In this paper we construct a simple, controllable, two dimensional model based on a topological band insulator. It has many attractive properties. (1) We obtain spin-charge separated solitons that are associated with $π$ fluxes. (2) It suggests an alternative way to classify $Z_2$ topological band insulator without resorting to the sample boundary.
(3) When the $π$ fluxes are dynamical variables, as in a correlated insulator with emergent gauge fluxes, these solitons are propagating bosonic excitations and their condensation triggers a phase transition into a planar ferromagnet.
An important characteristic of topological band insulators is the necessary presence of in-gap edge states on the sample boundary. We utilize this fact to show that when the boundary is reconnected with a twist, there are always zero-energy defect states. This provides a natural connection between novel defects in the two-dimensional $p_{x}+ip_{y}$ superconductor, the Kitaev model, the fractional quantum Hall effect, and the one-dimensional domain wall of polyacetylene.
Electronically phase separated manganite wires are found to exhibit controllable metal-insulator transitions under local electric fields. The switching characteristics are shown to be fully reversible, polarity independent, and highly resistant to thermal breakdown caused by repeated cycling. It is further demonstrated that multiple discrete resistive states can be accessed in a single wire. The results conform to a phenomenological model in which the inherent nanoscale insulating and metallic domains are rearranged through electrophoretic-like processes to open and close percolation channels.
We show theoretically that a photonic topological insulator can support edge solitons that are strongly self-localized and propagate unidirectionally along the lattice edge. The photonic topological insulator consists of a Floquet lattice of coupled helical waveguides, in a medium with local Kerr nonlinearity. The soliton behavior is strongly affected by the topological phase of the linear lattice. The topologically nontrivial phase gives a continuous family of solitons, while the topologically trivial phase gives an embedded soliton that occurs at a single power, and arises from a self-induce…
We theoretically explore the dynamics of spatial solitons in nonlinear/interacting bosonic topological insulators. We employ a time-reversal broken Lieb-lattice analog of a Chern insulator and find that in the presence of a saturable nonlinearity, solitons bifurcate from a band of non-zero Chern number into the topological band gap with vortex-like structure on a sublattice. We numerically demonstrate the existence stable vortex solitons for a range of parameters and that the lattice soliton dynamics are subject to the anomalous velocity associated with large Berry curvature at the topological…
Pursuing topological phase and matter in a variety of systems is one central issue in current physical sciences and engineering. Motivated by the recent experimental observation of corner states in acoustic and photonic structures, we theoretically study the dipolar-coupled gyration motion of magnetic solitons on the two-dimensional breathing kagome lattice. We calculate the phase diagram and predict both the Tamm-Shockley edge modes and the second-order corner states when the ratio between alternate lattice constants is greater than a critical value. We show that the emerging corner states ar…
We report localized and unidirectional nonlinear traveling edge waves discovered theoretically and numerically in a 2D mechanical (phononic) topological insulator. The lattice consists of a collection of pendula with weak Duffing nonlinearity connected by linear springs. We show that the classical 1D nonlinear Schrodinger equation governs the envelope of 2D edge modes, and study the propagation of traveling waves and rogue waves in 1D as edge solitons in 2D. As a result of topological protection, these edge solitons persist over long time intervals and through irregular boundaries.
We study the dynamics of spin valves consisting of two layers of magnetic insulators separated by a normal metal in the macrospin model. A current through the spacer generates a spin Hall current that can actuate the magnetization via the spin-transfer torque. We derive expressions for the effective Gilbert damping and the critical currents for the onset of magnetization dynamics including the effects of spin pumping that can be tested by ferromagnetic resonance experiments. The current generates an amplitude asymmetry between the in-phase and out-of-phase modes. We briefly discuss superlattic…
Pursuing topological phases in natural and artificial materials is one of the central topics in modern physical science and engineering. In classical magnetic systems, spin waves (or magnons) and magnetic solitons (such as domain wall, vortex, skyrmion, etc) represent two important excitations. Recently, the topological insulator and semimetal states in magnon- and soliton-based crystals (or metamaterials) have attracted growing attention owing to their interesting dynamics and promising applications for designing robust spintronic devices. Here, we give an overview of current progress of topo…
A salient feature of solid-state topological materials in two dimensions is the presence of conducting electronic edge states that are insensitive to scattering by disorder. Such unidirectional edge states have been explored in many experimental settings beyond solid-state electronic systems, including in photonic devices, mechanical and acoustic structures, and others. It is of great interest to understand how topological states behave in the presence of inter-particle interactions and nonlinearity. Here we experimentally demonstrate unidirectional soliton-like nonlinear states on the edge of…
The doubly-connected polygonal geometry of planar graphene rings is found to bring forth topological configurations for accessing nontrivial relativistic quantum field (RQF) theory models that carry beyond the constant-mass Dirac-fermion theory. These include generation of sign-alternating masses, solitonic excitations, and charge fractionization. The work integrates a RQF Lagrangian formulation with numerical tight-binding Aharonov-Bohm electronic spectra and the generalized position-dependent-mass Dirac equation. In contrast to armchair graphene rings (aGRGs) with pure metallic arms, certain…
Two-dimensional materials exhibit a variety of mechanical instabilities accompanied by spontaneous symmetry breaking. Here we develop a continuum description of the buckling instability of antimonene sheets. Regions of oppositely directed buckling constitute domains separated by domain walls that are solitons in our model. Perturbations about equilibrium propagate as waves with a gapped dispersion in the bulk but there is a gapless mode with linear dispersion that propagates along the domain walls in a manner reminiscent of the electronic modes of topological insulators. We establish that mono…
We consider one-dimensional topological insulators hosting fractionally charged midgap states in the presence and absence of induced superconductivity pairing. Under the protection of a discrete symmetry, relating positive and negative energy states, the solitonic midgap states remain pinned at zero energy when superconducting correlations are induced by proximity effect. When the superconducting pairing dominates the initial insulating gap, Majorana fermion phases develop for a class of insulators. As a concrete example, we study the Creutz model with induced s-wave superconductivity and repu…
Collective dynamics of topological magnetic textures can be thought of as a massive particle moving in a magnetic pinning potential. We demonstrate that inside a cavity resonator this effective mechanical system can feel the electromagnetic radiation pressure from cavity photons through the magneto-optical inverse Faraday and Cotton-Mouton effects. We estimate values for the effective parameters of the optomechanical coupling for two spin textures -- a Bloch domain wall and a chiral magnetic soliton lattice. The soliton lattice has magnetic chirality, so that in circularly polarized light it b…
We study the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ Bose-Hubbard model at incommensurate densities, which describes a one-dimensional system of interacting bosons whose tunneling is dressed by a dynamical $\mathbb{Z}_2$ field. At commensurate densities, the model is known to host intertwined topological phases, where long-range order coexists with non-trivial topological properties. This interplay between spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) and topological symmetry protection gives rise to interesting fractional topological phenomena when the system is doped to certain incommensurate fillings. In particular, we hereb…
We propose a simple realization of the three-dimensional (3D) Weyl semimetal phase, utilizing a multilayer structure, composed of identical thin films of a magnetically-doped 3D topological insulator (TI), separated by ordinary-insulator spacer layers. We show that the phase diagram of this system contains a Weyl semimetal phase of the simplest possible kind, with only two Dirac nodes of opposite chirality, separated in momentum space, in its bandstructure. This particular type of Weyl semimetal has a finite anomalous Hall conductivity, chiral edge states, and occurs as an intermediate phase b…
Magnetic vortices are characterized by the senses of in-plane magnetization chirality and by the polarity of the vortex core. The electrical control of vortex polarity and chirality is highly demanded not only for fundamental understanding on spin dynamics in nano-disks under different circumstances, but also for technological applications, such as magnetic non-volatile memories and spin torque oscillators for neuromorphic computing. Here we report a novel approach that enables one to electrically control both the vortex chirality and polarity with low energy consumption. Thorough micromagneti…
When time reversal symmetry is present there is a sharp distinction between topological and trivial band insulators which ensures that, as parameters are varied, these phases are separated by a phase transition at which the bulk gap closes. Surprisingly we find that even in the absence of time reversal symmetry, gapless regions originating from the phase boundaries persist. Moreover the critical line generically opens up to enclose Chern insulating phases that are thin but of finite extent in the phase diagram. We explain the topological origin of this effect in terms of quantized charge pumpi…
We investigate the properties of the gap-edge states of half-filled interacting disordered zigzag graphene nanoribbons. We find that the midgap states can display the quantized fractional charge of 1/2. These gap-edge states can be represented by topological kinks with their site probability distribution divided between the opposite zigzag edges with different chiralities. In addition, there are numerous spin-split gap-edge states, similar to those in a Mott-Anderson insulator.
We present numerical and analytical results for the optical and acoustic plasmon collective modes of coupled massless-Dirac two-dimensional electron systems. Our results apply to topological insulator (TI) thin films and to two graphene sheets separated by a thin dielectric barrier layer. We find that because of strong bulk dielectric screening TI acoustic modes are locked to the top of the particle-hole continuum and therefore probably unobservable.
We investigate numerically charge, spin, and entanglement dynamics of two electrons confined in a gated semiconductor nanowire. The electrostatic coupling between electrons in the nanowire and the charges in the metal gates leads to a self-trapping of the electrons which results in soliton-like properties. We show that the interplay of an all-electrically controlled coherent transport of the electron solitons and of the exchange interaction can be used to realize ultrafast SWAP and entangling $\sqrt{\text{SWAP}}$ gates for distant spin qubits. We demonstrate that the latter gate can be used to…
We demonstrate that a combination of disorder and interactions in a two-dimensional bulk topological insulator can generically drive its helical edge insulating. We establish this within the framework of helical Luttinger liquid theory and exact Emery-Luther mapping. The gapless glassy edge state spontaneously breaks time-reversal symmetry in a `spin glass' fashion, and may be viewed as a localized state of solitons which carry half integer charge. Such a qualitatively distinct edge state provides a simple explanation for heretofore puzzling experimental observations. This phase exhibits a str…
The key physics of the spin valve involves spin-polarized conduction electrons propagating between two magnetic layers such that the device conductance is controlled by the relative magnetization orientation of two magnetic layers. Here, we report the effect of a magnon valve which is made of two ferromagnetic insulators (YIG) separated by a nonmagnetic spacer layer (Au). When a thermal gradient is applied perpendicular to the layers, the inverse spin Hall voltage output detected by a Pt bar placed on top of the magnon valve depends on the relative orientation of the magnetization of two YIG l…
Localized modes in one dimensional topological systems, such as Majonara modes in topological superconductors, are promising platforms for robust information processing. In one dimensional topological insulators, mobile topological solitons are expected but have not been fully realized yet. We discover fractionalized phase defects moving along trimer silicon atomic chains formed along step edges of a vicinal silicon surface. Tunneling microscopy identifies local defects with phase shifts of 2π/3 and 4π/3 with their electronic states within the band gap and with their motions activated above 10…
The self-assembly of submonolayer amounts of Au on the densely stepped Si(553) surface creates an array of closely spaced \atomic wires" separated by 1.5 nm. At low temperature, charge transfer between the terraces and the row of silicon dangling bonds at the step edges leads to a charge-ordered state within the row of dangling bonds with x3 periodicity. Interactions between the dangling bonds lead to their ordering into a fully two-dimensional (2D) array with centered registry between adjacent steps. We show that as the temperature is raised, soliton defects are created within each step edge.…
Matter in nontrivial topological phase possesses unique properties, such as support of unidirectional edge modes on its interface. It is the existence of such modes which is responsible for the wonderful properties of a topological insulator -- material which is insulating in the bulk but conducting on its surface, along with many of its recently proposed photonic and polaritonic analogues. We show that exciton-polariton fluid in a nontrivial topological phase in kagome lattice, supports nonlinear excitations in the form of solitons built up from wavepackets of topological edge modes -- topolo…
The magnetoelectric effect predicted in topological insulators makes heterostructures that combine magnetic materials and such insulators promising candidates for spintronics applications. Here, we theoretically consider a setup that exhibits two well-separated interfaces between a topological insulator and a ferromagnetic insulator. We show that there is a topological magnetic dipole-dipole interaction stemming from long-range Coulomb interactions. We analytically derive the magnetization dynamics at the two interfaces and discuss how the long-range coupling can be applied to non-locally indu…
Higher order topological superconductors hosting Majorana-Kramers pairs (MKPs) as corner modes have recently been proposed in a two-dimensional (2D) quantum spin Hall insulator (QSHI) proximity-coupled to unconventional cuprate or iron-based superconductors. Here, we show that such MKPs can be realized using a conventional s-wave superfluid with a soliton in cold atom systems governed by the Hubbard-Hofstadter model. The MKPs emerge in the presence of interaction at the "corners" defined by the intersections of line solitons and the one-dimensional edges of the system. Our scheme is based on t…
We study continuations of topological edge states in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with on-site cubic (Kerr) nonlinearity, which is a 1D nonlinear photonic topological insulator (TI). Based on the topology of the underlying spatial dynamical system, we establish the existence of nonlinear edge states (edge solitons) for all positive energies in the topological band gap. We discover that these edge solitons are stable at any energy when the ratio between the weak and strong couplings is below a critical value. Above the critical coupling ratio, there are energy intervals where the edge soliton…
Based on $k\cdot p$ analysis and realistic tight-binding calculations, we find that time-reversal-breaking Weyl semimetals can be realized in magnetically-doped (Mn, Eu, Cr etc.) Sn$_{1-x}$Pb$_x$(Te,Se) class of topological crystalline insulators. All the Weyl points are well separated in momentum space and possess nearly the same energy due to high crystalline symmetry. Moreover, both the Weyl points and Fermi arcs are highly tunable by varying Pb/Sn composition, pressure, magnetization, temperature, surface potential etc., opening up the possibility of manipulating Weyl points and rewiring t…
Majorana bound states are interesting candidates for applications in topological quantum computation. Low energy models allowing to grasp their properties are hence conceptually important. The usual scenario in these models is that two relevant gapped phases, separated by a gapless point, exist. In one of the phases, topological boundary states are absent, while the other one supports Majorana bound states. We show that a customary model violates this paradigm. The phase that should not host Majorana fermions supports a fractional soliton exponentially localized at only one end. By varying the…
