The gauge field of a uniform line of magnetic monopoles is created using a single Laguerre-Gauss laser mode and a gradient in the physical magnetic field. We study the effect of these monopoles on a Bose condensed atomic gas, whose vortex structure transforms when more than six monopoles are trapped within the cloud. Finally, we study this transition with the collective modes.
Preparation of molecular quantum gas promises novel applications including quantum control of chemical reactions, precision measurements, quantum simulation and quantum information processing. Experimental preparation of colder and denser molecular samples, however, is frequently hindered by fast inelastic collisions that heat and deplete the population. Here we report the formation of two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) of spinning $g-$wave molecules by inducing pairing interactions in an atomic condensate. The trap geometry and the low temperature of the molecules help reducing …
We describe the transition of $N$ weakly interacting atoms into a Bose-Einstein condensate within a number-conserving quantum master equation theory. Based on the separation of time scales for condensate formation and non-condensate thermalization, we derive a master equation for the condensate subsystem in the presence of the non-condensate environment under the inclusion of all two body interaction processes. We numerically monitor the condensate particle number distribution during condensate formation, and derive a condition under which the unique equilibrium steady state of a dilute, weakl…
We calculate the condensate fraction and the condensate and non-condensate spatial and momentum distribution of the Bose-Hubbard model in a trap. From our results, it is evident that using approximate distributions can lead to erroneous experimental estimates of the condensate. Strong interactions cause the condensate to develop pedestal-like structures around the central peak that can be mistaken as non-condensate atoms. Near the transition temperature, the peak itself can include a significant non-condensate component. Using distributions generated from QMC simulations, experiments can map t…
We report Dirac monopoles with polar-core vortex induced by spin-orbit coupling in ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensates, which are attached to two nodal vortex lines along the vertical axis. These monopoles are more stable in the time scale of experiment and can be detected through directly imaging vortex lines. When the strength of spin-orbit coupling increases, Dirac monopoles with vortex can be transformed into those with square lattice. In the presence of spin-orbit coupling, increasing the strength of interaction can induce a cyclic phase transition from Dirac monopoles with polar-core…
We discuss the effect of anomalous quantum-reflection of Bose-Einstein condensates as a screening effect, that is created by the condensate itself. We derive an effective, time-independent single-mode approach, that allows us to define different paths of reflection. We compare our theory with experimental results.
I present an interconversion currents algebra for an atom-molecule Bose-Einstein condensate model and use it to get the quantum dynamics of the currents. For different choices of the Hamiltonian parameters I get different currents dynamics.
Collapsing Bose-Einstein condensates are rich and complex quantum systems for which quantitative explanation by simple models has proved elusive. We present new experimental data on the collapse of high density Rb-85 condensates with attractive interactions and find quantitative agreement with the predictions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The collapse data and measurements of the decay of atoms from our condensates allow us to put new limits on the value of the Rb-85 three-body loss coefficient K_3 at small positive and negative scattering lengths.
We experimentally observe the decay dynamics of deterministically created isolated monopoles in spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates. As the condensate undergoes a change between magnetic phases, the isolated monopole gradually evolves into a spin configuration hosting a Dirac monopole in its synthetic magnetic field. We characterize in detail the Dirac monopole by measuring the particle densities of the spin states projected along different quantization axes. Importantly, we observe the spontaneous emergence of nodal lines in the condensate density that accompany the Dirac monopole. We also demon…
We theoretically study macroscopic entanglement between a magnetically trapped Bose-Einstein condensate and a superconducting loop. We treat the superconducting loop in a quantum superposition of two different flux states coupling with the magnetic trap to generate macroscopic entanglement. The scheme also provides a platform to investigate interferometry with an entangled Bose Einstein condensate and to explore physics at the quantum-classical interface.
Using the Dirac and the Yang monopole in spinor condensates as examples, we show that interactions can stretch the point singularity of a monopole into an extended manifold, whose shape is strongly influenced by the sign of interaction. The singular manifold will cause the first and second Chern number to assume non-integer values when it intersects the surface on which the Chern numbers are calculated. This leads to a gradual decrease of the Chern numbers as the monopole moves away from the surface of integration, instead of the sudden jump characteristic of a point monopole. A gradual change…
We simulate the decay dynamics of an isolated monopole defect in the nematic vector of a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate during the polar-to-ferromagnetic phase transition of the system. Importantly, the decay of the monopole occurs in the absence of external magnetic fields and is driven principally by the dynamical instability due to the ferromagnetic spin-exchange interactions. An initial isolated monopole is observed to relax into a polar-core spin vortex, thus demonstrating the spontaneous transformation of a point defect of the polar order parameter manifold to a line defect of the ferro…
The condensate number distribution during the transition of a dilute, weakly interacting gas of N=200 bosonic atoms into a Bose-Einstein condensate is modeled within number conserving master equation theory of Bose-Einstein condensation. Initial strong quantum fluctuations occuring during the exponential cycle of condensate growth reduce in a subsequent saturation stage, before the Bose gas finally relaxes towards the Gibbs-Boltzmann equilibrium.
We devise a microscopic scattering approach to probe the excitation spectrum of a Bose-Einstein condensate. We show that the experimentally accessible scattering cross section exhibits universal Ericson fluctuations, with characteristic properties rooted in the underlying classical field equations.

We investigate the elastic scattering of Bose-Einstein condensates at shallow periodic and disorder potentials. We show that the collective scattering of the macroscopic quantum object couples to internal degrees of freedom of the Bose-Einstein condensate such that the Bose-Einstein condensate gets depleted. As a precursor for the excitation of the Bose-Einstein condensate we observe wave chaos within a mean-field theory.
We theoretically demonstrate that a pair of Dirac monopoles with opposite synthetic charges can be created within a single spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate by steering the spin degrees of freedom by external magnetic fields. Although the net synthetic magnetic charge of this configuration vanishes, both the monopole and the antimonopole are accompanied by vortex filaments carrying opposite angular momenta. Such a Dirac dipole can be realized experimentally by imprinting a spin texture with a nonlinear magnetic field generated by a pair of coils in a modified Helmholtz configuration. We also inv…
We discuss the comment [ arXiv:1102.2943] by E. Kozik about "Dispersive bottleneck delaying thermalization of turbulent Bose-Einstein Condensates [arXiv:1007.4441]".
Using a time-dependent modified nonlinear Schrödinger equation (m-NLSE) -- where the conventional chemical potential proportional to the density is replaced by the one inferred from Lieb-Liniger's exact solution -- we study frequencies of the collective monopole excitations of a one-dimensional (1D) Bose gas. We find that our method accurately reproduces the results of a recent experimental study [E. Haller et al., Science Vol. 325, 1224 (2009)] in the full spectrum of interaction regimes from the ideal gas, through the mean-field regime, through the mean-field Thomas-Fermi regime, all the way…
The dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate of atoms having attractive interactions is studied using quantum many-body simulations. The collapse of the condensate by quantum tunneling is numerically demonstrated and the tunneling rate is calculated. The correlation properties of the quantum many-body state are investigated.
We study the monopole (breathing) mode of a finite temperature Bose-Einstein condensate in an isotropic harmonic trap recently developed by Lobser et al. [Nat.~Phys., \textbf{11}, 1009 (2015)]. We observe a nonexponential collapse of the amplitude of the condensate oscillation followed by a partial revival. This behavior is identified as being due to beating between two eigenmodes of the system, corresponding to in-phase and out-of-phase oscillations of the condensed and noncondensed fractions of the gas. We perform finite temperature simulations of the system dynamics using the Zaremba-Nikuni…
We study center-of-mass oscillations of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in the vicinity of a superconducting surface. We show that the magnetic field of the magnetic dipoles induces eddy currents in the superconductor, which act back on the Bose-Einstein condensate. This leads to a shift of its oscillation frequency and to an anharmonic coupling of the Bose-Einstein condensate with the superconductor. The anharmonicity creates a coupling to one of the collective modes of the condensate that can be resonantly enhanced, if the parameters of the condensate are chosen properly. This provides a …
Synthetic spin-tensor-momentum coupling has recently been proposed to realize in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. Here we study bright solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates with spin-tensor-momentum coupling and spin-orbit coupling. The properties and dynamics of spin-tensor-momentum-coupled and spin-orbit-coupled bright solitons are identified to be different. We contribute the difference to the different symmetries.
I introduce two family of exactly solvable models for multiatomic hetero-nuclear and homo-nuclear molecular Bose-Einstein condensates through the algebraic Bethe ansatz method. The conserved quantities of the respective models are also showed.
We report explicitly a novel family of exact PT-symmetric solitons and further study their spontaneous PT symmetry breaking, stabilities and collisions in Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in a PT-symmetric harmonic trap and a Hermite-Gaussian gain/loss potential. We observe the significant effects of mean-field interaction by modifying the threshold point of spontaneous PT symmetry breaking in Bose-Einstein condensates. Our scenario provides a promising approach to study PT-related universal behaviors in non-Hermitian quantum system based on the manipulation of gain/loss potential in Bose-Ein…
We show that starting from the Heisenberg equations of motion for Bose annihilation and creation operators and using an appropriate transformation, we can split the Bogoliubov mode into a free particle mode and the amplitude mode. We show this for both the free Bose gas as well as the Bose gas in an optical lattice.
The non-equilibrium spatial dynamics in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate were excited by controlled miscible-immiscible transition, in which immiscible condensates with domain structures are transferred to the miscible condensates by changing the internal state of 87Rb atoms. The subsequent evolution exhibits the oscillation of spatial structures involving component mixing and separation. We show that the larger total energy of the miscible system results in a higher oscillation frequency. This investigation introduces a new technique to control the miscibility and the spatial degrees …
The role of complex potentials in single-body Schrődinger equation has been studied intensively. We study the quantum coherence for degenerate Bose gases in complex potentials, when the exchange symmetry of identical bosons is considered. For initially independent Bose-Einstein condensates, it is shown that even very weak imaginary potential can induce perfect quantum coherence between different condensates. The scheme to observe imaginary potential induced quantum coherence is discussed.
To extend the Bose-Einstein (BE) distribution to fractional order, we turn our attention to the differential equation, $df/dx =-f-f^2$. It is satisfied with the stationary solution, $f(x)=1/(e^{x+μ}-1)$, of the Kompaneets equation, where $μ$ is the constant chemical potential. Setting $R=1/f$, we obtain a linear differential equation for $R$. Then, the Caputo fractional derivative of order $p$ ($p>0$) is introduced in place of the derivative of $x$, and fractional BE distribution is obtained, where function ${\rm e}^x$ is replaced by the Mittag-Leffler (ML) function $E_p(x^p)$. Using the integ…
We reveal the connection of the recent numerical observations of Krstulovic and Brachet [arXiv:1007.4441] with the general theory of relaxation kinetics of the strongly non-equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensates.
The Bose-stimulated self-organization of a quasi-two dimensional non-equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensate in an in-plane potential is proposed. We obtained the solution of the nonlinear, driven-dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equation for a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in an external asymmetric parabolic potential within the method of the spectral expansion. We found that, in sharp contrast to previous observations, the condensate can spontaneously acquire a soliton-like shape for spatially homogenous pumping. This condensate soliton performs oscillatory motion in a parabolic trap and, also, …
We demonstrate theoretically that analogues of D-branes in string theory can be realized in rotating, phase-separated, two-component Bose-Einstein condensates and that they are observable using current experimental techniques. This study raises the possibility of simulating D-branes in the laboratory.
In certain field theoretical models, composite solitons consisting of a domain wall and vortex lines attached to the wall have been referred to as D-brane solitons. We show that similar composite solitons can be realized in phase-separated two-component Bose-Einstein condensates. We discuss the similarities and differences between topological solitons in the Abelian-Higgs model and those in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates. Based on the formulation of gauge theory, we introduce the "boojum charge" to characterize the "D-brane soliton" in Bose-Einstein condensates.
