Large-scale quantum devices provide insights beyond the reach of classical simulations. However, for a reliable and verifiable quantum simulation, the building blocks of the quantum device require exquisite benchmarking. This benchmarking of large scale dynamical quantum systems represents a major challenge due to lack of efficient tools for their simulation. Here, we present a scalable algorithm based on neural networks for Hamiltonian tomography in out-of-equilibrium quantum systems. We illustrate our approach using a model for a forefront quantum simulation platform: ultracold atoms in optical lattices. Specifically, we show that our algorithm is able to reconstruct the Hamiltonian of an arbitrary size quasi-1D bosonic system using an accessible amount of experimental measurements. We are able to significantly increase the previously known parameter precision.
We discuss how introducing an equilibrium frame, in which a given Hamiltonian has balanced loss and gain terms, can reveal PT symmetry hidden in non-Hermitian Hamiltonians of dissipative systems. Passive PT-symmetric Hamiltonians, in which only loss is present and gain is absent, can also display exceptional points, just like PT-symmetric systems, and therefore are extensively investigated. We demonstrate that non-Hermitian Hamiltonians, which can be divided into a PT-symmetric term and a term commuting with the Hamiltonian, possess hidden PT symmetries. These symmetries become apparent in the…
As the size of quantum devices continues to grow, the development of scalable methods to characterise and diagnose noise is becoming an increasingly important problem. Recent methods have shown how to efficiently estimate Hamiltonians in principle, but they are poorly conditioned and can only characterize the system up to a scalar factor, making them difficult to use in practice. In this work we present a Bayesian methodology, called Bayesian Hamiltonian Learning (BHL), that addresses both of these issues by making use of any or all, of the following: well-characterised experimental control of…
We introduce a phenomenological theory for many-body control of critical phenomena by engineering causally-induced gaps for quantum Hamiltonian systems. The core mechanisms are controlling information flow within and/or between clusters that are created near a quantum critical point. To this end, we construct inhomogeneous quantum phase transitions via designing spatio-temporal quantum fluctuations. We show how non-equilibrium evolution of disordered quantum systems can create new effective correlation length scales and effective dynamical critical exponents. In particular, we construct a clas…
In this work we present a numerical method to solve the set of Dyson-like equations arising the context of non-equilibrium Green's functions. The technique is based on the self-consistent solution of the Dyson equations for the interacting single-particle Green's function once a choice for the self-energy, functional of the single-particle Green's function itself, is done. We briefly review the theory of the non-equilibrium Green's functions in order to highlight the main point useful in discussing the proposed technique. We also discuss the relation between our approach and the textbook appro…
The growing field of quantum computing is based on the concept of a q-bit which is a delicate superposition of 0 and 1, requiring cryogenic temperatures for its physical realization along with challenging coherent coupling techniques for entangling them. By contrast, a probabilistic bit or a p-bit is a robust classical entity that fluctuates between 0 and 1, and can be implemented at room temperature using present-day technology. Here, we show that a probabilistic coprocessor built out of room temperature p-bits can be used to accelerate simulations of a special class of quantum many-body syst…

Exploiting the possibility of temporal variation of the winding number, we have prepared a SSH chain in its {\it stroboscopic} topological state, starting from the trivial one, by application of a periodic perturbation. The periodic driving, we employ here, is adiabatically switched on to break the particle-hole symmetry and generate a chiral mass term in the effective Floquet Hamiltonian; consequently the Floquet Hamiltonian also gets deformed without crossing the gapless quantum critical point. The particle hole symmetry is subsequently restored in the Floquet Hamiltonian by adiabatically sw…
The quantum dynamics of interacting many-body systems has become a unique venue for the realization of novel states of matter. Here we unveil a new class of nonequilibrium states that are eigenstates of an emergent local Hamiltonian. The latter is explicitly time dependent and, even though it does not commute with the physical Hamiltonian, it behaves as a conserved quantity of the time-evolving system. We discuss two examples in which the emergent eigenstate solution can be applied for an extensive (in system size) time: transport in one-dimensional lattices with initial particle (or spin) imb…
The Weyl-Wigner representations for canonical thermal equilibrium quantum states are obtained for the whole class of quadratic Hamiltonians through a Wick rotation of the Weyl-Wigner symbols of Heisenberg and metaplectic operators. The behavior of classical structures inherently associated to these unitaries is described under the Wick mapping, unveiling that a thermal equilibrium state is fully determined by a complex symplectic matrix, which sets all of its thermodynamical properties. The four categories of Hamiltonian dynamics (Parabolic, Elliptic, Hyperbolic, and Loxodromic) are analyzed. …
We study the thermal equilibrium states (KMS states) of infinitely degenerate Hamiltonians, in particular, we study the example of the Landau levels. We classify all KMS states in an example of algebra suitable for describing infinitely degenerate systems and we show that there is no cyclic and separating vector corresponding to the Landau Hamiltonian. Then, we try to reproduce the thermodynamical limit of a finite box as used in the very beginning of the theory of KMS states by Haag Hugenholtz and Winnink. Finally, we discuss the situation from the point of view of non-$σ$-additive probabilit…
We propose a scheme for scalable and robust quantum computing on two-dimensional arrays of qubits with fixed longitudinal coupling. This opens the possibility for bypassing the device complexity associated with tunable couplers required in conventional quantum computing hardware. Our approach is based on driving a subarray of qubits such that the total multi-qubit Hamiltonian can be decomposed into a sum of commuting few-qubit blocks, and then efficient optimization of the unitary evolution within each block. Each driving pulse can implement a target gate on the driven qubits, and at the same …
Path integral quantum Monte Carlo (PIMC) is a method for estimating thermal equilibrium properties of stoquastic quantum spin systems by sampling from a classical Gibbs distribution using Markov chain Monte Carlo. The PIMC method has been widely used to study the physics of materials and for simulated quantum annealing, but these successful applications are rarely accompanied by formal proofs that the Markov chains underlying PIMC rapidly converge to the desired equilibrium distribution. In this work we analyze the mixing time of PIMC for 1D stoquastic Hamiltonians, including disordered transv…
