Despite the recent successes in computer vision, there remain new avenues to explore. In this work, we propose a new dataset to investigate the effect of self-occlusion on deep neural networks. With TEOS (The Effect of Self-Occlusion), we propose a 3D blocks world dataset that focuses on the geometric shape of 3D objects and their omnipresent challenge of self-occlusion. We designed TEOS to investigate the role of self-occlusion in the context of object classification. Even though remarkable progress has been seen in object classification, self-occlusion is a challenge. In the real-world, self-occlusion of 3D objects still presents significant challenges for deep learning approaches. However, humans deal with this by deploying complex strategies, for instance, by changing the viewpoint or manipulating the scene to gather necessary information. With TEOS, we present a dataset of two difficulty levels (L1 and L2 ), containing 36 and 12 objects, respectively. We provide 738 uniformly sampled views of each object, their mask, object and camera position, orientation, amount of self-occlusion, as well as the CAD model of each object. We present baseline evaluations with five well-known classification deep neural networks and show that TEOS poses a significant challenge for all of them. The dataset, as well as the pre-trained models, are made publicly available for the scientific community under https://nvision2.data.eecs.yorku.ca/TEOS.

Although there has been significant progress in the past decade, tracking is still a very challenging computer vision task, due to problems such as occlusion and model drift.Recently, the increased popularity of depth sensors e.g. Microsoft Kinect has made it easy to obtain depth data at low cost. This may be a game changer for tracking, since depth information can be used to prevent model drift and handle occlusion. In this paper, we construct a benchmark dataset of 100 RGBD videos with high diversity, including deformable objects, various occlusion conditions and moving cameras. We propose a ve…
Human gait is one of important biometric characteristics for human identification at a distance. In practice, occlusion usually occurs and seriously affects accuracy of gait recognition. However, there is no available database to support in-depth research of this problem, and state-of-arts gait recognition methods have not paid enough attention to it, thus this paper focuses on gait recognition under occlusion. We collect a new gait recognition database called OG RGB+D database, which breaks through the limitation of other gait databases and includes multimodal gait data of various occlusions …

In the last few years, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have demonstrated increasing success at learning many computer vision tasks including dense estimation problems such as optical flow and stereo matching. However, the joint prediction of these tasks, called scene flow, has traditionally been tackled using slow classical methods based on primitive assumptions which fail to generalize. The work presented in this paper overcomes these drawbacks efficiently (in terms of speed and accuracy) by proposing PWOC-3D, a compact CNN architecture to predict scene flow from stereo image sequences i…

Humans perceive and construct the surrounding world as an arrangement of simple parametric models. In particular, man-made environments commonly consist of volumetric primitives such as cuboids or cylinders. Inferring these primitives is an important step to attain high-level, abstract scene descriptions. Previous approaches directly estimate shape parameters from a 2D or 3D input, and are only able to reproduce simple objects, yet unable to accurately parse more complex 3D scenes. In contrast, we propose a robust estimator for primitive fitting, which can meaningfully abstract real-world envi…

We present an approach for real-time, robust and accurate hand pose estimation from moving egocentric RGB-D cameras in cluttered real environments. Existing methods typically fail for hand-object interactions in cluttered scenes imaged from egocentric viewpoints, common for virtual or augmented reality applications. Our approach uses two subsequently applied Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to localize the hand and regress 3D joint locations. Hand localization is achieved by using a CNN to estimate the 2D position of the hand center in the input, even in the presence of clutter and occlusi…

We present a method that can recognize new objects and estimate their 3D pose in RGB images even under partial occlusions. Our method requires neither a training phase on these objects nor real images depicting them, only their CAD models. It relies on a small set of training objects to learn local object representations, which allow us to locally match the input image to a set of "templates", rendered images of the CAD models for the new objects. In contrast with the state-of-the-art methods, the new objects on which our method is applied can be very different from the training objects. As a …
Tracking pixels in videos is typically studied as an optical flow estimation problem, where every pixel is described with a displacement vector that locates it in the next frame. Even though wider temporal context is freely available, prior efforts to take this into account have yielded only small gains over 2-frame methods. In this paper, we revisit Sand and Teller's "particle video" approach, and study pixel tracking as a long-range motion estimation problem, where every pixel is described with a trajectory that locates it in multiple future frames. We re-build this classic approach using co…

Recovering the occlusion relationships between objects is a fundamental human visual ability which yields important information about the 3D world. In this paper we propose a deep network architecture, called DOC, which acts on a single image, detects object boundaries and estimates the border ownership (i.e. which side of the boundary is foreground and which is background). We represent occlusion relations by a binary edge map, to indicate the object boundary, and an occlusion orientation variable which is tangential to the boundary and whose direction specifies border ownership by a left-han…
Despite deep convolutional neural networks' great success in object classification, it suffers from severe generalization performance drop under occlusion due to the inconsistency between training and testing data. Because of the large variance of occluders, our goal is a model trained on occlusion-free data while generalizable to occlusion conditions. In this work, we integrate prototypes, partial matching and top-down attention regulation into deep neural networks to realize robust object classification under occlusion. We first introduce prototype learning as its regularization encourages c…
Detecting the occlusion from stereo images or video frames is important to many computer vision applications. Previous efforts focus on bundling it with the computation of disparity or optical flow, leading to a chicken-and-egg problem. In this paper, we leverage convolutional neural network to liberate the occlusion detection task from the interleaved, traditional calculation framework. We propose a Symmetric Network (SymmNet) to directly exploit information from an image pair, without estimating disparity or motion in advance. The proposed network is structurally left-right symmetric to lear…

Gait as a biometric property for person identification plays a key role in video surveillance and security applications. In gait recognition, normally, gait feature such as Gait Energy Image (GEI) is extracted from one full gait cycle. However in many circumstances, such a full gait cycle might not be available due to occlusion. Thus, the GEI is not complete giving rise to a degrading in gait-based person identification rate. In this paper, we address this issue by proposing a novel method to identify individuals from gait feature when a few (or even single) frame(s) is available. To do so, we…

In this paper, we introduce the active weighted mapping method which infers proper weight values based on the characteristic of input data on the fly. The weight val…

Addressing these problems, we introduce a spatio-temporal network for robust 3D human pose estimation. As…
