Experimental studies of the glassy slowdown in molecular liquids indicate that the high-temperature activation energy $E_{\infty}$ of glass-forming liquids is directly related to their glass transition temperature $T_{\text{g}}$. To further investigate such a possible relation between high- and low-temperature dynamics in glass-forming liquids, we analyze the glassy dynamics of binary mixtures using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We consider a binary mixture of charged Lennard-Jones particles and vary the partial charges of the particles, and thus, the high-temperature activation energy and the glass transition temperature of the system. Based on previous results, we introduce a phenomenological model describing relaxation times over the whole temperature regime from high temperatures to temperatures well inside the supercooled regime. By investigating the dynamics of both particle species on molecular and diffusive length scales along isochoric and isobaric pathways, we find a quadratic charge dependence of both $E_{\infty}$ and $T_{\text{g}}$, resulting in an approximately constant ratio of both quantities independent of the underlying observable, the thermodynamic ensemble, and the particle species, and this result is robust against the actual definition of $T_{\text{g}}$. This generic relation between the activation energy and the glass transition temperature indicates that high-temperature dynamics and the glassy slowdown are related phenomena, and the knowledge of $E_{\infty}$ may allow to approximately predict $T_{\text{g}}$.
Physical properties of colloidal materials can be modified by addition of nanoparticles. Within a model of like-charged mixtures of particles governed by effective electrostatic interactions, we explore the influence of charged nanoparticles on the structure and thermodynamic phase stability of charge-stabilized colloidal suspensions. Focusing on salt-free mixtures of particles of high size and charge asymmetry, interacting via repulsive Yukawa effective pair potentials, we perform molecular dynamics simulations and compute radial distribution functions and static structure factors. Analysis o…
We investigated the effect of charge on the membrane morphology of giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs) composed of various mixtures containing charged lipids. We observed the membrane morphologies by fluorescent and confocal laser microscopy in lipid mixtures consisting of a neutral unsaturated lipid [dioleoylphosphatidylcholine (DOPC)], a neutral saturated lipid [dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC)], a charged unsaturated lipid [dioleoylphosphatidylglycerol (DOPG$^{\scriptsize{(-)}}$)], a charged saturated lipid [dipalmitoylphosphatidylglycerol (DPPG$^{\scriptsize{(-)}}$)], and cholesterol (C…
For binary solvent mixtures composed of ions and two kinds of polar solvents, electric double layer near a charged object is strongly affected by not only the binary solvent composition but also nature of solvents such as volume and dipole moment of a solvent molecule. Accounting for difference in sizes of solvents and orientational ordering of solvent dipoles, we theoretically obtain general expressions for the spatial distribution functions of solvents and ions, in planar geometry and within the mean-field approach. Although focusing on long-range electrostatic interaction, we neglect short-…
In this work, five mixtures with different concentrations of banana-shaped and calamitic compounds have been prepared and subsequently studied by polarizing optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray diffraction on non-oriented samples. The phase sequences and molecular parameters of the binary systems are presented.
The self-assembly of binary nanoparticle superlattices from colloidal mixtures is a promising method for the fabrication of complex colloidal co-crystal structures. However, binary mixtures often form amorphous or metastable phases instead of the thermodynamically stable phase. Here we show that in binary mixtures of differently sized spherical particles, an excess of the smaller component can promote -- and, in some cases, may be necessary for -- the self-assembly of a binary co-crystal. Using computer simulations, we identify two mechanisms responsible for this phenomenon. First, excess smal…
The influence of size differences, shape, mass and persistent motion on phase separation in binary mixtures has been intensively studied. Here we focus on the exclusive role of diffusivity differences in binary mixtures of equal-sized particles. We find an effective attraction between the less diffusive particles, which are essentially caged in the surrounding species with the higher diffusion constant. This effect leads to phase separation for systems above a critical size: A single close-packed cluster made up of the less diffusive species emerges. Experiments for testing of our predictions …
Structural correlations between colloids in a binary mixture of charged and uncharged spheres are calculated using computer simulations of the primitive model with explicit microions. For aqueous suspensions in a solvent of large dielectric constant, the traditional Derjaguin-Landau-Vervey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory of linear screening, supplemented with hard core interactions, reproduces the structural correlations obtained in the full primitive model quantitatively. However for lower dielectric contrast, the increasing Coulomb coupling between the micro- and macroions results in strong deviation…
We consider a phase field crystal modeling approach for binary mixtures of interacting active and passive particles. The approach allows to describe generic properties for such systems within a continuum model. We validate the approach by reproducing experimental results, as well as results obtained with agent-based simulations, for the whole spectrum from highly dilute suspensions of passive particles to interacting active particles in a dense background of passive particles.
We study the competitive irreversible adsorption of a binary mixture of monomers and square-shaped particles of linear size $R$ on the square lattice. With the random sequential adsorption model, we investigate how the jamming coverage and percolation properties depend on the size ratio $R$ and relative flux $F$. We find that the onset of percolation of monomers is always lower for the binary mixture than in the case with only monomers ($R=1$). Moreover, for values $F$ below a critical value, the higher is the flux or size of the largest species, the lower is the value of the percolation thres…
We propose a model describing the phase behavior of two-component membranes consisting of binary mixtures of electrically charged and neutral lipids. We take into account the structural phase transition (main-transition) of the hydrocarbon chains, and investigate the interplay between this phase transition and the lateral phase separation. The presence of charged lipids significantly affects the phase behavior of the multi-component membrane. Due to the conservation of lipid molecular volume, the main-transition temperature of charged lipids is lower than that of neutral ones. Furthermore, as …
We present a microfluidic method leading to accurate measurements of the mutual diffusion coefficient of a liquid binary mixture over the whole solute concentration range in a single experiment. This method fully exploits solvent pervaporation through a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) membrane to obtain a steady concentration gradient within a microfluidic channel. Our method is applicable for solutes which cannot permeate through PDMS, and requires the activity and the density over the full concentration range as input parameters. We demonstrate the accuracy of our methodology by measuring the …
We consider the thermal undulation, or shape fluctuation, of an almost planar fluid membrane surrounded by the same near-critical binary fluid mixtures on both sides. A weak preferential attraction is assumed between the membrane and one component of the mixture. We use the Gaussian free-energy functional to study the equilibrium average of the undulation amplitude within the linear approximation with respect to the amplitude. According to our result given by a simple analytic formula, the ambient near-criticality tends to suppress the undulation of a membrane, and this suppression effect can …
We numerically study structure and dynamics of single files composed of active particles, as well as, active-passive binary mixtures. Our simulation results show that when the persistent length of self-propelled particles is much larger than the average inter-particle separation and the self-propulsion velocity is larger than the thermal velocity, particles in the file exist as clusters of various sizes. Average cluster size and structures of the file are very sensitive to self-propulsion properties, thermal fluctuations and composition of the mixture. In addition to the variation of file comp…
We formulate the scaled particle theory for a general mixture of hard isosceles triangles and calculate different phase diagrams for the one-component fluid and for certain binary mixtures. The fluid of hard triangles exhibits a complex phase behavior: (i) the presence of a triatic phase with sixfold symmetry, (ii) the isotropic-uniaxial nematic transition is of first order for certain ranges of aspect ratios, and (iii) the one-component system exhibits nematic-nematic transitions ending in critical points. We found the triatic phase to be stable not only for equilateral triangles but also for…
When granular mixtures of different sizes are fluidized, each species spontaneously separates and condenses to form patterns. Although granular segregation has been extensively studied, the inability to directly observe the time evolution of the internal structure hinders the understanding of the mechanism of segregation dynamics driven by surface flow. In this study, we report rich band dynamics, including a self-replicating band, in a horizontally shaken granular mixture in a quasi-two-dimensional container where the granules formed steady surface waves. Direct observation of surface flow an…
We prepared a buoyancy matched binary mixture of polydisperse polystyrene microgel spheres of size ratio 0.785 and at a volume fraction of 0.567 just below the kinetic glass transition. In line with theoretical expectations, a eutectic phase behavior was observed, but only a minor fraction of the samples crystallized at all. By adding a short non-adsorbing polymer we enforce inter-species fractionation into coexisting pure component crystals, which in turn also shows signs of intra-species fractionation. We show that in formerly inaccessible regions of the phase diagram binary hard sphere phys…
Exact relations between charge-density functions determining the total Coulomb energy and the dielectric constant for a mixture of neutral and charged site-site molecules
We investigate the sedimentation dynamics of a binary mixture, the species of which differ by their Stokes coefficients but are identical otherwise. We analyze the sedimentation dynamics and the morphology of the final deposits using Brownian dynamics simulations for mixtures with a range of sedimentation velocities of both species. In addition, we use the lattice Boltzmann method to study hydrodynamic effects. We found a threshold in the difference of the sedimentation velocities above which the species in the final deposit are segregated. The degree of segregation increases with the differen…
Physico-chemical study of polymer mixtures formed by a polycation and a zwitterionic copolymer in aqueous solution and upon adsorption onto negatively charged surfaces
We explore structural correlations of strongly asymmetric mixtures of binary charged colloids within the primitive model of electrolytes considering large charge and size ratios of 10 and higher. Using computer simulations with explicit microions, we obtain the partial pair correlation functions between the like-charged colloidal macroions. Interestingly the big-small correlation peak amplitude is smaller than that of the big-big and small-small macroion correlation peaks, which is unfamiliar for additive repulsive interactions. Extracting optimal effective microion-averaged pair interactions …

When simulating multicomponent mixtures via the Lattice Boltzmann Method, it is desirable to control the mutual diffusivity between species while maintaining the viscosity of the solution fixed. This goal is herein achieved by a modification of the multicomponent Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) evolution equations by introducing two different timescales for mass and momentum diffusion. Diffusivity is thus controlled by an effective drag force acting between species. Numerical simulations confirm the accuracy of the method for neutral binary and charged ternary mixtures in bulk conditions. The simu…
