Majorana bound states are interesting candidates for applications in topological quantum computation. Low energy models allowing to grasp their properties are hence conceptually important. The usual scenario in these models is that two relevant gapped phases, separated by a gapless point, exist. In one of the phases, topological boundary states are absent, while the other one supports Majorana bound states. We show that a customary model violates this paradigm. The phase that should not host Majorana fermions supports a fractional soliton exponentially localized at only one end. By varying the parameters of the model, we describe analytically the transition between the fractional soliton and two Majorana fermions. Moreover, we provide a possible physical implementation of the model. We further characterize the symmetry of the superconducting pairing, showing that the odd-frequency component is intimately related to the spatial profile of the Majorana wavefunctions.
Coupling Majorana qubits with other qubits is an absolute essential in storing, manipulating and transferring informations for topological quantum computing. We theoretically propose a manner to coupling Majorana qubits with solitons, another kind of topological impurities, which was first studied in the spinless Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model. We presents a NOT operation on the Majorana qubit with moving the complementary soliton through heterostructure adiabatically. Based on these two topological impurities, the operation is robust against local disorder. Furthermore, we find that the sol…
Higher order topological superconductors hosting Majorana-Kramers pairs (MKPs) as corner modes have recently been proposed in a two-dimensional (2D) quantum spin Hall insulator (QSHI) proximity-coupled to unconventional cuprate or iron-based superconductors. Here, we show that such MKPs can be realized using a conventional s-wave superfluid with a soliton in cold atom systems governed by the Hubbard-Hofstadter model. The MKPs emerge in the presence of interaction at the "corners" defined by the intersections of line solitons and the one-dimensional edges of the system. Our scheme is based on t…
Recently, much research has been dedicated to understanding topological superconductivity and Majorana zero modes induced by a magnetic field in hybrid proximity structures. This paper proposes a realization of topological superconductivity in a short Josephson junction at an edge of a 2D topological insulator subject to a perpendicular magnetic field. The magnetic field effect is entirely orbital, coming from a gradient of the order parameter phase at the edge, which results in a soliton defect at the junction with a pair of gapless Andreev bound states. The latter are reducible to Majorana z…
We consider one-dimensional topological insulators hosting fractionally charged midgap states in the presence and absence of induced superconductivity pairing. Under the protection of a discrete symmetry, relating positive and negative energy states, the solitonic midgap states remain pinned at zero energy when superconducting correlations are induced by proximity effect. When the superconducting pairing dominates the initial insulating gap, Majorana fermion phases develop for a class of insulators. As a concrete example, we study the Creutz model with induced s-wave superconductivity and repu…
Entanglement in quantum mechanics contradicts local realism, and is a manifestation of quantum non-locality. Its presence can be detected through the violation of Bell, or CHSH inequalities. Paradigmatic quantum systems provide examples of both, non-entangled and entangled states. Here we consider a minimal complexity setup consisting of 6 Majorana bound states. We find that any allowed state in the degenerate Majorana space is non-locally entangled. We show how to measure (with available techniques) the CHSH-violating correlations, using either intermediate strength or weak measurement protoc…
We study theoretically a one-dimensional dimerized Kitaev superconductor model which belongs to BDI class with time-reversal, particle-hole, and chiral symmetries. There are two sources of the particle-hole symmetry, i.e., the sublattice symmetry and superconductivity. Accordingly, we define two types of topological numbers with respect to the chiral indices of normal and Majorana fermions, which offers an ideal laboratory to examine the interference between the two different physics within the same symmetry class. Phase diagram, zero-energy bound states, and conductance at normal metal/superc…
In recent years there has been an intensive search for Majorana fermion states in condensed matter systems. Predicted to be localized on cores of vortices in certain non-conventional superconductors, their presence is known to render the exchange statistics of bulk vortices non-Abelian. Here we study the equations governing the dynamics of phase solitons (fluxons) in a long Josephson junction in a topological superconductor. We show that the fluxon will bind a localized zero energy Majorana mode and will consequently behave as a non-Abelian anyon. The low mass of the fluxon, as well as its exp…
In this Tutorial, we give a pedagogical introduction to Majorana bound states (MBSs) arising in semiconducting nanostructures. We start by briefly reviewing the well-known Kitaev chain toy model in order to introduce some of the basic properties of MBSs before proceeding to describe more experimentally relevant platforms. Here, our focus lies on simple `minimal' models where the Majorana wave functions can be obtained explicitly by standard methods. In a first part, we review the paradigmatic model of a Rashba nanowire with strong spin-orbit interaction (SOI) placed in a magnetic field and pro…
Semiconductors in the proximity of superconductors have been proposed to support phases hosting Majorana bound states. When the systems undergo a topological phase transition towards the Majorana phase, the spectral gap closes, then reopens, and the quasiparticle band spin polarization is inverted. We focus on two paradigmatic semiconductor-superconductor heterostructures and propose an all-electrical spectroscopic probe sensitive to the spin inversion at the topological transition. Our proposal relies on the indirect coupling of a time-dependent electric field to the electronic spin due to th…
Majorana fermions subject to the non-Abelian braid group are believed to be the basic ingredients of future topological quantum computations. In this work, we propose to simulate Majorana fermions of the Kitaev model in electric circuits based on the observation that the circuit Laplacian can be made identical to the Hamiltonian. A set of AC voltages along the chain plays a role of the wave function. We generate an arbitrary number of topological segments in a Kitaev chain. A pair of topological edge states emerge at the edges of a topological segment. Its wave function is observable by the po…
Motivated by recent experiments searching for Majorana zero modes in tripartite semiconductor nanowires with epitaxial superconductor and ferromagnetic-insulator layers, we explore the emergence of topological superconductivity in such devices for paradigmatic arrangements of the three constituents. Accounting for the competition between magnetism and superconductivity, we treat superconductivity self consistently and describe the electronic properties, including the superconducting and ferromagnetic proximity effects, within a direct wave-function approach. We conclude that the most viable me…
Paradigmatic knotted solitons, Hopfions, that are characterized by topological Hopf invariant, are widely investigated in the diverse areas ranging from high energy physics, cosmology and astrophysics to biology, magneto- and hydrodynamics and condensed matter physics. Yet, while holding high promise for applications, they remain elusive and under-explored. Here we demonstrate that Hopfions emerge as a basic configuration of polarization field in confined ferroelectric nanoparticles. Our findings establish that Hopfions govern a wealth of novel functionalities in the electromagnetic response o…

We study the Majorana surface states of higher-spin topological superconductors (TSCs) that could be realized in ultracold atomic systems or doped semimetals with spin-orbit coupling. As a paradigmatic example, we consider a model with p-wave pairing of spin-3/2 fermions that generalizes ${}^3\text{He-}B$. This model has coexisting linear and cubic dispersing Majorana surface bands. We show that these are unstable to interactions, which can generate a spontaneous surface thermal quantum Hall effect (TQHE). By contrast, nonmagnetic quenched disorder induces a surface conformal field theory (CFT…
The search for topological superconductors has recently become a key issue in condensed matter physics, because of their possible relevance to provide a platform for Majorana bound states, non-Abelian statistics, and fault-tolerant quantum computing. We propose a new scheme which links as directly as possible the experimental search to a material-based microscopic theory for topological superconductivity. For this, the analysis of scanning tunneling microscopy, which typically uses a phenomenological ansatz for the superconductor gap functions, is elevated to a theory, where a multi-orbital fu…
We investigate Josephson currents in mesoscopic rings with a weak link which are in or near a topological superconducting phase. As a paradigmatic example, we consider the Kitaev model of a spinless p-wave superconductor in one dimension, emphasizing how this model emerges from more realistic settings based on semiconductor nanowires. We show that the flux periodicity of the Josephson current provides signatures of the topological phase transition and the emergence of Majorana fermions situated on both sides of the weak link even when fermion parity is not a good quantum number. In large rings…
Two-dimensional topological superconductivity has attracted great interest due to the emergence of Majorana modes bound to vortices and propagating along edges. However, due to its rare appearance in natural compounds, experimental realizations rely on a delicate artificial engineering involving materials with helical states, magnetic fields and conventional superconductors. Here we introduce an alternative path using a class of three-dimensional antiferromagnet to engineer a two- dimensional topological superconductor. Our proposal exploits the appearance of solitonic states at the interface …
Topological excitations in many-body systems are one of the paradigmatic cornerstones of modern condensed matter physics. In particular, parafermions are elusive fractional excitations potentially emerging in fractional quantum Hall-superconductor junctions, and represent one of the major milestones in fractional quantum matter. Here, by using a combination of tensor network and kernel polynomial techniques, we demonstrate the emergence of zero modes and finite energy excitations in many-body parafermion chains. We show the appearance of zero energy modes in the many-body spectral function at …
Josephson junctions in two-dimensional topological insulators with embedded magnetic domains can host a number of topological phases, in particular, Jackiw-Rebbi solitons and Majorana zero modes. These different non-trivial phases appear in such junctions for multiple-domain magnetic islands, showing a rich multi-gap structure. Features related to the interplay between superconductivity and magnetism in these systems cannot be easily discerned looking at behavior of the Andreev spectrum and the concomitant dc Josephson effect. Instead, the thermal conductance is very sensitive to the nature of…
Topological phases of matter have been used as a fertile realm of intensive discussions about fermionic fractionalization. In this work, we study the effects of anisotropic superconducting correlations in the fermionic fractionalization on the topological phases. We consider a hybrid version of the SSH and Kitaev models with an anisotropic superconducting order parameter to investigate the unusual states with zero energy that emerges in a finite chain. To obtain these zero energy solutions, we built a chain with a well-defined domain wall at the middle of the chain. Our solutions indicate an i…
We study the quench dynamics of a topologically trivial one-dimensional gapless wire following its sudden coupling to topological bound states. We find that as the bound states leak into and propagate through the wire, signatures of their topological nature survive and remain measurable over a long lifetime. Thus, the quench dynamically induces topological properties in the gapless wire. Specifically, we study a gapless wire coupled to fractionally charged solitons or Majorana fermions and characterize the dynamically induced topology in the wire, in the presence of disorder and short-range in…
Fractionalization is a phenomenon in which strong interactions in a quantum system drive the emergence of excitations with quantum numbers that are absent in the building blocks. Outstanding examples are excitations with charge e/3 in the fractional quantum Hall effect, solitons in one-dimensional conducting polymers and Majorana states in topological superconductors. Fractionalization is also predicted to manifest itself in low-dimensional quantum magnets, such as one-dimensional antiferromagnetic S = 1 chains. The fundamental features of this system are gapped excitations in the bulk and, re…
