Let $N=2n^2-1$ or $N=n^2+n-1$, for any $n\ge 2$. Let $M=\frac{N-1}{2}$. We construct families of prime knots with Jones polynomials $(-1)^M\sum_{k=-M}^{M} (-1)^kt^k$. Such polynomials have Mahler measure equal to $1$. If $N$ is prime, these are cyclotomic polynomials $Φ_{2N}(t)$, up to some shift in the powers of $t$. Otherwise, they are products of such polynomials, including $Φ_{2N}(t)$. In particular, all roots of unity $ζ_{2N}$ occur as roots of Jones polynomials. We also show that some roots of unity cannot be zeros of Jones polynomials.
The "color" in the colored Jones polynomial is an integer parameter. In this paper, a periodic pattern of the values of the colored Jones polynomial at the second and the third roots of unity is found. If we substitute -1 to the colored Jones polynomial, the value is alternately 1 or the determinant of the given link. When it comes to substituting the primitive third root of unity, another periodic pattern appears.
We provide a new bound on the maximum degree of the Jones polynomial of a positive link with second Jones coefficient equal to $\pm 1$ or $\pm 2$. This builds upon the result of our previous work, in which we found such a bound for positive fibered links. We also show that each of these three bounds obstruct positivity for infinitely many almost-positive diagrams, allowing us to classify infinitely many knots as almost-positive.
There is a $p$-differential on the triply-graded Khovanov--Rozansky homology of knots and links over a field of positive characteristic $p$ that gives rise to an invariant in the homotopy category finite-dimensional $p$-complexes. A differential on triply-graded homology discovered by Cautis is compatible with the $p$-differential structure. As a consequence we get a categorification of the colored Jones polynomial evaluated at a $2p$th root of unity.
Let p an integer. We define a family of idempotents (and nilpotents) in the Temperley - Lieb algebras at 4p-th roots of unity which generalize the usual Jones-Wenzl idempotents. These new idempotents correspond to finite dimentional simple and projective indecomposable representations of the restricted quantum group Uqsl(2), where q is a 2p-th root of unity. In the manner of the [BHMV95] topological quantum field theorie (TQFT), they provide a canonical basis in colored skein modules to define mapping class groups representations. In the torus case, this basis allows us to obtain a partial mat…

We discuss two realizations of the colored Jones polynomials of a knot, one from an unnoticed work of the second author in 1994 on quantum R-matrices at roots of unity obtained from solutions of the pentagon identity, and another one from recent work of D. Zagier and the first author regarding the Refined Quantum Modularity Conjecture, more precisely, the mysterious top row of a matrix of conjectured knot invariants.
We present new obstructions for a knot K in S^3 to admit purely cosmetic surgeries, which arise from the study of Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants at fixed level. In particular, we strengthen a recent result of Hanselman, showing that if K has purely cosmetic surgeries then the slopes of the surgeries are of the form 1/5k except if the Jones polynomial of K evaluated at a 5-th root of unity is 1. For any odd prime r, we also give an obstruction for K to have a 1/k surgery slope with k coprime to r that involves the values of the first (r-3)/2 colored Jones polynomials of K at an r-th root …
In this paper we investigate the asymptotic behavior of the colored Jones polynomials and the Turaev-Viro invariants for the figure eight knot. More precisely, we consider the $M$-th colored Jones polynomials evaluated at $(N+1/2)$-th root of unity with a fixed limiting ratio, $s$, of $M$ and $(N+1/2)$. We find out the asymptotic expansion formula (AEF) of the colored Jones polynomials of the figure eight knot with $s$ close to $1$. Nonetheless, we show that the exponential growth rate of the colored Jones polynomials of the figure eight knot with $s$ close to $1/2$ is strictly less than those…
A sequence $f_n(q)$ is $q$-holonomic if it satisfies a nontrivial linear recurrence with coefficients polynomials in $q$ and $q^n$. Our main theorems state that $q$-holonomicity is preserved under twisting, i.e., replacing $q$ by $ωq$ where $ω$ is a complex root of unity, and under the substitution $q \to q^α$ where $α$ is a rational number. Our proofs are constructive, work in the multivariate setting of $\partial$-finite sequences and are implemented in the Mathematica package HolonomicFunctions. Our results are illustrated by twisting natural $q$-holonomic sequences which appear in quantum …
We obtain a family of skein identities in the Kauffman bracket skein module which relate Frobenius elements to Jones-Wenzl projectors at roots of unity. We view these skein identities as certain incarnations of Steinberg tensor product formulae from the theory of tilting modules of the quantum group $U_q(sl_2)$. We show that the simplest skein identities yield a short new proof of the existence of the Chebyshev-Frobenius homomorphism of Bonahon-Wong.
The optimistic limit is the mathematical formulation of the classical limit which is a physical method to expect the actual limit by using saddle point method of certain potential function. The original optimistic limit of the Kashaev invariant was formulated by Yokota, and a modified formulation was suggested by the author and others. The modified version was easier to handle and more combinatorial than the original one. On the other hand, it was known that the Kashaev invariant coincides with the evaluation of the colored Jones polynomial at the certain root of unity. The optimistic limit of…
By applying a variant of the TQFT constructed by Blanchet, Habegger, Masbaum, and Vogel, and using a construction of Ohtsuki, we define a module endomorphism for each knot K by using a tangle obtained from a surgery presentation of K. We show that it is strong shift equivalent to the Turaev-Viro endomorphism associated to K. Following Viro, we consider the endomorphisms that one obtains after coloring the meridian and longitude of the knot. We show that the traces of these endomorphisms encode the same information as the colored Jones polynomials of K at a root of unity. Most of the discussion…
There are infinitely many pretzel links with the same Alexander polynomial (actually with trivial Alexander polynomial). By contrast, in this note we revisit the Jones polynomial of pretzel links and prove that, given a natural number S, there is only a finite number of pretzel links whose Jones polynomials have span S. More concretely, we provide an algorithm useful for deciding whether or not a given knot is pretzel. As an application we identify all the pretzel knots up to nine crossings, proving in particular that $8_{12}$ is the first non-pretzel knot.
In this paper we prove that the family of colored Jones polynomials of a knot in $S^3$ determines the family of ADO polynomials of this knot. More precisely, we construct a two variables knot invariant unifying both the ADO and the colored Jones polynomials. On one hand, the first variable $q$ can be evaluated at $2r$ roots of unity with $r \in \Bbb N^*$ and we obtain the ADO polynomial over the Alexander polynomial. On the other hand, the second variable $A$ evaluated at $A=q^n$ gives the colored Jones polynomials. From this, we exhibit a map sending, for any knot, the family of colored Jones…
The Hennings invariant for the small quantum group associated to an arbitrary simple Lie algebra at a root of unity is shown to agree with Jones- Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariant arising from Chern-Simons filed theory for the same Lie algebra and the same root of unity on all integer homol- ogy three-spheres, at roots of unity where both are defined. This partially generalizes the work of Chen, et al. ([CYZ12, CKS09]) which relates the Hennings and Chern-Simons invariants for SL(2) and SO(3) for arbitrary rational homology three-spheres.
In this paper we prove a unified model for $U_q(sl(2))$ quantum invariants through intersections of embedded Lagrangians in configuration spaces. More specifically, we construct a {\em state sum of Lagrangian intersections in the configuration space in the punctured disc}, which is a polynomial in three variables. It {\em recovers the coloured Jones polynomial and the coloured Alexander polynomial} through specialisations of coefficients. This formula works for oriented links coloured with the same representation of the quantum group and can be evaluated at roots of unity. As a corollary, the …

We present a simple phenomenological formula which approximates the hyperbolic volume of a knot using only a single evaluation of its Jones polynomial at a root of unity. The average error is just $2.86$% on the first $1.7$ million knots, which represents a large improvement over previous formulas of this kind. To find the approximation formula, we use layer-wise relevance propagation to reverse engineer a black box neural network which achieves a similar average error for the same approximation task when trained on $10$% of the total dataset. The particular roots of unity which appear in our …
We propose a means by which some categorifications can be evaluated at a root of unity. This is implemented using a suitable localization in the context of prior work by the authors on categorification of the Jones-Wenzl projectors. Within this construction we define objects, invariant under handle slides, which decategorify to the SU(2) quantum invariants at low levels.
We consider arrow diagrams of links in $S^3$ and define $k$-moves on such diagrams, for any $k\in\mathbb N$. We study the equivalence classes of links in $S^3$ up to $k$-moves. For $k=2$, we show that any two knots are equivalent, whereas it is not true for links. We show that the Jones polynomial at a $k$-th primitive root of unity is unchanged by a $k$-move, when $k$ is odd. It is multiplied by $-1$, when $k$ is even. It follows that, for any $k\ge 5$, there are infinitely many classes of knots modulo $k$-moves. We use these results to study the Hopf crossing number. In particular, we show t…
For each finite dimensional, simple, complex Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$ and each root of unity $ξ$ (with some mild restriction on the order) one can define the Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev (WRT) quantum invariant $τ_M^{\mathfrak g}(ξ)\in \mathbb C$ of oriented 3-manifolds $M$. In the present paper we construct an invariant $J_M$ of integral homology spheres $M$ with values in the cyclotomic completion $\widehat {\mathbb Z [q]}$ of the polynomial ring $\mathbb Z [q]$, such that the evaluation of $J_M$ at each root of unity gives the WRT quantum invariant of $M$ at that root of unity. This result ge…
The physical 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ theory T[Y] was previously used to predict the existence of some 3-manifold invariants $\hat{Z}_{a}(q)$ that take the form of power series with integer coefficients, converging in the unit disk. Their radial limits at the roots of unity should recover the Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants. In this paper we discuss how, for complements of knots in $S^3$, the analogue of the invariants $\hat{Z}_{a}(q)$ should be a two-variable series $F_K(x,q)$ obtained by parametric resurgence from the asymptotic expansion of the colored Jones polynomial. The terms in this ser…
