The imaging of active nanoparticles represents a milestone in decoding heterogeneous catalysts dynamics. We report the facet resolved, surface strain state of a single PtRh alloy nanoparticle on SrTiO3 determined by coherent x-ray diffraction imaging under catalytic reaction conditions. Density functional theory calculations allow us to correlate the facet surface strain state to its reaction environment dependent chemical composition. We find that the initially Pt terminated nanoparticle surface gets Rh enriched under CO oxidation reaction conditions. The local composition is facet orientation dependent and the Rh enrichment is non-reversible under subsequent CO reduction. Tracking facet resolved strain and composition under operando conditions is crucial for a rational design of more efficient heterogeneous catalysts with tailored activity, selectivity and lifetime.
We report electron-beam activated motion of a catalytic nanoparticle along a graphene step edge and associated etching of the edge. This approach enables beam-controlled etching of matter through activated electrocatalytic processes. The applications of electron-beam control as a paradigm for molecular-scale robotics are discussed.
The practical use of nanoparticle superlattices (NPSLs) which are of great interest as materials with designed functionalities is often limited by their lack of structural stability under various utilization conditions. Here, we report a new method for directly synthesizing NPSL fully embedded in hierarchically porous silica which provides exceptional stability and efficient pathways for reactant molecules, making the NPSL highly efficient catalyst. The superlattices made of 12 nm gold nanoparticles exhibit exceptionally high catalytic activity for CO oxidation at low temperature, showing high…
Pt-based bimetallic nanoparticles have attracted significant attention as a promising replacement for expensive Pt nanoparticles. In the systematic design of bimetallic nanoparticles, it is important to understand their preferred atomic structures. However, compared with unary systems, alloy nanoparticles present more structural complexity with various compositional configurations, such as mixed-alloy, core-shell, and multishell structures. In this paper, we developed a unified empirical potential model for various Pt-based binary alloys, such as Pd-Pt, Cu-Pt, Au-Pt, and Ag-Pt. Within this fra…
We determined a full 3D atomic structure of a dumbbell-shaped Pt nanoparticle formed by a coalescence of two nanoclusters using deep learning assisted atomic electron tomography. Formation of double twin boundary was clearly observed at the interface, while substantial anisotropy and disorder were also found throughout the nanodumbbell. This suggests that the diffusion of interfacial atoms mainly governed the coalescence process, but other dynamic processes such as surface restructuring and plastic deformation were also involved. A full 3D strain tensor was clearly mapped, which allows direct …
Cerium oxide nanoparticles are known to catalyze the decomposition of reactive oxygen species such as superoxide radical and hydrogen peroxide. Herein, we examine the superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) mimetic catalytic activities of nanoceria and demonstrate the existence of generic behaviors. For particles of size 4.5, 7.8, 23 and 28 nm, the SOD and CAT catalytic activities exhibit the characteristic shape of a Langmuir isotherm as a function of cerium concentration. Results show that the catalytic effects are enhanced for smaller particles and for the particles with the largest C…
Chemisorption process and catalytic activity of CO to CO2 conversion on PdXRu1-X (X : 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9 and 1) extended as a benchmark for further investigation of very complex nanoparticle (NP) structures have been checked into thoroughly by using the synchrotron-based hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES). Assessment and diagnostic of core levels and valence bands data highlight valuable information regarding the surface interaction and structure of PdRu bimetallic nanoparticles (BM-NPs). Core level shift observed from the C 1s clearly emphasized that the Pd0.5Ru0.5 NPs whi…
Here, we report the catalytic degradation of organic compounds by exploiting the magnetoelectric (ME) nature of cobalt ferrite-bismuth ferrite (CFO-BFO) core-shell nanoparticles. The combination of magnetostrictive CFO with the multiferroic BFO gives rise to a magnetoelectric engine that purifies water under wireless magnetic fields via advanced oxidation processes, without involvement of any sacrificial molecules or co-catalysts. Magnetostrictive CoFe2O4 nanoparticles are fabricated using hydrothermal synthesis, followed by sol-gel synthesis to create the multiferroic BiFeO3 shell. We perform…
Large-area ($\sim$cm$^2$) films of vertical heterostructures formed by alternating graphene and transition-metal dichalcogenide(TMD) alloys are obtained by wet chemical routes followed by a thermal treatment at low temperature (300 $^\circ$C). In particular, we synthesized stacked graphene and W$_x$Mo$_{1-x}$S$_2$ alloy phases that were used as hydrogen evolution catalysts. We observed a Tafel slope of 38.7 mV dec$^{-1}$ and 96 mV onset potential (at current density of 10 mA cm$^{-2}$) when the heterostructure alloy is annealed at 300 $^o$C. These results indicate that heterostructure formed b…
Based on combination of experimental measurements and first-principles calculations we report a novel carbon-based catalytic material and describe significant acceleration of the hydrogenation of magnesium at room temperature in presence of nickel nanoparticles wrapped in multilayer graphene. Increase of the rate of magnesium hydrogenation in contrast to the mix of graphite and nickel nanoparticles evidences intrinsic catalytic properties of explored nanocomposites. Results of simulations demonstrate that the doping from metal substrate and the presence of Stone-Wales defects turn multilayer g…
We report the structural, transport, electronic, and magnetic properties of Co$_2$FeGa Heusler alloy nanoparticles. The Rietveld refinements of x-ray diffraction (XRD) data with the space group Fm$\bar {3}$m clearly demonstrates that the nanoparticles are of single phase. The particle size (D) decreases with increasing the SiO$_2$ concentration. The Bragg peak positions and the inter-planer spacing extracted from high-resolution transmission electron microscopy image and selected area electron diffraction are in well agreement with data obtained from XRD. The coercivity initially increases fro…
Bimetallic plasmonic nanoparticles enable tuning of the optical response and chemical stability by variation of the composition. The present numerical simulation study compares Ag-Au alloy, Ag@Au core-shell, and Au@Ag core-shell bimetallic plasmonic nanoparticles of both spherical and anisotropic (nanotriangle and nanorods) shapes. By studying both spherical and anisotropic (with LSPR in the near-infrared region) shapes, cases with and without interband transitions of Au can be decoupled. Explicit comparisons are facilitated by numerical models supported by careful validation and examination o…
Heterogeneous catalysts consisting of supported metallic nanoparticles typically derive exceptional catalytic activity from their large proportion of under-coordinated surface sites which promote adsorption of reactant molecules. Simultaneously, these high energy surface configurations are unstable, leading to nanoparticle growth or degradation, and eventually a loss of catalytic activity. Surface morphology of catalytic nanoparticles is paramount to catalytic activity, selectivity, as well as degradation rates, however, it is well-known that harsh reaction conditions can cause the surface str…
Molybdenum Disulphide (MoS2) is an interesting material which exists in atomically thin multilayers and can be exfoliated into monolayer or a few layers for multiple applications. It has emerged as a promising material for development of such efficient sensors. Here, we have exfoliated and decorated MoS2 flakes with novel, single phase High Entropy Alloy (HEA) nanoparticles using facile and scalable cryomilling technique, followed by sonochemical method. It is found that the decoration of HEA nanoparticles impart surface enhanced Raman scattering effect and reduction in the work function of th…
A catalyst surface may be exposed to strain due to application of load or interfacing with a substrate with large lattice mismatch. In order to test the effect of strain on catalytic efficiency, we use Density Functional Theory +U (DFT+U) to model water oxidation on expanded and contracted surfaces of the Ni1-xFexOOH alloy, one of the best known catalysts for water splitting. We find that a low amount of iron content has a similar effect as of applying compressive strain. Due to high oxidation state of Fe4+ at the active site, the Fe-O bond is shorter than in pure FeOOH, which is beneficial fo…
While alloy, core-shell and Janus binary nanoclusters are found in more and more technological applications, their formation mechanisms are still poorly understood, especially during synthesis methods involving physical approaches. In this work, we employ a very simple model of such complex systems using Lennard-Jones interactions and inert gas quenching. After demonstrating the ability of the model to well reproduce the formation of alloy, core-shell or Janus nanoparticles, we studied their temporal evolution from the gas via droplets to nanocrystalline particles. In particular, we showed tha…
At the nanometric scale, the synthesis of a random alloy (i.e. without phase segregation, whatever the composition) by chemical synthesis remains a not easy task, even for simple binary type systems. In this context, a unique approach based on the colloidal route is proposed enabling the synthesis of face-centred cubic and monodisperse bimetallic, trimetallic, tetrametallic and pentametallic nanoparticles with diameters around 5 nm as solid solutions. The Fe-Co-Ni-Pt-Ru alloy and its subsets are considered which is a challenging task as each element has fairly different physico-chemical proper…
Bimetallic catalysts can undergo segregation or redistribution of the metals driven by oxidizing and reducing environments. Bragg coherent diffraction imaging (BCDI) was used to relate displacement fields to compositional distributions in crystalline Pt-Rh alloy nanoparticles. 3D images of internal composition showed that the radial distribution of compositions reverses partially between the surface shell and the core when gas flow changes between O2 and H2. Our observation suggests that the elemental segregation of nanoparticle catalysts should be highly active during heterogeneous catalysis …
The formation of monodisperse, tunable sized, alloyed nanoparticles of Ni, Co, or Fe with Pt and pure Pt nanoparticles attached to carbon nanotubes has been investigated. Following homogeneous nucleation, nanoparticles attach directly to non-functionalized singlewall and multiwall carbon nanotubes during nanoparticle synthesis as a function of ligand nature and the nanoparticle work function. These ligands do not only provide a way to tune the chemical composition, size and shape of the nanoparticles but also control a strong reversible interaction with carbon nanotubes and permit controlling …
The influence of a modifier based on WC nanoparticles was investigated using bulk Al in a real industrial process using a commercial AlSi hypoeutectic alloy. The modifier was prepared by hot extrusion approach. Its influence was investigated on Al and on commercial Al A356 alloy. The mechanical properties of the Al A356 alloy modified with WC nanoparticles was determined after T6 heat treatment and compared with an unmodified specimen of the same alloy. The results obtained in the modified Al A356 alloy reveal unusual behavior of the mechanical properties, where the elongation of the alloys im…
Nanoscale inhomogeneities are typical for numerous metallic alloys and crucially important for their practical applications. At the same time, stabilization mechanisms of such a state are poorly understood. We present a general overview of the problem, together with a more detailed discussion of the prototype example, namely, Guinier-Preston zones in Al-based alloys. It is shown that coherent strain due to a misfit between inclusion and host crystal lattices plays a decisive role in the emergence of the inhomogeneous state. We suggest a model explaining formation of ultrathin plates (with the …
In the present work, different synthesis procedures have been demonstrated to fill carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with $\mathrm{Fe}_{1-x}\mathrm{Ni}_x$ alloy nanoparticles (x = 0.33, 0.5). CNTs act as templates for the encapsulation of magnetic nanoparticles, and provide a protective shield against oxidation as well as prevent nanoparticles agglomeration. By variation of the reaction parameters, the purity of the samples, degree of filling, the composition and size of filling nanoparticles have been tailored and therefore the magnetic properties. The samples were analyzed by scanning electron microsc…
Chirality-selected single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) ensure a great potential of building ~1 nm sized electronics. However, the reliable method for chirality-selected SWCNT is still pending. Here we present a theoretical study on the SWCNT's chirality assignment and control during the catalytic growth. This study reveals that the chirality of a SWCNT is determined by the kinetic incorporation of the pentagon formation during SWCNT nucleation. Therefore, chirality is randomly assigned on a liquid catalyst surface. Furthermore, based on the understanding, two potential methods of synthesiz…
We first consider the recrystallization characteristics of catalysis alloy and graphite in the process of diamond synthesis under the condition of super high pressure and high temperature in catalysis method. In the process of diamond synthesis catalysis metal is plastically deformed by increase of pressure and then recrystallized as increasing the temperature. As catalysis metal is recrystallized, the shape of graphite particle is in spherical shape in the region contacting with the catalyst but in any shape in the opposite region. In addition, we calculate the electron charge density distrib…
The stability of a single-walled carbon nanotube placed on top of a catalytic nickel nanoparticle is investigated by means of molecular dynamics simulations. As a case study, we consider the $(12,0)$ nanotube consisting of 720 carbon atoms and the icosahedral Ni$_{309}$ cluster. An explicit set of constant-temperature simulations is performed in order to cover a broad temperature range from 400 to 1200 K, at which a successful growth of carbon nanotubes has been achieved experimentally by means of chemical vapor deposition. The stability of the system depending on parameters of the involved in…
Stabilization of Martensite and Austenite Phases and Realization of Two-way Martensitic Transition in Co-Ni-Ga Ferromagnetic Shape Memory Alloy Nanoparticles
We have calculated surface energies and surface magnetic order of various low-indexed surfaces of monoatomic Fe, Co, and Pt, and binary, ordered FePt, CoPt, and MnPt using density functional theory. Our results for the binary systems indicate that elemental, Pt-covered surfaces are preferred over Fe- and Co-covered and mixed surfaces of the same orientation. The lowest energy orientation for mixed surfaces is the highly coordinated (111) surface. We find Pt-covered (111) surfaces, which can be realized in the L11 structure only, to be lower in energy by about 400 meV/atom compared to the mixed…
Topological crystalline insulator tin telluride (SnTe) provides a rich playground to examine interactions of correlated electronic states, such as ferroelectricity, topological surface states, and superconductivity. Making SnTe into nanowires further induces novel electronic states due to one-dimensional (1D) confinement effects. Thus, for transport measurements, SnTe nanowires must be made narrow in their diameters to ensure the 1D confinement and phase coherence of the topological surface electrons. This study reports a facile growth method to produce narrow SnTe nanowires with a high yield …
At the forefront of nanochemistry, there exists a research endeavor centered around intermetallic nanocrystals, which are unique in terms of long-range atomic ordering, well-defined stoichiometry, and controlled crystal structure. In contrast to alloy nanocrystals with no atomic ordering, it has been challenging to synthesize intermetallic nanocrystals with a tight control over their size and shape. This review article highlights recent progress in the synthesis of intermetallic nanocrystals with controllable sizes and well-defined shapes. We begin with a simple analysis and some insights key …

At the nanoscale, materials exhibit unique properties that differ greatly from those of the bulk state. In the case of Ag$_x$Pt$_{1-x}$ nanoalloys, we aimed to study the solid-liquid transition of nanoparticles of different sizes and compositions. This system is particularly interesting since Pt has a high melting point (2041 K compare to 1035 K for Ag) which could keep the nanoparticle solid during different catalytic reactions at relatively high temperatures, such as we need in the growth of nanotubes. We performed atomic scale simulations using semi-empirical potential implemented in a Mont…
We investigate the effect of the surface electronic structure and composition of LiMn$_2$O$_4$ nanoparticles on the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) studies combined with density functional theory (DFT) based simulations of the EEL spectra reveal in pristine nanoparticles a 4 nm thick surface layer with reduced average Mn oxidation state and increased Mn concentration. This is attributed to Mn$^{2+}$ partially replacing Li$^+$ at the tetrahedral sites of the spinel lattice accompanied by …
Pd$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$ alloy system is an established ideal transition metal system possessing a composition induced paramagnetic to ferromagnetic quantum phase transition (QPT) at the critical concentration $x_c \sim$ 0.026 in bulk. A low-temperature non-Fermi liquid (NFL) behaviour around $x_c$ usually indicates the presence of quantum criticality (QC) in this system. In this work, we explore the existence of such a QPT in nanoparticles of this alloy system. We synthesized single-phase, polydispersed and 40-50 nm mean diameter crystalline nanoparticles of Pd$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$ alloys, with $x$ near $x_…
Bimetallic nanoparticles (BNPs) exhibit diverse morphologies such as core-shell, Janus, onion-like, quasi-Janus, and homogeneous structures. Although extensive effort has been directed towards understanding the equilibrium configurations of BNPs, kinetic mechanisms involved in their development have not been explored systematically. Since these systems often contain a miscibility gap, experimental studies have alluded to spinodal decomposition (SD) as a likely mechanism for the formation of such structures. We present a novel phase-field model for confined (embedded)systems to study SD-induced…
We present a detailed atomistic picture of the oxidation mechanism of Co nanoparticles and its impact on magnetism by experimentally following the evolution of the structure, chemical composition, and magnetism of individual, gas-phase grown Co nanoparticles during controlled oxidation. The early stage oxidation occurs in a twostep process characterized by (i) the initial formation of small CoO crystallites randomly distributed across the nanoparticle surface, until their coalescence leads to structural completion of the oxide shell and passivation of the metallic core; (ii) progressive conver…

(withdrawn) A combined study of magnetic susceptibility and AC resistance was performed on melt-spun Cu-Co granular magnetic ribbons. The AC resistance as a function of temperature has a sharp maximum. We associate it with a diverging correlation length at the temperature of collective freezing of magnetic moments via increasing magnetic losses in the induced non-uniform field. Application of this model to the experimental data allows a direct determination of the critical exponent of correlation length on both sides of the transition. Giant AC magnetoresistance is observed at the freezing tem…
Synthesizing unconventional alloys remains challenging owing to seamless interactions between kinetics and thermodynamics. High entropy alloys (HEAs), for example, draw a fundamentally new concept to enable exploring unknown regions in phase diagrams. The exploration, however, is hindered by traditional metallurgies based on liquid-solid transformation. Vapor-solid transformation that is permissible on pressure-temperature phase diagrams, offers the most kinetically efficient pathway to form any desired alloy (e.g., HEA). Here, we report that a technique called "sparking mashups", which involv…
Photocatalytic $H_2$ evolution reactions on pristine TiO$_2$ is characterized by low efficiencies due to trapping and recombination of charge carriers, and due to a sluggish kinetics of electron transfer. Noble metal (mainly Pt, Pd, Au) nanoparticles are typically decorated as cocatalyst on the TiO$_2$ surface to reach reasonable photocatalytic yields. However, owing to the high cost of noble metals, alternative metal cocatalysts are being developed. Here we introduce an approach to fabricate an efficient noble metal free photocatalytic platform for $H_2$ evolution based on alloyed NiCu cocata…

In the electroplating industry Ni-P coatings are extensively employed owing to their excellent properties which enable substrate protection against corrosion and wear. Depending on their composition and structure, as-plated deposits demonstrate good mechanical, tribological and electrochemical features, catalytic activity but also beneficial magnetic characteristics. With subsequent thermal treatment hardness of Ni-P metal-metalloid system can approach or be even higher than that of hard Cr coatings. The purpose of this paper is to provide a general survey of the research work dealing with the…
Co2FeAl (CFA) nanoparticles (NPs) of different sizes were synthesized by chemical route. The effect of the size of NPs upon the structure and magnetization compared to its bulk counterpart was investigated. The structure and composition were determined from X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electron microscopy. XRD analysis shows that the samples are having single (A2-type) disordered phase. Magnetization measurements suggest that the samples are soft ferromagnetic in nature with very low coercivity. Enhanced magnetic properties like saturation magnetization, coercive force, retentivity, and Curie-t…
The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a key process in electrochemical water splitting. To lower the cost and environmental impact of this process, it is highly motivated to develop electrocatalysts with low or no content of noble metals. Here we report on a novel and ingenious synthesis of hybrid PtxNi1-x electrocatalysts in the form of a nanoparticle-necklace structure named nanotrusses, with very low noble metal content. The nanotruss structure possesses important features, such as good conductivity, high surface area, strong interlinking and substrate adhesion, which renders for an exce…
