We study a distinct type of non-Fermi liquid where there exists an infinite number of critical bosonic modes instead of a finite number of bosonic modes for the conventional ones. We consider itinerant magnets with both conduction electrons and fluctuating magnetic moments in three dimensions. With the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, the moments fluctuate near a boson surface in the reciprocal space at low energies when the system approaches an ordering transition. The infinite number of critical modes on the boson surface strongly scatter the gapless electrons on the Fermi surface and convert the metallic sector into a non-Fermi liquid. We explain the physical properties of this non-Fermi liquid. On the ordered side, a conventional non-Fermi liquid emerges due to the scattering by the gapless Goldstone mode from the spontaneous breaking of the global rotational symmetry. We discuss the general structure of the phase diagram in the vicinity of the quantum phase transition and clarify various crossover behaviors.
A bosonic model on a 3 dimensional fcc lattice with emergent low energy excitations, with the same polarization and gauge symmetries as gravitons is constructed. The novel phase obtained is a stable gapless boson liquid phase, with algebraic boson density correlations. The stability of this phase is protected against the instanton effect and superfluidity by self-duality and large gauge symmetries. The gapless collective excitation of this phase closely resembles gravitons, although they have a soft $ω\sim k^2$ dispersion relation. The dynamics of this novel phase is described by new set of Ma…
The linear equations for transverse spin dynamics in weakly polarised degenerate Fermi liquid with arbitrary relationship between temperature and polarization are derived from Landau-Silin phenomenological kinetic equation with general form of two-particle collision integral. The temperature and polarization dependence of the spin current relaxation time is established. It is found in particular that at finite polarization transverse spin wave damping has a finite value at T=0. The analogy between temperature dependences of spin waves attenuation and ultrasound absorption in degenerate Fermi l…
By a mix of form-factors and analyticity techniques, we determine some fundamental scattering amplitudes in non-Fermi liquid systems. These include the reflection and transmission amplitudes for Laughlin quasiparticles at a point contact between two g=1/2 Luttinger liquids, and the e->e_{edge} at a point contact between a Fermi liquid and a g=1/3 Luttinger liquid (all liquids chiral or not). These results are obtained in closed form, and give rise to rather simple expressions for the probabilities of the most basic processes of non Fermi liquid physics at these special values of the couplings.
We use scaling and renormalization-group techniques to analyze the leading nonanalyticities in a Fermi liquid. We show that a physically motivated scaling hypothesis reproduce the results known from perturbation theory for the density of states, the density-of-states fluctuations, the specific heat, the spin susceptibility, and the nematic magnetic susceptibility. We also discuss the absence of nonanalytic terms in the density susceptibility. We then use a recent effective field theory for clean electron systems to derive the scaling hypothesis by means of renormalization-group techniques. Thi…
The transport equation for transverse vibrations of magnetization in spin polarized Fermi liquid is derived from integral equation for the vertex function. The dispersion law for the transverse spin waves is established. The existance of zero-temperature spin-waves attenuation is confirmed. The problem of similar derivation in ferromagnetic "Fermi liquid" is discussed.
We study in this paper the general properties of a many body system of fermions in arbitrary dimensions assuming that the {\em momentum} of individual fermions are good quantum numbers of the system. We call these systems $k$-Fermi liquids. We show how Fermi liquid, Luttinger liquid (or Fermi liquid with exclusion statistics) and spin-charge separation arises from this framework. Two exactly solvable $k$-Fermi liquid models with spin-charge separation are discussed as examples.
Within bosonization theory we introduce in this paper a new definition of "quasi-particles" for interacting fermions at arbitrary space dimenions. In dimensions higher than one we show that the constructed quasi-particles are consistent with quasi-particle descriptions in Landau Fermi liquid theory whereas in one-dimension the quasi-particles" are non-perturbative objects (spinons and holons) obeying fractional statistics. The more general situation of Fermi liquids with singular Landau interaction is discussed.
In the present work we theoretically analyze the contribution from a transverse Fermi-liquid collective mode to the transmission of electromagnetic waves through a thin film of a clean metal in the presence of a strong external magnetic field. We show that at the appropriate Fermi surface geometry the transverse Fermi-liquid wave may appear in conduction electrons liquid at frequencies $ω$ significantly smaller than the cyclotron frequency of charge carriers $Ω$ provided that the mean collision frequency $τ^{-1}$ is smaller than $ω.$ Also, we show that in realistic metals size oscillations in …
The evolution between Fermi liquid and non-Fermi-liquid states in correlated electron systems has been a central subject in condensed matter physics because of the coupled intriguing magnetic and electronic states. An effective pathway to explore the nature of non-Fermi liquid behavior is to approach its phase boundary. Here we report a crossover from non-Fermi liquid to Fermi-liquid state in metallic CaRuO3 through ionic liquid gating induced protonation with electric field. This electronic transition subsequently triggers a reversible magnetic transition with the emergence of an exotic ferro…
The dispersion law of transverse spin waves known in the Stoner-Hubbard model of itinerant ferromagnetism corresponds to that is well known in more broder and well controlled approach of Fermi-liquid theory. Making use the quantum-field theoretical approach we derive the dispersion law for the transverse spin waves in a weakly polarized Fermi liquid at T=0. Along with the dissipationless part inversely proportional to the polarization it contains also the finite zero-temperature damping. It is shown that similar derivation for "ferromagnetic Fermi liquid" taking into consideration the divergen…
We use high dimensional bosonization to derive an effective field theory that describes the Pomeranchuck transition in two-dimensional Fermi liquids. The bosonization approach explicitly retains all low-energy degrees of freedom of the system. The resultant theory has dynamical exponent z=2 at tree level and upper critical dimension d_c=2, thus in 2D the system is at the upper critical dimension. These results differ from those of an earlier study based on integrating out fermions.
It is well-known that, generically, the one-dimensional interacting fermions cannot be described in terms of the Fermi liquid. Instead, they present different phenomenology, that of the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid: the Landau quasiparticles are ill-defined, and the fermion occupation number is continuous at the Fermi energy. We demonstrate that suitable fine-tuning of the interaction between fermions can stabilize a peculiar state of one-dimensional matter, which is dissimilar to both the Tomonaga-Luttinger and Fermi liquids. We propose to call this state a quasi-Fermi liquid. Technically speaki…
It is shown how Luttinger liquids may be studied using sea-bosons. The main advantage of the sea-boson method is its ability to provide information about short-wavelength physics in addition to the asymptotics and is naturally generalisable to more than one dimension. In this article, we solve the Luttinger model and the Calogero-Sutherland model, the latter in the weak-coupling limit. The anomalous exponent we obtain in the former case is identical to the one obtained by Mattis and Lieb. We also apply this method to solve the two-dimensional analog of the Luttinger model and show that the sys…
There is a growing interest in the $U(1)$ Coulomb liquid in both quantum materials in pyrochlore ice and cluster Mott insulators and cold atom systems. We explore a paired hardcore boson model on a pyrochlore lattice. This model is equivalent to the XYZ spin model that was proposed for rare-earth pyrochlores with "dipole-octupole" doublets. Since this model has no sign problem for quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations in a large parameter regime, we carry out both analytical and QMC calculations. We find that the $U(1)$ Coulomb liquid is quite stable and spans a rather large portion of the pha…
The exact Green's functions of a finite-size Luttinger Liquid (LL) connected to impedances are computed at zero and finite temperature. Bosonization for a LL with Impedance boundary conditions (IBC) is proven to hold. The LL with open boundary conditions (for both Neumann and Dirichlet cases) is explicitly recovered as a special limit when one has infinite impedances. Additionally when the impedances are equal to the characteristic impedance of the Luttinger liquid then the finite Luttinger liquid is shown to be effectively equivalent to an infinite Luttinger liquid.
The modern multi-polaron theory predicts a polaronic Fermi-liquid state, but such a state has not been unambigously confirmed by experiment so far. Here we report theoretical and experimental studies of the isotope effects on the low temperature kinetic properties of the doped ferromagnetic manganites. Our results provide clear evidence for a novel polaronic Fermi-liquid state in doped oxides.
We explore the physics of novel fermion liquids emerging from conducting networks, where 1D metallic wires form a periodic 2D superstructure. Such structure naturally appears in marginally-twisted bilayer graphenes, moire transition metal dichalcogenides, and also in some charge-density wave materials. For these network systems, we theoretically show that a remarkably wide variety of new non-Fermi liquids emerge and that these non-Fermi liquids can be classified by the characteristics of the junctions in networks. Using this, we calculate the electric conductivity of the non-Fermi liquids as a…
Fermi liquid theory works very well in most normal metals, but is found violated in many strongly correlated electron systems, such as cuprate and heavy-fermion superconductors. A widely accepted criterion is that, the Fermi liquid theory is valid when the interaction-induced fermion damping rate approaches zero more rapidly than the energy. Otherwise, it is invalid. Here, we demonstrate that this criterion breaks down in topological double-and triple-Weyl semimetals. Renormalization group analysis reveals that, although the damping rate of double- and triple-Weyl fermions induced by the Coulo…
We study possible spin liquids on square lattice that respect all lattice symmetries and time-reversal symmetry within the framework of Schwinger boson (mean-field) theory. Such spin liquids have spin gap and emergent Z_2 gauge field excitations. We classify them by the projective symmetry group method, and find six spin liquid states that are potentially relevant to the J_1-J_2 Heisenberg model. The properties of these states are studied under mean-field approximation. Interestingly we find a spin liquid state that can go through continuous phase transitions to either the Néel magnetic order …
We propose in this paper an effective low-energy theory for interacting fermion systems which supports exclusion statistics. The theory can be viewed as an extension of Landau Fermi liquid theory where besides quasi-particle energy $ξ_{\mathbf{k}}$, the kinetic momentum $\mathbf{k}$ of quasi-particles depends also on quasi-particle occupation numbers as a result of momentum ($k$)-dependent current-current interaction. The dependence of kinetic momentum on quasi-particles excitations leads to change in density of states and exclusion statistics. The properties of this new Fermi liquid state is …
We develop a theory for a generic instability of a Fermi liquid in dimension d>1 against the formation of a Luttinger-liquid-like state. The density of states at the Fermi level is the order parameter for the ensuing quantum phase transition, which is driven by the effective interaction strength. A scaling theory in conjunction with an effective field theoy for clean electrons is used to obtain the critical behavior of observables. In the Fermi-liquid phase the order-parameter susceptibility, which is measurable by tunneling, is predicted to diverge for 1<d<3.
We extend and apply a recent theory of the dynamical spin response of Anderson lattice systems to interpret ESR data on YbRh2Si2. Starting within a semiphenomenological Fermi liquid description at low temperatures T < Tx (a crossover temperature) and low magnetic fields B << Bx, we extend the description to the non-Fermi liquid regime by adopting a quasiparticle picture with effective mass and spin susceptibility varying logarithmically with energy/temperature, as observed in experiment. We find a sharp ESR resonance line slightly shifted from the local f-level resonance and broadened by quasi…
We introduce a particle-hole-symmetric metallic state of bosons in a magnetic field at odd-integer filling. This state hosts composite fermions whose energy dispersion features a quadratic band touching and corresponding $2π$ Berry flux protected by particle-hole and discrete rotation symmetries. We also construct an alternative particle-hole symmetric state---distinct in the presence of inversion symmetry---without Berry flux. As in the Dirac composite Fermi liquid introduced by Son, breaking particle-hole symmetry recovers the familiar Chern-Simons theory. We discuss realizations of this pha…
We show that thermodynamics is insufficient to probe the nature of the low energy dynamics of quantum impurity models and a more subtle analysis based on scattering theory is required. Traditionally, quantum impurity models are classified into one of two categories: Fermi liquids and non-Fermi liquids, depending on the analytic properties of the various thermodynamic quntities. We show, however, that even when a quantum impurity model is a Fermi liquid (an incoming electron at the Fermi level scatters elastically off the impurity), one may find singular thermodynamic behavior if characteristic…
We show that the one-dimensional (1D) electron systems can also be described by Landau's phenomenological Fermi-liquid theory. Most of the known results derived from the Luttinger-liquid theory can be retrieved from the 1D Fermi-liquid theory. Exact correspondence between the Landau parameters and Haldane parameters is established. The exponents of the dynamical correlation functions and the impurity problem are also discussed based on the finite size corrections of elementary excitations with the predictions of the conformal field theory, which provides a bridge between the 1D Fermi-liquid an…
We study the longitudinal sound propagation in the electronic nematic Fermi liquid where the Fermi surface is distorted due to the spontaneously broken rotational symmetry. The behavior of the sound wave in the nematic ordered state is dramatically different from that in the isotropic Fermi liquid. The collective modes associated with the fluctuations of the Fermi surface distortion in the nematic Fermi liquid leads to the strong and anisotropic damping of the sound wave. The relevance of the nematic Fermi liquid in doped Mott insulator is discussed.
In these lecture notes, the basic physics of Fermi liquids and Luttinger liquids is presented. Fermi liquids are discussed both from a phenomenological viewpoint, in relation to microscopic approaches, and as renormalization group fixed points. Luttinger liquids are introduced using the bosonization formalism, and their essential differences with Fermi liquids are pointed out. Applications to transport effects, the effect of disorder, quantum spin chains, and spin ladders, both insulating and metallic, are given.
We show that a strongly correlated Fermi system with the fermion condensate, which exhibits strong deviations from Landau Fermi liquid behavior, is driven into the Landau Fermi liquid by applying a small magnetic field $B$ at temperature T=0. This field-induced Landau Fermi liquid behavior provides the constancy of the Kadowaki-Woods ratio. A reentrance into the strongly correlated regime is observed if the magnetic field $B$ decreases to zero, then the effective mass $M^*$ diverges as $M^*\propto 1/\sqrt{B}$. At finite temperatures, the strongly correlated regime is restored at some temperatu…
We introduce a lattice model of interacting spins and bosons that leads to Luttinger-liquid physics, and allows for quantitative tests of the theory of bosonization by means of trapped-ion or superconducting-circuit experiments. By using a variational bosonization ansatz, we calculate the power-law decay of spin and boson correlation functions, and study their dependence on a single tunable parameter, namely a bosonic driving. For small drivings, Matrix-Product-States (MPS) numerical methods are shown to be efficient and validate our ansatz. Conversely, even static MPS become inefficient for l…
An intense investigation of possible non-Fermi liquid states of matter has been inspired by two of the most intriguing phenomena discovered in the past quarter century, namely high temperature superconductivity and the fractional quantum Hall effect. Despite enormous conceptual strides, these two fields have developed largely along separate paths. Two widely employed theories are the resonating valence bond theory for high temperature superconductivity and the composite fermion theory for the fractional quantum Hall effect. The goal of this "perspective" article is to note that they subscribe …
A non-abelian spin liquid in triangular lattice spin-1 systems was recently formulated in the form of continuum field theory [T. Grover, and T. Senthil, Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 077203 (2011); Cenke Xu, A.W.W. Ludwig, arXiv:1012.5671]. It has spin-1/2 bosonic spinons coupled to emergent quaternion gauge fields, and can be obtained by quantum disordering a non-collinear spin nematic order hypothesized to describe NiGa_2S_4 [H. Tsunetsugu, and M. Arikawa, J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 75, 083701 (2006)], However a microscopic lattice description, e.g. the lattice spinon (mean-field) Hamiltonian and the spin w…
Non-Fermi liquid behavior of strongly correlated Fermi systems is derived within the Landau approach. We attribute this behavior to a phase transition associated with a rearrangement of the Landau state that leads to flattening of a portion of the single-particle spectrum $ε({\bf p})$ in the vicinity of the Fermi surface. We demonstrate that the quasiparticle subsystem responsible for the flat spectrum possesses the same thermodynamic properties as a gas of localized spins. Theoretical results compare favorably with available experimental data. While departing radically from prevalent views on…
A crossover from a non-Fermi liquid to a Fermi liquid phase in Yb$_2$Ni$_{12}$P$_7$ is observed by analyzing electrical resistivity $ρ(T)$, magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$, specific heat $C(T)$, and thermoelectric power $S(T)$ measurements. The electronic contribution to specific heat, $C_{e}(T)$, behaves as $C_{e}(T)/T \sim -\ln(T)$ for 5 K $< T <$ 15 K, which is consistent with non-Fermi liquid behavior. Below $T \sim$ 4 K, the upturn in $C_{e}(T)/T$ begins to saturate, suggesting that the system crosses over into a Fermi-liquid ground state. This is consistent with robust $ρ(T) - ρ_0 = AT^2$…
This paper is concerned with the weak-moment magnetism in heavy-fermion materials and its relation to the non-Fermi liquid physics observed near the transition to the Fermi liquid. We explore the hypothesis that the primary fluctuations responsible for the non-Fermi liquid physics are those associated with the destruction of the large Fermi surface of the Fermi liquid. Magnetism is suggested to be a low-energy instability of the resulting small Fermi surface state. A concrete realization of this picture is provided by a fractionalized Fermi liquid state which has a small Fermi surface of condu…
We study the effect of electron hopping in triple quantum dots modelled by the three-impurity Anderson model. We determine the range of hopping parameters where the system exhibits the two-channel Kondo effect and has non-Fermi-liquid properties in a wide temperature interval. As this interval is entered from above, the conductance through the side dots increases to a half of the conductance quantum, while the conductance through the system remains small. At lower temperatures the conductance through the system increases to the unitary limit as the system crosses over to the Fermi-liquid groun…
We introduce the concept of a bosonic spin liquid condensate (SLC), where spinful bosons in a lattice form a zero-temperature spin disordered charge condensate that preserves the spin rotation symmetry, but breaks the U(1) symmetry due to a spinless order parameter with charge one. It has an energy gap to all the spin excitations. We show that such SLC states can be realized in a system of spin $S\ge 2$ bosons. In particular, we analyze the SLC phase diagram in the spin 2 case using a mean-field variational wave function method. We show there is a direct analogy between the SLC and the resonat…
In this paper, we study the lightly doped Kitaev spin liquid (DKSL) and find it to be a Fermi liquid state. The DKSL has a closed Fermi surface around the center of the Brillouin zone with the quantized volume determined by the Luttinger's theorem. It has well-defined quasiparticles near the Fermi surface and can be detected in the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The DKSL has the topological Kitaev spin liquid (KSL) as its neutral background. It violates the Wiedemann-Franz law and has a large Wilson ration. These results has the potential experimental test in the iridates upon dopi…
The appearance of the fermion condensation, which can be compared to the Bose-Einstein condensation, in high-T_c metals, heavy-fermion metals and in other liquids is considered, its properties are discussed and a large number of experimental evidences in favor of the existence of the fermion condensate is presented.
We study the ground state phase diagram of a one-dimensional hard-core bosonic model with nearest-neighbor interactions (XXZ model) where every site is coupled Ohmically to an independent but identical reservoir, hereby generalizing spin-boson models to interacting spin-boson systems. We show that a bath-induced Bose metal phase can occur in the ground state phase diagram away from half filling. This phase is compressible, gapless, and conducting but not superfluid. At haf-filling, only a Luttinger liquid and a charge density wave are found. The phase transition between them is of Kosterlitz-T…
We show that the Luttinger theorem, a robust feature of Fermi liquids, can be violated in non-Fermi liquids. We compute non-Fermi liquid Green functions using duality to black holes and find that the volume of the Fermi surface depends exponentially on the scaling dimension, which is a measure of the coupling. This demonstrates that Luttinger's theorem does not extend to non-Fermi liquids. We comment on possible experimental signatures.
A system with charge conservation and lattice translation symmetry has a well-defined filling $ν$, which is a real number representing the average charge per unit cell. We show that if $ν$ is fractional (i.e. not an integer), this imposes very strong constraints on the low-energy theory of the system and give a framework to understand such constraints in great generality, vastly generalizing the Luttinger and Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorems. The most powerful constraint comes about if $ν$ is continuously tunable (i.e. the system is charge-compressible), in which case we show that the low-energy t…
We propose a skyrmion liquid state for the non-Fermi liquid (NFL) phase in Ge-substituted YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$, where skyrmions form their Fermi surface, argued to result from the strongly coupled nature between skyrmions and itinerant electrons. The fermionized skyrmion theory identifies the antiferromagnetic (AF) transition with the Lifshitz transition, where the quantum critical point (QCP) is characterized by the dynamical critical exponent $z = 2$. Nonlocal interactions between skyrmions allow a critical line above the AF QCP, which originates from the Kondo-coupling effect with itinerant e…
Quantum impurities serve as in-situ probes of the frustrated quantum magnets, and Dirac spin liquids are an important class of quantum spin liquids. Here, we present a general method, a combination of the Chern-Simons fermionization and the Wess-Zumino-Witten theory, to study the quantum impurity in Dirac spin liquids. Under the Chern-Simons fermionization, the gauge fluctuations are apparently suppressed and the low-energy physics is described by a number of Dirac valleys with valley-dependent pseudospin-momentum locking. The (2+1)D effective theory can be further reduced into the (1+1)D Wess…
The role of Coulomb correlations in the iron pnictide LaFeAsO is studied by generalizing exact diagonalization dynamical mean field theory to five orbitals. For rotationally invariant Hund's rule coupling a continuous transition from a paramagnetic Fermi-liquid phase to a non-Fermi-liquid metallic phase exhibiting frozen moments is found at moderate Coulomb energies. For Ising-like exchange, this transition is first order and occurs at a lower critical Coulomb energy. The correlation-induced scattering rate as a function of doping relative to half-filling, i.e., delta = n/5-1, where n=6 for th…
Entanglement of spin and orbital Kondo effect is investigated on the basis of a Kondo-type exchange model with twofold orbital degeneracy. By using Wilson's numerical renormalization-group method, we examine dynamical and thermal properties respecting the difference in time-reversal property of multipole operators. In the presence of particle-hole symmetry, the model has a new non-Fermi-liquid fixed point with a fractional entropy. The spectral intensity of the quadrupole susceptibility diverges in the zero-frequency limit, while the dipole susceptibility shows a Fermi-liquid-like behavior. Th…
We solve a very general two-channel fermion-boson model describing charge transport within some background medium by means of a refined pseudo-site density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique. Performing a careful finite-size scaling analysis, we determine the ground-state phase diagram and convincingly prove that the model exhibits a metal-insulator quantum phase transition for the half-filled band case. In order to characterize the metallic and insulating regimes we calculate besides the local particle densities and fermion-boson correlation functions, the kinetic energy, the charg…
Multiple-band nature of electronic energy bands leads to novel physical effects in solids. In this paper, we clarify physical properties of a Fermi system with a pair of electron and hole Fermi surfaces (FSs), whose coupling is mediated by a critical U(1) boson field. By using a one-loop renormalization group analysis, we show that when the boson field undergoes a quantum phase transition with broken U(1) symmetry, the multiple-band Fermi system shows a non-Fermi liquid (non-FL) behaviour in its thermodynamic and magnetic properties. At a quantum critical point (QCP), Fermi velocities of the t…
In order to understand the non-Fermi-liquid behavior of MnSi under pressure we propose a scenario on the basis of the multispiral state of the magnetic moment. This state can describe the recent critical experiment of the Bragg sphere in the neutron scattering which is the key ingredient of the non-Fermi-liquid behavior.
Using the numerical renormalization group method, we investigate an extended Anderson model, in which correlated electrons with the $Γ_1$(singlet)-$\Gamma4$(triplet) f$^2$ crystalline-electric-field (CEF) configuration hybridize with conduction electrons of $Γ_7$(doublet) and $Γ_8$ (quartet) under cubic $O_h$ symmetry, from a strong spin-orbit interaction limit. For the case of the parameters relevant to PrFe4P12, the system is under competition between the CEF singlet fixed point and the multichannel Kondo non-Fermi liquid fixed point arising from the quadrupolar coupling between the impurity…
The question of Fermi liquid vs. non-Fermi liquid behavior induced by strong correlations is one of the prominent problems in metallic local moment systems. As standard models for such systems, the SU(N) x SU(M) Anderson impurity models exhibit both Fermi liquid and non-Fermi liquid behavior, depending on their symmetry. Using an auxiliary boson method, we present a generally applicable scheme to select the relevant contributions in the low frequency regime, while preserving the local gauge symmetry of the model. It amounts to a conserving T-matrix approximation (CTMA) including coherent spin …
We present two 2D lattice models with non-Fermi liquid metallic phases. We show that the low energy physics of these models is exactly described by a Fermi sea of fractionalized quasiparticles coupled to a fluctuating U(1) gauge field. In the first model, the underlying degrees of freedom are spin 1/2 fermions. This model demonstrates that electrons can in principle give rise to non-Fermi liquid metallic phases. In the second model, the underlying degrees of freedom are spinless bosons. This model provides a concrete example of a (non-Fermi liquid) Bose metal. With little modification, it also…
One of the most successful theories of a non-Fermi liquid metallic state is the composite Fermi liquid (CFL) theory of the half-filled Landau level. In this paper, we study continuous quantum phase transitions out of the CFL state and into a Landau Fermi liquid, in the limit of no disorder and fixed particle number. This transition can be induced by tuning the bandwidth of the Landau level relative to the interaction energy, for instance through an externally applied periodic potential. We find a transition to the Landau Fermi liquid through a gapless Mott insulator with a Fermi surface of neu…
In the study of non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) phenomena in correlated metals, U2Pt2In is of special interest as it is one of the rare stoichiometric (undoped) materials that show NFL behaviour at ambient pressure. Here we report on the stability of the NFL phase with respect to hydrostatic pressure (p< 1.8 GPa). Electrical resistivity data under pressure, taken on a single-crystalline sample for a current in the tetragonal plane, show that T_FL, i.e. the temperature below which the Fermi-liquid T^2-term is observed, increases with pressure as T_FL ~ (p-p_c), where p_c~0 is a critical pressure. This p…
I review our incomplete understanding of non-Fermi liquid behavior in heavy fermion systems at a quantum critical point. General considerations suggest that critical antiferromagnetic fluctuations do not destroy the Fermi surface by scattering the heavy electrons- but by actually breaking up the internal structure of the heavy fermion. I contrast the weak, and strong-coupling view of the quantum phase transition, emphasizing puzzles and questions that recent experiments raise.
