We report $^{77}$Se NMR data in the normal and superconducting states of a single crystal of FeSe for several different field orientations. The Knight shift is suppressed in the superconducting state for in-plane fields, but does not vanish at zero temperature. For fields oriented out of the plane, little or no reduction is observed below $T_c$. These results reflect spin-singlet pairing emerging from a nematic state with large orbital susceptibility and spin-orbit coupling. The spectra and spin-relaxation rate data reveal electronic inhomogeneity that is enhanced in the superconducting state, possibly arising from enhanced density of states in the vortex cores. Despite the spin polarization of these states, there is no evidence for antiferromagnetic fluctuations.
The interplay between the nematic order and magnetism in FeSe is not yet well understood. There is a controversy concerning the relationship between orbital and spin degrees of freedom in FeSe and their relevance for superconductivity. Here we investigate the effect of S substitution on the nematic transition temperature ($T_{\rm n}$) and the low-energy spin fluctuations (SF) in FeSe single crystals. We show that the low-energy SF emerge below the nematic transition. The difference between the onset temperature for the critical SF ($T_{\rm SF}$) and $T_{\rm n}$ is small for FeSe but significan…
FeSe is arguably the simplest, yet the most enigmatic, iron-based superconductor. Its nematic but non-magnetic ground state is unprecedented in this class of materials and stands out as a current puzzle. Here, our NMR measurements in the nematic state of mechanically detwinned FeSe reveal that both the Knight shift and the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 possess an in-plane anisotropy opposite to that of the iron pnictides LaFeAsO and BaFe2As2. Using a microscopic electron model that includes spin-orbit coupling, our calculations show that an opposite quasiparticle weight ratio between the …
A nematic transition preceding a long-range spin density wave antiferromagnetic phase is a common feature of many Fe based superconductors. However, in the FeSe system with a nematic transition at $T_{\rm s} \approx$ 90 K no evidence for long-range static magnetism down to very low temperature was found. The lack of magnetism is a challenge for the theoretical description of FeSe. Here, we investigated high-quality single crystals of FeSe using high-field (up to 9.5 Tesla) muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) measurements. The $μ$SR Knight shift and the bulk susceptibility linearly scale at high tempera…
We report high-pressure $^{77}$Se NMR studies on FeSe single crystals that reveal a prominent inhomogeneous NMR linewidth broadening upon cooling, with the magnetic field applied along the tetragonal [110] direction. The data indicate the existence of short-range-ordered, inhomogeneous electronic nematicity, which has surprisingly long time scales over milliseconds. The short-range order survives temperatures up to $8$ times the structural transition temperature, and remains robust against pressure, in contrast to the strong pressure-dependence of the orbital ordering, structural transition, a…
To elucidate the magnetic structure and the origin of the nematicity in FeSe, we perform a high-pressure $^{77}$Se NMR study on FeSe single crystals. We find a suppression of the structural transition temperature with pressure up to about 2 GPa from the anisotropy of the Knight shift. Above 2 GPa, a stripe-order antiferromagnetism that breaks the spatial four-fold rotational symmetry is determined by the NMR spectra under different field orientations and with temperatures down to 50 mK. The magnetic phase transition is revealed to be first-order type, implying the existence of a concomitant st…
To elucidate the origin of nematic order in FeSe, we performed field-dependent 77Se-NMR measurements on single crystals of FeSe. We observed orbital ordering from the splitting of the NMR spectra and Knight shift and a suppression of it with magnetic field B0 up to 16 T applied parallel to the Fe-planes. There is a significant change in the distribution and magnitude of the internal magnetic field across the orbital ordering temperature Torb while stripe-type antiferromagnetism is absent. Giant antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin fluctuations measured by the NMR spin-lattice relaxation are gradually …
The cuprates and iron-based high-temperature superconductors share many common features: layered strongly anisotropic crystal structure, strong electronic correlations, interplay between different types of electronic ordering, the intrinsic spatial inhomogeneity due to doping. The understanding of complex interplay between these factors is crucial for a directed search of new high-temperature superconductors. Here we show the appearance of inhomogeneous gossamer superconductivity in bulk FeSe compound at ambient pressure and at temperature 5 times higher than its zero-resistance $T_c$. This di…
We have performed $^{27}$Al-NMR measurements on single-crystalline UPd$_2$Al$_3$ with the field parallel to the $c$ axis to investigate the superconducting (SC) properties near the upper critical field of superconductivity $H_{\rm c2}$. The broadening of the NMR linewidth below 14~K indicates the appearance of the internal field at the Al site, which originates from the antiferromagnetically ordered moments of U 5$f$ electrons. In the SC state well below $μ_0H_{\rm c2}$ = 3.4~T, the broadening of the NMR linewidth due to the SC diamagnetism and a decrease in the Knight shift are observed, whic…
We report on the critical current density Jc and the vortex dynamics of pristine and 3 MeV proton irradiated (cumulative dose equal to 2x10^16 cm^-2) $β$-FeSe single crystals. We also analyze a remarkable dependence of the superconducting critical temperature Tc, Jc and the flux creep rate S on the sample mounting method. Free-standing crystals present Tc =8.4(1)K, which increases to 10.5(1)K when they are fixed to the sample holder by embedding them with GE-7031 varnish. On the other hand, the irradiation has a marginal effect on Tc. The pinning scenario can be ascribed to twin boundaries and…
The importance of the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effect in Fe-based superconductors (FeSCs) has recently been under hot debate. Considering the Hund's coupling-induced electronic correlation, the understanding of the role of SOC in FeSCs is not trivial and is still elusive. Here, through a comprehensive study of 77Se and 57Fe nuclear magnetic resonance, a nontrivial SOC effect is revealed in the nematic state of FeSe. First, the orbital-dependent spin susceptibility, determined by the anisotropy of the 57Fe Knight shift, indicates a predominant role from the 3dxy orbital, which suggests the coe…
When exposed to high magnetic fields, certain materials manifest an exotic superconducting (SC) phase that has attracted considerable attention. A proposed explanation for the origin of the high-field SC phase is the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state. This state is characterized by inhomogeneous superconductivity, where the Cooper pairs have finite center-of-mass momenta. Recently, the high-field SC phase was observed in FeSe, and it was deemed to originate from the FFLO state. Here, we synthesize FeSe single crystals with different levels of disorder. The level of disorder is expr…
We propose a simple method of calculating inhomogeneous, atomic-scale phenomena in superconductors which makes use of the wave function information traditionally discarded in the construction of tight-binding models used in the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. The method uses symmetry based first principles Wannier functions to visualize the effects of superconducting pairing on the distribution of electronic states over atoms within a crystal unit cell. Local symmetries lower than the global lattice symmetry can thus be exhibited as well, rendering theoretical comparisons with scanning tunneli…
The tetragonal FeSe phase is an intensively investigated iron based superconductor. In this study we examined the influence of Ag addition on the superconducting properties of selenium deficient polycrystalline FeSe0.94. The samples were obtained by solid state reaction and melting methods. XRD analysis shows the presence of tetragonal phase and EDX analysis establishes inhomogeneous Ag distribution in the grains. The superconducting properties were investigated by fundamental and third harmonic AC magnetic susceptibility. The intergranular critical current determined from AC magnetic suscepti…
We have performed a low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy study of the iron chalcogenide superconductor FeSe_{0.4}Te_{0.6} with T_{C}~14 K. Spatially resolved measurements of the superconducting gap reveal substantial inhomogeneity on a nanometer length scale. Analysis of the structure of the gap seen in tunneling spectra by comparison with calculated spectra for different superconducting order parameters (s-wave, d-wave, and anisotropic s-wave) yields the best agreement for an order parameter with anisotropic s-wave symmetry with an anisotropy of ~40%. The temperature…
We have performed $^{125}$Te NMR on a single crystal of the novel layered superconductor Fe$_{1.04}$Te$_{0.67}$Se$_{0.33}$ for the first time. The spin parts of the Knight shifts for both $H // a$, $H // c$ are suppressed in the superconducting state, indicating the spin singlet superconductivity. At superconducting state, $1/T_{1}$ shows the power-law behavior ($\sim T^{3}$) without any coherent peaks. Observations of the residual density of state and the $T^{3}$-law indicate the presence of the line node in the superconducting gap. In the normal state, $1/T_{1}T$ which probes the \textbf{q}-…
Bulk FeSe is superconducting with a critical temperature $T_c$ $\cong$ 8 K and SrTiO$_3$ is insulating in nature, yet high-temperature superconductivity has been reported at the interface between a single-layer FeSe and SrTiO$_3$. Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy measurements observe a gap opening at the Fermi surface below $\approx$ 60 K. Elucidating the microscopic properties and understanding the pairing mechanism of single-layer FeSe is of utmost importance as it is a basic building block of iron-based superconductors. Here, we use the low-energy …
The 17O and 207Pb NMR spectra were measured in ceramic samples in the metallic phase of BaPb_{1-x}Bi_{x}O_3 oxides (0<x< 0.33). The inhomogeneous magnetic broadening which appears due to a distribution of the Knight shifts was analyzed in detail. It is shown that Bi atoms, which are randomly incorporated in BaPbO_3 parent compound give rise to an increased conduction electron spin density within an area which is delimited by its two first cation shells. According to NMR data the percolative overlap of these areas occurs in superconducting compositions and it is accompanied by a sharp growth of…
Nuclear magnetic resonance measurements were performed on CeCu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ in the presence of a magnetic field close to the upper critical field $μ_{0} H_{\rm c2}$ in order to investigate its superconducting (SC) properties near pair-breaking fields. In lower fields, the Knight shift and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by temperature $1/T_1T$ abruptly decreased below the SC transition temperature $T_{\rm c}(H)$, a phenomenon understood within the framework of conventional spin-singlet superconductivity. In contrast, $1/T_1T$ was enhanced just below $T_{\rm c}(H)$ and exhibited a…
UTe$_2$ is a recently discovered promising candidate for a spin-triplet superconductor. In contrast to conventional spin-singlet superconductivity, spin-triplet superconductivity possesses spin and angular momentum degrees of freedom. To detect these degrees of freedom and obtain the solid evidence of spin-triplet superconductivity in UTe$_2$, we performed $^{125}$Te-NMR measurement. We previously reported that the shoulder signal appears in NMR spectra below the superconducting (SC) transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ in $H \parallel b$, and that a slight decrease in the Knight shift along the…
