We describe algorithms based on invariant theory to solve problems on the geometry of curves, mainly those of genus 2, 3 and 4. New theoretical results building on the first author's PhD thesis are also included.
Some of the 95 families of weighted K3 hypersurfaces have been known to have the isometric lattice polarizations. It is shown that weighted K3 hypersurfaces in such families are to one-to-one correspond by explicitly constructing the monomial birational morphisms among the weighted projective spaces. All the weight systems having the isometric Picard lattices commonly possess an anticanonical sublinear system, being confirmed that the Picard lattice of the sublinear system we obtained is the same as those of the complete linear systems.
Mumford defined a natural isomorphism between the intermediate jacobian of a conic-bundle over $P^2$ and the Prym variety of a naturally defined étale double cover of the discrminant curve of the conic-bundle. Clemens and Griffiths used this isomorphism to give a proof of the irrationality of a smooth cubic threefold and Beauville later generalized the isomorphism to intermediate jacobians of odd-dimensional quadric-bundles over $P^2$. We further generalize the isomorphism to the primitive cohomology of a smooth cubic hypersurface in $P^n$.
We find and describe unexpected isomorphisms between two very different objects associated to hypersurface singularities. One object is the Milnor algebra of a function, while the other object associated to a singularity is the local ring of the flatness stratum of the singular locus in a miniversal deformation, an invariant of the contact class of a defining function. Such isomorphisms exist for unimodal hypersurface singularities. However, for the moment it is badly understood, which principle causes these isomorphisms and how far this observation generalises. Here we also provide an algorit…
For a complex algebraic variety $X$, we introduce higher $p$-Du Bois singularity by imposing canonical isomorphisms between the sheaves of Kähler differential forms $Ω_X^q$ and the shifted graded pieces of the Du Bois complex $\underlineΩ_X^q$ for $q\le p$. If $X$ is a reduced hypersurface, we show that higher $p$-Du~Bois singularity coincides with higher $p$-log canonical singularity, generalizing a well-known theorem for $p=0$. The assertion that $p$-log canonicity implies $p$-Du Bois has been proved by Mustata, Olano, Popa, and Witaszek quite recently as a corollary of two theorems assertin…
For each family of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in toric varieties, Batyrev has proposed a possible mirror partner (which is also a family of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces). We explain a natural construction of the isomorphism between certain Hodge groups of these hypersurfaces, as predicted by mirror symmetry, which we call the monomial-divisor mirror map. We indicate how this map can be interpreted as the differential of the expected mirror isomorphism between the moduli spaces of the two Calabi-Yau manifolds. We formulate a very precise conjecture about the form of that mirror isomorphism, which whe…
The well-known Mather-Yau theorem says that the isomorphism type of the local ring of an isolated complex hypersurface singularity is determined by its Tjurina algebra. It is also well known that this result is wrong as stated for power series f in K[[x]] over fields K of positive characteristic. In this note we show that, however, also in positive characteristic the isomorphism type of an isolated hypersurface singularity f is determined by an Artinian algebra, namely by a "higher Tjurina algebra" for sufficiently high index, for which we give an effective bound. We prove also a similar versi…
The moduli space M_0 of semi-stable rank 2 vector bundles with fixed trivial determinant over a non-hyperelliptic curve C of genus 3 is isomorphic to a quartic hypersurface in P^7 (Coble's quartic). We show that M_0 is self-dual and that its polar map associates to a stable bundle E \in M_0 a bundle F which is characterized by dim H^0(C, E \otimes F) = 4. The projective space PH^0(C, E \otimes F) is equipped with a net of quadrics Πand it is shown that the map which associates to E \in M_0 the isomorphism class of the plane quartic Hessian curve of Πis a dominant map to the moduli space of gen…
In this paper we study the isomorphism classes of Artinian Gorenstein local rings with socle degree three by means of Macaulay's inverse system. We prove that their classification is equivalent to the projective classification of the hypersurfaces of $\mathbb P ^{n }$ of degree three. This is an unexpected result because it reduces the study of this class of local rings to the homogeneous case. The result has applications in problems concerning the punctual Hilbert scheme $Hilb_d (\mathbb P^n)$ and in relation to the problem of the rationality of the Poincaré series of local rings.
In noncommutative algebraic geometry, noncommutative quadric hypersurfaces are major objects of study. In this paper, we focus on studying noncommutative conics $\operatorname{Proj_{nc}} A$ embedded into Calabi-Yau quantum projective planes. In particular, we give complete classifications of homogeneous coordinate algebras $A$ of noncommutative conics up to isomorphism of graded algebras, and of noncommutive conics $\operatorname{Proj_{nc}} A$ up to isomorphism of noncommutative schemes.
For a nondegenerate homogeneous polynomial $f\in\mathbb{C}[z_0, \dots, z_{n+1}]$ with degree $n+2$, we can obtain a $tt^*$ structure from the Landau-Ginzburg model $(\C^{n+2}, f)$ and a (new) $tt^*$ structure on the Calabi-Yau hypersurface defined by the zero locus of $f$ in $\C P^{n+1}$. We can prove that the big residue map considered by Steenbrink gives an isomorphism between the two $tt^*$ structures. We also build the correspondence for non-Calabi-Yau cases, and it turns out that only partial structure can be preserved. As an application, we show that the $tt^*$ geometry structure of Land…
We study an analytically irreducible algebroid germ (X, 0) of complex singularity by considering the filtrations of its analytic algebra, and their associated graded rings, induced by the divisorial valuations associated to the irreducible components of the exceptional divisor of the normalized blow-up of the normalization (Y, 0) of (X, 0), centered at the point 0 of Y. If (X, 0) is a quasi-ordinary hypersurface singularity, we obtain that the associated graded ring is an algebra of finite type over the field of complex numbers, namely the coordinate ring of a non necessarily normal affine tor…
Let $X$ be a compact connected Riemann surface of genus $g$, with $g\geq 2$, and ${\cal M}_ξ$ a smooth moduli space of fixed determinant semistable vector bundles of rank $n$, with $n\geq 2$, over $X$. Take a smooth anticanonical divisor $D$ on ${\cal M}_ξ$. So $D$ is a Calabi-Yau variety. We compute the number of moduli of $D$, namely $\dim H^1(D, T_D)$, to be $3g-4 + \dim H^0({\cal M}_ξ, K^{-1}_{{\cal M}_ξ})$. Denote by $\cal N$ the moduli space of all such pairs $(X',D')$, namely $D'$ is a smooth anticanonical divisor on a smooth moduli space of semistable vector bundles over the Riemann su…
Let $ \mathcal{D} = \{D_{1}, \ldots, D_{\ell}\} $ be an arrangement of smooth hypersurfaces with normal crossings on the complex projective space $ \mathbb{P}^{n} $ and let $ Ω^{1}_{\mathbb{P}^{n}}(log \mathcal{D}) $ be the logarithmic bundle attached to it. Our aim is to study the injectivity of the correspondence $ \mathcal{D} \longrightarrow Ω^{1}_{\mathbb{P}^{n}}(log \mathcal{D}) $. In order to do that, we first show that $ Ω^{1}_{\mathbb{P}^{n}}(log \mathcal{D}) $ admits a resolution of length $ 1 $ depending on the degrees and on the equations of $ D_{1}, \ldots, D_{\ell} $. Then, we pro…
We describe a vector bundle $\sE$ on a smooth $n$-dimensional ACM variety in terms of its cohomological invariants $H^i_*(\sE)$, $1\leq i \leq n-1$, and certain graded modules of "socle elements" built from $\sE$. In this way we give a generalization of the Horrocks correspondence. We prove existence theorems where we construct vector bundles from these invariants and uniqueness theorems where we show that these data determine a bundle up to isomorphisms. The cases of the quadric hypersurface in $\mathbb P^{n+1}$ and the Veronese surface in $\mathbb P^5$ are considered in more detail.
In this paper we describe the geometry of the 2m-dimensional Fano manifold G parametrizing (m-1)-planes in a smooth complete intersection Z of two quadric hypersurfaces in the complex projective space P^{2m+2}, for m>0. We show that there are exactly 2^{2m+2} distinct isomorphisms in codimension one between G and the blow-up of P^{2m} at 2m+3 general points, parametrized by the 2^{2m+2} distinct m-planes contained in Z, and describe these rational maps explicitly. We also describe the cones of nef, movable and effective divisors of G, as well as their dual cones of curves. Finally, we determin…
