Conformal Field Theories (CFTs) have rich dynamics in heavy states. We describe the constraints due to spontaneously broken boost and dilatation symmetries in such states. The spontaneously broken boost symmetries require the existence of new low-lying primaries whose scaling dimension gap, we argue, scales as $O(1)$. We demonstrate these ideas in various states, including fluid, superfluid, mean field theory, and Fermi surface states. We end with some remarks about the large charge limit in 2d and discuss a theory of a single compact boson with an arbitrary conformal anomaly.
We present a large class of holographic models where the boundary ${\mathbb R}^{2,1}$ dimensional conformal field theory has a thermal phase with a spontaneously broken global symmetry. The dual black branes in a Poincare patch of asymptotically $AdS_4$ violate the no-hair theorem.
The spontaneous breaking of boost invariance is ubiquitous in nature, yet the associated Goldstone bosons are nowhere to be seen. We discuss why some subtleties are to be expected in the Goldstone phenomenon for spontaneously broken boosts, and derive the corresponding quantum mechanical, non-perturbative Goldstone theorem. Despite similarities with more standard Goldstone theorems, we show by examples that ours can be obeyed by quite unusual spectra of low-energy excitations. In particular, for non-relativistic Fermi liquids, we prove that it is obeyed by the particle-hole continuum. To the b…
We derive positivity bounds on EFT coefficients in theories where boosts are spontaneously broken. We employ the analytic properties of the retarded Green's function of conserved currents (or of the stress-energy tensor) and assume the theory becomes conformal in the UV. The method is general and applicable to both cosmology and condensed matter systems. As a concrete example, we look at the EFT of conformal superfluids which describes the universal low-energy dynamics of CFT's at large chemical potential and we derive inequalities on the coefficients of the operators, in three dimensions, at …
We describe the physics of fermionic Lifschitz theories once the anisotropicscaling exponent is made arbitrarily small. In this limit the system acquires an enhanced(Carrollian) boost symmetry. We show, both through the explicit computation of the pathintegral Jacobian and through the solution of the Wess-Zumino consistency conditions, thatthe translation symmetry in the anisotropic direction becomes anomalous. This turns outto be a mixed anomaly between boosts and translations. In a Newton-Cartan formulationof the space-time geometry such anomaly is sourced by torsion. We use these results to…
We derive soft theorems for theories in which time symmetries -- symmetries that involve the transformation of time, an example of which are Lorentz boosts -- are spontaneously broken. The soft theorems involve unequal-time correlation functions with the insertion of a soft Goldstone in the far past. Explicit checks are provided for several examples, including the effective theory of a relativistic superfluid and the effective field theory of inflation. We discuss how in certain cases these unequal-time identities capture information at the level of observables that cannot be seen purely in te…
In this Colloquium, we review recent progress in the effective description of strongly-correlated phases of matter with spontaneously broken translations, such as charge density waves or Wigner crystals. In real materials, disorder is inevitable and pins the Goldstones of broken translations. We describe how pinning can be incorporated in the effective field theory at low energies, without making any assumption on the presence of boost symmetry. We review the essential role played by gauge-gravity duality models in establishing these effective field theories with only approximate symmetries. W…
In contrast to massless spinning particles, scalars are not heavily constrained by unitarity and locality. Off-shell, no gauge symmetries are required to write down manifestly local theories, while on-shell consistent factorisation is trivial. Instead a useful classification scheme for scalars is based on the symmetries they can non-linearly realise. Motivated by the breaking of Lorentz boosts in cosmology, in this paper we classify the possible symmetries of a shift-symmetric scalar that is assumed to non-linearly realise Lorentz boosts as, for example, in the EFT of inflation. Our classifica…
We study a paradigmatic model in field theory where a global $U(1)$ and scale symmetries are jointly and spontaneously broken. At zero density the model has a non-compact flat direction, which at finite density needs to be slightly lifted. The resulting low-energy spectrum is composed by a standard gapless $U(1)$ Nambu-Goldstone mode and a light dilaton whose gap is determined by the chemical potential and corrected by the couplings. Even though $U(1)$ and scale symmetries commute, there is a mixing between the $U(1)$ Nambu-Goldstone and the dilaton that is crucial to recover the expected dyna…
