We derive the criteria for the Thomas-Fermi regime of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in cigar, pancake and spherical geometries. This also naturally gives the criteria for the mean-field one- and two-dimensional regimes. Our predictions, including the Thomas-Fermi density profiles, are shown to be in excellent agreement with numerical solutions. Importantly, the anisotropy of the interactions has a profound effect on the Thomas-Fermi/low-dimensional criteria.
By incorporating the zero-point energy contribution we derive simple and accurate extensions of the usual Thomas-Fermi (TF) expressions for the ground-state properties of trapped Bose-Einstein condensates that remain valid for an arbitrary number of atoms in the mean-field regime. Specifically, we obtain approximate analytical expressions for the ground-state properties of spherical, cigar-shaped, and disk-shaped condensates that reduce to the correct analytical formulas in both the TF and the perturbative regimes, and remain valid and accurate in between these two limiting cases. Mean-field q…
We derive general approximate formulas that provide with remarkable accuracy the ground-state properties of any mean-field scalar Bose-Einstein condensate with short-range repulsive interatomic interactions, confined in arbitrary cylindrically symmetric harmonic traps. Our formulation is even applicable for condensates containing a multiply quantized axisymmetric vortex. We have checked the validity of our formulas by numerically solving the 3D Gross-Pitaevskii equation.
The dynamics of quantum degenerate two-dimensional dipolar excitons confined in electrostatic traps is analyzed and compared to recent experiments. The model results stress the importance of artificial trapping for achieving and sustaining a quantum degenerate exciton fluid in such systems and suggest that a long-lived, spatially uniform, and highly degenerate exciton system was experimentally produced in those electrostatic traps.
Possible signatures of a super-Tonks-Girardeau gas in bosonic systems of trapped quasi-one-dimensional dipoles are discussed at zero temperature. We provide estimation of the frequency of the lowest compressional mode and compare it to analytical results derived using harmonic approach in the high density regime. We construct an exact mapping of the ground-state wave function of one-dimensional dipolar system of bosons, fermions and Bose-Fermi mixture and conclude that local properties and energy are the same at zero temperature. A question of to which extent the dipolar potential can be treat…
We consider a system of quantum degenerate spin polarized fermions in a harmonic trap at zero temperature, interacting via dipole-dipole forces. We introduce a variational Wigner function to describe the deformation and compression of the Fermi gas in phase space and use it to examine the stability of the system. We emphasize the important roles played by the Fock exchange term of the dipolar interaction which results in a non-spherical Fermi surface.
We study the equilibrium properties of a dipolar Fermi gas at finite temperatures. We introduce a variational ansatz for the phase-space distribution function that can describe the deformation in both real and momentum space. The effect of dipole--dipole interactions on the thermal equilibrium is discussed with particular emphasis on the deformation in momentum space. We examine the stability of the system by varying the temperature, trap aspect ratio, and the dipole moment. In addition, we discuss how the deformation in both real and momentum space can be observed in the high-temperature regi…
We evaluate the dipolar oscillations of a harmonically trapped fermion gas containing thermal bosonic impurities as a function of the anisotropy of the trap, from the numerical solution of the Vlasov-Landau equations for the one-body phase-space distribution functions. Starting from a situation in which the two components of the gaseous mixture perform almost independent oscillations inside a spherical trap, we demonstrate that different collision behaviors arise for oscillations in different directions as the trap is deformed into an elongated cigar-like shape. An increase in the anisotropy o…
We study the equilibrium properties of dipolar Bose and Fermi gases at finite temperatures. We recently developed a variational ansatz for the phase-space distribution function of a dipolar Fermi gas at finite temperatures. We extend the variational formalism to a Bose gas and discuss the effect of dipolar interactions with different statistics on the thermal equilibrium, with particular emphasis on the deformation in momentum space. We examine the stability of the system by varying the temperature, trap aspect ratio and the dipole moment. In addition, we discuss how deformation in both real a…
Under the framework of the semiclassical theory, we investigate the equilibrium-state properties of a spin polarized dipolar Fermi gas through full numerical calculation. We show that the Fermi surfaces in both real and momentum spaces are stretched along the attractive direction of dipolar interaction. We further verify that the deformed Fermi surfaces can be well approximated by ellipsoids. In addition, the deformation parameters slightly depend on the local real- and momentum-space densities. We also study the interaction strength dependence of the energy and real- and momentum-space densit…
We present a detailed study of the BCS pairing transition in a trapped polarized dipolar Fermi gas. In the case of a shallow nearly spherical trap, we find the decrease of the transition temperature as a function of the trap aspect ratio and predict the existence of the optimal trap geometry. The latter corresponds to the highest critical temperature of the BCS transition for a given number of particles. We also derive the phase diagram for an ultracold trapped dipolar Fermi gases in the situation, where the trap frequencies can be of the order of the critical temperature of the BCS transition…
We calculate the excitation modes of a 1D dipolar quantum gas confined in a harmonic trap with frequency $ω_0$ and predict how the frequency of the breathing n=2 mode characterizes the interaction strength evolving from the Tonks-Girardeau value $ω_2=2ω_0$ to the quasi-ordered, super-strongly interacting value $ω_2=\sqrt{5}ω_0$. Our predictions are obtained within a hydrodynamic Luttinger-Liquid theory after applying the Local Density Approximation to the equation of state for the homogeneous dipolar gas, which are in turn determined from Reptation Quantum Monte Carlo simulations. They are sho…
We investigate the time taken for global collapse by a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate. Two semi-analytical approaches and exact numerical integration of the mean-field dynamics are considered. The semi-analytical approaches are based on a Gaussian ansatz and a Thomas-Fermi solution for the shape of the condensate. The regimes of validity for these two approaches are determined, and their predictions for the collapse time revealed and compared with numerical simulations. The dipolar interactions introduce anisotropy into the collapse dynamics and predominantly lead to collapse in the plane pe…
We report new results for the Thomas-Fermi groundstate and the quadrupolar modes of density oscillations of a spin- polarized dipolar interacting Bose-Einstein condensate for the case when the external magnetic field is not orientated parallel to a principal axis of a harmonic anisotropic trap.
We propose a scheme for the measurement of the s-wave scattering length $a$ of an atom or molecule with significant dipole-dipole interaction with an accuracy at the percent level. The frequencies of the collective oscillations of a Bose-Einstein condensate are shifted by the magnetic dipole interaction. The shift is polarization dependent and proportional to the ratio $ε_{dd}$ of dipolar and s-wave coupling constants. Measuring the differences in the frequencies for different polarization we can extract the value of $ε_{dd}$ and thus measure $a$. We calculate the frequency shifts for a large …
We investigate dynamical properties of a one-component Fermi gas with dipole-dipole interaction between particles. Using a variational function based on the Thomas-Fermi density distribution in phase space representation, the total energy is described by a function of deformation parameters in both real and momentum space. Various thermodynamic quantities of a uniform dipolar Fermi gas are derived, and then instability of this system is discussed. For a trapped dipolar Fermi gas, the collective oscillation frequencies are derived with the energy-weighted sum rule method. The frequencies for th…
I discuss a Bogoliubov inequality for obtaining a rigorous bound on the maximal axial extension of inhomogeneous one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates. An explicit upper limit for the aspect ratio of a strongly elongated, harmonically trapped Thomas-Fermi condensate is derived.
We investigate the stability and the free expansion of a trapped dipolar Fermi gas. We show that stabilizing the system relying on tuning the trap geometry is generally inefficient. We further show that the expanded density profile always gets stretched along the attractive direction of dipolar interaction. We also point out that by switching off the dipolar interaction simultaneously with the trapping potential, the deformation of momentum distribution can be directly observed.
We calculate the critical rotation frequency at which a vortex state becomes energetically favorable over the vortex-free ground state in a harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensate whose atoms have dipole-dipole interactions as well as the usual s-wave contact interactions. In the Thomas-Fermi (hydrodynamic) regime, dipolar condensates in oblate cylindrical traps (with the dipoles aligned along the axis of symmetry of the trap) tend to have lower critical rotation frequencies than their purely s-wave contact interaction counterparts. The converse is true for dipolar condensates in prolate…
We investigate the structure of trapped Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with long-range anisotropic dipolar interactions. We find that a small perturbation in the trapping potential can lead to dramatic changes in the condensate's density profile for sufficiently large dipolar interaction strengths and trap aspect ratios. By employing perturbation theory, we relate these oscillations to a previously-identified "roton-like" mode in dipolar BECs. The same physics is responsible for radial density oscillations in vortex states of dipolar BECs that have been predicted previously.
Hard-core dipolar bosons trapped in a parallel stack of N>=2 1D optical lattices (tubes) can develop several phases made of composites of particles from different tubes: superfluids, supercounterfluids and insulators as well as mixtures of those. Bosonization analysis shows that these phases are threshold-less with respect to the dipolar interaction, with the key "control knob" being filling factors in each tube, provided the inter-tube tunneling is suppressed. The effective ab-initio quantum Monte Carlo algorithm capturing these phases is introduced and some results are presented.
Using exact continuous quantum Monte Carlo techniques, we study the zero and finite temperature properties of a system of harmonically trapped one dimensional spin 1/2 fermions with short range interactions. Motivated by experimental searches for modulated Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinikov states, we systematically examine the impact of a spin imbalance on the density profiles. We quantify the accuracy of the Thomas-Fermi approximation, finding that for sufficiently large particle numbers (N > 100) it quantitatively reproduces most features of the exact density profile. The Thomas-Fermi approxima…
We investigate the collapse of a trapped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate. This is performed by numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and the novel application of the Thomas-Fermi hydrodynamic equations to collapse. We observe regimes of both global collapse, where the system evolves to a highly elongated or flattened state depending on the sign of the dipolar interaction, and local collapse, which arises due to dynamically unstable phonon modes and leads to a periodic arrangement of density shells, disks or stripes. In the adiabatic regime, where ground states are followed, c…
We consider the design of two-dimensional electrostatic traps for dipolar indirect excitons. We show that the excitons dipole-dipole interaction, combined with the in-plane electric fields that arise due to the trap geometry, constrain the maximal density and lifetime of trapped excitons. We derive an analytic estimate of these values and determine their dependence on the trap geometry, thus suggesting the optimal design for high density trapping as a route for observing excitonic Bose-Einstein condensation.
The dynamics of a ring of vortices in two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates (with and without an additional vortex at the center) is studied for (1) a uniform condensate in a rigid cylinder and (2) a nonuniform trapped condensate in the Thomas-Fermi limit. The sequence of ground states (within these single-ring configurations) is determined as a function of the external rotation frequency by comparing the free energy of the various states. For each ground state, the Tkachenko-like excitations and the associated dynamical stability are analyzed.
We discuss the model of a $D$-dimensional confined electron gas in which the particles are trapped by a harmonic potential. In particular, we study the non-interacting kinetic and exchange energies of finite-size inhomogeneous systems, and compare the resulting Thomas-Fermi and Dirac coefficients with various uniform electron gas paradigms. We show that, in the thermodynamic limit, the properties of this model are identical to those of the $D$-dimensional Fermi gas.
We analyze the effects of imbalancing the populations of two-component trapped fermions, in the BEC limit of the attractive interaction between different fermions. Starting from the gap equation with two fermionic chemical potentials, we derive a set of coupled equations that describe composite bosons and excess fermions. We include in these equations the processes leading to the correct dimer-dimer and dimer-fermion scattering lengths. The coupled equations are then solved in the Thomas-Fermi approximation to obtain the density profiles for composite bosons and excess fermions, which are rele…
