We have measured the angular distribution of recoiling daughter nuclei emitted from the Gamow-Teller $β$ decay of spin-polarized $^{80}$Rb. The asymmetry of this distribution vanishes to lowest order in the Standard Model (SM) in pure Gamow-Teller decays, producing an observable very sensitive to new interactions. We measure the non-SM contribution to the asymmetry to be $A_{T}$= 0.015 $\pm$ 0.029 (stat) $\pm$ 0.019 (syst), consistent with the SM prediction. We constrain higher-order SM corrections using the measured momentum dependence of the asymmetry, and their remaining uncertainty dominates the systematic error. Future progress in determining the weak magnetism term theoretically or experimentally would reduce the final errors. We describe the resulting constraints on fundamental 4-Fermi tensor interactions.
Measurements of the beta decay correlation coefficients in nuclear decay aim for a precision below $1\%$ and theoretical predictions should follow this trend. In this work, the influence of the two dominant Standard Model correction terms, i.e. the recoil-order and the radiative correction, are studied for the most commonly measured beta correlations, i.e. the $β$-asymmetry parameter ($A_β$) and the $β-ν$ angular correlation ($a_{βν}$). The recoil-order correction is calculated with the well-known Holstein formalism using the impulse approximation to evaluate experimentally inaccessible form f…
We calculate the contributions of weak magnetism and proton recoil of order O(E^2_e/m^2_N)~10^{-5}, i.e. to next-to-next-to-leading order in the large nucleon mass expansion, to the neutron lifetime and correlation coefficients of the neutron beta decay, where E_e and m_N are the electron energy and the nucleon mass, respectively. We analyze the electron-energy and angular distribution for the neutron beta decay with a polarized neutron, a polarized electron and an unpolarized proton. Together with Wilkinson's corrections (Nucl. Phys. A 377, 474 (1982) and radiative corrections of order O(alph…
In the Standard Model of electroweak interactions and in the tree--approximation we calculate the rate and branching ratio of the neutron radiative beta decay with one-real photon emission by taking into account the contributions of the weak magnetism and proton recoil to order 1/m_p of the large proton mass m_p expansion. We find that the obtained contributions of the weak magnetism and proton recoil increase the rate and branching ratio of the neutron radiative beta decay by about 0.70%. This is large compared with the contribution of the weak magnetism and proton recoil of about 0.16% to th…
The electron shakeoff of 19F and 35Cl atoms resulting from the \b{eta}+ decay of 19Ne+ and 35Ar+ ions has been investigated using a Paul trap coupled to a time of flight recoil-ion spectrometer. The charge-state distributions of the recoiling daughter nuclei were compared to theoretical calculations based on the sudden approximation and accounting for subsequent Auger processes. The excellent agreement obtained for 35Cl is not reproduced in 19F. The shortcoming is attributed to the inaccuracy of the independent particle model employed to calculate the primary shakeoff probabilities in systems …
We review the design, simulation, and tests, of a detection system for measuring the energy distribution of daughter nuclei recoiling from the beta-decay of laser trapped neon isotopes. This distribution is sensitive to several new physics effects in the weak sector. Our `decay microscope' relies on imaging the velocity distribution of high energy recoil ions in coincidence with electrons shaken-off in the decay. We demonstrate by way of Monte-Carlo simulation, that the nuclear microscope increases the statistical sensitivity of kinematic measurements to the underlying energy distribution, and…
Of the many extensions to the standard model that could possibly generate neutrino mass, most necessitate the neutrino being a Majorana fermion. If this is the case, the rare process of neutrinoless double beta decay is predicted with half lives greater than about $10^{25}$ years. Many current and future experiments look for this decay by identifying a summed double beta energy at the Q value of the decay, but adding energy and angular measurements of the individual betas allows the underlying decay mechanism to be probed. A novel nano-tracking detector based on a clever combination of thin fi…
Beta-delayed-neutron ($β$n) spectroscopy was performed using the Beta-decay Paul Trap and an array of radiation detectors. The $β$n branching ratios and energy spectra for $^{135,136}$Sb and $^{140}$I were obtained by measuring the time of flight of recoil ions emerging from the trapped ion cloud. These nuclei are located at the edge of an isotopic region identified as having $β$n branching ratios that impact the r-process abundance pattern around the A~130 peak. For $^{135,136}$Sb and $^{140}$I, $β$n branching ratios of 14.6(11)%, 17.6(28)%, and 7.6(28)% were determined, respectively. The $β$…
A formalism for the study of charge symmetry breaking (CSB) effects is discussed and used to analyze the effects of charge symmetry breaking on neutron beta decay. The effect of including CSB reduces the beta decay matrix element by an amount on the order of $10^{-4}$, a value much larger than the previous estimate. A much smaller contribution due to proton recoil is treated as well, which is found to be on the order of $10^{-6}$. The current uncertainty in the value of $V_{ud}$ is also of order $10^{-4}$. An improvement of that uncertainty by an order of magnitude would require that charge sy…
We give a precision analysis of the correlation coefficients of the electron-energy spectrum and angular distribution of the beta decay and radiative beta decay of the neutron with polarized neutron and electron to order 10^(-3). The calculation of correlation coefficients is carried out within the Standard model with contributions of order 10^(-3), caused by the weak magnetism and proton recoil, taken to next-to-leading order in the large proton mass expansion, and with radiative corrections of order "alpha/pi ~ 10^(-3", calculated to leading order in the large proton mass expansion. The obta…
In the framework of the Standard Model (SM) a theoretical description of the neutron beta decay is given at the level of 10^{-5}. The neutron lifetime and correlation coefficients of the neutron beta decay for a polarized neutron, a polarized electron and an unpolarized proton are calculated at the account for i) the radiative corrections of order O(αE_e/m_N) ~ 10^{-5} to Sirlin's outer and inner radiative corrections of order O(α/π), ii) the corrections of order O(E^2_e/m^2_N) ~ 10^{-5}, caused by weak magnetism and proton recoil, and iii) Wilkinson's corrections of order 10^{-5} (Wilkinson, …
\item[Background] The nuclear responses for antineutrinos associated with double beta decays (DBDs) and astro-antineutrino interactions are studied by measuring ordinary muon capture (OMC) rates. \item[Purpose]The experimental studies of absolute OMC rates and their mass number dependence for $^{100}$Mo and the natural Mo are currently of interest in astro-antineutrinos and DBDs. \item[Method]The OMC rates were obtained experimentally by measuring the time spectrum of the trapped muon's decay into electrons to obtain the half-lives of the trapped muons. \item[Results]The OMC rate for the enric…
We review the current status of the radioisotopes program at the Soreq Applied Research Accelerator Facility (SARAF), where we utilize an electrostatic-ion-beam trap and a magneto-optical trap for studying the nuclear $β$-decay from trapped radioactive atoms and ions. The differential energy spectra of $β$'s and recoil ions emerging from the decay is sensitive to beyond standard model interactions and is complementary to high energy searches. The completed facility SARAF-II will be one of the world's most powerful deuteron, proton and fast neutron sources, producing light radioactive isotopes …
We calculate the correlation coefficients of the electron-energy and electron-antineutrino angular distribution of the neutron beta decay with polarized electron and unpolarised neutron and proton. The calculation is carried out within the Standard Model (SM) with the contributions, caused by the weak magnetism, proton recoil and radiative corrections of order of 10^{-3}, Wilkinson's corrections of order 10^{-5}$(Wilkinson, Nucl. Phys. A377, 474 (1982) and Ivanov et al., Phys. Rev. C95, 055502 (2017)) and the contributions of interactions beyond the SM. The obtained results can be used for the…
We analyze the correlation coefficient T(E_e), which was introduced by Ebel and Feldman (Nucl. Phys. 4, 213 (1957)). The correlation coefficient T(E_e) is induced by the correlations of the neutron spin with the antineutrino 3-momentum and the electron spin with the electron 3-momentum. Such a correlation structure is invariant under discrete P, C and T symmetries. The correlation coefficient T(E_e), calculated to leading order in the large nucleon mass m_N expansion, is equal to T(E_e) = - 2 g_A(1 + g_A)/(1 + 3 g^2_A) = - B_0, i.e. of order |T(E_e)| ~ 1, where $g_A$ is the axial coupling cons…
Liquid Xe TPCs are among the most popular choices for double beta decay and WIMP dark matter searches. Gaseous Xe has intrinsic advantages when compared to Liquid Xe, specifically, tracking capability and better energy resolution for double beta decay searches. The performance of gaseous Xe can be further improved by molecular additives such as trimethylamine(TMA), which are expected to (1) cool down the ionization electrons, (2) convert Xe excitation energy to TMA ionizations through Penning transfer, and (3) produce scintillation and electroluminescence light in a more easily detectable wave…
Measurements of the beta-neutrino correlation coefficient (a$_{βν}$) in nuclear beta decay, together with the Fierz interference term (b$_F$), provide a robust test for the existence of exotic interactions beyond the Standard Model of Particle Physics. The extraction of these quantities from the recoil ion spectra in $β$-decay requires accurate knowledge, decay branching ratios, and high-precision calculations of higher order nuclear effects. Here, we report on a new measurement of the $^{23}$Ne $β$-decay branching ratio, which allows a reanalysis of existing high-precision measurements. Toget…
In the standard effective V - A theory of low-energy weak interactions (i.e. in the Standard Model (SM)) we analyze the structure of the correlation coefficients S(E_e) and U(E_e), where E_e is the electron energy. These correlation coefficients were introduced to the electron-energy and angular distribution of the neutron beta decay by Ebel and Feldman ( Nucl. Phys. 4, 213 (1957)) in addition to the set of correlation coefficients proposed by Jackson et al. (Phys. Rev. 106, 517 (1957)). The correlation coefficients $S(E_e)$ and $U(E_e)$ are induced by simultaneous correlations of the neutron …
