We study the generalization of the three-dimensional two-band Hopf insulator to the case of many bands, where all the bands are separated from each other by band gaps. The obtained $\mathbb{Z}$ classification of such a $N$-band Hopf insulator is related to the quantized isotropic magnetoelectric coefficient of its bulk. The boundary of a $N$-band Hopf insulator can be fully gapped, and we find that there is no unique way of dividing a finite system into bulk and boundary. Despite this non-uniqueness, we find that the magnetoelectric coefficient of the bulk and the anomalous Hall conductivity of the boundary are quantized to the same integer value. We propose an experiment where the quantized boundary effect can be measured in a non-equilibrium state.
Three-dimensional (3D) topological insulators in general need to be protected by certain kinds of symmetries other than the presumed $U(1)$ charge conservation. A peculiar exception is the Hopf insulators which are 3D topological insulators characterized by an integer Hopf index. To demonstrate the existence and physical relevance of the Hopf insulators, we construct a class of tight-binding model Hamiltonians which realize all kinds of Hopf insulators with arbitrary integer Hopf index. These Hopf insulator phases have topologically protected surface states and we numerically demonstrate the r…
Hopf insulators are topological insulators whose topological behavior arises from the nontrivial mapping from a 3D sphere to a 2D sphere, known as the Hopf map. The Hopf map, typically encountered in the study of spinor and skyrmion systems, is classified topologically by an integer invariant called the Hopf index. Here we show that due to the periodic circulation of light inside each microring, a 2D lattice of microring resonators can emulate an $N$-band photonic Hopf insulator with nontrivial Hopf index. In particular, we show by numerical computation and direct analytical proof that the $N$…
The Hopf insulators are characterized by a topological invariant called Hopf index which classifies maps from three-sphere to two-sphere, instead of a Chern number or a Chern parity. In contrast to topological insulator, the Hopf insulator is not protected by any kind of symmetry. By dimensional reduction, we argue that there exists a new type of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ index for 2D Hamiltonian with vanishing Chern number. Specific model Hamiltonian with this nontrivial $\mathbb{Z}_2$ index is constructed. We also numerically calculate the topological protected edge modes of this dimensional reduced Ho…
We introduce new three-dimensional topological phases of two-band models using the Pontryagin-Thom construction. In symmetry class A these are the infinitely many Hopf-Chern topological insulators, which are hybrids of layered Chern insulators and the Hopf insulator. In symmetry class C, there is a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-classification with the non-trivial topological phase, the Hopf superconductor, being realized by a construction that doubles the usual Hopf insulator in momentum space. For these new topological phases we investigate the energy spectrum in the presence of a boundary and find gapless …
Three-dimensional (3D) two-band Hopf insulators are a paradigmatic example of topological phases beyond the topological classifications based on powerful methods like $K$-theory and symmetry indicators.Since this class of topological insulating phases was theoretically proposed in 2008, they have attracted significant interest owing to their conceptual novelty, connection to knot theory, and many fascinating physical properties. However, because their realization requires special forms of long-range spin-orbit coupling (SOC), they have not been achieved in any 3D system yet. Here we report the…
Hopf insulators are intriguing three-dimensional topological insulators characterized by an integer topological invariant. They originate from the mathematical theory of Hopf fibration and epitomize the deep connection between knot theory and topological phases of matter, which distinguishes them from other classes of topological insulators. Here, we implement a model Hamiltonian for Hopf insulators in a solid-state quantum simulator and report the first experimental observation of their topological properties, including fascinating topological links associated with the Hopf fibration and the …
The Hopf insulator is a three-dimensional topological insulator outside the standard classification of topological insulators. Here we consider two types of non-Hermitian Hopf insulators, one without and one with the non-Hermitian skin effect. The isolated gapless points of the Hermitian model are broadened into finite regimes in the non-Hermitian models. However, the modulus of the Hopf index remains quantized in the gapped regions. The model without the non-Hermitian skin effect allows an accurate evaluation of its generalized Hopf index and energy spectrum, showing an agreement between the …
An electron moving in a magnetically ordered background feels an effective magnetic field that can be both stronger and more rapidly varying than typical externally applied fields. One consequence is that insulating magnetic materials in three dimensions can have topologically nontrivial properties of the effective band structure. For the simplest case of two bands, these "Hopf insulators" are characterized by a topological invariant as in quantum Hall states and Z_2 topological insulators, but instead of a Chern number or parity, the underlying invariant is the Hopf invariant that classifies …
We predict the existence of a novel Floquet topological insulator in three-dimensional two-band systems, the Floquet Hopf insulator, which possesses two distinct topological invariants. One is the Hopf $\mathbb{Z}$ invariant, a linking number characterizing the (non-driven) Hopf topological insulator. The second invariant is an intrinsically Floquet $\mathbb{Z}_2$ invariant, and represents a condensed matter realization of the topology underlying the Witten anomaly in particle physics. Both invariants arise from topological defects in the system's time-evolution, subject to a process in which …
Knots and links are fascinating and intricate topological objects. Their influence spans from DNA and molecular chemistry to vortices in superfluid helium, defects in liquid crystals and cosmic strings in the early universe. Here, we find that knotted structures also exist in a peculiar class of three-dimensional topological insulators---the Hopf insulators. In particular, we demonstrate that the momentum-space spin textures of Hopf insulators are twisted in a nontrivial way, which implies the presence of various knot and link structures. We further illustrate that the knots and nontrivial spi…
Hopf insulators are exotic topological states of matter outside the standard ten-fold way classification based on discrete symmetries. Its topology is captured by an integer invariant that describes the linking structures of the Hamiltonian in the three-dimensional momentum space. In this paper, we investigate the quantum dynamics of Hopf insulators across a sudden quench and show that the quench dynamics is characterized by a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ invariant $ν$ which reveals a rich interplay between quantum quench and static band topology. We construct the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological invariant using …
Three-dimensional, crystalline Hopf insulators are generic members of unitary Wigner-Dyson class, which can break all global discrete symmetries and point group symmetries. In the absence of first Chern number for any two-dimensional plane of Brillouin zone, the Hopf invariant $N_H \in \mathbb{Z}$. But in the presence of Chern number $N_H \in \mathbb{Z}_{2q}$, where $q$ is the greatest common divisor of Chern numbers for $xy$, $yz$, and $xz$ planes of Brillouin zone. How does $N_H$ affect topological quantization of isotropic, magneto-electric coefficient? We answer this question with calculat…
We present a topological characterization of time-periodically driven two-band models in 2+1 dimensions as Hopf insulators. The intrinsic periodicity of the Floquet system with respect to both time and the underlying two-dimensional momentum space constitutes a map from a three dimensional torus to the Bloch sphere. As a result, we find that the driven system can be understood by appealing to a Hopf map that is directly constructed from the micromotion of the drive. Previously found winding numbers are shown to correspond to Hopf invariants, which are associated with linking numbers describing…
A quantum quench is a nonequilibrium dynamics governed by the unitary evolution. We propose a two-band model whose quench dynamics is characterized by an arbitrary Hopf number belonging to the homotopy group $π_{3}(S^{2})=\mathbb{Z}$. When we quench a system from an insulator with the Chern number $C_{i}\in π_{2}(S^{2})=\mathbb{Z}$ to another insulator with the Chern number $C_{f} $, the preimage of the Hamiltonian vector forms links having the Hopf number $C_{f}-C_{i}$. We also investigate a quantum-quench dynamics for a four-band model carrying an arbitrary second-Chern number $N\in π_{4}(S^…
We identify topological aspects of the subextensive magnetic moment contributed by the surfaces of a three-dimensional crystallite -- assumed to be insulating in the bulk as well as on all surface facets, with trivial Chern invariants in the bulk. The geometric component of this subextensive moment is given by its derivative with respect to the chemical potential, at zero temperature and zero field, per unit surface area, and hence corresponds to the surface magnetic compressibility. The sum of the surface compressibilities contributed by two opposite facets of a cube-shaped crystallite is qua…
Flat bands form in a 3D Hopf-linked graphene crystal or a 3D carbon allotrope named Hopfene, which qualitatively differ from bands of only graphenes. This paper discusses carbon-hexagon deformation on the level shift of a flat band via density-functional-theoretical (DFT) analysis to set the flat-band level to the Fermi level, viz., to utilize its large density of states for magnetic- and electronic-property researches. Tight-binding (TB) analysis is also performed for a comparison with the DFT analysis; here, a qualitative agreement between TB and DFT bands is obtained. The DFT analysis shows…
Topological semimetals can be classified by the connectivity and dimensionality of the band cross- ing in momentum space. The band crossings of a Dirac, Weyl, or an unconventional fermion semimet- al are 0D points, whereas the band crossings of a nodal-line semimetal are 1D closed loops. Here we propose that the presence of perpendicular crystalline mirror planes can protect 3D band crossings characterized by nontrivial links such as a Hopf link or a coupled-chain, giving rise to a variety of new types of topological semimetals. We show that the nontrivial winding number protects topolog- ical…
We study a new class of non-Hermitian topological phases in three dimension in the absence of any symmetry, where the topological robust band degeneracies are Hopf-link exceptional lines. As a concrete example, we investigate the non-Hermitian band structures of nodal line semimetals under non-Hermitian perturbations, where the Fermi surfaces can transit from 1d nodal lines to 2d twisting surfaces with Hopf-link boundaries when the winding number defined along the nodal line is $\pm 1$. The linking numbers of these linked exceptional line phases are also proposed, based on the integral of Cher…
We calculate the current-voltage characteristic of a one-dimensional band insulator with magnetic field and Rashba spin-orbit coupling which is connected to nonmagnetic leads. Without spin-orbit coupling we find a complete spin-filtering effect, meaning that the electric transport occurs in one spin channel only. For a large magnetic field which closes the band gap, we show that spin-orbit coupling leads to a transition from metallic to insulating behavior. The oscillations of the different spin-components of the current with the length of the transport channel are studied as well.
The effect of a magnetic field on a two-dimensional Chern band insulator is discussed. It is shown that, unlike the trivial insulator, an anomalous Hall insulator with Chern number $C$ becomes a metal when a magnetic field is applied at constant particle density, for any $C>0$. For a time reversal invariant topological insulator with a spin Chern resolved number, $C_\uparrow= - C_\downarrow=C$, the magnetic field induces a spin polarized spin Hall insulator. We consider also the effect of a superlattice potential and extend previous results for the quantization of the Hall conductance of fille…
Pontrjagin's seminal topological classification of two-band Hamiltonians in three momentum dimensions is hereby enriched with the inclusion of a crystallographic rotational symmetry. The enrichment is attributed to a new topological invariant which quantifies a $2π$-quantized change in the Berry-Zak phase between a pair of rotation-invariant lines in the bulk, three-dimensional Brillouin zone; because this change is reversed on the complementary section of the Brillouin zone, we refer to this new invariant as a returning Thouless pump (RTP). We find that the RTP is associated to anomalous valu…
Hopf-link semimetals exhibit exotic gapless band structures with fascinating topological properties, which have never been observed in nature. Here we demonstrate nodal lines with topological form of Hopf-link chains in artificial semimetal-bands. Driving superconducting quantum circuits with elaborately designed microwave fields, we mapped the momentum space of a lattice to a parameter space of the Hamiltonian for a Hopf-link semimetal. By measuring the energy spectrum, we directly imaged nodal lines in cubic lattices. By tuning the driving fields, we adjusted various parameters of Hamiltonia…
A family of semiconductors called as Chern band insulator are shown to host exciton bands with non-zero topological Chern integers and chiral exciton edge modes. Using a prototypical two-band Chern insulator model, we calculate a cross-correlation function to obtain the exciton bands and their Chern integers. The lowest exciton band acquires Chern integers such as $\pm 1$ and $\pm 2$ in electronic Chern insulator phase. The non-trivial topology can be experimentally observed both by non-local optoelectronic response of exciton edge modes and by a phase shift in the cross-correlation response d…
Two-dimensional 2-bands insulators breaking time reversal symmetry can present topological phases indexed by a topological invariant called the Chern number. Here we first propose an efficient procedure to determine this topological index. This tool allows in principle to conceive 2-bands Hamiltonians with arbitrary Chern numbers. We apply our methodology to gradually construct a quantum anomalous Hall insulator (Chern insulator) which can be tuned through five topological phases indexed by the Chern numbers {0,+/-1,+/-2}. On a cylindrical finite geometry, such insulator can therefore sustain …
Topological states of matter are characterized by global topological invariants which change their value across a topological quantum phase transition. It is commonly assumed that the transition between topologically distinct noninteracting gapped phases of fermions is necessarily accompanied by the closing of the band gap as long as the symmetries of the system are maintained. We show that such a quantum phase transition is possible without closing the gap in the case of a three-dimensional topological band insulator. We demonstrate this by calculating the free energy of the minimal model for…
Fluctuations of Hamiltonian eigenfunctions, measured by the inverse participation ratio (IPR), turn out to characterize topological-band insulator transitions occurring in 2D Dirac materials like silicene, which is isostructural with graphene but with a strong spin-orbit interaction. Using monotonic properties of the IPR, as a function of a perpendicular electric field (which provides a tunable band gap), we define topological-like quantum numbers that take different values in the topological-insulator and band-insulator phases.
Interfaces between exfoliated topological insulator Bi2Se3 and several transition metals deposited by sputtering were studied by XPS, SIMS, UPS and contact I-V measurements. Chemically clean interfaces can be achieved when coating Bi2Se3 with a transition metal layer as thin as 1 nm, even without capping. Most interestingly, UPS spectra suggest depletion or inversion in the originally n-type topological insulator near the interface. Strong band bending in the topological insulator requires careful material engineering or electric biasing if one desires to make use of the spin locking in surfac…
Phase-change materials are ubiquitous in technology because of their ability to transition between amorphous and crystalline phases fast and reversibly, upon shining light or passing a current. Here we argue that to fully understand their electronic properties it is necessary to define a novel electronic phase: the amorphous obstructed insulator. It differs from an obstructed insulator crystal in that it presents localized edge or surface states irrespective of the sample termination. Consequently, we show that obstructed amorphous insulators in three-dimensions host a surface two-dimensional …
Algebraic and geometric mean density of states in disordered systems may reveal properties of electronic localization. In order to understand the topological phases with disorder in two dimensions, we present the calculated density of states for disordered Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang model. The topological phase is characterized by a perfectly quantized conducting plateau, carried by helical edge states, in a two-terminal setup. In the presence of disorder, the bulk of the topological phase is either a band insulator or an Anderson insulator. Both of them can protect edge states from backscattering.…
We propose a straightforward and effective approach for quantifying the band inversion induced by spin-orbit coupling in band insulators. In this approach we define a quantity as a function of wavevector in the Brillouin zone measuring the spillage between the occupied states of a system with and without SOC. Plots of the spillage throughout the BZ provide a ready indication of the number and location of band inversions driven by SOC. To illustrate the method, we apply this approach to the 2D Kane-Mele model, a 2D Bi bilayer with applied Zeeman field, and to first-principles calculations of so…
We construct a generic two-band model which can describe topological Weyl semimetals with multiple closed Weyl loops. All the existing multi-Weyl-loop semimetals including the nodal-net, or nodal-chain and Hopf-link states can be examined within one same framework. Based on a two-loop model, the corresponding drum-head surface states for these topologically different bulk states are studied and compared with each other. The connection of our model with Hopf insulators is also discussed. Furthermore, to identify experimentally these topologically different Weyl semimetal states, especially dist…
A negative differential resistance (NDR) in a one-dimensional band insulator attached to electrodes is investigated. We systematically examine the effects of an electrode bandwidth and a potential distribution inside the insulator on current-voltage characteristics. We show that, in uncorrelated systems, the NDR is generally caused by a linear potential gradient as well as by a finite electrode bandwidth. In particular, the former reduces the effective bandwidth of the insulator for elastic tunneling by tilting its energy band, so that it brings about the NDR even in the limit of large electro…
We demonstrate theoretically that electric field can drive a quantum phase transition between band insulator to topological insulator in CdTe/HgCdTe/CdTe quantum wells. The numerical results suggest that the electric field could be used as a switch to turn on or off the topological insulator phase, and temperature can affect significantly the phase diagram for different gate voltage and compositions. Our theoretical results provide us an efficient way to manipulate the quantum phase of HgTe quantum wells.
We study a model of an equal mixture of two species of fermions in a deep optical lattice at a filling of two fermions per site. At weak inter-species interaction, the system is a band insulator. When the inter-species interaction is tuned via a Feshbach resonance to be larger than an energy related to the energy separation of the first and second Bloch band, atoms populate equally the two Bloch bands. With weak tunneling between sites of the optical lattice, the system becomes a Mott insulator with the low energy effective Hamiltonian of a spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnet, because of a Hund'…
In this paper we construct a simple, controllable, two dimensional model based on a topological band insulator. It has many attractive properties. (1) We obtain spin-charge separated solitons that are associated with $π$ fluxes. (2) It suggests an alternative way to classify $Z_2$ topological band insulator without resorting to the sample boundary. (3) When the $π$ fluxes are dynamical variables, as in a correlated insulator with emergent gauge fluxes, these solitons are propagating bosonic excitations and their condensation triggers a phase transition into a planar ferromagnet.
We present a class of three dimensional (3D) two-band Floquet topological insulators constructed from two-dimensional Floquet topological insulators with a $Z$ topological index. It is shown that the 3D two-band Floquet topological insulator has a $Z_2$ topological index, whose value can be obtained by numerical calculations or by using a relation to the winding number. The classification of the 3D $Z_2$ Floquet topological insulator, however, cannot be attributed to the stable homotopy groups. Thus, it is an example outside the proposed K-theory classifications of Floquet topological insulato…
A simple two-band model is suggested explaining recently reported unusual features for hopping magnetoresistance and the metal-insulator transition in 2D structures. The model implies that the conductivity is dominated by the upper Hubbard band (D^- band). Experimental studies of hopping magnetoresistance for Si delta doped GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure give additional evidences for the model.
The low-energy band-structure of electrons propagating on a lateral surface of a heterostructure consisting of three dimensional topological insulator (TI) and magnetic insulator layers has been calculated. The energy spectrum is highly tunable depending on the relation between the interlayer tunneling amplitude, Zeeman energy and surface potential. A ratio between the first two parameters controls a topological transition between chiral and helical surface state band-structures. In the former case localized states, whose wave-functions are confined near single TI layers, emerge in a narrow pa…
Bloch theory describes the electronic states in crystals whose energies are distributed as bands over the Brillouin zone. The electronic states corresponding to a (few) isolated energy band(s) thus constitute a vector bundle. The topological properties of these vector bundles provide new characteristics of the corresponding electronic phases. We review some of these properties in the case of (topological) insulators and semi-metals.
We introduce the notion of the strongly correlated band insulator (SCI), where the lowest energy excitations are collective modes (excitons) rather than the single particles. We construct controllable 1/N expansion for SCI to describe their observables properties. A remarkable example of the SCI is bilayer graphene which is shown to be tunable between the SCI and usual weak coupling regime.
Uncertainty relations are studied for a characterization of topological-band insulator transitions in 2D gapped Dirac materials isostructural with graphene. We show that the relative or Kullback-Leibler entropy in position and momentum spaces, and the standard variance-based uncertainty relation, give sharp signatures of topological phase transitions in these systems.
Even if a noninteracting system has zero Berry curvature everywhere in the Brillouin zone, it is possible to introduce interactions that stabilise a fractional Chern insulator. These interactions necessarily break time-reversal symmetry (either spontaneously or explicitly) and have the effect of altering the underlying band structure. We outline a number of ways in which this may be achieved, and show how similar interactions may also be used to create a (time-reversal symmetric) fractional topological insulator. While our approach is rigorous in the limit of long range interactions, we show n…
We reanalyze some of the critical transport experiments and provide a coherent understanding of the current generation of topological insulators (TIs). Currently TI transport studies abound with widely varying claims of the surface and bulk states, often times contradicting each other, and a proper understanding of TI transport properties is lacking. According to the simple criteria given by Mott and Ioffe-Regel, even the best TIs are not true insulators in the Mott sense, and at best, are weakly-insulating bad metals. However, band-bending effects contribute significantly to the TI transport …
A general and beautiful picture for the realization of topological insulators is that the mass term of the Dirac model has a nodal surface wrapping one Dirac point. We show that this geometric picture based on Dirac points can be generalized to extended band degeneracies with nontrivial topological charges. As the nontrivial topological charges force the extended band degeneracies to be created or annihilated in pairs, when the nodal surface of mass wraps one such extended band degeneracy, the resulting gapped phase must be topologically nontrivial since it cannot adiabatically be deformed int…
Very recently, increasing attention has been focused on non-Abelian topological charges, e.g. the quaternion group Q8. Different from Abelian topological band insulators, these systems involve multiple tangled bulk bandgaps and support non-trivial edge states that manifest the non-Abelian topological features. Furthermore, a system with even or odd number of bands will exhibit significant difference in non-Abelian topological classifications. Up to now, there is scant research investigating the even-band non-Abelian topological insulators. Here, we both theoretically explored and experimentall…
Traditional ionic/covalent compound insulators arise from a commensuration between electron count and system volume. On the other hand, conventional topological insulators, outside of quantum hall effect systems, do not typically display such a commensuration. Tnstead, they can undergo a phase transition to a trivial insulator that preserves the electron filling. Nevertheless, in some crystalline insulators, termed filling-enforced quantum band insulators (feQBIs), electron filling can dictate nontrivial topology in the insulating ground state. Currently, little is known about the relation bet…
