mitigate fiber transmission effects, achieving a five-fold reduction in trainable parameters compared to alternative equalizers, and 3.5 dB improvement in MSE compared to DBP with comparable complexity.
In this paper we introduce a tool called Principal Image Sections Mapping - PRISM, dedicated for PyTorch, but can be easily ported to other deep learning frameworks. Presented software relies on Principal Component Analysis to visualize the most significant features recognized by a given Convolutional Neural Network. Moreover, it allows to display comparative set features between images processed in the same batch, therefore PRISM can be a method well synerging with technique Explanation by Example.
In this paper, a geometric framework for neural networks is proposed. This framework uses the inner product space structure underlying the parameter set to perform gradient descent not in a component-based form, but in a coordinate-free manner. Convolutional neural networks are described in this framework in a compact form, with the gradients of standard --- and higher-order --- loss functions calculated for each layer of the network. This approach can be applied to other network structures and provides a basis on which to create new networks.

We study the generalization capacity of group convolutional neural networks. We identify precise estimates for the VC dimensions of simple sets of group convolutional neural networks. In particular, we find that for infinite groups and appropriately chosen convolutional kernels, already two-parameter families of convolutional neural networks have an infinite VC dimension, despite being invariant to the action of an infinite group.
Convolutional neural networks are very popular nowadays. Training neural networks is not an easy task. Each convolution corresponds to a structured transformation matrix. In order to help avoid the exploding/vanishing gradient problem, it is desirable that the singular values of each transformation matrix are not large/small in the training process. We propose three new regularization terms for a convolutional kernel tensor to constrain the singular values of each transformation matrix. We show how to carry out the gradient type methods, which provides new insight about the training of convolu…

We describe the class of convexified convolutional neural networks (CCNNs), which capture the parameter sharing of convolutional neural networks in a convex manner. By representing the nonlinear convolutional filters as vectors in a reproducing kernel Hilbert space, the CNN parameters can be represented as a low-rank matrix, which can be relaxed to obtain a convex optimization problem. For learning two-layer convolutional neural networks, we prove that the generalization error obtained by a convexified CNN converges to that of the best possible CNN. For learning deeper networks, we train CCNNs…

Ensemble learning is a method of combining multiple trained models to improve model accuracy. We propose the usage of such methods, specifically ensemble average, inside Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architectures by replacing the single convolutional layers with Inner Average Ensembles (IEA) of multiple convolutional layers. Empirical results on different benchmarking datasets show that CNN models using IEA outperform those with regular convolutional layers. A visual and a similarity score analysis of the features generated from IEA explains why it boosts the model performance.

Image classifiers based on convolutional neural networks are defined, and the rate of convergence of the misclassification risk of the estimates towards the optimal misclassification risk is analyzed. Under suitable assumptions on the smoothness and structure of the aposteriori probability a rate of convergence is shown which is independent of the dimension of the image. This proves that in image classification it is possible to circumvent the curse of dimensionality by convolutional neural networks.

In this paper we cast the well-known convolutional neural network in a Gaussian process perspective. In this way we hope to gain additional insights into the performance of convolutional networks, in particular understand under what circumstances they tend to perform well and what assumptions are implicitly made in the network. While for fully-connected networks the properties of convergence to Gaussian processes have been studied extensively, little is known about situations in which the output from a convolutional network approaches a multivariate normal distribution.

In this work we propose a novel approach to utilize convolutional neural networks for time series forecasting. The time direction of the sequential data with spatial dimensions $D=1,2$ is considered democratically as the input of a spatiotemporal $(D+1)$-dimensional convolutional neural network. Latter then reduces the data stream from $D +1 \to D$ dimensions followed by an incriminator cell which uses this information to forecast the subsequent time step. We empirically compare this strategy to convolutional LSTM's and LSTM's on their performance on the sequential MNIST and the JSB chorals da…
