Experimental results of the $p(^{13}{\rm B},d)^{12}{\rm B}$ transfer reaction to the low-lying states in $^{12}$B are reported. The optical potential parameters for the entrance channel are extracted from the elastic scattering $p$($^{13}{\rm B}$, $p$) measured in the same experiment, while those for the exit channel are global ones. Spectroscopic factors associated with the $p$-, $s$-, and $d$-wave neutron transfer to the known $^{12}$B states, are extracted by comparing the deuteron angular distributions with the calculation results. The separated $s$- and $d$-wave intruder strengths in $^{13}{\rm B}_{\rm g.s.}$ were determined to be $10(2)\%$ and $6(1)\%$, respectively, which follow roughly the systematics for the $N$ = 8 neutron-rich isotones. The measured total intruder strength is in good agreement with the shell model calculation, while the individual ones evolve quite differently. Particularly, the sudden change of the $d$-wave intensity between $^{13}$B and $^{12}$Be needs further theoretical interpretation.
With the development of radioactive beam facilities, studies concerning the shell evolution of unstable nuclei have recently gained prominence. Intruder components, particularly s-wave intrusion, in the low-lying states of light neutron-rich nuclei near N=8 are of importance in the study of shell evolution. The use of single-nucleon transfer reactions in inverse kinematics has been a sensitive tool that can be used to quantitatively investigate the single-particle orbital component of selectively populated states. The spin-parity, spectroscopic factor (or single-particle strength), and effecti…
Situated in the so-called "island of inversion," the nucleus $^{32}$Mg is considered as an archetypal example of the disappearance of magicity at $N=20$. We report on high statistics in-beam spectroscopy of $^{32}$Mg with a unique approach, in that two direct reaction probes with different sensitivities to the underlying nuclear structure are employed at the same time. More specifically, states in $^{32}$Mg were populated by knockout reactions starting from $^{33}$Mg and $^{34}$Si, lying inside and outside the island of inversion, respectively. The momentum distributions of the reaction residu…
The $^{9}$Be($^{14}$C, $α$$γ$) reaction at E$_{Lab}$=30 and 35 MeV was used to study excited states of $^{19}$O. The Florida State University (FSU) $γ$ detector array was used to detect $γ$ radiation in coincidence with charged particles detected and identified with a silicon $Δ$E-E particle telescope. Gamma decays have been observed for the first time from six states ranging from 368 to 2147 keV above the neutron separation energy (S$_{n}$=3962 keV) in $^{19}$O. The $γ$ decaying states are interspersed among states previously observed to decay by neutron emission. The ability of electromagnet…
A resonant state at $3.21^{+0.12}_{-0.04}$\,MeV, located just above the one-neutron separation threshold, was observed for the first time in $^{12}$Be from the $^{11}$Be\,$(d,p)^{12}$Be one-neutron transfer reaction in inverse kinematics. This state is assigned a spin-parity of $0^-$, according to the distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA) and decay-width analysis. Gamow coupled-channel (GCC) and Gamow shell-model (GSM) calculations show the importance of the continuum-coupling, which dramatically influences the excitation energy and ordering of low-lying states. Various exotic structures as…
A new $^{11}$Be($d,p$)$^{12}$Be transfer reaction experiment was carried out in inverse kinematics at 26.9$A$ MeV, with special efforts devoted to the determination of the deuteron target thickness and of the required optical potentials from the present elastic scattering data. In addition, a direct measurement of the cross sections for the 0$_2^+$ state was realized by applying an isomer-tagging technique. The s-wave spectroscopic factors of 0.20(0.04) and 0.41(0.11) were extracted for the 0$_1^+$ and 0$_2^+$ states, respectively, in $^{12}$Be. Using the ratio of these spectroscopic factors, …
Estimation of the value and localization of possible systematic errors in determination of level density and radiative strength functions from the (n,2gamma) -reaction
The ($^{11}$B,$^{11}$Li) double charge-exchange reaction (DCER) at $E(^{11}$B)/$A$=80 MeV was measured for the first time to demonstrate the feasibility of the reaction for studying neutrino nuclear responses for double beta decays (DBD). The $^{13}$C($^{11}$B,$^{11}$Li)$^{13}$O reaction shows strengths at the ground state and low and high excitation giant resonance regions. The $^{56}$Fe ($^{11}$B,$^{11}$Li) $^{56}$Ni reaction shows the large strengths in the possible double giant resonance region and beyond, but shows no strengths in the low excitation region below 5 MeV, suggesting strong c…
Partial cross sections of the $^{89}$Y(p,$γ$)$^{90}$Zr reaction have been measured to investigate the $γ$-ray strength function in the neutron-magic nucleus $^{90}$Zr. For five proton energies between $E_p=3.65$ MeV and $E_p=4.70$ MeV, partial cross sections for the population of seven discrete states in $^{90}$Zr have been determined by means of in-beam $γ$-ray spectroscopy. Since these $γ$-ray transitions are dominantly of $E1$ character, the present measurement allows an access to the low-lying dipole strength in $^{90}$Zr. A $γ$-ray strength function based on the experimental data could be…
The $^{22}$Ne(p,$γ$)$^{23}$Na reaction is included in the neon-sodium cycle of hydrogen burning. A number of narrow resonances in the Gamow window dominates the thermonuclear reaction rate. Several resonance strengths are only poorly known. As a result, the $^{22}$Ne(p,$γ$)$^{23}$Na thermonuclear reaction rate is the most uncertain rate of the cycle. Here, a new experimental study of the strengths of the resonances at 436, 479, 639, 661, and 1279 keV proton beam energy is reported. The data have been obtained using a tantalum target implanted with $^{22}$Ne. The strengths $ωγ$ of the resonance…
The neutron-rich $^{28,29}$F isotopes have been recently studied via knockout and interaction cross-section measurements. The $2n$ halo in $^{29}$F has been linked to the occupancy of $pf$ intruder configurations. We investigate bound and continuum states in $^{29}$F, focusing on the $E1$ response of low-lying excitations and the effect of dipole couplings on nuclear reactions. $^{29}\text{F}$ ($^{27}\text{F}+n+n$) wave functions are built within the hyperspherical harmonics formalism, and reaction cross sections are calculated using the Glauber theory. Continuum states and $B(E1)$ transition …
The nuclear level density and $γ$-decay strength of $^{192}$Os have been extracted using particle-$γ$ coincidence data from the $^{192}$Os($α,α^\primeγ$)$^{192}$Os reaction by means of the Oslo method. The level density is found to be a rather smooth function of excitation energy, approximately following the constant temperature model. The $γ$-decay strength is compared to photoneutron cross-section data above the neutron separation energy, and to $E1$ and $M1$ strengths for nuclei in this mass region derived from primary transitions following neutron capture. Our results are in good agreement…
Silicon synthesis in high-temperature hydrogen burning environments presents one possible avenue for the study of abundance anomalies in globular clusters. This was suggested in a previous study, which found that the large uncertainties associated with the $^{30}$Si(p,$γ$)$^{31}$P reaction rate preclude a firm understanding of the stellar conditions that give rise to the Mg-K anti-correlation observed in the globular cluster NGC 2419. In an effort to improve the reaction rate, we present new strength measurements of the $E_r^{lab} = 435$ keV and $E_r^{lab} = 501$ keV resonances in $^{30}$Si(p,…
The $γ$-ray strength function, or average reduced $γ$-ray transition probability, is a fundamental input in the calculation of $(n,γ)$ cross sections used to simulate the nucleosynthesis of elements heavier than Fe. Since 2004, an enhanced probability of $γ$-decay with $γ$-ray energies below $\approx2 - 4$ MeV has been measured in reaction data for numerous nuclei. This has been observed as an increase in the $γ$-ray strength with decreasing $γ$-ray energy, often referred to as the low-energy enhancement or \textit{upbend} in the $γ$-ray strength. Nevertheless, the available data confirming th…
In this review article we discuss the present status of direct nuclear reactions and the nuclear structure aspects one can study with them. We discuss the spectroscopic information we can assess in experiments involving transfer reactions, heavy-ion-induced knockout reactions and quasifree scattering with (p,2p), (p,pn), and (e,e'p) reactions. In particular, we focus on the proton-to-neutron asymmetry of the quenching of the spectroscopic strength.
The $\mathrm{^{25}Al(p,γ)^{26}Si}$ reaction is part of a reaction network with impact on the observed galactic $^{26}$Al abundance. A new determination of the proton strength of the lowest $\ell=0$ proton-resonance in $^{26}$Si is required to more precisely calculate the thermal reaction rate. To this end, the $\mathrm{^{25}Al(d,n)^{26}Si}$ proton-transfer reaction is measured in inverse kinematics using an in-flight radioactive beam at the RESOLUT facility. Excitation energies of the lowest $^{26}$Si proton resonances are measured and cross sections are determined for the lowest $\ell=0$ reso…
The $^{17}$O(p,$α$)$^{14}$N reaction plays a key role in various astrophysical scenarios, from asymptotic giant branch stars to classical novae. It affects the synthesis of rare isotopes such as $^{17}$O and $^{18}$F, which can provide constraints on astrophysical models. A new direct determination of the $E_{\rm R}~=~64.5$~keV resonance strength performed at the Laboratory for Underground Nuclear Astrophysics accelerator has led to the most accurate value to date, $ωγ= 10.0 \pm 1.4_{\rm stat} \pm 0.7_{\rm syst}$~neV, thanks to a significant background reduction underground and generally impro…

An overall reduction factor (ORF) is introduced for studying the quenching of single particle strengths through nucleon transfer reactions. The ORF includes contributions of all the probed bound states of the residual nucleus in a transfer reaction and permits a proper comparison with results of inclusive knockout reactions. A systematic analysis is made with 103 sets of angular distribution data of $(p,d)$ reactions on 21 even-even targets with atomic mass numbers from 8 to 56 using the consistent three-body model reaction methodology proposed in [J. Lee, J.A. Tostevin, B.A. Brown, et al., Ph…
The 14N(p,gamma)15O reaction plays a vital role in various astrophysical scenarios. Its reaction rate must be accurately known in the present era of high precision astrophysics. The cross section of the reaction is often measured relative to a low energy resonance, the strength of which must therefore be determined precisely. The activation method, based on the measurement of 15O decay, has not been used in modern measurements of the 14N(p,gamma)15O reaction. The aim of the present work is to provide strength data for two resonances in the 14N(p,gamma)15O reaction using the activation method. …
Background: The nucleus $^{32}$Mg ($N=20$ and $Z=12$) plays a central role in the so-called "island of inversion" where in the ground states $sd$-shell neutrons are promoted to the $fp$-shell orbitals across the shell gap, resulting in the disappearance of the canonical neutron magic number $N=20$. Purpose: The primary goals of this work are to extend the level scheme of $^{32}$Mg, provide spin-parity assignments to excited states, and discuss the microscopic structure of each state through comparisons with theoretical calculations. Method: In-beam $γ$-ray spectroscopy of $^{32}$Mg was perform…
In stars, the fusion of $^{22}$Ne and $^4$He may produce either $^{25}$Mg, with the emission of a neutron, or $^{26}$Mg and a $γ$ ray. At high temperature, the ($α,n$) channel dominates, while at low temperature, it is energetically hampered. The rate of its competitor, the $^{22}$Ne($α$,$γ$)$^{26}$Mg reaction, and, hence, the minimum temperature for the ($α,n$) dominance, are controlled by many nuclear resonances. The strengths of these resonances have hitherto been studied only indirectly. The present work aims to directly measure the total strength of the resonance at $E$_{r}$\,=\,$334$\,$k…
In this Letter we report on the first inverse kinematics measurement of key resonances in the ${}^{22}\text{Ne}(p,γ)^{23}\text{Na}$ reaction which forms part of the NeNa cycle, and is relevant for ${}^{23}$Na synthesis in asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. An anti-correlation in O and Na abundances is seen across all well-studied globular clusters (GC), however, reaction-rate uncertainties limit the precision as to which stellar evolution models can reproduce the observed isotopic abundance patterns. Given the importance of GC observations in testing stellar evolution models and their depend…
