The map of half-BPS line defects under mirror symmetry has previously been worked out for 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ linear quivers with unitary gauge groups, where these defects have a clear realization in terms of a brane picture in Type IIB String Theory. In this work, we initiate the study of line defects and the associated mirror maps for more general 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ quiver gauge theories from a QFT approach, using the $S$-type operations introduced in \cite{Dey:2020hfe}. In particular, our construction does not rely on any String Theory realization of the quiver gauge theories and the defects. After discussing the general framework for the construction of these line defects and their mirror maps, we focus on quiver gauge theories of the $D$-type and the affine $D$-type with unitary gauge groups, as a concrete set of examples. Some of the line defects we study admit a Hanany-Witten description and we show that the associated mirror maps predicted by the Type IIB construction in these cases agree with the QFT computation. In addition, we study an example involving defects in an affine $D$-type theory, for which the dual theory is not directly realized by the Type IIB description. In a companion paper, we will discuss defects in infinite families of non-ADE quivers using the general construction developed in this paper.
Starting from mirror pairs consisting only of linear (framed A-type) quivers, we demonstrate that a wide class of three-dimensional quiver gauge theories with N=4 supersymmetry and their mirror duals can be obtained by suitably gauging flavor symmetries. Infinite families of mirror pairs including various quivers of D and E-type and their affine extensions, star-shaped quivers, and quivers with symplectic gauge groups may be generated in this fashion. We present two different computational strategies to perform the aforementioned gauging procedure - one of them involves N=2* classical paramete…
We study N=1 four dimensional quiver theories arising on the worldvolume of D3-branes at del Pezzo singularities of Calabi-Yau threefolds. We argue that under local mirror symmetry D3-branes become D6-branes wrapped on a three torus in the mirror manifold. The type IIB (p,q) 5-brane web description of the local del Pezzo, being closely related to the geometry of its mirror manifold, encodes the geometry of 3-cycles and is used to obtain gauge groups, quiver diagrams and the charges of the fractional branes.
Understanding the map of line defects in a Quantum Field Theory under a given duality is generically a difficult problem. This paper is the second in a series which aims to address this question in the context of 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ mirror symmetry. A general prescription for constructing vortex defects and their mirror maps in quiver gauge theories beyond the $A$-type was presented by the author in an earlier paper [arxiv:2103.01243], where specific examples involving $D$-type and affine $D$-type quivers were discussed. In this paper, we apply the aforementioned prescription to construct a fam…
Dimer models are 2-dimensional combinatorial systems that have been shown to encode the gauge groups, matter content and tree-level superpotential of the world-volume quiver gauge theories obtained by placing D3-branes at the tip of a singular toric Calabi-Yau cone. In particular the dimer graph is dual to the quiver graph. However, the string theoretic explanation of this was unclear. In this paper we use mirror symmetry to shed light on this: the dimer models live on a T^2 subspace of the T^3 fiber that is involved in mirror symmetry and is wrapped by D6-branes. These D6-branes are mirror to…
In this note we review some of the uses of framed quivers to study BPS invariants of Donaldson-Thomas type. We will mostly focus on non-compact Calabi-Yau threefolds. In certain cases the study of these invariants can be approached as a generalized instanton problem in a six dimensional cohomological Yang-Mills theory. One can construct a quantum mechanics model based on a certain framed quiver which locally describes the theory around a generalized instanton solution. The problem is then reduced to the study of the moduli spaces of representations of these quivers. Examples include the affine…
We show that the Higgs branch of a four-dimensional Yang-Mills theory, with gauge and matter content summarised by an ADE quiver diagram, is identical to the generalised Coulomb branch of a four-dimensional superconformal strongly coupled gauge theory with ADE global symmetry. This equivalence suggests the existence of a mirror symmetry between the quiver theories and the strongly coupled theories.
We present non-trivial checks of three dimensional mirror symmetry for $\mathcal{N}=4$, $\hat{D}_N$ quiver gauge theories with unitary gauge groups using partition function on a round sphere. Type IIB (Hanany-Witten) realization of these theories and their mirror duals (as world volume gauge theories on coincident D3 branes) involve 1/2-BPS boundary conditions associated with orbifold and orientifold 5-planes respectively, in addition to NS5 and D5 branes. We demonstrate that partition function for a given quiver in this class may be decomposed into distinct contributions from the aforemention…
We study the matrix models calculating the sphere partition functions of 3d gauge theories with $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetry and a quiver structure of a $\hat D$ Dynkin diagram (where each node is a unitary gauge group). As in the case of necklace ($\hat A $) quivers, we can map the problem to that of free fermion quantum mechanics whose complicated Hamiltonian we find explicitly. Many of these theories are conjectured to be dual under mirror symmetry to certain unitary linear quivers with extra Sp nodes or antisymmetric hypermultiplets. We show that the free fermion formulations of such mirr…
We show that the Higgs branch of a four-dimensional Yang-Mills theory, with gauge and matter content summarised by an E_8 quiver diagram, is identical to the generalised Coulomb branch of a four-dimensional superconformal strongly coupled gauge theory with E_8 global symmetry. This is the final step in showing that there is a Higgs-Coulomb identity of this kind for each of the cases {0}, A_1, A_2, D_4, E_6, E_7 and E_8. This series of equivalences suggests the existence of a mirror symmetry between the quiver theories and the strongly coupled theories. We also discuss how to interpret the para…
Mirror symmetry, a three dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ IR duality, has been studied in detail for quiver gauge theories of the $ADE$-type (as well as their affine versions) with unitary gauge groups. The $A$-type quivers (also known as linear quivers) and the associated mirror dualities have a particularly simple realization in terms of a Type IIB system of D3-D5-NS5-branes. In this paper, we present a systematic field theory prescription for constructing 3d mirror pairs beyond the $ADE$ quiver gauge theories, starting from a dual pair of $A$-type quivers with unitary gauge groups. The construct…
We introduce and study a surface defect in four dimensional gauge theories supporting nested instantons with respect to the parabolic reduction of the gauge group at the defect. This is engineered from a D3/D7-branes system on a non compact Calabi-Yau threefold $X$. For $X=T^2\times T^*{\mathcal C}_{g,k}$, the product of a two torus $T^2$ times the cotangent bundle over a Riemann surface ${\mathcal C}_{g,k}$ with marked points, we propose an effective theory in the limit of small volume of ${\mathcal C}_{g,k}$ given as a comet shaped quiver gauge theory on $T^2$, the tail of the comet being ma…
Mirror symmetry has proven to be a powerful tool to study several properties of higher dimensional superconformal field theories upon compactification to three dimensions. We propose a quiver description for the mirror theories of the circle reduction of twisted $A_{2N}$ theories of class $\mathsf{S}$ in four dimensions. Although these quivers bear a resemblance to the star-shaped quivers previously studied in the literature, they contain unitary, symplectic and special orthogonal gauge groups, along with hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation. The vacuum moduli spaces of these quiv…
The BPS spectrum of certain N=2 supersymmetric field theories can be determined algebraically by studying the representation theory of BPS quivers. We introduce methods based on BPS quivers to study line defects. The presence of a line defect opens up a new BPS sector: framed BPS states can be bound to the defect. The defect can be geometrically described in terms of laminations on a curve. To a lamination we associate certain elements of the Leavitt path algebra of the BPS quiver and use them to compute the framed BPS spectrum. We also provide an alternative characterization of line defects b…
We study N = 4 quiver theories on the three-sphere. We compute partition functions using the localisation method by Kapustin et al. solving exactly the matrix integrals at finite N, as functions of mass and Fayet-Iliopoulos parameters. We find a simple explicit formula for the partition function of the quiver tail T(SU(N)). This formula opens the way for the analysis of star-shaped quivers and their mirrors (that are the Gaiotto-type theories arising from M5 branes on punctured Riemann surfaces). We provide non-perturbative checks of mirror symmetry for infinite classes of theories and find th…
In this note, using Nekrasov's gauge origami framework, we study two different versions of the the BPS/CFT correspondence - first, the standard AGT duality and, second, the quiver W algebra construction which has been developed recently by Kimura and Pestun. The gauge origami enables us to work with both dualities simultaneously and find exact matchings between the parameters. In our main example of an A-type quiver gauge theory, we show that the corresponding quiver qW-algebra and its representations are closely related to a large-n limit of spherical gl(n) double affine Hecke algebra whose m…
We found a lot of new three dimensional N = 4 mirror pairs generalizing previous considerations on three dimensional generalized quiver gauge theories. We recovered almost all previous discovered mirror pairs with these constructions. One side of these mirror pairs are always the conventional quiver gauge theories. One of our result can also be used to determine the matter content and weakly coupled gauge groups of four dimensional N = 2 generalized quiver gauge theories derived from six dimensional A_N and D_N theory, therefore we explicitly constructed four dimensional S-duality pairs.
In this note we study refined BPS invariants associated with certain quantum line defects in quantum field theories of class $\mathcal{S}$. Such defects can be specified via geometric engineering in the UV by assigning a path on a certain curve. In the IR they are described by framed BPS quivers. We study the associated BPS spectral problem, including the spin content. The relevant BPS invariants arise from the K-theoretic enumerative geometry of the moduli spaces of quiver representations, adapting a construction by Nekrasov and Okounkov. In particular refined framed BPS states are described …
We study BPS line defects in N=2 supersymmetric four-dimensional field theories. We focus on theories of "quiver type," those for which the BPS particle spectrum can be computed using quiver quantum mechanics. For a wide class of models, the renormalization group flow between defects defined in the ultraviolet and in the infrared is bijective. Using this fact, we propose a way to compute the BPS Hilbert space of a defect defined in the ultraviolet, using only infrared data. In some cases our proposal reduces to studying representations of a "framed" quiver, with one extra node representing the…
A large class of N=2 quantum field theories admits a BPS quiver description and the study of their BPS spectra is then reduced to a representation theory problem. In such theories the coupling to a line defect can be modelled by framed quivers. The associated spectral problem characterises the line defect completely. Framed BPS states can be thought of as BPS particles bound to the defect. We identify the framed BPS degeneracies with certain enumerative invariants associated with the moduli spaces of stable quiver representations. We develop a formalism based on equivariant localization to com…
Supersymmetric Sp(k) quantum chromodynamics with 8 supercharges in space-time dimensions 3 to 6 can be realised by two different Type II brane configurations in the presence of orientifolds. Consequently, two types of magnetic quivers describe the Higgs branch of the Sp(k) SQCD theory. This is a salient example of a general phenomenon: a given hyper-Kahler Higgs branch may admit several magnetic quiver constructions. It is then natural to wonder if these different magnetic quivers, which are described by 3d N=4 theories, are dual theories. In this work, the unitary and orthosymplectic magnetic…
Quiver theories arising on D3-branes at orbifold and del Pezzo singularities are studied using mirror symmetry. We show that the quivers for the orbifold theories are given by the soliton spectrum of massive 2d N=2 theory with weighted projective spaces as target. For the theories obtained from the del Pezzo singularities we show that the geometry of the mirror manifold gives quiver theories related to each other by Picard-Lefschetz transformations, a subset of which are simple Seiberg duals. We also address how one indeed derives Seiberg duality on the matter content from such geometrical tra…
We construct and analyze dual N=4 supersymmetric gauge theories in three dimensions with unitary and symplectic gauge groups. The gauge groups and the field content of the theories are encoded in quiver diagrams. The duality exchanges the Coulomb and Higgs branches and the Fayet-Iliopoulos and mass parameters. We analyze the classical and the quantum moduli spaces of the theories and construct an explicit mirror map between the mass parameters and the the Fayet-Iliopoulos parameters of the dual. The results generalize the relation between ALE spaces and moduli spaces of SU(n) and SO(2n) instan…

We propose a string theory realization of three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ quiver gauge theories with special unitary gauge groups. This is most easily understood in type IIA string theory with D4-branes wrapped on holomorphic curves in local K3's, by invoking the Stückelberg mechanism. From the type IIB perspective, this is understood as simply compactifying the familiar Hanany-Witten (HW) constructions on a $T^3$. The mirror symmetry duals are easily derived. We illustrate this with various examples of mirror pairs.
We explore the non-perturbative Dyson-Schwinger equations obeyed by the partition functions of the $Ω$-deformed $\mathcal{N}=2, d=4$ supersymmetric linear quiver gauge theories in the presence of surface defects. We demonstrate that the partition functions of different types of defects (orbifold or vortex strings) are related by analytic continuation. We introduce Darboux coordinates on a patch of the moduli space of flat $SL(N)$-connections on a sphere with special punctures, which generalize the NRS coordinates defined in the $SL(2)$ case. Finally, we compare the generating function of the L…
We study three-dimensional supersymmetric quiver gauge theories with a non-simply laced global symmetry primarily focusing on framed affine $B_{N}$ quiver theories. Using a supersymmetric partition function on a three sphere, and its transformation under S-duality, we study the three-dimensional ADHM quiver for $SO(2N+1)$ instantons with a half-integer Chern-Simons coupling. The theory after S-duality has no Lagrangian, and can not be represented by a single quiver, however its partition function can be conveniently described by a collection of framed affine ${B}_{N}$ quivers. This corresponde…
We study Coulomb branch moduli spaces of a class of three dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ gauge theories whose quiver satisfies the balance condition. The Coulomb branch is described by dressed monopole operators which can be counted using the Monopole formula. We mainly focus on A-type quivers in this paper, using Hilbert Series to study their moduli spaces, and present the interesting pattern which emerges. All of these balanced A-type quiver gauge theories can be realized on brane intervals in Type IIB string theory, where mirror symmetry acts by exchanging the five branes and induces an equiva…
Certain star shaped quivers exhibit a pattern of symmetry enhancement on the Coulomb branch of $3d$ $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric gauge theories. This paper studies a subclass of theories where such global symmetry enhancement occurs through a computation of the Highest Weight Generating Function (HWG) and of the corresponding Hilbert Series (HS), providing a further test of the Coulomb branch formula. This special subclass has a feature in which the HWG takes a particularly simple form, as a simple rational function which is either a product of simple poles (termed freely generated) or a sim…
We construct gravity duals to supersymmetric gauge theories in the presence of unquenched flavor hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation of the gauge group living on the (1+1)-dimensional defect. This configuration is given by the intersection of two sets of D3-branes. Working in the Veneziano limit with large number of colors and flavors we are able to find a closed set of equations describing the dual geometry. We briefly discuss the corresponding solutions for massless flavors as well as in the small flavor limit of massive hypermultiplets. Interestingly, the 1/4-BPS supergravity …
We study the defect groups of $D_p^b(G)$ theories using geometric engineering and BPS quivers. In the simple case when $b=h^\vee (G)$, we use the BPS quivers of the theory to see that the defect group is compatible with a known Maruyoshi-Song flow. To extend to the case where $b\neq h^\vee (G)$, we use a similar Maruyoshi-Song flow to conjecture that the defect groups of $D_p^b(G)$ theories are given by those of $G^{(b)}[k]$ theories. In the cases of $G=A_n, \;E_6, \;E_8$ we cross check our result by calculating the BPS quivers of the $G^{(b)}[k]$ theories and looking at the cokernel of their …
In [1, 2], Nekrasov applied the Bethe/gauge correspondence to derive the $\mathfrak{su}\, (2)$ XXX spin-chain coordinate Bethe wavefunction from the IR limit of a 2D $\mathcal{N}=(2, 2)$ supersymmetric $A_1$ quiver gauge theory with an orbifold-type codimension-2 defect. Later, Bullimore, Kim and Lukowski implemented Nekrasov's construction at the level of the UV $A_1$ quiver gauge theory, recovered his result, and obtained further extensions of the Bethe/gauge correspondence [3]. In this work, we extend the construction of the defect to $A_M$ quiver gauge theories to obtain the $\mathfrak{su}…
Let $X$ be a Nakajima quiver variety and $X'$ its $3d$-mirror. We consider the action of the Picard torus $\mathsf{K}=\mathrm{Pic}(X)\otimes \mathbb{C}^{\times}$ on $X'$. Assuming that $(X')^{\mathsf{K}}$ is finite, we propose a formula for the $\mathsf{K}$-character of the tangent spaces at the fixed points in terms of certain enumerative invariants of $X$ known as vertex functions.
We introduce an algorithm to piecewise dualise linear quivers into their mirror dual. The algorithm uses two basic duality moves and the properties of the $S$-wall which can all be derived by iterative applications of Seiberg-like dualities.
Mirror symmetry is a type of infrared duality in 3D quantum field theory that relates the low-energy dynamics of two distinct ultraviolet descriptions. Though first discovered in the supersymmetric context, it has far-reaching implications for understanding nonperturbative physics in general 3D quantum field theories. We study mirror symmetry in 3D $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric field theories whose Higgs or Coulomb branches realize $D$- and $E$-type Kleinian singularities in the $ADE$ classification, generalizing previous work on the $A$-type case. Such theories include the $SU(2)$ gauge theo…
Within the electrostatic formulation of holographic duals to (balanced) conformal quivers in five and three dimensions, we study Wilson loops in antisymmetric representations. We derive general expressions for various quantities participating in the formalism (VEV of Wilson loops, representation, gauge-node) and apply these to examples, connecting some results present in the bibliography. In the case of three dimensional quivers, we present a relation between Wilson loops in an 'electric' and in the 'magnetic/mirror' descriptions. In a very detailed appendix, we relate the electrostatic and ho…
We revisit the localization computation of the expectation values of 't Hooft operators in $\mathcal{N}=2^*$ SU(N) theory on $\mathbb{R}^3 \times S^1$. We show that the part of the answer arising from "monopole bubbling" on $\mathbb{R}^3$ can be understood as an equivariant integral over a Kronheimer-Nakajima moduli space of instantons on an orbifold of $\mathbb{C}^2$. It can also be described as a Witten index of a certain supersymmetric quiver quantum mechanics with $\mathcal{N}=(4,4)$ supersymmetry. The map between the defect data and the quiver quantum mechanics is worked out for all value…
We describe how the geometry of the Higgs branch of 5d superconformal field theories is transformed under movement along the extended Coulomb branch. Working directly with the (unitary) magnetic quiver, we demonstrate a correspondence between Fayet-Iliopoulos deformations in 3d and 5d mass deformations. When the Higgs branch has multiple cones, characterised by a collection of magnetic quivers, the mirror map is not globally well-defined, however we are able to utilize the correspondence to establish a local version of mirror symmetry. We give several detailed examples of deformations, includi…
We realize four-dimensional N=2 superconformal quiver gauge theories with alternating SO and USp gauge groups as compactifications of the six-dimensional D_N theory with defects. The construction can be used to analyze infinitely strongly-coupled limits and S-dualities of such gauge theories, resulting in a new class of isolated four-dimensional N=2 superconformal field theories with SO(2N)^3 flavor symmetry.
We solve a long standing problem on the computation of the Higgs branch $\mathcal{H}$ of linear quivers with 8 supercharges and with both unitary and special unitary gauge nodes. The solution uses the concept of magnetic quivers, where components of $\mathcal{H}$ are described as 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ Coulomb branches. When the starting quiver is good, there is a single component in $\mathcal{H}$ and the magnetic quiver is a 3d mirror. The magnetic quivers are obtained from studying the brane web for an auxiliary 5d theory (with only special unitary gauge groups), constrained by a new notion call…
We use the exact-deconstruction prescription to lift various squashed-$S^3$ partition functions with supersymmetric-defect insertions to four-dimensional superconformal indices. Starting from three-dimensional circular-quiver theories with vortex-loop-operator insertions, we recover the index of four-dimensional theories in the presence of codimension-two surface defects with (2,2) supersymmetry. The case of deconstruction with Wilson-loop insertions is discussed separately. We provide evidence that a certain prescription leads to the index of four-dimensional theories in the presence of surfa…
We study various duality webs involving the 3d FT[SU(N)] theory, a close relative of the T[SU(N)] quiver tail. We first map the partition functions of FT[SU(N)] and its 3d spectral dual to a pair of spectral dual q-Toda conformal blocks. Then we show how to obtain the FT[SU(N)] partition function by Higgsing a 5d linear quiver gauge theory, or equivalently from the refined topological string partition function on a certain toric Calabi-Yau three-fold. 3d spectral duality in this context descends from 5d spectral duality. Finally we discuss the 2d reduction of the 3d spectral dual pair and stud…
In this paper we investigate the relation between complexified Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates and spectral network coordinates on Seiberg-Witten moduli space. The main technique is the comparison of exact expressions for the expectation value of 't Hooft defects in certain 4D $SU(2)$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theories. We derive an index-like theorem for a class of Dirac operators on singular monopole moduli spaces. Our expression determines the indices of Dirac operators on singular monopole moduli spaces in terms of characteristic numbers for vector bundles over certain Kronheimer-Nakajima quiver v…
We construct a new family of $\text{AdS}_2\times S^2\times S^2$ solutions to Type IIA supergravity with 4 supercharges acting with non-Abelian T-duality on the recent class constructed in arXiv:2107.12277. We focus on a particular solution in this class asymptoting locally to an $\text{AdS}_5$ Gaiotto-Maldacena geometry. This solution allows for a line defect interpretation within the 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFT dual to this geometry, that we study in detail. We show that the defect branes, consisting on a non-trivial intersection of D2-D4-NS5-F1 branes, can be interpreted as baryon vertices withi…
In this work we compare different descriptions of the space of vacua of certain three dimensional N=4 superconformal field theories, compactified on a circle and mass-deformed to N=2 in a canonical way. The original N=4 theories are known to admit two distinct mirror descriptions as linear quiver gauge theories, and many more descriptions which involve the compactification on a segment of four-dimensional N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. Each description gives a distinct presentation of the moduli space of vacua. Our main result is to establish the precise dictionary between these presentations. W…
We consider the lagrangian description of Argyres-Douglas theories of type $A_{2N-1}$, which is a $SU(N)$ gauge theory with an adjoint and one fundamental flavor. An appropriate reformulation allows us to map the moduli space of vacua across the duality, and to dimensionally reduce. Going down to three dimensions, we find that the adjoint SQCD "abelianizes": in the infrared it is equivalent to a $\mathcal{N}=4$ linear quiver theory. Moreover, we study the mirror dual: using a monopole duality to "sequentially confine" quivers tails with balanced nodes, we show that the mirror RG flow lands on …
We consider a pair of quiver varieties (X;X') related by 3d mirror symmetry, where X =T*Gr(k,n) is the cotangent bundle of the Grassmannian of k-planes of n-dimensional space. We give formulas for the elliptic stable envelopes on both sides. We show an existence of an equivariant elliptic cohomology class on X $\times$ X' (the Mother function) whose restrictions to X and X' are the elliptic stable envelopes of those varieties. This implies, that the restriction matrices of the elliptic stable envelopes for X and X' are equal after transposition and identification of the equivariant parameters …
We present a general prescription for constructing 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ Lagrangians for the IR SCFTs that arise from the circle reduction of a large class of Argyres-Douglas theories. The resultant Lagrangian gives a realization of the Higgs branch of the 4d SCFT as a quiver variety, up to a set of decoupled interacting SCFTs with empty Higgs branches. As representative examples, we focus on the families $(A_{p-N-1}, A_{N-1})$ and $D_p(SU(N))$. The Lagrangian in question is generically a non-ADE-type quiver gauge theory involving only unitary gauge nodes with fundamental and bifundamental hyperm…
