Using an effective field theory approach for higher-spin fields, we derive the interactions of colour singlet and electrically neutral particles with a spin higher than unity, concentrating on the spin-3/2, spin-2, spin-5/2 and spin-3 cases. We compute the decay rates and production cross sections in the main channels for spin-3/2 and spin-2 states at both electron-positron and hadron colliders, and identify the most promising novel experimental signatures for discovering such particles at the LHC. The discussion is qualitatively extended to the spin-5/2 and spin-3 cases. Higher-spin particles exhibit a rich phenomenology and have signatures that often resemble the ones of supersymmetric and extra-dimensional theories. To enable further studies of higher-spin particles at collider and beyond, we collect the relevant Feynman rules and other technical details.
We examine how the production of TeV scale black holes at colliders is influenced by the presence of Lovelock higher-curvature terms in the action of models with large extra dimensions. Such terms are expected to arise on rather general grounds, e.g., from string theory and are often used in the literature to model modifications to the Einstein-Hilbert action arising from quantum and/or stringy corrections. While adding the invariant which is quadratic in the curvature leads to quantitative modifications in black hole properties, cubic and higher invariants are found to produce significant qua…
Evidence of a new particle with mass ~125 GeV decaying into a pair of tau leptons at the Large Hadron Collider spurs interest in ascertaining its spin in this channel. Here we present a comparative study between spin-0 and spin-2 nature of this new particle, using spin correlations and decay product directions. The TauSpinner algorithm is used to re-weight distributions from qqbar -> gamma/Z -> tau+ tau- sample to simulate a spin-2 state exchange. The method is based on supplementing the Standard Model matrix elements with those arising from presence of a new interaction. Studies with simulate…
We summarise the present status of the proton spin problem and the physics possibilities for future polarized ep and pp colliders. This summary is based on the presentations and discussion sessions at the workshop ``The Spin Structure of the Proton and Polarized Collider Physics'' (Trento, July 23-28, 2001).
We consider the production of spin 3/2 quarks in hadron-hadron and photon-photon colliders. The cross sections at LHC energy is large enough to observe such exotic quarks up to a mass of a few TeV.
We study all the possible spin asymmetries that can arise in back-to-back electron-jet production, $ep\rightarrow e+\text{jet}+X$, as well as the associated jet fragmentation process, $ep\rightarrow e+ \text{jet} (h)+X$, in electron-proton collisions. We derive the factorization formalism for these spin asymmetries and perform the corresponding phenomenology for the kinematics relevant to the future electron ion collider. In the case of unpolarized electron-proton scattering, we also give predictions for azimuthal asymmetries for the HERA experiment. This demonstrates that electron-jet product…
We discuss spin physics, Guido Altarelli's contribution to it, and what we still have to learn. We set out in particular a programme for incorporating constraints from semi-inclusive data into global fits of polarized PDFs, and discuss the need for the EIC to increase the precision and kinematic coverage of current measurements.
We study the theory and phenomenology of massive spin-2 fields during the inflation with nonzero background chemical potential, and extend the cosmological collider physics to tensor modes. We identify a unique dimension-5 and parity-violating chemical potential operator for massive spin-2 fields, which leads to a ghost-free linear theory propagating one scalar mode and two tensor modes. The chemical potential greatly boosts the production of one tensor mode even for very heavy spin-2 particles, and thereby leads to large and distinct cosmological collider signals for massive spin-2 particles.…
The SPD experiment at the future NICA collider at JINR (Dubna, Russia) aims to investigate the nucleon spin structure and polarization phenomena in collisions of longitudinally and transversely polarized protons and deuterons at $\sqrt{s}$ up to 27 GeV and luminosity up to 10$^{32}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. Measurement of asymmetries in the Drell-Yan pairs, charmonium and prompt photon production can provide an access to the full set of leading twist TMD PDFs in nucleons. The experimental setup is planned as a universal 4$π$ detector for a wide range of physics tasks.
Top quark pairs are produced with strongly correlated spins in the partonic reactions $q\bar{q}\to t\bar{t}$ and $gg\to t\bar{t}$. A complete description of these effects in terms of the spin density matrix of the $t\bar{t}$ system in leading order QCD is given. We further discuss the prospects to observe the spin-spin correlations at $p\bar{p}$ and $pp$ colliders by measuring suitable angular correlations among the $t$ and $\bar{t}$ decay products.
It is demonstrated that measurements of the spin asymmetry for di-jet production at future polarized colliders appear to be particularly suited for a first determination of the so far unmeasured parton densities of circularly polarized photons.
We analyze the spin correlations of the top quark pairs produced at Photon Linear Colliders. We employ the circular polarized photon beams and general spin basis for the top quark pair. We consider general spin bases to find a strong spin correlation between produced top quark and anti-top quark. We show the cross-section in these bases and discuss the characteristics of results.
We discuss the polarization and spin correlations of top quarks produced above threshold at a future linear collider, including QCD radiative corrections.
The impact of higher-order final-state photonic corrections on the precise determination of the W-boson mass at the Tevatron and LHC colliders is evaluated. In the presence of realistic selection criteria, the shift in the W mass from a fit to the transverse mass distribution is found to be about 10 MeV in the $W \to μν$ channel and almost negligible in the $W \to e ν$ channel. The calculation, which is implemented in a Monte Carlo event generator for data analysis, can contribute to reduce the uncertainty associated to the W mass measurement at future hadron collider experiments.
We show that top-quark pairs are produced in an essentially unique spin configuration in polarized $e^+e^-$ colliders at all energies above the threshold region. Since the directions of the electroweak decay products of polarized top-quarks are strongly correlated to the top-quark spin axis, this unique spin configuration leads to a distinctive topology for top-quark pair events which can be used to constrain anomalous couplings to the top-quark. A significant interference effect between the {\it longitudinal} and {\it transverse} W-bosons in the decay of polarized top-quarks is also discussed…
We discuss the spin properties of top quark pairs produced at hadron colliders at next-to-leading order in the coupling constant alpha_s of the strong interaction. Specifically we present, for some decay channels, results for differential angular distributions that are sensitive to t tbar spin correlations.
We consider higher-order QCD corrections for vector boson production at hadron colliders. We present recent results on transverse-momentum resummation for Z production. Moreover we show numerical results from a new fully exclusive next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) calculation.
Future hadron collider experiments will allow for a detailed investigation of $t\bar{t}$ spin correlation effects. In this talk, recent progress in the theoretical description of these effects is reported. In particular, next-to-leading order results for the $t\bar t$ spin correlations in $q\bar{q}\to t\bar{t}X$ are presented, using various spin quantization axes.
We study the phenomena of spin rotation and depolarization of high-energy particles in crystals in the range of high energies that will be available at Hadron Collider (LHC) and Future Circular Collider (FCC). It is shown that these phenomena can be used to measure the anomalous magnetic moments of short-lived particles in this range of energies. We also demonstrate that the phenomenon of particle spin depolarization in crystals provides a unique possibility of measuring the anomalous magnetic moment of negatively-charged particles (e.g., beauty baryons), for which the channeling effect is ham…
We study the potential of future high energy e+e- colliders to probe excited neutrino signals in different channels coming from the single production process via gauge interactions. We calculate the production cross section, decay widths and branching ratios of excited spin-3/2 neutrinos according to their effective currents and we compare them with that of the spin-1/2 ones. The signals and corresponding backgrounds are examined in detail to get accessible limits on the masses and couplings of excited spin-3/2 neutrinos.
We study the production of a single resonance at the LHC and its decay into a pair of Z bosons. We demonstrate how full reconstruction of the final states allows us to determine the spin and parity of the resonance and restricts its coupling to vector gauge bosons. Full angular analysis is illustrated with the simulation of the production and decay chain including all spin correlations and the most general couplings of spin-zero, -one, and -two resonances to Standard Model matter and gauge fields. We note implications for analysis of a resonance decaying to other final states.
We show how to observe sizable angular correlations between the decay products of the top quark and those of the anti-top quark in top quark pair production and decay at hadron colliders. These correlations result from the large asymmetry in the rate for producing like-spin versus unlike-spin top quark pairs provided the appropriate spin axes are used. The effects of new physics at production or decay on these correlations are briefly discussed.
We study the single production of excited spin-3/2 and spin-1/2 leptons in future high energy $e^+e^-$ collisions. We calculate the production cross section and decay widths of excited spin-3/2 and spin-1/2 leptons according to their effective currents. We show that these possible new excited states can be probed up to the mass $m^*$ ~ $\sqrt{s}$ depending on their couplings to leptons and gauge bosons. We present the angular distributions of final state particles as a measure to discriminate between an excited spin-3/2 and spin-1/2 lepton signal. The signals and the corresponding backgrounds …
We propose techniques to observe the correlation of the spins of top quarks and antiquarks at the Tevatron and the LHC. Observation of the spin correlation would confirm that the top quark decays before its spin flips, and would place a lower bound on the top-quark width and V_tb. The spin correlation may also be a useful tool to study the weak decay amplitude of the top quark.
We investigate the potentialities offered by the study of J/psi exclusive photo-production in ultra-peripheral collisions at a fixed-target experiment using the proton and lead LHC beams (generically denoted as AFTER@LHC) on hydrogen targets and at RHIC in the collider mode. We compare the expected counting rates in both set-ups. Studying Single-Transverse-Spin Asymmetries (A_N) in such a process provides a direct path to the proton Generalised Parton Distribution (GPD) E_g(x,xi,t). We evaluate the expected precision on A_N for realistic conditions with the LHCb detector in pH(pol) and PbH(pol…
Future hadron collider experiments are expected to record large to huge samples of $t\bar t$ events. The analysis of these data with respect to $t\bar t$ spin-spin correlations requires precise predictions of the production of these quark pairs in a general spin configuration. Therefore we have computed, at next-to-leading order (NLO) in the QCD coupling, the spin density matrices describing $t\bar t$ production by quark antiquark annihilation, which is the dominant production process at the Tevatron. Moreover we have computed the strength of the $t\bar t$ spin correlation at NLO, using variou…
Spin correlations, using a generic spin basis, are investigated to leading order in QCD for top quark production at lepton colliders. Even though, these radiative corrections induce an anomalous gamma/Z magnetic moment for the top quarks and allow for single, real gluon emission, their effects on the top quark spin orientation are very small. The final results are that the top (or anti-top) quarks are produced in an essentially unique spin configuration in polarized lepton collisions even after including the O(alpha_{s}) QCD corrections.
We analyze the reach of Linear Colliders (LC)s for models of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking. We show that LCs can efficiently test the compositeness scale, identified with the mass of the new spin-one resonances, till the maximum energy in the center-of-mass of the colliding leptons. In particular we analyze the Drell-Yan processes involving spin-one intermediate heavy bosons decaying either leptonically or into two Standard Model (SM) gauge bosons. We also analyze the light Higgs production in association with a SM gauge boson stemming also from an intermediate spin-one heavy vector.
We discuss the single transverse-spin asymmetry (SSA) to be observed in the $D$-meson production with large transverse-momentum in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering, $e p^\uparrow \rightarrow e D X$. This contribution is embodied as a twist-3 mechanism in the collinear factorization, which is induced by purely gluonic correlation inside the transversely-polarized nucleon, in particular, by the three-gluon correlation effects. The complete formula for the corresponding SSA in the leading-order QCD is expressed in terms of the four independent gluonic correlation functions and reveals the…
A possibility to measure the spin and spin-spin correlations of a chargino pair is investigated in the process electron positron -> chargino_1 anti-chargino_1 -> (neutralino_1 quark anti-quark) (neutralino_1 quark anti-quark) at future linear-collider energies. The total and the differential cross sections are calculated by the GRACE system which allows for the full spin correlation. Experimental sensitivity of the measurements are examined by assuming the limited detector resolution, the initial state radiation and the beam-beam effect (beamstrahlung). It is found that generally the spin-spin…
We discuss in detail top quark polarization in above-threshold (t \bar t)-production at a polarized linear e^+ e^- collider. We pay particular attention to the minimization and maximization of the polarization of the top quark by tuning the longitudinal polarization of the e^+ and e^- beams. The polarization of the top quark is calculated in full next-to-leading order QCD. We also discuss the beam polarization dependence of the longitudinal spin-spin correlations of the top and antitop quark spins.
We study the production cross sections for squarks and gluinos in collision of longitudinally polarized hadrons. The corresponding polarized partonic cross sections are computed in leading order supersymmetric QCD. The resulting asymmetries are evaluated for the polarized proton collider RHIC, as well as for hypothetical polarized options of the Tevatron and the LHC. These asymmetries turn out to be sizable over a wide range of supersymmetric particle masses, thus potentially opening a window to detailed sparticle spectroscopy at future polarized hadron colliders.
We analyse the angular momentum distribution of black holes produced in high energy collisions in space-times with extra spatial dimensions. We show that the black hole spin significantly affects the energy and angular spectra of Hawking radiation. Our results show the experimental sensitivity to the angular momentum distribution and provide tests of black hole production dynamics.
Spin correlations of $Λ$-hyperons embedded in the QCD strings formed in high energy collider experiments provide unique insight into their locality and entanglement features. We show from general considerations that while the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality is less stringent for such states, they provide a benchmark for quantum-to-classical transitions induced by varying i) the associated hadron multiplicity, ii) the spin of nucleons, iii) the separation in rapidity between pairs, and iv) the kinematic regimes accessed. These studies also enable the extraction of quantitative measures of…
In theories with large extra dimensions, we study the top spin correlations at the Large Hadron Collider. The s-channel process mediated by graviton Kaluza-Klein modes contributes to the top-antitop pair production in addition to the Standard Model processes, and affects the resultant top spin correlations. We calculated the full density matrix for the top-antitop pair production. With the fundamental scale of the extra dimensional theory below 2 TeV, we find a sizable deviation of the top spin correlations from the Standard Model one.
We consider the production process e-e+ -> Gγof invisible gravitons (G) at future linear colliders. We discuss whether the angular distribution of the photon (γ) can be used to measure the spin of the invisible graviton, or of any other invisible objects produced. We propose a method based on the Fourier expansion of the transverse energy squared moment distribution of the photon. We provide justification for this method, and confirm, especially for the case of two extra dimensions, that the method is valid within a realistic setup, which includes the simulation of the Standard Model backgroun…
We study the transverse single-spin asymmetry with a $\sinϕ_S$ modulation in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering. Particularly, we consider the case in which the transverse momentum of the final state hadron is integrated out. Thus, the asymmetry is merely contributed by the coupling of the transversity distribution function $h_1(x)$ and the twist-3 collinear fragmentation function $\tilde{H}(z)$. Using the available parametrization of $h_1(x)$ from SIDIS data and the recent extracted result for $\tilde{H}(z)$, we predict the $\sinϕ_S$ asymmetry for charged and neutral pion production at …
We study methods for reconstructing the momenta of invisible particles in cascade decay chains at hadron colliders. We focus on scenarios, such as SUSY and UED, in which new physics particles are pair produced. Their subsequent decays lead to two decay chains ending with neutral stable particles escaping detection. Assuming that the masses of the decaying particles are already measured, we obtain the momenta by imposing the mass-shell constraints. Using this information, we develop techniques of determining spins of particles in theories beyond the standard model. Unlike the methods relying on…
Opening talk presented at the Adriatico Research Conference -- Trends in Collider Spin Physics and at the RIKEN Symposium -- Spin Structure of the Nucleon. We present an overview of the opportunities to explore QCD at a very high energy polarized hadron collider. We review connections to low energy flavor physics, transverse spin in QCD and higher twist. It is clear that polarized colliders will provide a wealth of new information about the behavior of quarks and gluons inside hadrons complementing that available from lepton scattering and other more familiar probes of hadron structure.
We present a phenomenological study of the single-transverse spin asymmetry in azimuthal correlations of two jets produced nearly "back-to-back" in pp collisions at RHIC. We properly take into account the initial- and final-state interactions of partons that can generate this asymmetry in QCD hard-scattering. Using distribution functions fitted to the existing single-spin data, we make predictions for various weighted single-spin asymmetries in dijet correlations that are now readily testable at RHIC.
Applying the connection between the parton Wigner distribution and orbital angular momentum (OAM), we investigate the probe of the gluon OAM in hard scattering processes at the planned electron-ion collider. We show that the single longitudinal target-spin asymmetry in the hard diffractive dijet production is very sensitive to the gluon OAM distribution. The associated spin asymmetry leads to a characteristic azimuthal angular correlation of $\sin(ϕ_q -ϕ_Δ)$, where $ϕ_Δ$ and $ϕ_q$ are the azimuthal angles of the proton momentum transfer and the relative transverse momentum between the quark-an…
We study effects of the scale invariant hidden sector, unparticle, proposed by Georgi, on top spin correlation at the Large Hadron Collider. Assuming no flavor changing interaction between the unparticles and the Standard Model particles, there arises the top-antitop quark pair production process through virtual unparticle exchanges in the s-channel in addition to the Standard Model processes. In particular, we consider contributions of scalar and vector unparticles and find that these make sizable deviations of the top spin correlation from the Standard Model one.
We investigate the spin correlations in top quark pair production near threshold at the $ e^- e^+ $ linear collider. Comparing with the results above the threshold region, we find that near the threshold region the off-diagonal basis, the optimized decomposition of the top quark spins above the threshold region, does not exist, and the beamline basis is the optimal basis, in which there are the dominant spin components: the up-down (UD) component for $e_L^- e^+$ scattering and the down-up (DU) component for $e_R^- e^+$ scattering can make up more than 50% of the total cross section, respective…
We explore the effects of extra neutral gauge boson involved in the supersymmetric E6 model on the spin configuration of the top quark pair produced at the polarized e- e+ collider. Generic mixing terms are considered including kinetic mixing terms as well as mass mixing. In the off-diagonal spin basis of the standard model, we show that the cross sections for the suppressed spin configurations can be enhanced with the effects of the Z' boson through the modification of the spin configuration of produced top quark pair enough to be measured in the Linear Colliders, which provides the way to ob…
We present results of CHARYBDIS2, a new Monte Carlo simulation of black hole production and decay at hadron colliders in theories with large extra dimensions and TeV-scale gravity. The main new feature of CHARYBDIS2 is a full treatment of the spin-down phase of the decay process using the angular and energy distributions of the associated Hawking radiation. Also included are improved modelling of the loss of angular momentum and energy in the production process as well as a wider range of options for the Planck-scale termination of the decay. The new features allow us to study the effects of b…
The energy dependence of the production cross section of a light Higgs boson is studied at threshold and compared to the expectations of several spin assumptions. Cross section measurements at three centre-of-mass energies with an integrated luminosity of 20 fb-1 allow the confirmation of the scalar nature of the Higgs Boson.
Electron Ion Collider is a future high energy facility for studies of the structure of the nucleon. Three-dimensional parton structure is one of the main goals of EIC. In momentum space Transverse Momentum Dependent Distributions (TMDs) are the key ingredients to map such a structure. At leading twist spin structure of spin-1/2 hadron can be described by 8 TMDs. Experimentally these functions can be studied in polarised SIDIS experiments. We discuss Sivers distribution function that describes distribution of unpolarised quarks in a transversely polarised nucleon and transversity that measures …
We explore the phenomenological implications at colliders for the existence of higher-curvature gravity as extensions to both the Randall-Sundrum(RS) and Arkani-Hamed, Dimopoulos and Dvali(ADD) scenarios. Such terms are expected to arise on rather general grounds from ultraviolet completions of General Relativity, e.g., from string theory. In the Randall-Sundrum model these terms shift the mass spectrum and couplings of the graviton tower. In the case of ADD they can lead to a threshold for the production of long-lived black holes.
We discuss cross sections for $tW$ production in proton-proton collisions at the LHC and at higher-energy colliders with energies of up to 100 TeV. We find that, remarkably, the soft-gluon corrections are numerically dominant even at very high collider energies. We present results with soft-gluon corrections at approximate NNLO and approximate N$^3$LO matched to complete NLO results. These higher-order corrections are large and need to be included for better theoretical accuracy and smaller scale dependence. Total cross sections as well as top-quark and $W$-boson transverse-momentum and rapidi…
QCD motivated polarized parton distributions, evolved directly in $x$-space, are used to predict rates for prompt photon production at RHIC centre of mass energies. Various scenarios for the polarized gluon distributions are considered and compared, and the possibility of using large $p_T$ processes in polarized $pp$ collision experiments to choose between them is analyzed.
