Attosecond nonlinear Fourier transform (NFT) pump probe spectroscopy is an experimental technique which allows investigation of the electronic excitation, ionization, and unimolecular dissociation processes. The NFT spectroscopy utilizes ultrafast multiphoton ionization in the extreme ultraviolet spectral range and detects the dissociation products of the unstable ionized species. In this paper, a quantum mechanical description of NFT spectra is suggested, which is based on the second order perturbation theory in molecule-light interaction and the high level ab initio calculations of CO2 and CO2+ in the Franck-Condon zone. The calculations capture the characteristic features of the available experimental NFT spectra of CO2. Approximate analytic expressions are derived and used to assign the calculated spectra in terms of participating electronic states and harmonic photon frequencies. The developed approach provides a convenient framework within which the origin and the significance of near harmonic and non-harmonic NFT spectral lines can be analyzed. The framework is scalable and the spectra of di- and triatomic species as well as the dependences on the control parameters can by predicted semi-quantitatively.
We present a comprehensive study of the abundance of carbon dioxide in exoplanetary atmospheres in hot, hydrogen-dominated atmospheres. We construct novel analytical models of systems in chemical equilibrium that include carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, water, methane and acetylene and relate the equilibrium constants of the chemical reactions to temperature and pressure via the tabulated Gibbs free energies. We prove that such chemical systems may be described by a quintic equation for the mixing ratio of methane. By examining the abundances of these molecules across a broad range of temperat…

We investigate the effect of pressure, temperature and acidity on the composition of water-rich carbon-bearing fluids at thermodynamic conditions that correspond to the Earth's deep Crust and Upper Mantle. Our first-principles molecular dynamics simulations provide mechanistic insight into the hydration shell of carbon dioxide, bicarbonate and carbonate ions, and on the pathways of the acid/base reactions that convert these carbon species into one another in aqueous solutions. At temperature of 1000 K and higher our simulations can sample the chemical equilibrium of these acid/base reactions, …
Molecular dynamics predictions of transport properties for carbon dioxide hydrates under pre-nucleation conditions using TIP4P/Ice water and EPM2, TraPPE, and Zhang carbon dioxide potentials
Laser pulses with stable electric field waveforms establish the opportunity to achieve coherent control on attosecond timescales. We present experimental and theoretical results on the steering of electronic motion in a multi-electron system. A very high degree of light-waveform control over the directional emission of C+ and O+ fragments from the dissociative ionization of CO was observed. Ab initio based model calculations reveal contributions to the control related to the ionization and laser-induced population transfer between excited electronic states of CO+ during dissociation.
Pools of carbon dioxide are found in natural geological accumulations and in engineered storage in saline aquifers. It has been thought that once this CO2 dissolves in the formation water, making it denser, convection streams will transport it efficiently to depth, but this may not be so. Here, we assess theoretically and experimentally the impact of natural chemical reactions between the dissolved CO2 and the rock formation on the convection streams in the subsurface. We show that, while in carbonate rocks the streaming of dissolved carbon dioxide persists, the chemical interactions in silica…
In an Endex reactor endothermic and exothermic reactions are directly thermally coupled and kinetically matched to achieve intrinsic thermal stability, efficient conversion, autothermal operation, and minimal heat losses. Applied to the problem of in-line carbon dioxide separation from flue gas, Endex principles hold out the promise of effecting a carbon dioxide capture technology of unprecedented economic viability. In this work we describe an Endex Calcium Looping reactor, in which heat released by chemisorption of carbon dioxide onto calcium oxide is used directly to drive the reverse react…
The supercritical state is currently viewed as uniform and homogeneous on the pressure-temperature phase diagram in terms of physical properties. Here, we study structural properties of the supercritical carbon dioxide, and discover the existence of persistent medium-range order correlations which make supercritical carbon dioxide non-uniform and heterogeneous on an intermediate length scale, a result not hitherto anticipated. We report on the carbon dioxide heterogeneity shell structure where, in the first shell, both carbon and oxygen atoms experience gas-like type inter- actions with short …
Investigating the fate of dissolved carbon dioxide under extreme conditions is critical to understanding the deep carbon cycle in the Earth, a process that ultimately influences global climate change. We used first-principles molecular dynamics simulations to study carbonates and carbon dioxide dissolved in water at pressures (P) and temperatures (T) approximating the conditions of the Earth's upper mantle. Contrary to popular geochemical models assuming that molecular CO$_2$(aq) is the major carbon species present in water under deep earth conditions, we found that at 11 GPa and 1000 K carbon…
Momentum imaging measurements from two experiments are presented and interpreted with the aid of new ab initio theoretical calculations to describe the dissociative electron attachment (DEA) dynamics. We address the problem of how the 4 eV ^2Π_u shape resonance in CO_2 proceeds to dissociate to CO(^1Σ^+) + O^-(^2P) by DEA.
Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation is applied to the condensation process of supersaturated vapors of methane, ethane, and carbon dioxide. Simulations of systems with up to a million particles were conducted with a massively parallel MD program. This leads to reliable statistics and makes nucleation rates down to the order of 10^30/(m^3 s) accessible to the direct simulation approach. Simulation results are compared to the classical nucleation theory (CNT) as well as the theory of Laaksonen, Ford, and Kulmala (LFK) which introduces a size dependence of the specific surface energy. CNT describe…
A novel system containing nanoporous materials and carbonate ions is proposed, which is capable to capture CO2 from ambient air simply by controlling the amount of water (humidity) in the system. The system absorbs CO2 from the air when the surrounding is dry, whereas desorbs CO2 when wet. A design of such a CO2 absorption/desorption system is investigated in this paper using molecular dynamics and quantum mechanics simulations, and also verified by experiments. Its working mechanism is revealed as the reduction of free energy of the carbonate ion hydrolysis with the decrease of the number of …
Stereo-dynamics of dissociative electron attachments to CO_2 is investigated by the O^- anion velocity imaging experiments combined with the R-matrix calculations. ^2Π_g as a Feshbach resonant state of CO_2^- is confirmed to play roles in the dissociations around 8.0 eV. We find that the dynamic evolutions of the Renner-Teller effect lead to the dramatically different anisotropic O^- momentum distributions.
The reactions of CO$_2$ in water under extreme pressure-temperature conditions are of great importance to the carbon storage and transport below Earth's surface, which substantially affect the carbon budget in the atmosphere. We applied ab initio molecular dynamics simulations to study aqueous carbon solutions nanoconfined by graphene and stishovite (SiO$_2$) at 10 GPa and 1000$\sim$1400 K. We found that CO$_2$(aq) reacts more in nanoconfinement than in bulk. The stishovite-water interface makes the solutions more acidic, which shifts the chemical equilibria, and the interface chemistry also a…
A combined ab initio and quantum dynamical study characterizes a family of bent neutral carbon dioxide molecules in terms of their vibrational levels, electric dipole moment surfaces, and infrared spectra in the gas phase. The considered isomers include the dioxiranylidene (cyclic) form of CO$_2$ with the equilibrium valence angle of 72$^\circ$, belonging to the ground electronic state, and four open structures with the valence angles of 118$^\circ$/119$^\circ$ (belonging to the singlet and triplet electronic states $2^1\!A'$ and $1^3\!A'$, respectively) and 127$^\circ$/128$^\circ$ (states $1^…
The formation and presence of clathrate hydrates could influence the composition and stability of planetary ices and comets; they are at the heart of the development of numerous complex planetary models, all of which include the necessary condition imposed by their stability curves, some of which include the cage occupancy or host-guest content and the hydration number, but fewer take into account the kinetics aspects. We measure the temperature-dependent-diffusion-controlled formation of the carbon dioxide clathrate hydrate in the 155-210~K range in order to establish the clathrate formation …
noindent Henry's law constants of the solutes methane, nitrogen, oxygen and carbon dioxide in the solvent ethanol are predicted by molecular simulation. The molecular models for the solutes are taken from previous work. For the solvent ethanol, a new rigid anisotropic united atom molecular model based on Lennard-Jones and Coulombic interactions is developed. It is adjusted to experimental pure component saturated liquid density and vapor pressure data. Henry's law constants are calculated by evaluating the infinite dilution residual chemical potentials of the solutes from 273 to 498K with Wido…
An experimental approach in conducting NMR measurements at supercritical parameters of state is discussed. A novel design of the high-pressure NMR cell was developed which allowed eliminating the field inhomogeneity and, thus, increasing the sensitivity of the experiment at the supercritical state. Analysis of the MD simulations and NMR data showed that two conformers of ibuprofen dominate in the solution in supercritical CO2 along the critical isochore 1.3 \r{ho}cr(CO2). Conformer populations calculated from MD simulations and from NMR spectra agree with each other
The recent detections of electric-quadrupole (E2) transitions in water vapor and magnetic-dipole (M1) transitions in carbon dioxide have opened a new field in molecular spectroscopy. While in their present status, the spectroscopic databases provide only electric-dipole (E1) transitions for polyatomic molecules (H2O, CO2, N2O, CH4, O3), the possible impact of weak E2 and M1 bands to the modeling of the Earth and planetary atmospheres has to be addressed. This is especially important in the case of carbon dioxide for which E2 and M1 bands may be located in spectral windows of weak E1 absorption…

We describe a new principle - the Alkalinity Concentration Swing (ACS) - for direct air capture of carbon dioxide driven by concentrating an alkaline solution that has been exposed to the atmosphere and loaded with dissolved inorganic carbon. Upon concentration, the partial pressure of carbon dioxide increases, allowing for extraction and compression. We find that higher concentration factors result in proportionally higher outgassing pressure, and higher initial alkalinity concentrations at the same concentration factor outgas a higher concentration of CO2 relative to the feed solution. We ex…
The development of carbon dioxide (CO2) scavengers is an acute problem nowadays because of the global warming problem. Many groups around the globe intensively develop new greenhouse gas scavengers. Room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) are seen as a proper starting point to synthesize more environmentally friendly and high-performance sorbents. Aprotic heterocyclic anions (AHA) represent excellent agents for carbon capture and storage technologies. In the present work, we investigate RTILs in which both the weakly coordinating cation and AHA bind CO2. The ammonium-, phosphonium- and sulfoniu…
Coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectra (CARS) were obtained for CO$_2$ in a positive column discharge. The intensities of the Raman transitions to the $ν_1 / 2ν_2$ Fermi dyad decrease significantly when the discharge is turned on because of equalization of the lower and upper state populations by electron impact excitation, in a manner similar to saturation. The strength of the 1285 cm$^{-1}$ transition is observed to decrease by a factor of 20 greater than the 1388 cm$^{-1}$ line due to a quantum interference decreasing the vibrational relaxation rate of the upper state of the 1285 cm$^{-1}$ tran…
This study introduces the high yield, electrolytic synthesis of carbon nanofibers, CNFs, directly from carbon dioxide. Production of a precious commodity such as CNFs from atmospheric carbon dioxide provides impetus to limit this greenhouse gas and mitigate the rate of climate change. CNFs are formed at high rate using inexpensive nickel and steel electrodes in molten electrolytes. The process is demonstrated as a scaled-up stand-alone electrolytic cell, and is also shown compatible with the STEP, solar thermal electrochemical process, using concentrated sunlight at high solar to electric effi…
Global warming is seen as a drastic environmental problem nowadays. Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) concentration in the Earth's atmosphere is linked to the average temperature on the surface of the planet. Carbon capture and storage is an important technological endeavor aiming to improve the ecology. The present work investigates reaction paths that are responsible for CO 2 chemisorption by the ammonium- and phosphonium-based ionic liquids containing an aprotic heterocyclic anion 2-cyanopyrrolidine. We show that two moles of CO 2 per one mole of the gas scavenger can be theoretically fixed by such io…
Experiments for vacuum birefringence and vacuum dichroism have been set up with high-finesse high magnetic experimental apparatuses, which seem to be ideal for small gaseous Cotton-Mouton effect (CME) measurements. PVLAS Collaboration has measured CMEs in krypton, xenon and neon at the wavelength of 1064 nm. In this Letter, we report on our measurement of CMEs in nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, argon, and krypton at the same wavelength in a magnetic field B = 2.3 T at pressure P = 0.5-300 Torr and temperature T = 295-298 K. Our results agree with the PVLAS results in the common cases.
We have performed a thorough computational study to assess the accuracy of density functional theory (DFT) methods in describing the interactions of CO2 with model alkali-earth-metal (AEM, Ca and Li) decorated carbon structures, namely anthracene (C14H10) molecules. We find that gas-adsorption energy and equilibrium structure results obtained with both standard (i.e. LDA and GGA) and hybrid (i.e. PBE0 and B3LYP) exchange-correlation functionals of DFT differ significantly from results obtained with second-order Moller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2), an accurate computational quantum chemist…
We experimentally investigate laser-induced dissociative recombination of CO$_2$ in linearly polarized strong laser fields with coincidence measurements. Our results show laser-induced dissociation processes originate from an electron recombination process after laser-induced double ionization. After double ionization of CO$_2$, one electron is recaptured by the CO$_2^{2+}$ and localized to O$^+$ or CO$^+$ in the following dissociation process. We found that the probability of electron localization to O$^{+}$ is much higher than that to CO$^+$. Further, our measurements reveal that the recombi…
Ceria (CeO2) is a promising catalyst for the reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) to liquid fuels and commodity chemicals, in part because of its high oxygen storage capacity, yet the fundamentals of CO2 adsorption and initial activation on CeO2 surfaces remain largely unknown. We use density functional theory, corrected for onsite Coulombic interactions (DFT+U), to explore various adsorption sites and configurations for CO2 on stoichiometric and reduced CeO2 (110). Our model of reduced CeO2 (110) contains oxygen vacancies at the topmost atomic layer and undergoes surface reconstruction upon intr…
We investigate the empirical data for the vapor pressure (154$ \leq$$T$$\leq$196 K) and heat capacity (15.52$ \leq$$T$$\leq$189.78 K) of the solid carbon dioxide. The approach is both theoretical and numerical, using a computer algebra system (CAS). From the latter point of view, we have adopted a cubic piecewise polynomial representation for the heat capacity and reached an excellent agreement between the available empirical data and the evaluated one. Furthermore, we have obtained values for the vapor pressure and heat of sublimation at temperatures below 195 right down to 0 K. The key prere…
Direct fired supercritical CO2 (sCO2) power cycles allow for the combustion of gaseous fuels under oxyfuel conditions with inherent carbon capture. As the CO2 is captured intrinsically, the efficiency penalty of capture on the overall plant is small, meaning that power plants achieve a similar efficiency to traditional fossil fuel power plants without carbon capture and storage. However, at high pressures and in large dilutions of CO2, combustion mechanisms are poorly understood. Therefore, in this paper sensitivity and quantitative analysis of four established chemical kinetic mechanisms have…
The global potential energy surfaces of the first six singlet electronic states of CO$_2$, 1---3$^1/!A'$ and 1---3$^1/!A"$ are constructed using high level ab initio calculations. In linear molecule, they correspond to $\tilde{X}^1Σ_g^+$, $1^1Δ_u$, $1^1Σ_u^-$, and $1^1Π_g$. The calculations accurately reproduce the known benchmarks for all states and establish missing benchmarks for future calculations. The calculated states strongly interact at avoided crossings and true intersections, both conical and glancing. Near degeneracies can be found for each pair of six states and many intersections…
In order to separate a mixture of hydrogen ($H_2$) and carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) gases, we have proposed a new approach employing the graphdiyne-like membrane (GDY-H) using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. GDY-H is constructed by removing one-third diacetylenic ($-$C$\equiv$C$-$C$\equiv$C$-$) bonds linkages and replacing with hydrogen atoms in graphdiyne structure. Our DFT calculations exhibit poor selectivity and good permeances for $H_2$/$CO_2$ gases passing through this membrane. To improve the performance of the GDY-H membrane for $H_2$/$C…
A number of simple pair interaction potentials of the carbon dioxide molecule are investigated and found to underestimate the magnitude of the second virial coefficient in the temperature interval 220 K to 448 K by up to 20%. Also the third virial coefficient is underestimated by these models. A rigid, polarizable, three-site interaction potential reproduces the experimental second and third virial coefficients to within a few percent. It is based on the modified Buckingham exp-6 potential, an anisotropic Axilrod-Teller correction and Gaussian charge densities on the atomic sites with an induc…
Oxygen ($O_2$) is one of the most important elements required to sustain life. The concentration of $O_2$ on Earth has been accumulated over millions of years and has a direct connection with that of $CO_2$. Further, $CO_2$ plays an important role in many other planetary atmospheres. Therefore, molecular reactions involving $CO_2$ are critical for studying the atmospheres of such planets. Existing studies on the dissociation of $CO_2$ are exclusively focused on the C--O bond breakage. Here we report first experiments on the direct observation of molecular Oxygen formation from $CO_2$ in strong…
For the design and optimization of CO2 recovery from alcoholic fermentation processes by distillation, models for vapor-liquid equilibria (VLE) are needed. Two such thermodynamic models, the Peng-Robinson equation of state (EOS) and a model based on Henry's law constants, are proposed for the ternary mixture N2+O2+CO2. Pure substance parameters of the Peng-Robinson EOS are taken from the literature, whereas the binary parameters of the Van der Waals one-fluid mixing rule are adjusted to experimental binary VLE data. The Peng-Robinson EOS describes both binary and ternary experimental data well…
The distribution, recycling and storage of carbon in the Earth are of fundamental importance to understand the global carbon cycle between the deep Earth and near surface reservoirs. Degassing of CO2 at mid-ocean ridges may give information on the source region but the very low solubility of CO2 in tholeitic basalts has for consequence that near all Mid-Ocean Ridge Basalts glasses exsolve their CO2 rich vapor at shallow depth as they approach the ocean floor. Hence their CO2 contents mostly represent the pressure at eruption and not the source region. Recent petrological investigations have sh…
We apply first principles computational techniques to analyze the two-electron, multi-step, electrochemical reduction of CO2 to CO in water using cobalt porphyrin as a catalyst. Density Functional Theory calculations with hybrid functionals and dielectric continuum solvation are used to determine the steps at which electrons are added. This information is corroborated with ab initio molecular dynamics simulations in an explicit aqueous environment which reveal the critical role of water in stabilizing a key intermediate formed by CO2 bound to cobalt. Using potential of mean force calculations,…
Thermodynamic property calculations of mixtures containing carbon dioxide (CO$_2$) and water, including brines, are essential in theoretical models of many natural and industrial processes. The properties of greatest practical interest are density, solubility, and enthalpy. Many models for density and solubility calculations have been presented in the literature, but there exists only one study, by Spycher and Pruess, that has compared theoretical molar enthalpy predictions with experimental data. In this report, we recommend two different models for enthalpy calculations: the CPA equation of …
The absorption spectrum of CO$_2$ in the wavelength range 120\,nm --- 160\,nm is analyzed by means of quantum mechanical calculations performed using vibronically coupled PESs of five singlet valence electronic states and the coordinate dependent transition dipole moment vectors. The thermally averaged spectrum, calculated for T=190\,K via Boltzmann averaging of optical transitions from many initial rotational states, accurtely reproduces the experimental spectral envelope, consisting of a low and a high energy band, the positions of the absorption maxima, their FWHMs, peak intensities, and fr…
An experimental effort was conducted to measure the change in internal energy of non-ideal carbon dioxide as its volume rapidly expanded with the sudden opening of a valve from one to two compressed gas cylinders. This was achieved by measuring the mass heat capacity of the gas cylinders and the manifold-valve, and measuring the change in temperature from the sudden doubling of volume of the non-ideal carbon dioxide. It was determined that an empirical equation for the change in internal energy of a non-ideal fluid was more accurate than previous methods used for estimating the change in inter…
The diffusion of molecules on interstellar grain surfaces is one of the most important driving forces for the molecular complexity in the interstellar medium. Due to the lack of laboratory measurements, astrochemical modeling of grain surface processes usually assumes a constant ratio between the diffusion energy barrier and the desorption energy. This over-simplification inevitably causes large uncertainty in model predictions. We present a new measurement of the diffusion of CO$_2$ molecules on the surface of non-porous amorphous solid water (np-ASW), an analog of the ice mantle that covers …
