In the massive star-forming region IRAS 21078+5211, a highly fragmented cluster (0.1~pc in size) of molecular cores is observed, located at the density peak of an elongated (1~pc in size) molecular cloud. A small (1~km/s per 0.1~pc) LSR velocity (Vlsr) gradient is detected across the axis of the molecular cloud. Assuming we are observing a mass flow from the harboring cloud to the cluster, we derive a mass infall rate of about 10^{-4}~M_{sun}~yr^{-1}. The most massive cores (labeled 1, 2, and 3) are found at the center of the cluster, and these are the only ones that present a signature of protostellar activity in terms of emission from high-excitation molecular lines or a molecular outflow. We reveal an extended (size about 0.1~pc), bipolar collimated molecular outflow emerging from core 1. We believe this is powered by a (previously discovered) compact (size <= 1000~au) radio jet, ejected by a YSO embedded in core 1 (named YSO-1), since the molecular outflow and the radio jet are almost parallel and have a comparable momentum rate. By means of high-excitation lines, we find a large (14~km/s over 500~au) Vlsr gradient at the position of YSO-1, oriented approximately perpendicular to the radio jet. Assuming this is an edge-on, rotating disk and fitting a Keplerian rotation pattern, we determine the YSO-1 mass to be 5.6+/-2.0~M_{sun}. The water masers (previously observed with VLBI) emerge within 100-300~au from YSO-1 and are unique tracers of the jet kinematics. Their three-dimensional (3D) velocity pattern reveals that the gas flows along, and rotates about, the jet axis. We show that the 3D maser velocities are fully consistent with the magneto-centrifugal disk-wind models predicting a cylindrical rotating jet. Under this hypothesis, we determine the jet radius to be about 16~au and the corresponding launching radius and terminal velocity to be about 2.2~au and 200~km/s, respectively.
We present an analysis of the region IRAS 08589-4714 with the aim of characterizing the molecular environment. We observed the CO(3-2), ^{13}CO(3-2), C^{18}O(3-2), HCO+(3-2), and HCN(3-2) molecular lines in a region of 150" x 150", centered on the IRAS source, to analyze the distribution and characteristics of the molecular gas linked to the IRAS source. The molecular gas distribution reveals a molecular clump that is coincident with IRAS 08589-4714 and with a dust clump detected at 1.2 mm. The molecular clump is 0.45 pc in radius and its mass and H_2 volume density are 310 Mo and 1.2 x 10^4 c…
We present the results of CS J=2-1 mapping observations towards 39 massive star-forming regions selected from the previous CO line survey of cold IRAS sources with high-velocity CO flows along the Galactic plane (Yang et al. 2002). All sources are detected in CS J=2-1 showing the existence of CS clumps around the IRAS sources. However, one-third of the sources are not deeply embedded in the dense clumps by comparison of the central powering IRAS sources and the morphologies of CS clumps. Physical parameters of the dense molecular clumps are presented. We have identified 12 high-mass protostell…
We present molecular line observations of the high-mass molecular clump IRAS 16562$-$3959 taken at 3 mm using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) at 1.$\!\!^{\prime\prime}$7 angular resolution ($0.014$ pc spatial resolution). This clump hosts the actively accreting high-mass young stellar object (HMYSO) G345.4938+01.4677, associated with a hypercompact HII region. We identify and analyze emission lines from 22 molecular species (encompassing 34 isomers) and classify them into two groups, depending on their spatial distribution within the clump. One of these groups gathers s…
We investigate the dust properties in three spectroscopically anomalous galaxies (IRAS F10398+1455, IRAS F21013-0739 and SDSS J0808+3948). Their Spitzer/IRS spectra are characterized by a steep ~5-8 micron emission continuum, strong emission bands from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules, and prominent 10 micron silicate emission. The steep ~5-8 micron continuum and strong PAH emission features suggest the presence of starbursts, while the silicate emission is indicative of significant heating from AGNs. The simultaneous detection of these two observational properties has rarely be…
The structure formation of the dense interstellar material and the fragmentation of clumps into cores is a fundamental step to understand how stars and stellar clusters form. We aim to establish a statistical view of clump fragmentation at sub-parsec scales based on a large sample of massive clumps selected from the ATLASGAL survey. We used the APEX/SABOCA camera at 350 $μ$m to image clumps at a resolution of 8.$''$5. The majority of the sample consists of massive clumps that are weak or in absorption at 24 $μ$m. We resolve rich filamentary structures and identify the population of compact sou…
Massive stars, multiple stellar systems and clusters are born from the gravitational collapse of massive dense gaseous clumps, and the way these systems form strongly depends on how the parent clump fragments into cores during collapse. Numerical simulations show that magnetic fields may be the key ingredient in regulating fragmentation. Here we present ALMA observations at ~0.25'' resolution of the thermal dust continuum emission at ~278 GHz towards a turbulent, dense, and massive clump, IRAS 16061-5048c1, in a very early evolutionary stage. The ALMA image shows that the clump has fragmented …
We measured polarized dust emission at 350um towards the high-mass star forming massive dense clump IRAS 20126+4104 using the SHARC II Polarimeter, SHARP, at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory. Most of the observed magnetic field vectors agree well with magnetic field vectors obtained from a numerical simulation for the case when the global magnetic field lines are inclined with respect to the rotation axis of the dense clump. The results of the numerical simulation show that rotation plays an important role on the evolution of the massive dense clump and its magnetic field. The direction o…
In this work, we derive the stellar initial mass function (IMF) from the superposition of mass distributions of dense cores, generated through gravoturbulent fragmentation of unstable clumps in molecular clouds (MCs) and growing through competitive accretion. MCs are formed by the turbulent cascade in the interstellar medium at scales L from 100 down to ~0.1 pc. Their internal turbulence is essentially supersonic and creates clumps with a lognormal distribution of densities n. Our model is based on the assumption of a power-law relationship between clump mass and clump density: n~m^x, where x …
This paper presents a multiwavelength investigation of the Galactic HII IRAS 17149$-$3916. Using the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope, India, first low-frequency radio continuum observations at 610 and 1280 MHz for this region are presented. The ionized gas emission displays an interesting cometary morphology which is likely powered by the early type source, E4 (IRS-1). The origin of the cometary morphology is discussed under the framework of the widely accepted bow shock, champagne flow, and clumpy cloud mechanisms. The mid- and far-infrared data from Spitzer-GLIMPSE and Herschel-Hi-GAL reveal…
Fragmentation of a spiral arm is thought to drive the formation of giant clumps in galaxies. Using linear perturbation analysis for self-gravitating spiral arms, we derive an instability parameter and define the conditions for clump formation. We extend our analysis to multi-component systems that consist of gas and stars in an external potential. We then perform numerical simulations of isolated disc galaxies with isothermal gas, and compare the results with the prediction of our analytic model. Our model describes accurately the evolution of the spiral arms in our simulations, even when spir…
The ionization feedback from HII regions modifies the properties of high-mass starless clumps (HMSCs, of several hundred to a few thousand solar masses with a size of ~0.1-1 pc), such as temperature and turbulence, on the clump scale. The question of whether the presence of HII regions modifies the core-scale fragmentation and star formation in HMSCs remains to be explored. We aim to investigate the difference of 0.025 pc-scale fragmentation between candidate HMSCs that are strongly impacted by HII regions and less disturbed ones. We also search for evidence of mass shaping and induced star fo…
Fragmentation of massive dense molecular clouds is the starting point in the formation of rich clusters and massive stars. Theory and numerical simulations indicate that the population of the fragments (number, mass, diameter, separation) resulting from the gravitational collapse of such clumps is probably regulated by the balance between the magnetic field and the other competitors of self-gravity, in particular turbulence and protostellar feedback. We have observed 11 massive, dense and young star-forming clumps with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) in the thermal dust continuum emi…
We present a multi-wavelength observational study of IRAS 17008-4040 and IRAS 17009-4042 to probe the star-formation (SF) mechanisms operational in both the sites. Each IRAS site is embedded within a massive ATLASGAL 870 micron clump (~2430 - 2900 M_sun), and several parsec-scale filaments at 160 micron are radially directed toward these clumps (at T_d ~ 25 - 32 K). The analysis of the Spitzer and VVV photometric data depicts a group of infrared-excess sources toward both the clumps, suggesting the ongoing SF activities. In each IRAS site, high-resolution GMRT radio maps at 0.61 and 1.28 GHz c…
The formation process of high-mass stars (>8M$_\odot$) is poorly constrained, particularly, the effects of clump fragmentation creating multiple systems and the mechanism of mass accretion onto the cores. We study the fragmentation of dense gas clumps, and trace the circumstellar rotation and outflows by analyzing observations of the high-mass (~500M$_\odot$) star-forming region IRAS 23033+5951. Using the Northern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) in three configurations and the IRAM 30-m single-dish telescope at 220GHz, we probe the gas and dust emission at an angular resolution of ~0.45arcse…
(Abridged) The initial physical conditions of high-mass stars and protoclusters remain poorly characterized. To this end we present the first targeted ALMA 1.3mm continuum and spectral line survey towards high-mass starless clump candidates, selecting a sample of 12 of the most massive candidates ($400-4000\, M_\odot$) within 5 kpc. The joint 12+7m array maps have a high spatial resolution of $\sim 3000\, \mathrm{au}$ ($\sim 0.8^{\prime\prime}$) and have point source mass-completeness down to $\sim 0.3\, M_\odot$ at $6σ$ (or $1σ$ column density sensitivity of $1.1\times10^{22}\, \mathrm{cm^{-2…
(Abridged) ASHES has been designed to systematically characterize the earliest stages and to constrain theories of high-mass star formation. A total of 12 massive (>500 $M_{\odot}$), cold (<15 K), 3.6-70 $μ$m dark prestellar clump candidates, embedded in IRDCs, were carefully selected in the pilot survey to be observed with ALMA. We mosaiced each clump (~1 arcmin^2) in dust and line emission with the 12m/7m/TP arrays at 224 GHz, resulting in ~1.2" resolution (~4800 AU). As the first paper of the series, we concentrate on the dust emission to reveal the clump fragmentation. We detect 294 cores,…
We performed Herschel observations of the continuum and line emission from the high-mass star-forming region IRAS20126+4104, which hosts a well-studied B-type (proto)star powering a bipolar outflow and is associated with a Keplerian circumstellar disk. The continuum images at six wavelengths allowed us to derive an accurate estimate of the bolometric luminosity and mass of the molecular clump enshrouding the disk. The same region has been mapped in 12 rotational transitions of carbon monoxide, which were used in synergy with the continuum data to determine the temperature and density distribut…
We present a multi-wavelength data analysis of IRAS 05463+2652 (hereafter I05463+2652) to study star formation mechanisms. A shell-like structure around I05463+2652 is evident in the Herschel column density map, which is not associated with any ionized emission. Based on the Herschel sub-millimeter images, several parsec-scale filaments (including two elongated filaments, "s-fl" and "nw-fl" having lengths of ~6.4 pc and ~8.8 pc, respectively) are investigated in I05463+2652 site. Herschel temperature map depicts all these features in a temperature range of ~11-13 K. 39 clumps are identified an…
Massive clumps tend to fragment into clusters of cores and condensations, some of which form high-mass stars. In this work, we study the structure of massive clumps at different scales, analyze the fragmentation process, and investigate the possibility that star formation is triggered by nearby HII regions. We present a high angular resolution study of a sample of 8 massive proto-cluster clumps. Combining infrared data, we use few-arcsecond resolution radio- and millimeter interferometric data to study their fragmentation and evolution. Our sample is unique in the sense that all the clumps hav…
We report new, $\sim$1000 AU spatial resolution observations of 225 GHz dust continuum emission towards the OB cluster-forming molecular clump G33.92+0.11. On parsec scales, this molecular clump presents a morphology with several arm-like dense gas structures surrounding the two central massive ($\gtrsim$100 $M_{\odot}$) cores. From the new, higher resolution observations, we identified 28 localized, spatially compact dust continuum emission sources, which may be candidates of young stellar objects. Only one of them is not embedded within known arm-like (or elongated) dense gas structures. The…
Sufficiently massive clumps of molecular gas collapse under self-gravity and fragment to spawn a cluster of stars that have a range of masses. We investigate observationally the early stages of formation of a stellar cluster in a massive filamentary infrared dark cloud, G28.34+0.06 P1, in the 1.3mm continuum and spectral line emission using the ALMA. Sensitive continuum data reveal further fragmentation in five dusty cores at a resolution of several 10^3 AU. Spectral line emission from C18O, CH3OH, 13CS, H2CO and N2D+ are detected for the first time toward these dense cores. We found that thre…
We study the effect of sub-grid physics, galaxy mass, structural parameters and resolution on the fragmentation of gas-rich galaxy discs into massive star forming clumps. The initial conditions are set up with the aid of the ARGO cosmological hydrodynamical simulation. Blast-wave feedback does not suppress fragmentation, but reduces both the number of clumps and the duration of the unstable phase. Once formed, bound clumps cannot be destroyed by our feedback model. Widespread fragmentation is promoted by high gas fractions and low halo concentrations. Yet giant clumps $M > 10^8 M_{\odot}$ last…
To probe the star formation (SF) process, we present a multi-wavelength study of IRAS 05480+2545 (hereafter I05480+2545). Analysis of Herschel data reveals a massive clump (M_clump ~ 1875 Msun; peak N(H_2) ~ 4.8 x 10^{22} cm^{-2}; A_V ~ 51 mag) containing the 6.7 GHz methanol maser and I05480+2545, which is also depicted in a temperature range of 18-26 K. Several noticeable parsec-scale filaments are detected in the Herschel 250 microns image and seem to be radially directed to the massive clump. It resembles more of a "hub-filament" system. Deeply embedded young stellar objects (YSOs) have be…
We present a multi-scale and multi-wavelength study to investigate the star formation process around IRAS 17599$-$2148 that is part of an elongated filamentary structure (EFS) (extension $\sim$21 pc) seen in the {\it Herschel} maps. Using the {\it Herschel} data analysis, at least six massive clumps (M$_{clump}$ $\sim$777 -- 7024 M$_{\odot}$) are found in the EFS with a range of temperature and column density of $\sim$16--39~K and $\sim$0.6--11~$\times$~10$^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ (A$_{V}$ $\sim$7--117 mag), respectively. The EFS hosts cold gas regions (i.e. infrared dark cloud) without any radio dete…
We present a multiwavelength investigation of star formation activity towards the southern H II regions associated with IRAS 17160-3707, located at a distance of 6.2 kpc with a bolometric luminosity of 830000 Lsun. The ionised gas distribution and dust clumps in the parental molecular cloud are examined in detail using measurements at infrared, submillimeter and radio wavelengths. The radio continuum images at 1280 and 610 MHz obtained using Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope reveal the presence of multiple compact sources as well as nebulous emission. At submillimeter wavelengths, we identify seven…
Early type massive stars drive thin, dense shells whose edges often show evidence of star-formation. The possibility of fragmentation of these shells, leading to the formation of putative star-forming clumps is examined with the aid of semi-analytic arguments. We also derive a mass-spectrum for clumps condensing out of these shells by performing Monte-Carlo simulations of the problem. By extending on results from our previous work on the stability of thin, dense shells, we argue that clump-mass estimated by other authors in the past, under a set of simplifying assumptions, are several orders o…
We present a comprehensive multiwavelength investigation of a likely massive young cluster `IRAS 05100+3723' and its environment with the aim to understand its formation history and feedback effects. We find that IRAS 05100+3723 is a distant ($\sim$3.2 kpc), moderate mass ($\sim$500 \msun), young ($\sim$3 Myr) cluster with its most massive star being an O8.5V-type. From spectral modeling, we estimate the effective temperature and log $g$ of the star as $\sim$33,000 K and $\sim$3.8, respectively. Our radio continuum observations reveal that the star has ionized its environment forming an HII re…
The early evolution of massive cluster progenitors is poorly understood. We investigate the fragmentation properties from 0.3 pc to 0.06 pc scales of a homogenous sample of infrared-quiet massive clumps within 4.5 kpc selected from the ATLASGAL survey. Using the ALMA 7m array we detect compact dust continuum emission towards all targets, and find that fragmentation, at these scales, is limited. The mass distribution of the fragments uncovers a large fraction of cores above 40 $M_\odot$, corresponding to massive dense cores (MDCs) with masses up to ~400 $M_\odot$. 77 % of the clumps contain at …
The dense molecular clump at the center of the Barnard 59 (B59) complex is the only region in the Pipe Nebula that has formed a small, stellar cluster. The previous analysis of a high resolution near-IR dust extinction map revealed that the nuclear region in B59 is a massive, mostly quiescent clump of 18.9 solar masses. The clump shows a monolithic profile, possibly indicating that the clump is on the way to collapse, with no evident fragmentation that could lead to another group of star systems. In this paper we present new analysis that compares the dust extinction map with a new dust emissio…
We study the gravitational fragmentation of circumstellar discs accreting extremely metal-poor ($Z \leq 10^{-3}$ Zsun) gas, performing a suite of three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations using the adaptive mesh refinement code Enzo. We systematically follow the long-term evolution for 2000 years after the first protostar's birth, for the cases of $Z = 0$, $10^{-5}$, $10^{-4}$, and $10^{-3}$ Zsun. We show that evolution of number of self-gravitating clumps qualitatively changes with $Z$. Vigorous fragmentation induced by dust cooling occurs in the metal-poor cases, temporarily providing about…
IRAS 22134+5834 was observed in the centimeter with (E)VLA, 3~mm with CARMA, 2~mm with PdBI, and 1.3~mm with SMA, to study the continuum emission as well as the molecular lines, that trace different physical conditions of the gas to study the influence of massive YSOs on nearby starless cores, and the possible implications in the clustered star formation process. The multi-wavelength centimeter continuum observations revealed two radio sources within the cluster, VLA1 and VLA2. VLA1 is considered to be an optically thin UCHII region with a size of 0.01~pc and sits at the edge of the near-infra…
Recent surveys of dust continuum emission at sub-mm wavelengths have shown that filamentary molecular clouds are ubiquitous along the Galactic plane. These structures are inhomogeneous, with over-densities that are sometimes associated with infrared emission and active of star formation. To investigate the connection between filaments and star formation, requires an understanding of the processes that lead to the fragmentation of filaments and a determination of the physical properties of the over-densities (clumps). In this paper, we present a multi-wavelength study of five filamentary molecu…
To investigate the physical processes, we present observational results of the sites S234, V582, and IRAS 05231+3512 situated toward l = 171.7 - 174.1 degrees. Based on the CO line data, we find that these sites are not physically connected, and contain at least one filament (with length > 7 pc). The observed line masses (M_line,obs) of the filaments associated with V582 and IRAS 05231+3512 are ~37 and ~28 M_sun/pc, respectively. These filaments are characterized as thermally supercritical, and harbor several clumps. Groups of infrared-excess sources and massive B-type stars are observed towar…
We present Submillimeter Array (SMA) λ= 0.88mm observations of an infrared dark cloud (IRDC) G28.34+0.06. Located in the quiescent southern part of the G28.34 cloud, the region of interest is a massive ($>10^3$\,\msun) molecular clump P1 with a luminosity of $\sim 10^3$ \lsun, where our previous SMA observations at 1.3mm have revealed a string of five dust cores of 22-64 \msun\ along the 1 pc IR-dark filament. The cores are well aligned at a position angle of 48 degrees and regularly spaced at an average projected separation of 0.16 pc. The new high-resolution, high-sensitivity 0.88\,mm image …
We present a new method to study the characteristic scales of collapse and fragmentation in galactic disks. Clump formation is seeded in simulations via controlled perturbations with a specified wavelength and velocity. These are applied to otherwise quiet gas disks ranging from analogues of present day spirals to gas-rich, high-redshift galaxies. The results are compared to linear theory, turbulently perturbed disks and observations. The results reflect the expectations of linear, non-axisymmetric theory with a finite window for growth into a bound clump. We identify two new modes of clump fo…
A multi-wavelength investigation of the star forming complex IRAS 20286+4105, located in the Cygnus-X region, is presented here. Near-infrared K-band data is used to revisit the cluster / stellar group identified in previous studies. The radio continuum observations, at 610 and 1280 MHz show the presence of a HII region possibly powered by a star of spectral type B0 - B0.5. The cometary morphology of the ionized region is explained by invoking the bow-shock model where the likely association with a nearby supernova remnant is also explored. A compact radio knot with non-thermal spectral index …
The fragmentation of shocked flows in a thermally bistable medium provides a natural mechanism to form turbulent cold clouds as precursors to molecular clouds. Yet because of the large density and temperature differences and the range of dynamical scales involved, following this process with numerical simulations is challenging. We compare two-dimensional simulations of flow-driven cloud formation without self-gravity, using the Lagrangian Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) code VINE and the Eulerian grid code Proteus. Results are qualitatively similar for both methods, yet the variable spa…
Supermassive stars (SMSs; >10^5 Msun) formed in the first protogalaxies with virial temperature T_vir>10^4 K are expected to collapse into seeds of supermassive black hole (SMBHs) in the high-redshift universe (z>7). Fragmentation of the primordial gas is, however, a possible obstacle to SMS formation. We discuss the expected properties of a compact, metal-free, marginally unstable nuclear protogalactic disk, and the fate of the clumps formed in the disk by gravitational instability. Interior to a characteristic radius R_f=few*10^{-2} pc, the disk fragments into massive clumps with M_c~30 Msun…

We present new spectral line observations of the CH3CN molecule in the accretion disk around the massive protostar IRAS 20126+4104 with the Submillimeter Array that for the first time measure the disk density, temperature, and rotational velocity with sufficient resolution (0.37", equivalent to ~600 AU) to assess the gravitational stability of the disk through the Toomre-Q parameter. Our observations resolve the central 2000 AU region that shows steeper velocity gradients with increasing upper state energy, indicating an increase in the rotational velocity of the hotter gas nearer the star. Su…
IRAS 17256-3631 is a southern Galactic massive star forming region located at a distance of 2 kpc. In this paper, we present a multiwavelength investigation of the embedded cluster, the HII region, as well as the parent cloud. Radio images at 325, 610 and 1372 MHz were obtained using GMRT, India while the near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy were carried out using UKIRT and Mt. Abu Infrared Telescope, India. The near-infrared K-band image reveals the presence of a partially embedded infrared cluster. The spectral features of the brightest star in the cluster, IRS-1, spectroscopically agrees …
Fragmentation of spiral arms can drive the formation of giant clumps and induce intense star formation in disc galaxies. Based on the spiral-arm instability analysis of our Paper I, we present linear perturbation theory of dynamical instability of self-gravitating spiral arms of magnetised gas, focusing on the effect of toroidal magnetic fields. Spiral arms can be destabilised by the toroidal fields which cancel Coriolis force, i.e. magneto-Jeans instability. Our analysis can be applied to multi-component systems that consist of gas and stars. To test our analysis, we perform ideal magneto-hyd…
Analysis of all-sky Planck submillimetre observations and the IRAS 100um data has led to the detection of a population of Galactic cold clumps. The clumps can be used to study star formation and dust properties in a wide range of Galactic environments. Our aim is to measure dust spectral energy distribution (SED) variations as a function of the spatial scale and the wavelength. We examine the SEDs at large scales using IRAS, Planck, and Herschel data. At smaller scales, we compare with JCMT/SCUBA-2 850um maps with Herschel data that are filtered using the SCUBA-2 pipeline. Clumps are extracted…
We show results from the radiation hydrodynamics (RHD) simulations of tidal disruption of a star on a parabolic orbit by a supermassive black hole (SMBH) based on a three-dimensional smoothed particle hydrodynamics code with radiative transfer. We find that such a tidally disrupted star fragment and form clumps soon after its tidal disruption. The fragmentation results from the endothermic processes of ionization and dissociation that reduce the gas pressure, leading to local gravitational collapse. Radiative cooling is less effective because the stellar debris is still highly optically thick …
Sensitive, imaging observations of the 1.1 mm dust continuum emission from a 1 deg^2 area collected with the AzTEC bolometer camera on the Large Millimeter Telescope are presented. A catalog of 1545 compact sources is constructed based on a Wiener-optimization filter. These sources are linked to larger clump structures identified in the Bolocam Galactic Plane Survey. Hydrogen column densities are calculated for all sources and mass and mean volume densities are derived for the subset of sources for which kinematic distances can be assigned. The AzTEC sources are localized, high density peaks w…
This study is part of the project ``CORE'', an IRAM/NOEMA large program consisting of observations of the millimeter continuum and molecular line emission towards 20 selected high-mass star forming regions. We focus on IRAS23385+6053, which is believed to be the least evolved source of the CORE sample. The observations were performed at ~1.4 mm and employed three configurations of NOEMA and additional single-dish maps, merged with the interferometric data to recover the extended emission. Our correlator setup covered a number of lines from well-known hot core tracers and a few outflow tracers.…
The formation and properties of star clusters formed at the edges of H II regions are poorly known. We study stellar content, physical conditions, and star formation processes around a relatively unknown young H II region IRAS 10427-6032, located in the southern outskirts of the Carina Nebula. We make use of near-IR data from VISTA, mid-IR from Spitzer and WISE, far-IR from Herschel, sub-mm from ATLASGAL, and 843 MHz radio-continuum data. Using multi-band photometry, we find a total of 5 Class I and 29 Class II young stellar object (YSO) candidates, most of which newly identified, in the 5'$\t…
High-redshift star-forming galaxies have very different morphologies compared to nearby ones. Indeed, they are often dominated by bright star-forming structures of masses up to $10^{8-9}$ $\mathrm{M}_\odot$ dubbed «giant clumps». However, recent observations questioned this result by showing only low-mass structures or no structure at all. We use Adaptative Mesh Refinement hydrodynamical simulations of galaxies with parsec-scale resolution to study the formation of structures inside clumpy high-redshift galaxies. We show that in very gas-rich galaxies star formation occurs in small gas cluster…
The Core Mass Functions (CMFs) of low-mass star-forming regions are found to resemble the shape of the Initial Mass Function (IMF). A similar result is observed for the dust clumps in high-mass star forming regions, although at spatial scales of clusters that do not resolve the substructure found in them. The region IRAS 19410+2336 is one exception, having been observed at spatial scales on the order of ~2500AU, resolving the clump substructure into individual cores. We mapped that region with the PdBI in the 1.4mm and 3mm continuum and several transitions of H2CO and CH3CN. The H2CO transitio…
[Abridged] We have recently reported on the collapse and fragmentation properties of the northernmost part of this structure, located ~2.4pc north of Orion KL -- the Orion Molecular Cloud 3 (OMC 3, Takahashi et al. 2013). As part of our project to study the integral-shaped filament, we analyze the fragmentation properties of the northern OMC 1 filament. This filament is a dense structure previously identified by JCMT/SCUBA submillimeter continuum and VLA ammonia observations and shown to have fragmented into clumps. Aims: We study the fragmentation and dynamical properties of a massive starless gas clump at the onset of high-mass star formation. Methods: Based on Herschel continuum data we identify a massive gas clump that remains far-infrared dark up to 100mum wavelengths. The fragmentation and dynamical properties are investigated by means of Plateau de Bure Interferometer and Nobeyama 45m single-dish spectral line and continuum observations. Results: The massive gas reservoir fragments at spatial scales of ~18000AU in four cores. Comparing the spatial extent of this high-mass region with intermediate- …
Cosmic metallicity evolution possibly creates the diversity of star formation modes at different epochs. Gravitational fragmentation of circumstellar discs provides an important formation channel of multiple star systems, including close binaries. We here study the nature of disc fragmentation, systematically performing a suite of two-dimensional radiation-hydrodynamic simulations, in a broad range of metallicities, from the primordial to the solar values. In particular, we follow relatively long-term disc evolution over 15 kyr after the disc formation, incorporating the effect of heating by t…
The dynamical processes that control star formation in molecular clouds are not well understood, and in particular, it is unclear if rotation plays a major role in cloud evolution. We investigate the importance of rotation in cloud evolution by studying the kinematic structure of a spiral-shaped Galactic molecular cloud G052.24+00.74. The cloud belongs to a large filament, and is stretching over ~ 100 pc above the Galactic disk midplane. The spiral-shaped morphology of the cloud suggests that the cloud is rotating. We have analysed the kinematic structure of the cloud, and study the fragmentat…
