We study the probability distribution of entanglement in the Quantum Symmetric Simple Exclusion Process, a model of fermions hopping with random Brownian amplitudes between neighboring sites. We consider a protocol where the system is initialized in a pure product state of $M$ particles, and focus on the late-time distribution of Rényi-$q$ entropies for a subsystem of size $\ell$. By means of a Coulomb gas approach from Random Matrix Theory, we compute analytically the large-deviation function of the entropy in the thermodynamic limit. For $q>1$, we show that, depending on the value of the ratio $\ell/M$, the entropy distribution displays either two or three distinct regimes, ranging from low- to high-entanglement. These are connected by points where the probability density features singularities in its third derivative, which can be understood in terms of a transition in the corresponding charge density of the Coulomb gas. Our analytic results are supported by numerical Monte Carlo simulations.
We introduce and solve a model of fermions hopping between neighbouring sites on a line with random Brownian amplitudes and open boundary conditions driving the system out of equilibrium. The average dynamics reduces to that of the symmetric simple exclusion process. However, the full distribution encodes for a richer behaviour entailing fluctuating quantum coherences which survive in the steady limit. We determine exactly the system state steady distribution. We show that these out of equilibrium quantum fluctuations fulfil a large deviation principle and we present a method to recursively co…
We obtain the exact large deviation functions of the density profile and of the current, in the non-equilibrium steady state of a one dimensional symmetric simple exclusion process coupled to boundary reservoirs with slow rates. Compared to earlier results, where rates at the boundaries are comparable to the bulk ones, we show how macroscopic fluctuations are modified when the boundary rates are slower by an order of inverse of the system length.
The Quantum Symmetric Simple Exclusion Process (Q-SSEP) is a model for quantum stochastic dynamics of fermions hopping along the edges of a graph with Brownian noisy amplitudes and driven out-of-equilibrium by injection-extraction processes at a few vertices. We present a solution for the invariant probability measure of the one dimensional Q-SSEP in the infinite size limit by constructing the steady correlation functions of the system density matrix and quantum expectation values. These correlation functions code for a rich structure of fluctuating quantum correlations and coherences. Althoug…
For the two-sided Bernoulli initial condition with density $ρ_-$ (resp. $ρ_+$) to the left (resp. to the right), we study the distribution of a tagged particle in the one dimensional symmetric simple exclusion process. We obtain a formula for the moment generating function of the associated current in terms of a Fredholm determinant. Our arguments are based on a combination of techniques from integrable probability which have been developed recently for studying the asymmetric exclusion process and a subsequent intricate symmetric limit. An expression for the large deviation function of the ta…
We present the first exact solution for the time dependent equations of the macroscopic fluctuation theory (MFT) for the symmetric simple exclusion process by combining a generalization of the canonical Cole-Hopf transformation with the inverse scattering method. For the step initial condition with two densities, the associated Riemann-Hilbert problem is solved to determine exactly the optimal density profile and the response field which produce a required fluctuation, both at initial and final times. The large deviation function of the current is derived and coincides with the formula obtaine…
The one-dimensional symmetric exclusion process, the simplest interacting particle process, is a lattice-gas made of particles that hop symmetrically on a discrete line respecting hard-core exclusion. The system is prepared on the infinite lattice with a step initial profile with average densities $ρ_{+}$ and $ρ_{-}$ on the right and on the left of the origin. When $ρ_{+} = ρ_{-}$, the gas is at equilibrium and undergoes stationary fluctuations. When these densities are unequal, the gas is out of equilibrium and will remain so forever. A tracer, or a tagged particle, is initially located at th…
In the boundary driven symmetric simple exclusion process consider an open set $\ms O$ of density profiles which does not contain the stationary density profile. We prove that the first time the empirical measure visits the set $\ms O$ converges to an exponential distribution.
We verify the finite time fluctuation theorem for a linear Ising chain at its ends in contact with heat reservoirs. Analytic results are derived for a chain consisting of only two spins. The system can be mapped onto a model for particle transport, namely the symmetric exclusion process, in contact with thermal and particle reservoirs. We modify the symmetric exclusion process to represent a thermal engine and reproduce universal features of the efficiency at maximum power.
We examine the entropy of stationary nonequilibrium measures of boundary driven symmetric simple exclusion processes. In contrast with the Gibbs--Shannon entropy \cite{B, DLS2}, the entropy of nonequilibrium stationary states differs from the entropy of local equilibrium states.
In this article, we consider a one-dimensional symmetric exclusion process in weak contact with reservoirs at the boundary. In the diffusive time-scaling the empirical measure evolves according to the heat equation with Robin boundary conditions. We prove the associated dynamical large deviations principle.
The symmetric simple exclusion process is one of the simplest out-of-equilibrium systems for which the steady state is known. Its large deviation functional of the density has been computed in the past both by microscopic and macroscopic approaches. Here we obtain the leading finite size correction to this large deviation functional. The result is compared to the similar corrections for equilibrium systems.
We investigate the nature of the dynamically inactive phase of a simple symmetric exclusion process on a ring. We find that as the system's activity is tuned to a lower-than-average value the particles progressively lump into a single cluster, thereby forming a kink in the density profile. All dynamical regimes, and their finite size range of validity, are explicitly determined.
We show that the infinitesimal generator of the symmetric simple exclusion process, recast as a quantum spin-1/2 ferromagnetic Heisenberg model, can be solved by elementary techniques on the complete, complete bipartite, and related multipartite graphs. Some of the resulting infinitesimal generators are formally identical to homogeneous as well as mixed higher spins models. The degeneracies of the eigenspectra are described in detail, and the Clebsch-Gordan machinery needed to deal with arbitrary spin-s representations of the SU(2) is briefly developed. We mention in passing how our results fi…
We consider an exclusion process with long jumps in the box $Λ\_N=\{1, \ldots,N-1\}$, for $N \ge 2$, in contact with infinitely extended reservoirs on its left and on its right. The jump rate is described by a transition probability $p(\cdot)$ which is symmetric, with infinite support but with finite variance. The reservoirs add or remove particles with rate proportional to $κN^{-θ}$, where $κ>0$ and $θ\in\mathbb R$. If $θ>0$ (resp. $θ<0$) the reservoirs add and fastly remove (resp. slowly remove) particles in the bulk. According to the value of $θ$ we prove that the time evolution of the spat…
We study symmetric simple exclusion processes (SSEP) on a ring in the presence of uniformly moving multiple defects or disorders - a generalization of the model proposed earlier [Phys. Rev. E 89, 022138 (2014)]. The defects move with uniform velocity and change the particle hopping rates locally. We explore the collective effects of the defects on the spatial structure and transport properties of the system. We also introduce an SSEP with ordered sequential (sitewise) update and elucidate the close connection with our model.
We prove nonequilibrium fluctuations for the boundary driven symmetric simple exclusion process. We deduce from this result the stationary fluctuations.
For the symmetric simple exclusion process on an infinite line, we calculate exactly the fluctuations of the integrated current $Q_t$ during time $t$ through the origin when, in the initial condition, the sites are occupied with density $ρ_a$ on the negative axis and with density $ρ_b$ on the positive axis. All the cumulants of $Q_t$ grow like $\sqrt{t}$. In the range where $Q_t \sim \sqrt{t}$, the decay $\exp [-Q_t^3/t]$ of the distribution of $Q_t$ is non-Gaussian. Our results are obtained using the Bethe ansatz and several identities recently derived by Tracy and Widom for exclusion process…
We investigate the growth of the total number of particles in a symmetric exclusion process driven by a localized source. The average total number of particles entering an initially empty system grows with time as t^{1/2} in one dimension, t/log(t) in two dimensions, and linearly in higher dimensions. In one and two dimensions, the leading asymptotic behaviors for the average total number of particles are independent on the intensity of the source. We also discuss fluctuations of the total number of particles and determine the asymptotic growth of the variance in one dimension.
We show, using the macroscopic fluctuation theory of Bertini, De Sole, Gabrielli, Jona-Lasinio, and Landim, that the statistics of the current of the symmetric simple exclusion process (SSEP) connected to two reservoirs are the same on an arbitrary large finite domain in dimension $d$ as in the one dimensional case. Numerical results on squares support this claim while results on cubes exhibit some discrepancy. We argue that the results of the macroscopic fluctuation theory should be recovered by increasing the size of the contacts. The generalization to other diffusive systems is straightforw…
A system consisting of two parallel coupled channels where particles in one of them follow the rules of totally asymmetric exclusion processes (TASEP) and in another one move as in symmetric simple exclusion processes (SSEP) is investigated theoretically. Particles interact with each other via hard-core exclusion potential, and in the asymmetric channel they can only hop in one direction, while on the symmetric lattice particles jump in both directions with equal probabilities. Inter-channel transitions are also allowed at every site of both lattices. Stationary state properties of the system …
We investigate the role of the boundary in the symmetric simple exclusion process with competing nonlocal and local hopping events. With open boundaries, the system undergoes a first order phase transition from a finite density phase to an empty road phase as the nonlocal hopping rate increases. Using a cluster stability analysis, we determine the location of such an abrupt nonequilibrium phase transition, which agrees well with numerical results. Our cluster analysis provides a physical insight into the mechanism behind this transition. We also explain why the transition becomes discontinuous…
The Symmetric Exclusion Process (SEP), in which particles hop symmetrically on a discrete line with hard-core constraints, is a paradigmatic model of subdiffusion in confined systems. This anomalous behavior is a direct consequence of strong spatial correlations induced by the requirement that the particles cannot overtake each other. Even if this fact has been recognised qualitatively for a long time, up to now there is no full quantitative determination of these correlations. Here we study the joint probability distribution of an arbitrary number of tagged particles in the SEP. We determine …
Consider the symmetric exclusion process evolving on an interval and weakly interacting at the end-points with reservoirs. Denote by $I_{[0,T]} (\cdot)$ its dynamical large deviations functional and by $V(\cdot)$ the associated quasi-potential, defined as $V(γ) = \inf_{T>0} \inf_u I_{[0,T]} (u)$, where the infimum is carried over all trajectories $u$ such that $u(0) = \barρ$, $u(T) = γ$, and $\barρ$ is the stationary density profile. We derive the partial differential equation which describes the evolution of the optimal trajectory, and deduce from this result the formula obtained by Derrida, …
The dynamics of an asymmetric tracer in the symmetric simple exclusion process (SEP) is mapped, in the continuous scaling limit, to the local current through the origin in the zero-range process (ZRP) with a biased bond. This allows us to study the hydrodynamics of the SEP with an asymmetric tracer with a step initial condition, leading to the average displacement as a function of the bias and the densities on both sides. We then derive the cumulant generating function of the process in the high-density limit, by using the Macroscopic Fluctuation Theory and obtain agreement with the microscopi…
The Symmetric Exclusion Process (SEP), where particles hop on a 1D lattice with the restriction that there can only be one particle per site, is a paradigmatic model of interacting particle systems. Recently, it has been shown that the nature of the initial conditions - annealed or quenched - has a quantitative impact on the long-time properties of tracer diffusion. However, so far, all the studies in the quenched case focused on the low-density limit of the SEP. Here, we derive the cumulant generating function of the tracer position in the dense limit with quenched initial conditions. Importa…
A class of generalized exclusion processes parametrized by the maximal occupancy, $k\geq 1$, is investigated. For these processes with symmetric nearest-neighbor hopping, we compute the diffusion coefficient and show that it is independent on the spatial dimension. In the extreme cases of $k=1$ (simple symmetric exclusion process) and $k=\infty$ (non-interacting symmetric random walks) the diffusion coefficient is constant; for $2\leq k<\infty$, the diffusion coefficient depends on the density and the maximal occupancy $k$. We also study the evolution of a tagged particle. It exhibits a diffus…
In a recent study, (Jain et al 2007 Phys. Rev. Lett. 99 190601), a symmetric exclusion process with time-dependent hopping rates was introduced. Using simulations and a perturbation theory, it was shown that if the hopping rates at two neighboring sites of a closed ring vary periodically in time and have a relative phase difference, there is a net DC current which decreases inversely with the system size. In this work, we simplify and generalize our earlier treatment. We study a model where hopping rates at all sites vary periodically in time, and show that for certain choices of relative phas…
The large deviation properties of equilibrium (reversible) lattice gases are mathematically reasonably well understood. Much less is known in non--equilibrium, namely for non reversible systems. In this paper we consider a simple example of a non--equilibrium situation, the symmetric simple exclusion process in which we let the system exchange particles with the boundaries at two different rates. We prove a dynamical large deviation principle for the empirical density which describes the probability of fluctuations from the solutions of the hydrodynamic equation. The so called quasi potential,…
We calculate the first four cumulants of the integrated current of the one dimensional symmetric simple exclusion process of $N$ sites with open boundary conditions. For large system size $N$, the generating function of the integrated current depends on the densities $ρ_a$ and $ρ_b$ of the two reservoirs and on the fugacity $z$, the parameter conjugated to the integrated current, through a single parameter. Based on our expressions for these first four cumulants, we make a conjecture which leads to a prediction for all the higher cumulants. In the case $ρ_a=1$ and $ρ_b=0$, our conjecture gives…
We describe the extremal translation invariant stationary (ETIS) states of the facilitated exclusion process on $\mathbb{Z}$. In this model all particles on sites with one occupied and one empty neighbor jump at each integer time to the empty neighbor site, and if two particles attempt to jump into the same empty site we choose one randomly to succeed. The ETIS states are qualitatively different for densities $ρ<1/2$, $ρ=1/2$, and $1/2<ρ<1$, but in each density region we find states which may be grouped into families, each of which is in natural correspondence with the set of all ergodic measu…
As a simple model for single-file diffusion of hard core particles we investigate the one-dimensional symmetric exclusion process. We consider an open semi-infinite system where one end is coupled to an external reservoir of constant density $ρ^\ast$ and which initially is in an non-equilibrium state with bulk density $ρ_0$. We calculate the exact time-dependent two-point density correlation function $C_{k,l}(t)\equiv <n_k(t)n_l(t)>- <n_k(t)><n_l(t)>$ and the mean and variance of the integrated average net flux of particles $N(t)-N(0)$ that have entered (or left) the system up to time $t$. We …
We prove a comparison inequality between a system of independent random walkers and a system of random walkers which either interact by attracting each other -- a process which we call here the symmetric inclusion process (SIP) -- or repel each other -- a generalized version of the well-known symmetric exclusion process. As an application, new correlation inequalities are obtained for the SIP, as well as for some interacting diffusions which are used as models of heat conduction, -- the so-called Brownian momentum process, and the Brownian energy process. These inequalities are counterparts of…

Tracer dynamics in the Symmetric Exclusion Process, where hardcore particles diffuse on an infinite one-dimensional lattice, is a paradigmatic model of anomalous diffusion. While the equilibrium situation has received a lot of attention, the case where the tracer is driven by an external force, which provides a minimal model of nonequilibrium transport in confined crowded environments, remains largely unexplored. Indeed, the only available analytical results concern the means of both the position of the tracer and the lattice occupation numbers in its frame of reference, and higher-order momen…
We consider single-file diffusion in an open system with two species $A,B$ of particles. At the boundaries we assume different reservoir densities which drive the system into a non-equilibrium steady state. As a model we use an one-dimensional two-component simple symmetric exclusion process with two different hopping rates $D_A,D_B$ and open boundaries. For investigating the dynamics in the hydrodynamic limit we derive a system of coupled non-linear diffusion equations for the coarse-grained particle densities. The relaxation of the initial density profile is analyzed by numerical integration…
The spectrum of Hamiltonian (Markov matrix) of a multi-species asymmetric simple exclusion process on a ring is studied. The dynamical exponent concerning the relaxation time is found to coincide with the one-species case. It implies that the system belongs to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang or Edwards-Wilkinson universality classes depending on whether the hopping rate is asymmetric or symmetric, respectively. Our derivation exploits a poset structure of the particle sectors, leading to a new spectral duality and inclusion relations. The Bethe ansatz integrability is also demonstrated.
We use the macroscopic fluctuation theory (MFT) to evaluate the probability distribution P of extreme values of integrated current J at a specified time t=T in the symmetric simple exclusion process (SSEP) on an infinite line. As shown recently [Phys. Rev. E 89, 010101(R) (2014)], the SSEP belongs to the elliptic universality class. Here, for very large currents, the diffusion terms of the MFT equations can be neglected compared with the terms coming from the shot noise. Using the hodograph transformation and an additional change of variables, we reduce the "inviscid" MFT equations to Laplace'…
We analyze the dynamical phases of the current-biased 1D and multi-lane open asymmetric simple exclusion processes (ASEP), using matrix product states and the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm. In the 1D ASEP, we present a systematic numerical study of the current cumulant generating function and its derivatives, which serve as dynamical phase order parameters. We further characterize the microscopic structure of the phases from local observables and the entanglement spectrum. In the multi-lane ASEP, which may be viewed as finite width 2D strip, we use the same approach and…
We demonstrate exciting similarities between classical and quantum many body systems whose microscopic dynamics are composed of non-reciprocal three-site facilitated exclusion processes. We show that the quantum analogue of the classical facilitated process engineers an interesting $quantum$ $absorbing$ $transition$ where the quantum particles transit from an unentangled direct-product absorbing phase to an entangled steady state with a finite current at density $ρ=1/2$. In the generalised classical facilitated exclusion process, which includes independent hopping of particles with rate $p$, o…
We study the behaviour of a Symmetric Exclusion Process (SEP) in presence of stochastic resetting where the configuration of the system is reset to a step-like profile with a fixed rate $r.$ We show that the presence of resetting affects both the stationary and dynamical properties of SEP strongly. We compute the exact time-dependent density profile and show that the stationary state is characterized by a non-trivial inhomogeneous profile in contrast to the flat one for $r=0.$ We also show that for $r>0$ the average diffusive current grows linearly with time $t,$ in stark contrast to the $\sqr…
We study the dynamics of symmetric exclusion process (SEP) in the presence of stochastic resetting to two possible specific configurations -- with rate $r_1$ (respectively, $r_2$) the system is reset to a step-like configuration where all the particles are clustered in the left (respectively, right) half of the system. We show that this dichotomous resetting leads to a range of rich behaviour, both dynamical and in the stationary state. We calculate the exact stationary profile in the presence of this dichotomous resetting and show that the diffusive current grows linearly in time, but unlike …
Simple exclusion processes for particles moving along two parallel lattices and jumping between them are theoretically investigated for asymmetric rates of transition between the channels. An approximate theoretical approach, that describes the particle dynamics exactly in any vertical cluster of two parallel sites and neglects the correlations between the different vertical clusters, is applied to calculate stationary-state density profiles, currents and phase diagrams. Surprisingly, it is found that asymmetry in the coupling between the channels leads to a very complex phase behavior that is…
We obtain the large deviation functional of a density profile for the asymmetric exclusion process of L sites with open boundary conditions when the asymmetry scales like 1/L. We recover as limiting cases the expressions derived recently for the symmetric (SSEP) and the asymmetric (ASEP) cases. In the ASEP limit, the non linear differential equation one needs to solve can be analysed by a method which resembles the WKB method.
