Information geometry is an emergent branch of probability theory that consists of assigning a Riemannian differential geometry structure to the space of probability distributions. We present an information geometric investigation of gases following the Fermi-Dirac and the Bose-Einstein quantum statistics. For each quantum gas, we study the information geometry of the curved statistical manifolds associated with the grand canonical ensemble. The Fisher-Rao information metric and the scalar curvature are computed for both fermionic and bosonic models of non-interacting particles. In particular, by taking into account the ground state of the ideal bosonic gas in our information geometric analysis, we find that the singular behavior of the scalar curvature in the condensation region disappears. This is a counterexample to a long held conjecture that curvature always diverges in phase transitions.
The gauge field of a uniform line of magnetic monopoles is created using a single Laguerre-Gauss laser mode and a gradient in the physical magnetic field. We study the effect of these monopoles on a Bose condensed atomic gas, whose vortex structure transforms when more than six monopoles are trapped within the cloud. Finally, we study this transition with the collective modes.
The exact Maxwell-Boltzmann (MB), Bose-Einstein (BE) and Fermi-Dirac (FD) entropies and probabilistic distributions are derived by the combinatorial method of Boltzmann, without Stirling's approximation. The new entropy measures are explicit functions of the probability and degeneracy of each state, and the total number of entities, N. By analysis of the cost of a "binary decision", exact BE and FD statistics are shown to have profound consequences for the behaviour of quantum mechanical systems.

We investigate a radial spin hedgehog, analogous to the Dirac monopole, in an optically trapped atomic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate. By joining together a monopole-antimonopole pair, we may form a vortex line with free ends. We numerically simulate the three-dimensional dynamics and imaginary time relaxation of these structures to nonsingular textures and show they can be observable for realistic experimental parameters.
A possible quantum-mechanical origin of statistical mechanics is discussed, and microcanonical and canonical ensembles of bosons and fermions are derived from the stationary Schrödinger equation in a unified manner. The interaction Hamiltonians are constructed by the use of the discrete phase operators and the gauge-theoretical structure associated with them. It is shown how the interaction Hamiltonians stipulated by the gauge symmetry generate the specific patterns of entanglement that are desired for establishing microcanonical ensembles. A discussion is also made about the interrelation bet…
The Harmonic Oscillator Potential Perturbed by a Combination of Linear and Non-linear Dirac Delta Interactions with Application to Bose-Einstein Condensation
We study Bose-Einstein condensation in a harmonic trap with a dimple potential. We specifically consider the case of a tight and deep dimple potential which is modelled by a Dirac delta function. This allows for simpler, explicit numerical and analytical investigations of noninteracting gases. Thus, the Schrodinger equation is used instead of the Gross-Pitaevski equation. Calculating the atomic density, chemical potential, critical temperature and condensate fraction, the role of the relative depth of the dimple potential with respect to the harmonic trap in large condensate formation at enhan…
We investigate the quantum phase diagram of Bose-Fermi mixtures of ultracold dipolar particles trapped in one-dimensional optical lattices in the thermodynamic limit. With the presence of nearest-neighbor (N.N.) interactions, a long-ranged ordered crystalline phase (Bose-Fermi solid) is found stabilized between a Mott insulator of bosons and a band-insulator of fermions in the limit of weak inter-site tunneling ($J$). When $J$ is increased, such a Bose-Fermi solid can be quantum melted into a Bose-Fermi liquid through either a two-stage or a three-stage transition, depending on whether the cry…
We study the phase diagram of a mixture of Bose-Einstein condensate and a two-component Fermi gas. In particular, we identify the regime where the homogeneous system becomes unstable against phase separation. We show that, under proper conditions, the phase separation phenomenon can be exploited as a robust probe of Fermi superfluid.
We present a density-functional theory for the one dimensional harmonically trapped Bose-Fermi mixture with repulsive contact interactions. The ground state density distribution of each component is obtained by solving the Kohn-Sham equations numerically based on the Local Density Approximation and the exact solution for the homogeneous system given by Bethe ansatz method. It is shown that for strong enough interaction, a considerable amount of fermions are repelled out of the central region of the trap, exhibiting partial phase separation of Bose and Fermi components. Oscillations emerge in t…
The one-dimensional interacting Bose-Fermi mixtures, exhibiting quantum phase transitions at zero temperature, are particularly valuable for the study of quantum critical phenomena. In the present paper, we analytically study quantum phase diagram, equation of state and quantum criticality of the Bose-Fermi mixture using the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations. We show that thermodynamical properties display universal scaling behaviour at quantum criticality. Furthermore, quantum criticality of the Bose-Fermi mixture in an harmonic trap is also studied within the local density approximation. …
We consider a strongly interacting one-dimensional (1D) Bose-Fermi mixture confined in a hard wall trap or a harmonic oscillator trap with a tunable $δ$-function barrier at the trap center. The mixture consists of 1D Bose gas with repulsive interactions and of 1D noninteracting spin-aligned Fermi gas, both species interacting through hard-core interactions. Using a generalized Bose-Fermi mapping, we calculated the reduced single-particle density matrix and the momentum distribution of the gas as a function of barrier strength and the parity of particle number. The secondary peaks in the moment…
Motivated by recent developments in the experimental study of Bose-Fermi mixtures, we investigate ground-state phase diagrams and excitation spectra for Bose-Fermi mixtures in a three-dimensional (3D) optical lattice. The Gutzwiller approximation is used to identify a new phase in which both superfluid bosons and metal fermions coexist. As a useful probe to identify the quantum phases, we also calculate the excitation spectra. In Mott insulator phase, two excitation features appear in the spectra that correspond to particle and hole excitations. In superfluid phase, there are Bogoliubov modes …
The study of low density, ultracold atomic Fermi gases is a promising avenue to understand fermion superfluidity from first principles. One technique currently used to bring Fermi gases in the degenerate regime is sympathetic cooling through a reservoir made of an ultracold Bose gas. We discuss a proposal for trapping and cooling of two-species Fermi-Bose mixtures into optical dipole traps made from combinations of laser beams having two different wavelengths. In these bichromatic traps it is possible, by a proper choice of the relative laser powers, to selectively trap the two species in such…
We study a single quantized vortex in the fermionic component of a mixture of Fermi superfluid and Bose-Einstein condensate. As the density ratio between the boson and the fermion components is tuned, we identify a transition in the vortex-core structure, across which fermions in the vortex core become completely depleted even in the weak-coupling Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer regime. This is accompanied by changes in key properties of the vortex state, as well as by the localization of the Bose-Einstein condensate in the vortex core. The transition in the vortex-core structure can be experimental…
We discuss a sympathetic cooling strategy that can successfully mitigate fermion-hole heating in a dilute atomic Fermi-Bose mixture and access the temperature regime in which the fermions behave as a Fermi liquid. We introduce an energy-based formalism to describe the temperature dynamics with which we study a specific and promising mixture composed of 6Li and 87Rb. Analyzing the harmonically trapped mixture, we find that the favourable features of this mixture are further enhanced by using different trapping frequencies for the two species.
A method is proposed to describe Fermi or Bose systems coupled to one or several heat baths composed of fermions and/or bosons. The method, called Coupled Equations of Motion method, properly includes non-Markovian effects. The approach is exact in the Full-Coupling approximation when only bosonic particles are present in the system and baths. The approach provides an approximate treatment when fermions are present either in the system and/or in one or several environments. The new approach has the advantage to properly respect the Pauli exclusion principle for fermions during the evolution. W…
We consider a one dimensional interacting bose-fermi mixture with equal masses of bosons and fermions, and with equal and repulsive interactions between bose-fermi and bose-bose particles. Such a system can be realized in experiments with ultracold boson and fermion isotopes in optical lattices. We use the Bethe-ansatz technique to find the ground state energy at zero temperature for any value of interaction strength and density ratio between bosons and fermions. We prove that the mixture is always stable against demixing. Combining exact solution with the local density approximation we calcul…
The stability of Bose-Fermi gases trapped in an isotropic potentials at ultracold temperature is strongly influenced by the interaction between the fermions and the bosons. At zero temperature, the stability criterion is given in this paper using variation method, the results show that whether a fermion-boson mixture is stable depends mainly on the interaction between the fermions and the bosons. For finite temperature, however, the stability is not only related to the coupling constants, but also to the temperature. The stability conditions for finite temperature are also derived and discuss …
We derive the criteria for the Thomas-Fermi regime of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in cigar, pancake and spherical geometries. This also naturally gives the criteria for the mean-field one- and two-dimensional regimes. Our predictions, including the Thomas-Fermi density profiles, are shown to be in excellent agreement with numerical solutions. Importantly, the anisotropy of the interactions has a profound effect on the Thomas-Fermi/low-dimensional criteria.
