We study multielectron bubble phases in the $N=2$ and $N=3$ Landau levels in a high mobility GaAs/AlGaAs sample. We found that the longitudinal magnetoresistance versus temperature curves in the multielectron bubble region exhibit sharp peaks, irrespective of the Landau level index. We associate these peaks with an enhanced scattering caused by thermally fluctuating domains of a bubble phase and a uniform uncorrelated electron liquid at the onset of the bubble phases. Within the $N=3$ Landau level, onset temperatures of three-electron and two-electron bubbles exhibit linear trends with respect to the filling factor; the onset temperatures of three-electron bubbles are systematically higher than those of two-electron bubbles. Furthermore, onset temperatures of the two-electron bubble phases across $N=2$ and $N=3$ Landau levels are similar, but exhibit an offset. This offset and the dominant nature of the three-electron bubbles in the $N=3$ Landau level reveals the role of the short-range part of the electron-electron interaction in the formation of the bubbles.
An equilibrium multielectron bubble in liquid helium is a fascinating object with a spherical two-dimensional electron gas on its surface. We describe two ways of creating them. MEBs have been observed in the dome of a cylindrical cell with an unexpectedly short lifetime; we show analytically why these MEBs can discharge by tunneling. Using a novel method, MEBs have been extracted from a vapor sheath around a hot filament in superfluid helium by applying electric fields up to 15 kV/cm, and photographed with high-speed video. Charges as high as 1.6x10-9 C (~1010 electrons) have been measured. T…
A longstanding puzzle for the lowest Landau level crystal phase has been an order of magnitude discrepancy between the theoretically calculated energy of the defects and the measured activation gap. We perform an extensive study of various kinds of defects in the correlated composite fermion crystal and find that the lowest energy defect is a six-fold symmetric "hyper-correlated bubble interstitial," in which an interstitial particle forms a strongly correlated bound state with a particle of the crystal. The energy of the bubble defect is a factor of $\sim$3 smaller than that of the lowest ene…
Reports of weak local minima in the magnetoresistance at $ν=2+3/5$, $2+3/7$, $2+4/9$, $2+5/9$, $2+5/7$, and $2+5/8$ in the second Landau level of the electron gas in GaAs/AlGaAs left open the possibility of fractional quantum Hall states at these filling factors. In a high quality sample we found that the magnetoresistance exhibits peculiar features near these filling factors of interest. These features, however, cannot be associated with fractional quantum Hall states; instead they originate from magnetoresistive fingerprints of the electronic bubble phases. We found only two exceptions: at $…
Stripe-like and bubble-like patterns spontaneously form in numerous physical, chemical, and biological systems when competing long-range and short-range interactions banish uniformity. Stripe-like and the related nematic morphology are also under intense scrutiny in various strongly correlated electron systems. In contrast, the electronic bubble morphology is rare. Some of the most intriguing electron bubbles develop in the two-dimensional electron gas subjected to a perpendicular magnetic field. However, in contrast to bubbles forming in classical systems such as the Turing activator-inhibito…
We report drastically different onset temperatures of the reentrant integer quantum Hall states in the second and third Landau level. This finding is in quantitative disagreement with the Hartree-Fock theory of the bubble phases which is thought to describe these reentrant states. Our results indicate that the number of electrons per bubble in either the second or the third Landau level is likely different than predicted.
In recent experiments, external anisotropy has been a useful tool to tune different phases and study their competitions. In this paper, we look at the quantum Hall charge density wave states in the $N=2$ Landau level. Without anisotropy, there are two first-order phase transitions between the Wigner crystal, the $2$-electron bubble phase, and the stripe phase. By adding mass anisotropy, our analytical and numerical studies show that the $2$-electron bubble phase disappears and the stripe phase significantly enlarges its domain in the phase diagram. Meanwhile, a regime of stripe crystals that m…
Metastability is a quintessential feature of first order quantum phase transitions, which is lost either by dynamical instability or by nucleating bubbles of a true vacuum through quantum tunneling. By considering a drive across the first order quantum phase transition in the quantum Ising chain in the presence of both transverse and longitudinal fields, we reveal multiple regions in the parameter space where the initial metastable state loses its metastability in successive stages. The mechanism responsible is found to be semi-degenerate resonant tunnelings to states with specific bubble size…
We investigate fractional quantum Hall states for model interactions restricted to a repulsive hard-core. When the hard-core excludes relative angular momentum $m=1$ between spinless electrons the ground state at Landau level filling factor $ν=1/3$ is known to be exactly given by the Laughlin wavefunction. When we exclude relative angular momentum three only, Wòjs, Quinn and Yi have suggested the appearance of a liquid state with non-Laughlin correlations. We study this special hard-core interaction at filling factor 1/3 on the sphere, torus and cylinder geometry. An analysis of the charged an…
We report complex magnetotransport patterns of the $ν=1$ integer quantum Hall state in a GaAs/AlGaAs sample from the newest generation with a record high electron mobility. The reentrant integer quantum Hall effect in the flanks of the $ν=1$ plateau indicates the formation of the integer quantum Hall Wigner solid, a collective insulator. Moreover, at a fixed filling factor, the longitudinal resistance versus temperature in the region of the integer quantum Hall Wigner solid exhibits a sharp peak. Such sharp peaks in the longitudinal resistance versus temperature so far were only detected for b…
We discuss the form of the damping of magnetic excitations in a metal near a ferromagnetic instability. The paramagnon theory predicts that the damping term should have the form $Ω/Γ(q)$ with $Γ(q) \propto q$ (the Landau damping). However, the experiments on uranium metallic compounds UGe$_2$ and UCoGe showed that $Γ(q)$ tends to a constant value at vanishing $q$. A non-zero $Γ(0)$ is impossible in systems with one type of carriers (either localized or itinerant) because it would violate the spin conservation. It has been conjectured recently that a non-zero $Γ(q)$ in UGe$_2$ and UCoGe may be …
We provide semi-rigorous arguments that the Homogeneous Electron Fluid (HEF) has a colloidal phase separating the Wigner Crystal from the high density fluid phase. Near the crossover between crystal and fluid ground state energies, the argument is quite general and valid for practically any quantum transition between a crystal and a more amorphous phase. In this regime, the colloid is a gel and its "Goldstone" modes are flows of irregular fluid droplets separated by crystalline walls. A metal insulator transition occurs when a single bubble of fluid spans the entire system. Beyond this transit…
