We present results of CHARYBDIS2, a new Monte Carlo simulation of black hole production and decay at hadron colliders in theories with large extra dimensions and TeV-scale gravity. The main new feature of CHARYBDIS2 is a full treatment of the spin-down phase of the decay process using the angular and energy distributions of the associated Hawking radiation. Also included are improved modelling of the loss of angular momentum and energy in the production process as well as a wider range of options for the Planck-scale termination of the decay. The new features allow us to study the effects of black hole spin and the feasibility of its observation in such theories.
In this talk, we summarize the collider phenomenology and recent experimental results for various models of extra dimensions, including the large extra dimensions (ADD model), warped extra dimensions (Randall-Sundrum model), TeV$^{-1}$-sized extra dimensions with gauge bosons in the bulk, universal extra dimensions, and an 5D SU(5) SUSY GUT model in AdS space.
The phenomenology of large, warped, and universal extra dimensions is reviewed. Characteristic signals are emphasized rather than an extensive survey. This is the writeup of lectures given at the Theoretical Advanced Study Institute in 2004.
Motivated by the electroweak hierarchy problem, we consider theories with two extra dimensions in which the four-dimensional scalar fields are components of gauge boson in full space. We explore the Nielsen-Olesen instability for SU(N) on a torus, in the presence of a magnetic background. A field theory approach is developed, computing explicitly the minimum of the complete effective potential, including tri-linear and quartic couplings and determining the symmetries of the stable vacua. We also develop appropriate gauge-fixing terms when both Kaluza-Klein and Landau levels are present and int…
In this proceeding, the phenomenology of Universal Extra Dimensions (UED), in which all the Standard Model fields propagate, is explored. We focus on models with one universal extra dimension, compactified on an $S_1/Z_2$ orbifold. We revisit calculations of Kaluza-Klein (KK) dark matter without an assumption of the KK mass degeneracy including all possible coannihilations. We then contrast the experimental signatures of low energy supersymmetry and UED.
We describe a highly predictive model for supersymmetry breaking in 5 dimensions. We develop its phenomenology and the capabilities for discovery and measurement at various colliders.
The Arkani-Hamed-Dimopoulos-Dvali and the Randall-Sundrum models with extra spacelike dimensions, recently proposed as a solution to the hierarchy problem, are reviewed. We discuss their basic properties and phenomenological effects of particle interactions at high energies, predicted whithin these models.
We discuss the collider phenomenology of the model of Minimal Universal Extra Dimensions (MUED) at the Large hadron Collider (LHC). We derive analytical results for all relevant strong pair-production processes of two level 1 Kaluza-Klein partners and use them to validate and correct the existing MUED implementation in the fortran version of the PYTHIA event generator. We also develop a new implementation of the model in the C++ version of PYTHIA. We use our implementations in conjunction with the CHECKMATE package to derive the LHC bounds on MUED from a large number of published experimental …
We discuss the phenomenology of $(1,1)$-mode adjoint scalars in the framework of two Universal Extra Dimensions. The Kaluza-Klein (KK) towers of these adjoint scalars arise in the 4-dimensional effective theory from the 6th component of the gauge fields after compactification. Adjoint scalars can have KK-number conserving as well as KK-number violating interactions. We calculate the KK-number violating operators involving these scalars and two Standard Model fields. Decay widths of these scalars into different channels have been estimated. We have also briefly discussed pair-production and sin…
We study the phenomenology of a supersymmetric bulk in the scenario of large extra dimensions. The virtual exchange of gravitino KK states in selectron pair production in polarized \epem collisions is examined. The leading order operator for this exchange is dimension six, in contrast to that of graviton KK exchange which induces a dimension eight operator at lowest order. Some kinematic distributions for selectron production are presented. These processes yield an enormous sensitivity to the fundamental higher dimensional Planck scale.
We present a general model with universal extra dimensions in the presence of the bulk fermion masses and boundary localized kinetic terms, which are generically allowed by symmetries of five dimensional gauge theory. We provide a comprehensive analysis for a general UED model, including Kaluza-Klein mass spectra, their interactions with the SM particles, and constraints from LHC, electroweak tests, and dark matter experiments. Finally we show current bounds on the size of allowed universal bulk mass and universal brane-localized terms.
We study several phenomenologies of an E_6 inspired extra U(1) model with S_4 flavor symmetry. With the assignment of left-handed quarks and leptons to S_4-doublet, SUSY flavor problem is softened. As the extra Higgs bosons are neutrinophilic, baryon number asymmetry in the universe is realized by leptogenesis without causing gravitino overproduction. We find that the allowed region for the lightest chargino mass is given by 100-140 GeV, if the dark matter is a singlino dominated neutralino whose mass is about 36 GeV.
Spinor--Vector Duality (SVD) has been observed in worldsheet constructions of heterotic--string compactifications. Recently, its realisation in the effective field theory limit of string vacua in six and five dimensions has been investigated. The SVD has been used to construct a string model that allows for an extra family universal $U(1)$, with the standard $E_6$ embedding of its charges, to remain unbroken down to low scales. Anomaly cancellation of the extra $U(1)$ charges mandates the existence of additional matter states at the extra $U(1)$ breaking scale, which affects precision measurem…
We investigate the collider implications of Split Universal Extra Dimensions. The non-vanishing fermion mass in the bulk, which is consistent with the KK-parity, largely modifies the phenomenology of Minimal Universal Exta Dimensions. We scrutinize the behavior of couplings and study the discovery reach of the Tevatron and the LHC for level-2 Kaluza-Klein modes in the dilepton channel, which would indicates the presence of the extra dimensions. Observation of large event rates for dilepton resonances can result from a nontrivial fermion mass profile along the extra dimensions, which, in turn, …
We evaluate the impact of recent developments in hadron phenomenology on extracting possible fundamental tensor interactions beyond the standard model. We show that a novel class of observables, including the chiral-odd generalized parton distributions, and the transversity parton distribution function can contribute to the constraints on this quantity. Experimental extractions of the tensor hadronic matrix elements, if sufficiently precise, will provide a so far absent testing ground for lattice QCD calculations.
We analyse the angular momentum distribution of black holes produced in high energy collisions in space-times with extra spatial dimensions. We show that the black hole spin significantly affects the energy and angular spectra of Hawking radiation. Our results show the experimental sensitivity to the angular momentum distribution and provide tests of black hole production dynamics.
Theories with extra dimensions of inverse TeV size (or larger) predict a multitude of signals which can be searched for at present and future colliders. In this paper, we review the different phenomenological signatures of a particular class of models, universal extra dimensions, where all matter fields propagate in the bulk. Such models have interesting features, in particular Kaluza-Klein (KK) number conservation, which makes their phenomenology similar to that of supersymmetric theories. Thus, KK excitations of matter are produced in pairs, and decay to a lightest KK particle (LKP), which i…
We review the phenomenology of models with flat, compactified extra dimensions where all of the Standard Model fields are allowed to propagate in the bulk, known as Universal Extra Dimensions (UED). UED make for an interesting TeV-scale physics scenario, featuring a tower of Kaluza-Klein (KK) states approximately degenerate in mass at the scale set by the inverse size of the compactification radius. KK parity, the four-dimensional remnant of momentum conservation in the extra dimensions, implies two basic consequences: (1) contributions to Standard Model observables arise only at loop level, a…
The aim of these proceedings is to present the main predictions of the Randall-Sundrum model with custodial protection for particle-antiparticle mixing and rare decays of K and B_(s,d) mesons, putting particular attention on the testability of the resulting NP effects at future experiments. Before giving numerical results, we discuss theoretical expectations, residing in the flavor structure of the model. The high energy scale M_KK is chosen in such a way that direct searches of new particles at the LHC are possible, still being consistent with electroweak precision observables.
We study the effect of the infrared (IR) geometry on the phenomenology of warped extra dimensions with gauge and fermion fields in the bulk. We focus in particular on a "mass gap" metric which is AdS in the ultraviolet, but asymptotes to flat space in the IR, breaking conformal symmetry. These metrics can be dialed to approximate well the geometries arising in certain classes of warped string compactifications. We find, similar to our earlier results on the Kaluza-Klein (KK) graviton, that these metrics give rise to phenomenologically significant shifts in the separation of KK gauge modes in t…
In this talk, we report unitarity constraints and phenomenological studies at the Large Hadron Collider for the extra Higgs bosons of a Composite 2-Higgs Doublet Model.
The minimal model of Universal Extra Dimensions (MUED) is briefly reviewed. We explain how the cross-sections for Higgs production via gluon fusion and decay into two photons are modified, relative the the Standard Model (SM) values, by KK particles running in loops, leading to an enhancement of the gg to h to two photons and gg to h to W+W- cross-sections. ATLAS and CMS searches for the SM Higgs in these channels are reinterpreted in the context of MUED and used to place new limits on the MUED parameter space. Only a small region of between 1 and 3 GeV around mh = 125 GeV for 500 GeV < 1/R < …
Motivated by multi-throat considerations, we study the phenomenological implications of a bulk axion in a slice of AdS_5 with a large extra dimension: k~0.01 eV, kR > 1. In particular, we compare axion physics with a warped geometry to axions in flat compactifications. As in flat compactification scenarios, we find that the mass of the axion can become independent from the underlying Peccei-Quinn scale. Surprisingly, we find that in warped extra dimensions the axion's invisibility, cosmological viability, and basic phenomenology remain essentially unaltered in comparison to axions in flat comp…
In this paper we review the properties of the 1/$N_f$ expansion in multidimensional theories. Contrary to the usual perturbative expansion it is renormalizable and contains only logarithmic divergencies. The price for it is the presence of ghost states which, however, in certain cases do not contribute to physical amplitudes. In this case the theory is unitary and one can calculate the cross-sections. As an example we consider the differential cross section of elastic $eq \to eq$ scattering in $D=7,11,...$-dimensional world. We look also for the unification of the gauge couplings in multidimen…
The phenomenology of the low scale U(1)_{B-L} extension of the standard model and its implications at LHC is presented. In this model, an extra gauge boson corresponding to B-L gauge symmetry and an extra SM singlet scalar (heavy Higgs) are predicted. We show a detailed analysis of both heavy and light Higgses decay and production in addition to the possible decay channels of the new gauge boson. We find that the cross sections of the SM-like Higgs production are reduced by ~ 20%-30%, while its decay branching ratios remain intact. The extra Higgs has relatively small cross sections and the br…
The phenomenological constraints on extra neutral gauge bosons at present and at future colliders are reviewed. Special attention is paid to the influence of radiative corrections, systematic errors, and kinematic cuts on the Z' constraints. Simple estimates of the Z' constraints from different reactions are derived. They make the physical origin of these constraints transparent. The results existing in the literature are summarized and compared with the estimates. The consequence of model assumptions on the Z' constraints is discussed. The paper starts with an overview of Z' parameters and th…
Large Extra Dimensions Models have been proposed to remove the hierarchy problem and give an explanation why the gravity is so much weaker than the other three forces. In this work, we present an analysis of Monte Carlo data events for new physics signatures of spin-2 Graviton in context of ADD model with total dimensions $D=4+δ,$ $δ= 1,2,3,4,5,6 $ where $ δ$ is the extra special dimension, this model involves missing momentum $P_{T}^{miss}$ in association with jet in the final state via the process $pp(\bar{p}) \rightarrow G+jet$, Also, we present an analysis in context of the RS model with 5…
We study radion phenomenology in the context of flavor shining in warped extra dimension models. In this unique setup, originally proposed by Rattazzi and Zaffaroni, solutions to the gauge hierarchy problem and the new physics flavor problem are unified. A special role is played by the vacuum energy on the branes, that naturally allows for flavon stabilization and parametrically raises the radion mass. We note that the radion mass squared is suppressed only by the log of the weak-Planck hierarchy, and it is in the favored range of the standard model Higgs. We emphasize that the radion to di-ph…
We propose a scenario of gravity mediated supersymmetry breaking (gravity mediation) in a supersymmetric Randall-Sundrum model. In our setup, both of the visible sector and the hidden sector co-exist on the infrared (IR) brane. We introduce the Polonyi model as a simple hidden sector. Due to the warped metric, the effective cutoff scale on the IR brane is ``warped down'', so that the gravity mediation occurs at a low scale. As a result, the gravitino is naturally the lightest superpartner (LSP) and contact interactions between the hidden and the visible sector fields become stronger. We addres…
We review the status of several phenomenological topics of current interest in neutrino oscillations: (i) Solar neutrino oscillations after the first Sudbury Neutrino Observatory measurements, including both model-independent and model-dependent results; (ii) Dominant nu_mu-->nu_tau oscillations of atmospheric and K2K neutrinos, and possible subdominant oscillations induced by either extra states or extra interactions; and (iii) Four-neutrino scenarios embedding the controversial LSND evidence for oscillations.
We present a comprehensive description of the Higgs-boson couplings to Standard Model fermions and bosons in Randall-Sundrum (RS) models with a Higgs sector localized on or near the infra-red brane. The analytic results for all relevant Higgs couplings including the loop-induced couplings to gluons and photons are summarized for both the minimal and the custodial RS model. The RS predictions for all relevant Higgs decays are compared with current LHC data, which already exclude significant portions of the parameter space. We show that the latest measurements are sensitive to KK gluon masses up…
We consider the possibility of extra spinning particles during inflation, focussing on the spin-2 case. Our analysis relies on the well-known fully non-linear formulation of interacting spin-2 theories. We explore the parameter space of the corresponding inflationary Lagrangian and identify regions therein exhibiting signatures within reach of upcoming CMB probes. We provide a thorough study of the early and late-time dynamics ensuring that stability conditions are met throughout the cosmic evolution. We characterise in particular the gravitational wave spectrum and three-point function findin…
If the fundamental scale of gravity is of the order of 1 TeV, black holes might be produced at the Large Hadron Collider. This work presents simulations of black holes and other exotic models of physics beyond the Standard Model - supersymmetry, extra dimensional models and string theory. Isolated leptons with high transverse momenta can be used to distinguish black holes from supersymmetry and models of extra dimensions. Z0 bosons and photons with high transverse momenta allow the discrimination of black holes and string resonances. The analysis of visible and missing energy/momenta and event…
Smallness of neutrino masses can be explained by introducing a tiny vacuum expectation value of an extra-Higgs doublet which couples to right-handed neutrinos ($N_R$). This situation is naturally realized in $ν$-Two Higgs Doublet Model ($ν$THDM), where a TeV-scale seesaw mechanism can work well. We investigate observable phenomenology of $ν$THDM at LHC and ILC experiments. Charged Higgs boson ($H^\pm$) in $ν$THDM is almost originated from the extra-Higgs doublet and its coupling strength to neutrinos are not small. Then this model induces rich phenomenology at the LHC, for example, when $m_{H^…
The reach of collider energies in heavy-ion collisions has profoundly changed our understanding of QCD under extreme conditions. I review some these new developments and comment on the properties of the produced medium as extracted from experimental data, as well as the exciting new opportunities which will be open at the LHC.
We make a comprehensive study of the theory and phenomenology of a low energy supersymmetric standard model originating from a string-inspired $E_6$ grand unified gauge group. The Exceptional Supersymmetric Standard Model (ESSM) considered here is based on the low energy SM gauge group together with an extra $Z'$ corresponding to an extra $U(1)_{N}$ gauge symmetry under which right--handed neutrinos have zero charge. The low energy matter content of the ESSM corresponds to three 27 representations of the $E_6$ symmetry group, to ensure anomaly cancellation, plus an additional pair of Higgs--li…
We study a warped extra-dimension scenario where the Standard Model fields lie in the bulk, with the addition of a fourth family of fermions. We concentrate on the flavor structure of the Higgs couplings with fermions in the flavor anarchy ansatz. Even without a fourth family, these couplings will be generically misaligned with respect to the SM fermion mass matrices. The presence of the fourth family typically enhances the misalignment effects and we show that one should expect them to be highly non-symmetrical in the ${(34)}$ inter-generational mixing. The radiative corrections from the new …
In this work some aspects of models with universal extra dimensions are studied. In particular, in the case of models with one universal extra dimension their phenomenology is investigated and used to extract bounds on the size of the extra dimension. In addition, the phenomenology of their latticized counterparts is also investigated. The running of the gauge coupling constants in models with an arbitrary number of universal extra dimensions is revisited. The possible reliable determination of the power corrections that appear is studied. Finally, a model with one non-universal extra dimensio…
The twin Higgs mechanism has recently been proposed to solve the little hierarchy problem. We study the implementation of the twin Higgs mechanism in left-right models. At TeV scale, heavy quark and gauge bosons appear, with rich collider phenomenology. In addition, there are extra Higgses, some of which couple to both the Standard Model fermion sector and the gauge sector, while others couple to the gauge bosons only. We present the particle spectrum, and study the general features of the collider phenomenology of this class of model at the Large Hadron Collider.
We discuss the renormalization and factorization scale dependence of charm and bottom production both at fixed-target energies and at present and future colliders. We investigate whether distributions calculable at leading order can be extrapolated to next-to-leading order by a constant multiplicative factor.
We consider collider signatures of the exceptional supersymmetric (SUSY) standard model (E6SSM). This E6 inspired SUSY model is based on the SM gauge group together with an extra U(1) gauge symmetry under which right--handed neutrinos have zero charge. To ensure anomaly cancellation and gauge coupling unification the low energy matter content of the E6SSM involve extra exotic matter beyond the MSSM. We discuss the collider signatures associated with the production of new particles predicted by the E6SSM and consider the implications of this model for dark matter and Higgs phenomenology. Since …
We present some phenomenology of the Higgs sector of the Minimal $B-L$ U(1) Extension of the Standard Model at the Large Hadron Collider. In this model, the existence of an extra gauge boson ($Z'$) and an extra scalar (heavy Higgs) are predicted as naturally related with the breaking of the $B-L$ (baryon minus lepton number) symmetry. For this, we have started by deriving the unitarity bounds in the high energy limit for the Minimal $B-L$ Model parameter space. This was accomplished by analysing the full class of Higgs and would-be Goldstone boson two-to-two scatterings at tree level (exploiti…
We study the effect of bulk fermions on electroweak precision observables in a recently proposed model with warped extra dimensions and no custodial symmetry. We find that the top-quark mass, together with the corrections to the Zbb vertex and the one-loop contribution to the T parameter, which is finite, impose important constraints that single out a well defined region of parameter space. New massive vector bosons can be as light as 1.5 TeV and have large couplings to the t_R quark, and suppressed couplings to the t_L, b_L and lighter quarks. We discuss the implications for searches of model…
Warped Extra Dimension scenarios are a rich playground for phenomenology of heavy resonances at LHC. The Radion and the KK-graviton are inevitable signatures of this class of models. On face of the latest LHC experimental results on the direct searches for Beyond Standard Model physics we update the phenomenological predictions for production and decay of such resonances in its main production modes. We also highlight the phenomenology results relevant to collider searches in individual channels, and provide tools for interpretation of current and future experimental analyses using two specifi…
We compute the couplings of the zero modes and first excited states of gluons, $W$'s, $Z$ gauge bosons, as well as the Higgs, to the zero modes and first excited states of the third generation quarks, in an RS Gauge-Higgs unification scenario based on a bulk $SO(5)\times U(1)_X$ gauge symmetry, with gauge and fermion fields propagating in the bulk. Using the parameter space consistent with electroweak precision tests and radiative electroweak symmetry breaking, we study numerically the dependence of these couplings on the parameters of our model. Furthermore, after emphasizing the presence of …
We study the 2010 specific version of the 2002 proposed $U(1)_X$ extension of the supersymmetric standard model, which has no $μ$ term and conserves baryon number and lepton number separately and automatically. We consider in detail the scalar sector as well as the extra $Z_X$ gauge boson, and their interactions with the necessary extra color-triplet particles of this model, which behave as leptoquarks. We show how the diphoton excess at 750 GeV, recently observed at the LHC, may be explained within this context. We identify a new fermion dark-matter candidate and discuss its properties. An im…
We review the possibility that the Supersymmetric Standard Model arises from orbifold constructions of the E_8 x E_8 Heterotic Superstring, and the phenomenological properties that such a model should have. In particular, trying to solve the discrepancy between the unification scale predicted by the Heterotic Superstring (g_{GUT}x5.27x10^{17} GeV) and the value deduced from LEP experiments (2x10^{16} GeV), we will predict the presence at low energies of three families of Higgses and vector-like colour triplets. Our approach relies on the Fayet-Iliopoulos breaking, and this is also a crucial in…
Small realistic Majorana neutrino masses can be generated via a Higgs triplet $(ξ^{++}, ξ^+, ξ^0)$ without having energy scales larger than $M_*={\cal O}(1)$ TeV in the theory. The large effective mass scale $Λ$ in the well-known seesaw neutrino-mass operator $Λ^{-1} (LLΦΦ)$ is naturally obtained with $Λ\sim M_*^2/μ,$ where $μ$ is a {\it small} scale of lepton-number violation. In theories with large extra dimensions, the smallness of $μ$ is naturally obtained by the mechanism of ``shining'' if the number of extra dimensions $n\ge 3.$ We study here the Higgs phenomenology of this model, where …
The Standard Model of Fundamental Interactions (SM) represents one of the most precise theories in physics. Among the predictions of the SM we find, for instance, the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron $a_e = 0.001159652181643(764)$. This prediction agrees with the experimental results to more than ten significant digits, the most accurate prediction in the history of physics. However, nowadays we have several evidences that the SM only explains $5 \%$ of the matter content of the Universe. The other $95 \%$ are composed by the so-called Dark Energy and Dark Matter. As their names sugge…
We explore the theoretical feasibility of extracting V_ub from two ratios built from B meson inclusive partial decays, R_1 = Gamma(b-> u cbar s)/3Gamma(b -> c l nu), and R_2 = [Gamma(b -> c X) - Gamma(b -> cbar X)]/Gamma(b -> c ubar d). We discuss contributions to these quantities from perturbative and nonperturbative physics, and show that they can be computed with overall uncertainties at the level of 10%.
We examine the extraction of moments of parton distributions from lattice data, focusing in particular on the chiral extrapolation as a function of the quark mass. Inclusion of the correct chiral behavior of the spin-averaged isovector distribution resolves a long-standing discrepancy between the lattice moments and experiment. We extract the x-dependence of the valence u-d distribution from the lowest few lattice moments, and discuss the implications for the quark mass dependence of meson masses lying on the rho Regge trajectory. The role of chiral symmetry in spin-dependent distributions, an…
We study the superradiant instability in scalar-tensor theories of gravitation, where matter outside a black hole provides an effective mass to the scalar degree of freedom of the gravitational sector. We discuss this effect for arbitrarily spinning black holes and for realistic models of truncated thin and thick accretion disks (where the perturbation equations are nonseparable), paying particular attention to the role of hot coronal flows in the vicinity of the black hole. The system qualitatively resembles the phenomenology of plasma-driven superradiant instabilities in General Relativity. …
We discuss the impact of the determination of the nucleon tensor charge on searches for physics Beyond the Standard Model. We also comment on the future extraction of the subleading-twist PDF $e(x)$ from Jefferson Lab soon-to-be-released Beam Spin Asymmetry data as well as from the expected data of CLAS12, as the latter is related to the scalar charge. These analyses are possible through the phenomenology of Dihadron Fragmentation Functions related processes, which we report on here as well.
We study in a model independent way models of new Physics featuring extra quarks (XQs). These XQs are predicted by extensions of the Standard Model (SM) but have never been observed yet even though many searches have been designed to find them at the LHC. After an introduction about the SM and the LHC, we present the main properties of these XQs and a model independent parametrisation that can be used to describe their phenomenology with generic hypotheses about their mixing with SM quarks, both in the case of XQ coupling with SM bosons and with Dark Matter (DM) candidates. In these cases we s…
We explicitly show that split-universal extra dimension (split-UED), a recently suggested extension of universal extra dimension (UED) model, can nicely explain recent anomalies in cosmic-ray positrons and electrons observed by PAMELA and ATIC/PPB-BETS. Kaluza-Klein (KK) dark matters mainly annihilate into leptons because the hadronic branching fraction is highly suppressed by large KK quark masses and the antiproton flux agrees very well with the observation where no excess is found . The flux of cosmic gamma-rays from pion decay is also highly suppressed and hardly detected in low energy reg…
