Collapsing process is studied in special type of inhomogeneous spherically symmetric space-time model (known as IFRW model), having no time-like Killing vector field. The matter field for collapse dynamics is considered to be perfect fluid with anisotropic pressure. The main issue of the present investigation is to examine whether the end state of the collapse to be a naked singularity or a black hole. Finally, null geodesics is studied near the singularity.
We consider inhomogeneous viscous fluids in flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe. We analyze different kinds of such fluids and investigate the possibility to reproduce the current cosmic acceleration providing a different future evolution with respect to the Cosmological Constant case. In particular, we study the presence of finite-future time singularities. We also discuss a general class of "integrable" viscous fluid models whose bulk viscosities obey to a common differential equation.
We give a brief review of some aspects of inhomogeneous viscous fluids in a flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker Universe. In general, it is pointed out that several fluid models may bring the future Universe evolution to become singular, with the appearance of the so-called Big Rip scenario. We investigate the effects of fluids coupled with dark matter in a de Sitter Universe, by considering several cases. Due to this coupling, the coincidence problem may be solved, and if the de Sitter solution is stable, the model is also protected against the Big Rip singularity.
A dark Friedman-Robertson-Walker fluid governed by a non-linear inhomogeneous equation of state is considered which can be viewed as a conveniently simple paradigm for a whole class of models which exhibit phase transitions from a non-phantom towards a phantom era (superacceleration transition). From another side, such dark fluid models may describe also quintessence-like cosmic acceleration. Thermodynamical considerations for the processes involved, which are of great importance in the characterization of the global evolution of the corresponding universe, are given too. Connecting the propos…
Specific dark energy models with linear inhomogeneous time-dependent equation of state, within the framework of 4d Friedman-Robertson-Walker (FRW) cosmology, are investigated. It is demonstrated that the choice of such 4d inhomogeneous fluid models may lead to a brane FRW cosmology without any explicit account of higher dimensions at all. Effectively, we thus obtain a brane dark energy universe without introducing the brane concept explicitly. Several examples of brane Rip cosmology arising from 4d inhomogeneous dark fluid models are given.
Isotropic inhomogeneous dust universes are analysed via observational coordinates based on the past light cones of the observer's galactic worldline. The field equations are reduced to a single first--order {\sc ode} in observational variables on the past light cone, completing the observational integration scheme. This leads naturally to an explicit exact solution which is locally nearly homogeneous (i.e. {\sc frw}), but at larger redshift develops inhomogeneity. New observational characterisations of homogeneity ({\sc frw} universes) are also given.
A cosmological model with an inhomogeneous viscous dark fluid coupled with dark matter in a flat Friedman-Robertson-Walker universe is investigated. The influence of dark matter on the behavior of an inhomogeneous viscous fluid of this kind, responsible for cosmic acceleration and for the appearance of different types of singularities, is analyzed in detail. In particular, the critical points corresponding to the solutions of the background equations in a useful approximation are obtained explicitly.
We develop approximation methods in the hybrid quantization of the Gowdy model with linear polarization and a massless scalar field, for the case of three-torus spatial topology. The loop quantization of the homogeneous gravitational sector of the Gowdy model (according to the improved dynamics prescription) and the presence of inhomogeneities lead to a very complicated Hamiltonian constraint. Therefore, the extraction of physical results calls for the introduction of well justified approximations. We first show how to approximate the homogeneous part of the Hamiltonian constraint, correspondi…
We derive a Cardy-Verlinde-like formula which relates the entropy of the closed FRW universe to its energy, and Casimir energy, for a multicomponent coupled fluid. The generalized fluid obeys an inhomogeneous equation of state. A viscous dark fluid is included, and we include also modified gravity using its fluid representation. It is demonstrated how such an expression reduces to the standard Cardy-Verlinde formula corresponding to the 2d CFT entropy only in some special cases. The dynamical entropy bound for a closed FRW universe with dark components is obtained. The universality of the dyna…
We apply a hybrid approach which combines loop and Fock quantizations to fully quantize the linearly polarized Gowdy $T^3$ model in the presence of a massless scalar field with the same symmetries as the metric. Like in the absence of matter content, the application of loop techniques leads to a quantum resolution of the classical cosmological singularity. Most importantly, thanks to the inclusion of matter, the homogeneous sector of the model contains flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) solutions, which are not allowed in vacuo. Therefore, this model provides a simple setting to study at th…
We construct approximate solutions of the hybrid quantum Gowdy cosmology with three-torus topology, linear polarization, and local rotational symmetry, in the presence of a massless scalar field. More specifically, we determine some families of states for which the complicated inhomogeneous and anisotropic Hamiltonian constraint operator of the Gowdy model is approximated by a much simpler one. Our quantum states follow the dynamics governed by this simpler constraint, while being at the same time also approximate solutions of the full Gowdy model. This is so thanks to the quantum correlations…
We investigate the occurrence and nature of a naked singularity in the gravitational collapse of an inhomogeneous dust cloud described by higher dimensional Tolman-Bondi space-time. The naked singularities are found to be gravitationally strong.
We have constructed a spherically symmetric structure model in a cosmological background filled with perfect fluid with non-vanishing pressure as an exact solution of Einstein equations using the Lemaître solution. To study its local and quasi-local characteristics including the novel features of its central black hole, we have suggested an algorithm to integrate the equations numerically. The result shows intriguing effects of the pressure inside the structure. The evolution of the central black hole within the FRW universe, its decoupling from the expanding parts of the model, the structure …
We address the problem of stitching together the vacuum, static, planar-symmetric Taub spacetime and the flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmology using the Israel thin-shell formalism. The joining of Taub and FRW spacetimes is reminiscent of the Oppenheimer-Snyder collapse used in modeling the formation of a singularity from a collapsing spherical ball of dust. A possible mechanism for the formation of a planar singularity is provided. It is hoped that tackling such example will improve our intuition on planar-symmetric systems in Einstein's general relativity.
A scenario of an emergent universe is constructed in the background of an inhomogeneous space-time model which is asymptotically (at spatial infinity) FRW space-time. The cosmic substratum consists of non-interacting two components, namely {\bf a)} homogeneous and isotropic fluid but dissipative in nature and {\bf b)} an inhomogeneous and anisotropic barotropic fluid. In non-equilibrium thermodynamic prescription (second order deviations), particle creation mechanism is considered the cause for the dissipative phenomena. It is found that for constant value of the particle creation rate paramet…
We examine the gravitational collapse of spherically symmetric inhomogeneous dust in (2+1) dimensions, with cosmological constant. We obtain the analytical expressions for the interior metric. We match the solution to a vacuum exterior. We discuss the nature of the singularity formed by analyzing the outgoing radial null geodesics. We examine the formation of trapped surfaces during the collapse.
We investigate the occurrence and nature of a naked singularity in the gravitational collapse of an inhomogeneous dust cloud described by higher dimensional Tolman-Bondi space-times. The naked singularities are found to be gravitationally strong in the sense of Tipler. Higher dimensions seem to favour black holes rather than naked singularities.
We look at a gas of dust and investigate how its entropy evolves with time under a spherically symmetric gravitational collapse. We treat the problem perturbatively and find that the classical thermodynamic entropy does actually increase to first order when one allows for gravitational potential energy to be transferred to thermal energy during the collapse. Thus, in this situation there is no need to resort to the introduction of an intrinsic gravitational entropy in order to satisfy the second law of thermodynamics.
We investigate the occurrence and nature of a naked singularity in the gravitational collapse of an inhomogeneous dust cloud described by a self-similar higher dimensional Tolman-Bondi space-time. Bound, marginally bound and unbound space-times are analyzed. The degree of inhomogeneity of the collapsing matter necessary to form a naked singularity is given.
Magnetic fields have been found to have an inherent capability of acting against gravity. An important question posed in the literature is whether presence of a magnetic field can alter the dynamics of a gravitational collapse and prevent the final formation of a singularity. Inhomogeneous models of collapse have not been explored significantly in this context. In the present work we investigate the role of magnetic fields in the evolution of inhomogeneous cylindrically symmetric models. We use an approach based on the Raychaudhuri equation for such an analysis. We show that it is quite possib…
We investigate the occurrence and nature of a naked singularity in the gravitational collapse of an inhomogeneous dust cloud described by a non self-similar higher dimensional Tolman spacetime. The necessary condition for the formation of a naked singularity or a black hole is obtained. The naked singularities are found to be gravitationally strong in the sense of Tipler and provide another example that violates the cosmic censorship conjecture.
The present paper deals with the gravitational collapse of an inhomogeneous spherical star consisting of dust fluid in the background of dark energy components with linear equation of state. We discussed the development of apparent horizon to investigate the black-hole formation in gravitational collapsing process. The collapsing process is examined first separately for dust cloud and dark energy and then under the combined effect of dust interacting with dark energy. It is obtained that when only dust cloud or dark energy is present the collapse leads to the formation of black-hole under cert…
Within the Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi formalism for gravitational collapse of inhomogeneous dust we analyze the parameter space that leads to the formation of a globally covered singularity (i.e. a black hole) when some physically reasonable requirements are imposed (namely positive radially decreasing and quadratic profile for the energy density and avoidance of shell crossing singularities). It turns out that a black hole can occur as the endstate of collapse only if the singularity is simultaneous as in the standard Oppenheimer-Snyder scenario. Given a fixed density profile then there is one vel…
We examine here the relevance of the initial state of a collapsing dust cloud towards determining it's final fate in the course of a continuing gravitational collapse. It is shown that given any arbitrary matter distribution $M(r)$ for the cloud at the initial epoch, there is always a freedom to choose rest of the initial data, namely the initial velocities of the collapsing spherical shells, so that the collapse could result either in a black hole or a naked singularity depending on this choice. Thus, given the initial density profile, to achieve the desired end state of the gravitational col…
We investigate a class of cylindrically symmetric inhomogeneous $Λ$-dust spacetimes which have a regular axis and some zero expansion component. For $Λ\ne 0$, we obtain new exact solutions to the Einstein equations and show that they are unique, within that class. For $Λ=0$, we recover the Senovilla-Vera metric and show that it can be locally matched to an Einstein-Rosen type of exterior. Finally, we explore some consequences of the matching, such as trapped surface formation and gravitational radiation in the exterior.
We consider a Lemaitre - Tolman - Bondi type space-time in Einstein gravity with the Gauss-Bonnet combination of quadratic curvature terms, and present exact solution in closed form. It turns out that the presence of the coupling constant of the Gauss-Bonnet terms alpha > 0 completely changes the causal structure of the singularities from the analogous general relativistic case. The gravitational collapse of inhomogeneous dust in the five-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet extended Einstein equations leads to formation of a massive, but weak, timelike singularity which is forbidden in general relativity…
This paper is about the $n+2$-dimensional gravitational contraction of inhomogeneous fluid without heat flux in the framework of $f(R)$ metric theory of gravity. Matching conditions for two regions of a star has been derived by using the Darmois junction conditions. For the analytic solution of equations of motion in modified $f(R)$ theory of gravity, we have taken scalar curvature as constant. Hence final result of gravitational collapse in this frame work is the existence of black hole and cosmological horizons, both of these form earlier than singularity. It has been shown that constant cur…
We study the complete gravitational collapse of a class of spherically symmetric inhomogeneous perfect fluid models obtained by introducing small radial perturbations in an otherwise homogeneous matter cloud. Our aim here is to study the genericity and stability of the formation of black holes and locally naked singularities in collapse. While the occurrence of naked singularities is known for many models of collapse, the key issue now in focus is genericity and stability of these outcomes. Towards this purpose, we study how the introduction of a somewhat general class of small inhomogeneities…
We study here the structure of singularity forming in gravitational collapse of spherically symmetric inhomogeneous dust. Such a collapse is described by the Tolman-Bondi-Lema{î}tre metric, which is a two-parameter family of solutions to Einstein equations, characterized by two free functions of the radial coordinate, namely the `mass function' F(r) and the `energy function' f(r). The main new result here relates, in a general way, the formation of black holes and naked shell-focusing singularities resulting as the final fate of such a collapse to the generic form of regular initial data. Such…
Further to results in [9], pointing out the role of initial density and velocity distributions towards determining the final outcome of spherical dust collapse, the causal structure of singularity is examined here in terms of evolution of the apparent horizon. We also bring out several related features which throw some useful light towards understanding the nature of this singularity, including the behaviour of geodesic families coming out and some aspects related to the stability of singularity.

The dynamical behaviors of FRW Universe containing a posivive/negative potential scalar field in loop quantum cosmology scenario are discussed. The method of the phase-plane analysis is used to investigate the stability of the Universe. It is found that the stability properties in this situation are quite different from the classical cosmology case. For a positive potential scalar field coupled with a barotropic fluid, the cosmological autonomous system has five fixed points and one of them is stable if the adiabatic index $γ$ satisfies $0<γ<2$. This leads to the fact that the universe just ha…
This paper investigates the evolution of collapsing FRW models with a scalar field having the potential which arises in the conformal frame of high order gravity theories, coupled to matter described by a perfect fluid with energy density $ρ$ and pressure $p$, obeying a barotropic equation of state. The solutions are shown to evolve generically to a singular state in a finite time and they are used as sources for radiating objects undergoing complete gravitational collapse. Although these singularities may be naked in some special case, it is shown that generically a black hole forms.
A new model is proposed to a collapsing star consisting of an initial inhomogeneous energy density and anisotropic pressure fluid with shear, radial heat flow and outgoing radiation. In previous papers one of us has always assumed an initial star with homogeneous energy density. The aim of this work is to generalize the previous models by introducing an initial inhomogeneous energy density and compare it to the initial homogeneous energy density collapse model. We will show the differences between these models in the evolution of all physical quantities that characterizes the gravitational col…
We study here the evolution of a massless scalar field in a spacetime, developing from a regular initial spacelike surface. The Einstein equations and regularity and boundary conditions governing the same are specified. Both homogeneous and inhomogeneous collapse models are considered and we analyze when the occurrence of singularity will be simultaneous or otherwise. In the inhomogeneous collapse case, we characterize a wide family of black hole solutions arising in scalar field collapse. We also discuss the possibility of existence of classes of non-singular models where collapse could almos…
We investigate the occurrence and nature of naked singularity for the inhomogeneous gravitational collapse of Tolman-Bondi dust clouds. It is shown that the naked singularities form at the center of the collapsing cloud in a wide class of collapse models which includes the earlier cases considered by Eardley and Smarr and Christodoulou. This class also contains self-similar as well as non-self-similar models. The structure and strength of this singularity is examined and the question is investigated as to when a non-zero measure set of non-spacelike trajectories could be emitted from the singul…
In a previous paper, some of us studied general relativistic homogeneous gravitational collapses for dust and radiation, in which the density profile was replaced by an effective density justified by some quantum gravity models. It was found that the effective density introduces an effective pressure that becomes negative and dominant in the strong-field regime. With this set-up, the central singularity is replaced by a bounce, after which the cloud starts expanding. Motivated by the fact that in the classical case homogeneous and inhomogeneous collapse models have different properties, here w…
We examine the role of space-time geometry in the non-adiabatic collapse of a star dissipating energy in the form of radial heat flow, studying its evolution under different initial conditions. The collapse of a star with interior comprising of a homogeneous perfect fluid is compared with that of a star filled with inhomogeneous imperfect fluid with anisotropic pressure. Both the configurations are spherically symmetric, however, in the latter case, the physical space $t= constant$ of the configurations is assumed to be inhomogeneous endowed with spheroidal or pseudo-spheroidal geometry. It is…
We consider a spherical gravitational collapse of inhomogeneous dust (and null dust) in Einstein gravity with the Gauss-Bonnet (GB) combination of quadratic curvature terms. It turns out that the presence of the coupling constant of the GB terms $α> 0$ completely changes the causal structure of the singularities from the analogous general relativistic case. The gravitational collapse of inhomogeneous dust in the five-dimensional GB extended Einstein equations leads to formation of a massive, but weak, timelike singularity which is forbidden in general relativity. The apparent horizons of two d…
We consider the evaporation of the (shell focusing) naked singularity formed during the self-similar collapse of a marginally bound inhomogeneous dust cloud, in the geometric optics approximation. We show that, neglecting the back reaction of the spacetime, the radiation on $\scrip$ tends to infinity as the Cauchy Horizon is approached. Two consequences can be expected from this result: (a) that the back reaction of spacetime will be large and eventually halt the formation of a naked singularity thus preserving the Cosmic Censorship Hypothesis and (b) matter attempting to collapse into a naked…
By considering families of radial null geodesics, we study the subsets of initial data that lead to naked singularities and black holes in inhomogeneous spherical dust collapse. We introduce the notion of central homogeneity for spherical dust collapse and prove that for the occurrence of naked singularities, the initial data set must in general be centrally homogeneous. Even though mathematically this indicates that naked singularities are in general unstable, we show that centrally inhomogeneous perturbations in the initial data are not physically reasonable. This provides an example of the …
General relativity (GR) characterizes gravity as a geometric properly exhibited as curvature on spacetime. Teleprallelism describes gravity through torsional properties, and can reproduce GR at the level of equations. Similar to f(R) gravity, on taking a generalization, f(T) gravity can produce various modifications its gravitational mechanism. The resulting field equations are inherently distinct to f(R) gravity in that they are second order. In the present work, f(T) gravity is examined in the cosmological context with a number of solutions reconstructed by means of an auxiliary scalar field…
We study the tachyon scalar field model in flat FRW cosmology with the particular potential $ϕ^{-2}$ and the scale factor behavior $a(t)=t^n$. We consider the spherical collapse model and investigate the effects of the tachyon scalar field on the structure formation in flat FRW universe. We calculate $δ_{c}(z_{c})$, $λ(z_{c})$, $ξ(z_{c})$, $Δ_{V}(z_{c})$, $\log [νf(ν)]$ and $\log [n(k)]$ for the tachyon scalar field model and compare the results with the results of EdS model and $ΛCDM$ model. It is shown that in the tachyon scalar field model the structure formation may occur earlier, in compa…
We study gravitational collapse of a spherically symmetric inhomogeneous dust cloud in the Lovelock theory without cosmological constant. We show that the final fate of gravitational collapse in this theory depends on the spacetime dimensions. In odd dimensions the naked singularities formed are found to be massive. In the even dimensions,on the other hand, the naked singularities are found to be massless. We also show that the curvature strength of naked singularity is independent of the spacetime dimensions in odd dimensions. However, it depends on the spacetime dimensions in even dimension.
We investigate the end state of the gravitational collapse of an inhomogeneous dust cloud in higher dimensional space-time. The naked singularities are shown to be developing as the final outcome of non-marginally bound collapse. The naked singularities are found to be gravitationally strong in the sense of Tipler .
We consider here the gravitational collapse of a spherically symmetric inhomogeneous dust cloud described by the Tolman-Bondi models. By studying a general class of these models, we find that the end state of the collapse is either a black hole or a naked singularity, depending on the parameters of the initial density distribution, which are $ρ_{c}$, the initial central density of the massive body, and $R_0$, the initial boundary. The collapse ends in a black hole if the dimensionless quantity $β$ constructed out of this initial data is greater than 0.0113, and it ends in a naked singularity i…
We describe a simple method of determining whether the singularity that forms in the spherically symmetric collapse of inhomogeneous dust is naked or covered. This derivation considerably simplifies the analysis given in the earlier literature, while giving the same results as have been obtained before.
In the case of barotropic FRW cosmologies, the Hubble parameter in conformal time is the solution of a simple Riccati equation of constant coefficients. We consider these cosmologies in the framework of nonrelativistic supersymmetry that has been effective in the area of supersymmetric quantum mechanics. Recalling that Faraoni [Amer. J. Phys. 67 (1999), 732-734] showed how to reduce the barotropic FRW system of differential equations to simple harmonic oscillator differential equations, we set the latter equations in the supersymmetric approach and divide their solutions into two classes of 'b…
We investigate here the locally naked singularity formed due to a spherically symmetric inhomogeneous collapsing cloud having non-zero isotropic pressure, in terms of its strength. Sufficient condition provided by Clarke and Krolak for it to be Tipler strong has been used to restrict the parameters that represent the non-linear relation between the physical radius and the radial coordinate of the outgoing radial null geodesic at the singular center. Studying end state of a collapsing cloud requires information about the dynamics of collapse, which is unknown in a general scenario. Hence we stu…
A spherically symmetric comoving fluid solution of Einstein's equations is adapted for cosmological application by extending the geometry of standard FRW cosmology using a generalised curvature term. The resulting model retains many of the known cosmological properties including homogeneity of energy density, its relationship with internal pressure including equations of state, although in each case they have a generalised structure. It is shown that the adapted model does not require the inclusion of the arbitrary cosmological constant and the vacuum energy solution is discussed in its absenc…
In the present work, gravitational collapse of an inhomogeneous spherical star model, consisting of inhomogeneous dust fluid (dark matter) in the background of dark energy is considered. The collapsing process is examined first separately for both dark matter and dark energy and then under the combined effect of dark matter and dark energy with or without interaction. The dark energy is considered in the form of perfect fluid and both marginally and non-marginally bound cases are considered for the collapsing model. Finally dark energy in the form of anisotropic fluid is investigated and it is…
Spherically symmetric inhomogeneous dust collapse has been studied in higher dimensional space-time and appearance of naked singularity has been analyzed both for non-marginal and marginally bound cases. It has been shown that naked singularity is possible for any arbitrary dimension in non-marginally bound case. For marginally bound case we have examined the radial null geodesics from the singularity and found that naked singularity is possible upto five dimension.
A large family of inhomogeneous non-static spherically symmetric solutions of the Einstein equation for null fluid in higher dimensions has been obtained. It encompasses higher dimensional versions of many previously known solutions such as Vaidya, charged Vaidya and Husain solutions and also some new solutions representing global monopole or string dust. It turns out that physical properties of the solutions carry over to higher dimensions.
We investigate the evolution of non-adiabatic collapse of a shear-free spherically symmetric stellar configuration with anisotropic stresses accompanied with radial heat flux. The collapse begins from a curvature singularity with infinite mass and size on an inhomogeneous space-time background. The collapse is found to proceed without formation of an even horizon to singularity when the collapsing configuration radiates all its mass energy. The impact of inhomogeneity on various parameters of the collapsing stellar configuration is examined in some specific space-time backgrounds.
This note discusses possible quantum effects in the context of homogeneous flat FLRW and inhomogeneous LTB gravitational spherical collapse, which lead to bounce solutions.
Cosmological consequences of the nonsymmetric gravitational theory (NGT) are studied. The structure of the NGT field equations is analyzed for an inhomogeneous and anisotropic universe, based on the spherically symmetric field equations. It is assumed that the matter density and pressure are purely time dependent, and it is shown that the field equations allow open, flat and closed universes. The field equations are expanded about the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) model for a small antisymmetric field. The observations are most in accord with the approximately spatially flat universe, which…
We investigate the gravitational collapse of a spherically symmetric, inhomogeneous star, which is described by a perfect fluid with heat flow and satisfies the equation of state $p=ρ/3$ or $p=Cρ^\ga$ at its center. Different from the ordinary process of gravitational collapsing, the energy of the whole star is emitted into space. And the remaining spacetime is a Minkowski one at the end of the process.
The final state--black hole or naked singularity--of the gravitational collapse of a marginally bound matter configuration in the presence of tangential stresses is classified, in full generality, in terms of the initial data and equation of state. If the tangential pressure is sufficiently strong, configurations that would otherwise evolve to a spacelike singularity, result in a locally naked singularity, both in the homogeneous and in the general, inhomogeneous density case.
