Gamow-Teller transitions from 24Mg to 24Na were studied via the (t,3He) reaction at 115 AMeV using a secondary triton beam produced via fast fragmentation of 150 AMeV 16O ions. Compared to previous (t,3He) experiments at this energy that employed a primary alpha beam, the secondary beam intensity is improved by about a factor of five. Despite the large emittance of the secondary beam, an excitation-energy resolution of ~200 keV is achieved. A good correspondence is found between the extracted Gamow-Teller strength distribution and those available from other charge-exchange probes. Theoretical calculations using the newly developed USDA and USDB sd-shell model interactions reproduce the data well.
Gamow-Teller and dipole transitions to final states in 13B were studied via the 13C(t,3He) reaction at Et = 115 AMeV. Besides the strong Gamow-Teller transition to the 13B ground state, a weaker Gamow-Teller transition to a state at 3.6 MeV was found. This state was assigned a spin-parity of 3/2- by comparison with shell-model calculations using the WBP and WBT interactions which were modified to allow for mixing between nhw and (n+2)hw configurations. This assignment agrees with a recent result from a lifetime measurement of excited states in 13B. The shell-model calculations also explained t…
The Gamow-Teller strength in nuclei can be strongly affected by the internal degrees of freedom of the nucleon. It is demonstrated that this feature is unique to the Gamow-Teller. Excitation modes that involve spatial degrees of freedom are much less influenced by the internal excitation of nucleons. The fact that the observed Gamow-Teller strength is quenched by 30-40 percent in all nuclei suggests that indeed this is due to the nucleon excitation in nuclei.
In a single j-shell calculation we consider the effects of several different interactions on the values of Gamow-Teller (B(GT)'s) and magnetic moments. The interactions used are MBZE, J=0 pairing, J_{max} pairing and half and half.
We report first time measurements of the beta-neutrino angular correlation based on the kinetic energy shift of protons emitted in parallel or anti-parallel directions with respect to the positron in the beta decay of $^{32}$Ar. This proof of principle experiment provided simultaneous measurements for the superallowed 0$^+$~$\rightarrow$~0$^+$ transition followed by a 3356~keV proton emission and for a Gamow-Teller transition followed by a 2123~keV proton emission. The results, respectively ${\tilde a_{βν}}=1.01(3)_{(stat)}(2)_{(syst)}$ and ${\tilde a_{βν}}=-0.22(9)_{(stat)}(2)_{(syst)}$, are …
The 64-Zn(t,3-He) reaction has been studied using a secondary triton beam of 115 MeV/nucleon to extract the Gamow-Teller transition-strength distribution to 64-Cu. The results were compared with shell-model calculations using the pf-shell effective interactions KB3G and GXPF1A and with existing data from the 64-Zn(d,2-He) reaction. Whereas the experimental results exhibited good consistency, neither of the theoretical predictions managed to reproduce the data. The implications for electron-capture rates during late stellar evolution were investigated. The rates based on the theoretical strengt…
Under the assumption that isospin is a good quantum number, symmetry is expected for the transitions from ground state of the pair T=1, T$_Z$=$\pm$1 nuclei to the excited states of the T=0 nucleus situated betweem them. To study the isospin symmetry of these transitions in mass A=54, we have performed two different experiment: 1) High resolution charge exchange reactions at RCNP (Osaka) for the T$_Z$=+1 $\rightarrow$ 0. 2) $β$-decay experiment a Louvain la Neuve. \\ The present work shows the first results in the analysis of the $β$-decay experiment as part of the Diploma and PhD thesis of Fra…
The charge-exchange excitations in nuclei are studied within the fully self-consistent proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation using the finite-range Gogny interaction. No additional parameters beyond those included in the effective nuclear force are included. Axially symmetric deformations are consistently taken into account, both in the description of the ground states and spin-isospin excitations. We focus on the isobaric analog and Gamow-Teller resonances. A comparison of the predicted strength distributions to the existing experimental data is presented and the role of nuc…
We investigate the phase coherence of isoscalar pairs from the $B({\rm GT};0^+_1\,T\!=\!1 \to 1^+_1\,T\!=\!0)$ values in two-particle configurations of $A=6$, 18, and 42 nuclei and two-hole configurations of $A=14$ and 38 ones. We find that these Gamow-Teller (GT) matrix elements are always constructive and thus enlarged under isovector- and isoscalar-pairing Hamiltonians, whereas the observed GT strengths are strongly hindered for the two-hole configurations, including the famous $^{14}$C dating $β$ decay. This indicates that the actual isoscalar pair, unlike the isovector pair, has no defini…
Gamow-Teller (GT) transitions from high-spin isomers are studied using the sum-rule approach and the shell model. The GT transition strengths from the high-spin isomeric states show a stronger collectivity than those from the ground states in two $N=Z$ nuclei, $^{52}$Fe and $^{94}$Ag. It is argued that the spin-up and spin-down Fermi spheres involved in the GT transitions from the high-spin isomeric states play important roles. These Fermi spheres are analogous to the isospin-up and isospin-down Fermi spheres for the GT transitions from the ground states in $N>Z$ nuclei and create a strong col…
A systematic shell model description of the experimental Gamow-Teller transition strength distributions in $^{42}$Ti, $^{46}$Cr, $^{50}$Fe and $^{54}$Ni is presented. These transitions have been recently measured via $β$ decay of these $T_z$=-1 nuclei, produced in fragmentation reactions at GSI and also with ($^3${He},$t$) charge-exchange (CE) reactions corresponding to $T_z = + 1$ to $T_z = 0$ carried out at RCNP-Osaka.The calculations are performed in the $pf$ model space, using the GXPF1a and KB3G effective interactions. Qualitative agreement is obtained for the individual transitions, whil…
We develop a fully self-consistent subtracted second random-phase approximation for charge-exchange processes with Skyrme energy-density functionals. As a first application, we study Gamow-Teller excitations in the doubly-magic nucleus $^{48}$Ca, the lightest double-$β$ emitter that could be used in an experiment, and in $^{78}$Ni, the single-beta-decay rate of which is known. The amount of Gamow-Teller strength below 20 or 30 MeV is considerably smaller than in other energy-density-functional calculations and agrees better with experiment in $^{48}$Ca, as does the beta-decay rate in $^{78}$Ni…
We optimize chiral interactions at next-to-next-to leading order to observables in two- and three-nucleon systems, and compute Gamow-Teller transitions in carbon-14, oxygen-22 and oxygen-24 using consistent two-body currents. We compute spectra of the daughter nuclei nitrogen-14, fluorine-22 and fluorine-24 via an isospin-breaking coupled-cluster technique, with several predictions. The two-body currents reduce the Ikeda sum rule, corresponding to a quenching factor q^2 ~ 0.84-0.92 of the axial-vector coupling. The half life of carbon-14 depends on the energy of the first excited 1+ state, the…
Solar neutrino capture cross-section by 127I nucleus has been studied with taking into account the influence of the resonance structure of the nuclear strength function S(E). Three types of isobaric resonances: giant Gamow-Teller, analog resonance and low-lying Gamow-Teller pigmy resonances has been investigated on the framework of self-consistent theory of finite Fermi systems. The calculations have been performed considering the resonance structure of the charge-exchange strength function S(E). We analyze the effect of each resonance on the energy dependence of the cross-section. It has been…
We show that chiral effective field theory (EFT) two-body currents provide important contributions to the quenching of low-momentum-transfer Gamow-Teller transitions, and use chiral EFT to predict the momentum-transfer dependence that is probed in neutrinoless double-beta decay. We then calculate for the first time the neutrinoless double-beta decay operator based on chiral EFT currents and study the nuclear matrix elements at successive orders. The contributions from chiral two-body currents are significant and should be included in all calculations.
In the present work we perform a systematic shell model study of Gamow-Teller transition strength distributions in $sd$ shell nuclei using $ab~initio$ effective interactions. The $ab~initio$ effective interactions are based on in-medium similarity renormalization group (IM-SRG) and coupled-cluster effective interaction (CCEI) approaches. The aim of the present work is to test the predictive power of $ab~initio$ effective interactions by using the available experimental data of Gamow-Teller strength distributions in $sd$ shell nuclei. We perform calculations for $^{20}$Ne $\rightarrow$ $^{20}$F…
Radiative corrections in the electroweak sector constitute an essential component in the ability to disentangle Beyond Standard Model physics from experimental data. This is particularly relevant for strongly bound systems undergoing weak decays such as nuclear $β$ decay, where its contribution to top-row CKM unitarity tests is essential. In this Letter we note the need for an additional radiative correction to the Gamow-Teller form factor in allowed decays. It concerns a combination of electrostatic final state interactions and QCD-induced currents. We review the basic derivation and report a…
We report the first measurement of low-energy proton-capture cross sections of $^{124}$Xe in a heavy ion storage ring. $^{124}$Xe$^{54+}$ ions of five different beam energies between 5.5 AMeV and 8 AMeV were stored to collide with a windowless hydrogen target. The $^{125}$Cs reaction products were directly detected. The interaction energies are located on the high energy tail of the Gamow window for hot, explosive scenarios such as supernovae and X-ray binaries. The results serve as an important test of predicted astrophysical reaction rates in this mass range. Good agreement in the prediction…
The proportionality between differential cross sections at vanishing linear momentum transfer and Gamow-Teller transition strength, expressed in terms of the \textit{unit cross section} ($\hatσ_{GT}$) was studied as a function of target mass number for ($t$,$^{3}$He) and ($^{3}$He,$t$) reactions at 115 $A$MeV and 140 $A$MeV, respectively. Existing ($^{3}$He,$t$) and ($t$,$^{3}$He) data on targets with mass number $12\leq A\leq 120$ were complemented with new and reevaluated ($t$,$^{3}$He) data on proton, deuteron, $^{6}$Li and $^{12}$C targets. It was found that in spite of the small differenc…
A comparative study of the nuclear Gamow-Teller response (GTR) within conceptually different state-of-the-art approaches is presented. Three nuclear microscopic models are considered: (i) the recently developed charge-exchange relativistic time blocking approximation (RTBA) based on the covariant density functional theory, (ii) the shell model (SM) with an extended "jj77" model space and (iii) the non-relativistic quasiparticle random-phase approximation (QRPA) with a Brueckner G-matrix effective interaction. We study the physics cases where two or all three of these models can be applied. The…
The nuclear response theory for isospin-transfer modes in the relativistic particle-vibration coupling framework is extended to include coupling of single nucleons to isospin-flip (charge-exchange) phonons, in addition to the usual neutral vibrations. This new coupling introduces dynamical pion and rho-meson exchange, beyond the Hartree-Fock approximation, up to infinite order. We investigate the impact of this new mechanism on the Gamow-Teller response of a few doubly-magic neutron-rich nuclei, namely $^{48}$Ca, $^{78}$Ni, $^{132}$Sn and $^{208}$Pb. It is found that the coupling to isospin-fl…
We report the observation of a very exotic decay mode at the proton drip-line, the $β$-delayed $γ$-proton decay, clearly seen in the $β$ decay of the $T_z$ = -2 nucleus $^{56}$Zn. Three $γ$-proton sequences have been observed after the $β$ decay. Here this decay mode, already observed in the $sd$-shell, is seen for the first time in the $fp$-shell. Both $γ$ and proton decays have been taken into account in the estimation of the Fermi (F) and Gamow Teller (GT) strengths. Evidence for fragmentation of the Fermi strength due to strong isospin mixing is found.
We use chiral interactions and several {\em ab initio} methods to compute the nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) for ground-state to ground-state double Gamow-Teller transitions in a range of isotopes, and explore the correlation of these NMEs with those for neutrinoless double beta decay produced by the exchange of a light Majorana neutrino. When all the NMEs of both isospin-conserving and isospin-changing transitions from the {\em ab initio} calculations are considered, the correlation is strong. For the experimentally relevant isospin-changing transitions by themselves, however, the correlation…
Searches of neutrinoless double-beta decay require information on the value of the nuclear matrix elements that rule the process to plan and interpret experiments. At present, however, even the matrix elements obtained with the most reliable many-body approaches do not agree to each other better than a factor two or three. A usual test of the many-body calculations is the comparison to several nuclear observables, but so far no nuclear structure property has been found to show a good correlation to neutrinoless double-beta decay. Here we propose that double charge-exchange experiments can offe…
The relativistic proton-neutron quasiparticle random phase approximation (pn-RQRPA) is applied in the calculation of the L=0 strength in charge-exchange reactions on $^{48}$Ca, $^{90}$Zr, $^{208}$Pb and nuclei in the Sn isotopic chain. The microscopic theoretical framework is based on the relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (RHB) model for the nuclear ground state. The calculation is fully self-consistent, i.e. the same interaction is used both in the RHB equations that determine the quasiparticle basis, and in the matrix equations of the pn-RQRPA. The inclusion of the higher-order terms that incl…
We study the double Gamow-Teller (DGT) strength distribution of $^{48}$Ca with state-of-the-art large-scale nuclear shell model calculations. Our analysis shows that the centroid energy of the DGT giant resonance depends mostly on the isovector pairing interaction, while the resonance width is more sensitive to isoscalar pairing. Pairing correlations are also key in neutrinoless $ββ$ ($0νββ$) decay. We find a simple relation between the centroid energy and width of the $^{48}$Ca DGT giant resonance and %the value of the $0νββ$ decay nuclear matrix element. More generally, we observe a very goo…
We apply the charge-exchange subtracted second random-phase approximation (SSRPA), based on Skyrme functionals, to investigate Gamow-Teller resonances in several closed-shell and closed-subshell nuclei, located in different regions of the nuclear chart. After having discussed the SSRPA findings obtained within different approximation schemes in $^{48}$Ca, we compare our results with {\it{ab-initio}} coupled-cluster predictions available for C and O isotopes, where two-body currents are included. Our integrated strenghts, obtained by using one-body transition operators, are lower compared to th…
Nuclear magnetic-dipole (M1) and Gamow-Teller (GT) transitions provide insight into the spin-isospin properties of atomic nuclei. By considering them as unified spin-isospin transitions, the M1/GT transition strengths and excitation energies are subject to isospin symmetry. The excitation properties associated to the M1/GT symmetry need to be clarified within consistent theoretical approach. In this work, the relationship between the M1 and GT transitions in Ca isotopes is investigated in a unified framework based on the relativistic energy-density functional (REDF) with point-coupling interac…

The $^{150}$Nd($^3$He,$t$) reaction at 140 MeV/u and $^{150}$Sm($t$,$^3$He) reaction at 115 MeV/u were measured, populating excited states in $^{150}$Pm. The transitions studied populate intermediate states of importance for the (neutrinoless) $ββ$ decay of $^{150}$Nd to $^{150}$Sm. Monopole and dipole contributions to the measured excitation-energy spectra were extracted by using multipole decomposition analyses. The experimental results were compared with theoretical calculations obtained within the framework of Quasiparticle Random-Phase Approximation (QRPA), which is one of the main method…
The relativistic quasiparticle time-blocking approximation (RQTBA) is applied to the description of nuclear excitation modes of astrophysical interest. This method is based on the meson-nucleon Lagrangian and goes beyond the standard relativistic quasiparticle random-phase approximation (RQRPA) by treating the coupling between single quasiparticles and collective vibrations of the nucleus. We calculate electric dipole transitions and Gamow-Teller modes in the (p,n) direction in a few Sn isotopes and obtain the rates of (n,$γ$) reaction and $β^-$-decay processes, which govern the r-process nucl…
This paper presents a systematic evaluation of the ability of theoretical models to reproduce experimental Gamow-Teller transition strength distributions measured via (n,p)-type charge-exchange reactions at intermediate beam energies. The focus is on transitions from stable nuclei in the pf shell (45<A<64). The impact of deviations between experimental and theoretical Gamow-Teller strength distributions on derived stellar electron-capture rates at densities and temperatures of relevance for Type Ia and Type II supernovae is investigated. The theoretical models included in the study are based o…
The Gamow-Teller strength distribution of the decay of $^{186}$Hg into $^{186}$Au has been determined for the first time using the total absorption gamma spectroscopy technique and has been compared with theoretical QRPA calculations using the SLy4 Skyrme force. The measured Gamow-Teller strength distribution and the half-life are described by mixing oblate and prolate configurations independently in the parent and daughter nuclei. The best description of the experimental beta strength is obtained with dominantly prolate components for both parent $^{186}$Hg and daughter $^{186}$Au. The approa…
