Context. The Vista Variables in the Via Lactea (VVV) near-infrared variability survey explores some of the most complex regions of the Milky Way bulge and disk in terms of high extinction and high crowding. Aims. We add a new wavelength dimension to the optical information available at the American Association of Variable Star Observers International Variable Star Index (VSX-AAVSO) catalogue to test the VVV survey near-infrared photometry to better characterise these objects. Methods. We cross-matched the VVV and the VSX-AAVSO catalogues along with Gaia Data Release 2 photometry and parallax. Results. We present a catalogue that includes accurate individual coordinates, near-infrared magnitudes (ZY JHKs), extinctions Aks, and distances based on Gaia parallaxes. We also show the near-infrared CMDs and spatial distributions for the different VSX types of variable stars, including important distance indicators, such as RR Lyrae, Cepheids, and Miras. By analysing the photometric flags in our catalogue, we found that about 20% of the stars with measured and verified variability are flagged as non-stellar sources, even when they are outside of the saturation and/or noise regimes. Additionally, we pair-matched our sample with the VIVA catalogue and found that more than half of our sources are missing from the VVV variability list, mostly due to observations with low signal-to-noise ratio or photometric problems with a low percentage due to failures in the selection process. Conclusions. Our results suggest that the current knowledge of the variability in the Galaxy is biased to nearby stars with low extinction. The present catalogue also provides the groundwork for characterising the results of future large variability surveys such as the Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time in the highly crowded and reddened regions of the Galactic plane, as well as follow-up campaigns for
Near-IR data of Classical Novae contain useful information about the ejected gas mass and the thermal emission by dust formed during eruption, and provide independent methods to classify the objects according to the colour of their progenitors, and the fading rate and features seen after eruption. The VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea survey (VVV) is a near-IR ESO Public Survey mapping the MW bulge and southern plane. Data taken during 2010-2011 covered the entire area in the JHKs bands plus some epochs in Ks-band of the ongoing VVV variability campaign. We used the novae list provided by VSX/…
We present VIRAC version 1, a near-infrared proper motion and parallax catalogue of the VISTA VVV survey for 312,587,642 unique sources averaged across all overlapping pawprint and tile images covering 560 deg$^2$ of the bulge of the Milky Way and southern disk. The catalogue includes 119 million high quality proper motion measurements, of which 47 million have statistical uncertainties below 1 mas yr$^{-1}$. In the 11$<K_s<$14 magnitude range the high quality motions have a median uncertainty of 0.67 mas yr$^{-1}$. The catalogue also includes 6,935 sources with quality-controlled 5 $σ$ parall…
Knowledge of the stellar content near the Sun is important for a broad range of topics ranging from the search for planets to the study of Milky Way structure. The most powerful method for identifying potentially nearby stars is proper motion (PM) surveys. All old optical surveys avoid, or are at least substantially incomplete, near the Galactic plane. The depth and breadth of the "Vista Variables in Via Lactea" (VVV) near-IR survey significantly improves this situation. Taking advantage of the VVV survey database, we have measured PMs in the densest regions of the MW bulge and southern plane …
The intrinsically faint M dwarfs are the most numerous stars in the Galaxy, have main-sequence lifetimes longer than the Hubble time, and host some of the most interesting planetary systems known to date. Their identification and classification throughout the Galaxy is crucial to unravel the processes involved in the formation of planets, stars and the Milky Way. The ESO Public Survey VVV is a deep near-IR survey mapping the Galactic bulge and southern plane. The VVV b201 tile, located in the border of the bulge, was specifically selected for the characterisation of M dwarfs. We used VISTA pho…
The VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea (VVV) survey obtained near-infrared photometry toward the Galactic bulge and the southern disc plane for a decade (2010 - 2019). We designed a modified Lomb-Scargle method to search for large-amplitude ($Δ$Ks > 1.5 mag) mid to long-term periodic variables (P > 10 d) in the 2nd version of VVV Infrared Astrometric Catalogue (VIRAC2-$β$). In total, 1520 periodic sources were discovered, including 59 candidate periodic outbursting young stellar objects (YSOs), based on the unique morphology of the phase-folded light curves, proximity to Galactic HII regions an…
The giant HII region W31 hosts the populous star cluster W31-CL and others projected on or in the surroundings. The most intriguing object is the stellar cluster SGR1806-20, which appears to be related to a Luminous Blue Variable (LBV) - a luminous supergiant star. We used the deep VVV J-,H-and K$_s$-bands photometry combined with 2MASS data in order to address the distance andother physical and structural properties of the clusters W31-CL, BDS 113 and SGR1806-20. Field-decontaminated photometry was used to analyse colour-magnitude diagrams and stellar radial density profiles, using procedures…
We present the near-infrared observations of population II Cepheids in the Galactic bulge from VVV survey. We identify 340 population II Cepheids in the Galactic bulge from VVV survey based on their match with OGLE-III Catalogue. The single-epoch $JH$ and multi-epoch $K_s$ observations complement the accurate periods and optical $(VI)$ mean-magnitudes from OGLE. The sample consisting of BL Herculis and W Virginis subtypes is used to derive period-luminosity relations after correcting mean-magnitudes for the extinction. Our $K_s$-band period-luminosity relation, $K_s = -2.189(0.056)~[\log(P) - …
We present the first results of a project aiming to trace the spatial structure of the Milky Way using detached eclipsing binaries (DEBs) as distance indicators. A sample of DEBs from the OGLE-II catalogue was selected and their near infrared photometry was taken from the Vista Variables in the Via Lactea (VVV) survey. The I band OGLE-II light curves are used to create models of the DEBs, which together with the VVV photometry are compared with a set of theoretical isochrones. After correcting for stellar reddening, we find a set of absolute physical parameters of components of a given binary,…
M-dwarf stars are the dominant stellar population in the MilkyWay and they are important for a wide variety of astrophysical topics. The Gaia mission has delivered a superb collection of data, nevertheless, ground-based photometric surveys are still needed to study faint objects. Therefore, the present work aims to identify and characterise M-dwarf stars in the direction of the Galactic bulge using photometric data and with the help of Virtual Observatory tools. Using parallax measurements and proper motions from Gaia Data Release 3, in addition to different colour-cuts based on VISTA filters,…
With the advent of large-scale photometric surveys of the sky, modern science witnesses the dawn of big data astronomy, where automatic handling and discovery are paramount. In this context, classification tasks are among the key capabilities a data reduction pipeline must possess in order to compile reliable datasets, to accomplish data processing with an efficiency level impossible to achieve by means of detailed processing and human intervention. The VISTA Variables of the Vía Láctea Survey, in the southern part of the Galactic disc, comprises multi-epoch photometric data necessary for the …

In order to characterize 22 new globular cluster (GC) candidates in the Galactic bulge, we present their colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) and Ks-band luminosity functions (LFs) using the near-infrared VVV database as well as Gaia-DR2 proper motion dataset. CMDs were obtained, on one hand, after properly decontaminating the observed diagrams from background/foreground disc stars and other sources. On the other hand, CMDs were also obtained based upon star selection in proper motion diagrams. Taking into account our deep CMDs and LFs analyses, we find that 17 out of 22 new GC candidates may be r…
NGC 6357 is an active star-forming region located in the Sagittarius arm displaying several star clusters, which makes it a very interesting target to investigate star formation and early cluster evolution. We explore NGC 6357 with the "VISTA Variables in the Vía a Láctea" (VVV) photometry of seven embedded clusters (ECs), and one open cluster (OC) projected in the outskirts of the complex.Photometric and structural properties (age, reddening, distance, core and total radii) of the star clusters are derived. VVV saturated stars are replaced by their 2MASS counterparts. Field-decontaminated VVV…
In light of substantial new discoveries of hot subdwarfs by ongoing spectroscopic surveys and the availability of new all-sky data from ground-based photometric surveys and the Gaia mission Data Release 2, we compiled an updated catalogue of the known hot subdwarf stars. The catalogue contains 5874 unique sources including 528 previously unknown hot subdwarfs and provides multi-band photometry, astrometry from Gaia, and classifications based on spectroscopy and colours. This new catalogue provides atmospheric parameters of 2187 stars and radial velocities of 2790 stars from the literature. Usi…
Context. The Vista Variables in the Vía Láctea (VVV) ESO Public Survey is a variability survey of the Milky Way bulge and an adjacent section of the disk carried out from 2010 on ESO Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA). VVV will eventually deliver a deep near-IR atlas with photometry and positions in five passbands (ZYJHK_S) and a catalogue of 1-10 million variable point sources - mostly unknown - which require classifications. Aims. The main goal of the VVV Templates Project, that we introduce in this work, is to develop and test the machine-learning algorithms for the…
We present the first catalogue of point-source UV-excess sources selected from the UVEX survey. UVEX images the Northern Galactic Plane in the U, g, r and HeI5875 bands in the Galactic latitude range -5deg<b<+5deg. Through an automated algorithm, which works on a field-to-field basis, we select blue UV-excess sources in 211 square degrees from the (U-g) vs. (g-r) colour-colour diagram and the g vs. (U-g) and g vs. (g-r) colour-magnitude diagrams. The UV-excess catalogue covers the magnituderange 14<g<22.5, contains 2170 sources and consists of a mix of white dwarfs, post-common-envelope object…
The Geneva seven-colour photometric system is successfully applied to the study of various astrophysical objects. It measures the slope of the Paschen continuum, the Balmer discontinuity, and blocking absorption due to hydrogen or metallic lines. One of its greatest strengths is its intrinsic homogeneity. A new catalogue of the available measurements was generated, 30 years after the last publication. The identifications for the individual stars were cross-checked on the basis of the Gaia and 2MASS catalogues. The high precision coordinates together with proper motions (if available) are inclu…
We present a catalogue of 551,214 main-sequence stars in the local ($d < 2$ kpc) Galactic thick disk and halo, based on a search of stars with large proper motions ($μ_{\mathrm{tot}} > 40.0$ mas/yr) in the Gaia Early Data Release 3. We derive photometric metallicity calibrated from the colour-luminosity-metallicity distribution of 20,047 stars with spectroscopic metallicities, collected from various spectroscopic surveys, including SDSS SEGUE/APOGEE, GALAH DR3, and LAMOST DR6. We combine these results to construct an empirical colour-magnitude-metallicity grid, which can be used to estimate ph…

The windows of low extinction in the Milky Way (MW) plane are rare but important because they enable us to place structural constraints on the opposite side of the Galaxy, which has hitherto been done rarely. We use the near-infrared (near-IR) images of the VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea (VVV) Survey to build extinction maps and to identify low extinction windows towards the Southern Galactic plane. Here we report the discovery of VVV WIN 1713$-$3939, a very interesting window with relatively uniform and low extinction conveniently placed very close to the Galactic plane. The new window of …
Testing the asteroseismic estimates of stellar radii with surface brightness-colour relations and {\it Gaia} DR3 parallaxes. II. Red giants and red clump stars from the {\it Kepler} catalogue
We present a catalogue of 618 high amplitude infrared variable stars (1 < DeltaK < 5 mag) detected by the two widely separated epochs of 2.2 um data in the UKIDSS Galactic plane survey, from searches covering 1470 deg^2. Most were discovered by a search of all fields at 30 < l < 230 deg. Sources include new dusty Mira variables, three new CV candidates, a blazar and a peculiar source that may be an interacting binary system. However, c. 60 per cent are YSOs, based on spatial association with star forming regions at distances ranging from 300 pc to over 10 kpc. This confirms our initial result …
We present a homogeneous catalogue for blue straggler, red giant branch, horizontal branch and main-sequence turn-off stars in a sample of 35 clusters taken from the ACS Survey for Globular Clusters. As a result of the superior photometry and relatively large field of view offered by the ACS data, this new catalogue is a significant improvement upon the one presented in Leigh, Sills & knigge (2007). Using our catalogue, we study and compare the radial distributions of the different stellar populations. We have confirmed our previous result (Knigge, Leigh & Sills 2009) that there is a clear, bu…
We present the discovery of 816 high amplitude infrared variable stars ($ΔK_{\rm s} >$ 1 mag) in 119 deg$^2$ of the Galactic midplane covered by the Vista Variables in the Via Lactea (VVV) survey. Almost all are new discoveries and about 50$\%$ are YSOs. This provides further evidence that YSOs are the commonest high amplitude infrared variable stars in the Galactic plane. In the 2010-2014 time series of likely YSOs we find that the amplitude of variability increases towards younger evolutionary classes (class I and flat-spectrum sources) except on short timescales ($<$25 days) where this tren…
Context: Blue horizontal-branch stars are very old objects that can be used as markers in studies of the Galactic structure and formation history. To create a clean sky catalogue of blue horizontal-branch stars, we cross-matched the Gaia data release 2 (DR2) dataset with existing reference catalogues to define selection criteria based on Gaia DR2 parameters. Following the publication of Gaia early data release 3 (EDR3), these methods were verified and subsequently applied to this latest release. Aims: The purpose of this catalogue is to identify a set of blue horizontal-branch star candidates …
The spatial morphological study of studied clusters is carried out through the identified probable members within them. The field stars decontamination is performed by the statistical cleaning approach (depends on the magnitude and colour of stars within the field and cluster regions). The CMRD (colour magnitude ratio diagram) approach is used to separate stellar sequences of the cluster systems. The age, distance and reddening of each cluster are estimated through the visual inspection of best fitted isochrone in colour magnitude diagrams(CMDs). The mean proper motion values of clusters are o…
In preparation for the upcoming all-sky data releases of the Gaia mission we compiled a catalogue of known hot subdwarf stars and candidates drawn from the literature and yet unpublished databases. The catalogue contains 5613 unique sources and provides multi-band photometry from the ultraviolet to the far infrared, ground based proper motions, classifications based on spectroscopy and colours, published atmospheric parameters, radial velocities and light curve variability information. Using several different techniques we removed outliers and misclassified objects. By matching this catalogue …
R Coronae Borealis stars (RCBs) are hydrogen-deficient and carbon-rich supergiant stars. They are very rare, as only $\sim50$ are actually known in our Galaxy. Interestingly, RCBs are strongly suspected to be the evolved merger product of two white dwarfs and could therefore be an important tool to understand Supernovae type Ia in the double degenerate scenario. Constraints on the spatial distribution and the formation rate of such stars are needed to picture their origin and test it in the context of actual population synthesis results. To do so, it is crucial to increase significantly the nu…
Gaia Data Release 3 provides novel flux-calibrated low-resolution spectrophotometry for about 220 million sources in the wavelength range 330nm - 1050nm (XP spectra). Synthetic photometry directly tied to a flux in physical units can be obtained from these spectra for any passband fully enclosed in this wavelength range. We describe how synthetic photometry can be obtained from XP spectra, illustrating the performance that can be achieved under a range of different conditions - for example passband width and wavelength range - as well as the limits and the problems affecting it. Existing top-q…
Based on data from the ESA Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2) and several ground-based, multi-band photometry surveys we compiled an all-sky catalogue of $39\,800$ hot subluminous star candidates selected in Gaia DR2 by means of colour, absolute magnitude and reduced proper motion cuts. We expect the majority of the candidates to be hot subdwarf stars of spectral type B and O, followed by blue horizontal branch stars of late B-type (HBB), hot post-AGB stars, and central stars of planetary nebulae. The contamination by cooler stars should be about $10\%$. The catalogue is magnitude limited to Gaia $G<19…
In light of substantial new discoveries of hot subdwarfs by ongoing spectroscopic surveys and the availability of the Gaia mission Early Data Release 3 (EDR3), we compiled new releases of two catalogues of hot subluminous stars: The data release 3 (DR3) catalogue of the known hot subdwarf stars contains 6,616 unique sources and provides multi-band photometry, and astrometry from Gaia EDR3 as well as classifications based on spectroscopy and colours. This is an increase of 742 objects over the DR2 catalogue. This new catalogue provides atmospheric parameters for 3,087 stars and radial velocitie…
We present a new luminosity-colour relation based on trigonometric parallaxes for thin disc main-sequence stars in SDSS photometry. We matched stars from the newly reduced Hipparcos catalogue with the ones taken from 2MASS All-Sky Catalogue of Point Sources, and applied a series of constraints, i.e. relative parallax errors ($σ_π/π\leq0.05$), metallicity ($-0.30\leq[M/H]\leq0.20$ dex), age ($0\leq t \leq 10$ Gyr) and surface gravity ($\log g>4$), and obtained a sample of thin disc main-sequence stars. Then, we used our previous transformation equations (Bilir et al. 2008a) between SDSS and 2MA…
We present VIVACE, the VIrac VAriable Classification Ensemble, a catalogue of variable stars extracted from an automated classification pipeline for the Vista Variables in the Vía Láctea (VVV) infrared survey of the Galactic bar/bulge and southern disc. Our procedure utilises a two-stage hierarchical classifier to first isolate likely variable sources using simple variability summary statistics and training sets of non-variable sources from the Gaia early third data release, and then classify candidate variables using more detailed light curve statistics and training labels primarily from OGLE…
The relevance of M dwarfs in the search for potentially habitable Earth-sized planets has grown significantly in the last years. In our on-going effort to comprehensively and accurately characterise confirmed and potential planet-hosting M dwarfs, in particular for the CARMENES survey, we have carried out a comprehensive multi-band photometric analysis involving spectral energy distributions, luminosities, absolute magnitudes, colours, and spectral types, from which we have derived basic astrophysical parameters. We have carefully compiled photometry in 20 passbands from the ultraviolet to the…
The high extinction and extreme source crowding of the central regions of the Milky Way are serious obstacles to the study of the structure and stellar population of the Galactic centre (GC). Existing surveys that cover the GC region (2MASS, UKIDSS, VVV, SIRIUS) do not have the necessary high angular resolution. Therefore, a high-angular-resolution survey in the near infrared is crucial to improve the state of the art. Here, we present the GALACTICNUCLEUS catalogue, a near infrared $JHK_s$ high-angular-resolution ($0.2''$) survey of the nuclear bulge of the Milky Way. We explain in detail the …
The basic physical parameters of a poorly studied open cluster NGC 110 and an unstudied open cluster DOLIDZE 14 are estimated in the present study using the archival PPMXL and WISE catalogues. The radius of both the clusters are estimated by fitting the modified King's empirical model on their stellar density profiles. The other basic parameters of the clusters such as distance, reddening, and age are obtained by visual fitting of the Marigo's solar metallicity isochrone on their IR colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs). The mean-proper motion of the clusters are estimated through the individual pr…
We present a catalogue of 247 photometrically and spectroscopically confirmed fainter classical Be stars (13 < r < 16) in the direction of the Perseus Arm of the Milky Way (-1 < b < +4, 120 < l < 140). The catalogue consists of 181 IPHAS-selected new classical Be stars, in addition to 66 objects that were studied by Raddi et al. (2013) more closely, and 3 stars identified as classical Be stars in earlier work. This study more than doubles the number known in the region. Photometry spanning 0.6 to 5 micron, spectral types, and interstellar reddenings are given for each object. The spectral type…
We present a catalogue of candidate Hα emission and absorption line sources and blue objects in the Galactic Bulge Survey (GBS) region. We use a point source catalogue of the GBS fields (two strips of (l x b) = (6 x 1) degrees centred at b = 1.5 above and below the Galactic centre), covering the magnitude range 16 < r' < 22.5. We utilize (r'-i', r'-Hα) colour-colour diagrams to select Hα emission and absorption line candidates, and also identify blue objects (compared to field stars) using the r'-i' colour index. We identify 1337 Hα emission line candidates and 336 Hα absorption line candidate…
With available Virtual Observatory tools, we looked for new bright blue high proper motion objects in the entire sky: white dwarfs, hot subdwarfs, runaway OB stars, and early-type stars in nearby young moving groups. We performed an all-sky cross-match between the optical Tycho-2 and near-infrared 2MASS catalogues with Aladin, and selected objects with proper motions >50mas/yr and colours Vt-Ks<-0.5mag with TOPCAT. We also collected multi-wavelength photometry, constructed the spectral energy distributions and estimated effective temperatures from fits to atmospheric models with VOSA for the m…
We study the photometric properties of stars in the data archive of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), the prime aim being to understand the photometric calibration over the entire data set. It is confirmed that the photometric calibration for point sources has been made overall tightly against the SDSS standard stars. We have also confirmed that photometric synthesis of the SDSS spectrophotometric data gives broad band fluxes that agree with broad band photometry with errors no more than 0.04 mag and little tilt along the wide range of colours, verifying that the response functions of the S…
The catalogue contains 199 confirmed cases of binary systems containing at least one pulsating component of δ Scuti type. The sample is divided into subgroups in order to describe the properties and characteristics of the δ Sct type stars in binaries according to their Roche geometry. Demographics describing quantitatively our knowledge for these systems as well as the distributions of their pulsating components in the Mass-Radius, Colour-Magnitude and Evolutionary Status-Temperature diagrams are presented and discussed. It is shown that a threshold of ~13 days of the orbital period regarding …
Extremely-low mass white dwarf stars (ELMs) are M < 0.3 MSun helium-core white dwarfs born either as a result of a common-envelope phase or after a stable Roche-lobe overflow episode in a multiple system. The Universe is not old enough for ELMs to have formed through single-star evolution channels. As remnants of binary evolution, ELMs can shed light onto the poorly understood phase of common-envelope evolution and provide constraints to the physics of mass accretion. Most known ELMs will merge in less than a Hubble time, providing an important contribution to the signal to be detected by upco…
We present the compilation of the Fifth Catalogue of Nearby Stars (CNS5), based on astrometric and photometric data from Gaia EDR3 and Hipparcos, and supplemented with parallaxes from ground-based astrometric surveys carried out in the infrared. The aim of the CNS5 is to provide the most complete sample of objects in the solar neighbourhood. For all known stars and brown dwarfs in the 25 pc sphere around the Sun, basic astrometric and photometric parameters are given. Furthermore, we provide the colour-magnitude diagram and various luminosity functions of the stellar content in the solar neigh…
We present a catalogue of 1602 white dwarf-main sequence binaries (WDMS) from the spectroscopic Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 6 (SDSS DR6). Among these we identify 440 as new WDMS binaries. We select WDMS binary candidates from template fitting all 1.27 million DR6 spectra, using combined constraints in both $χ^{2}$ and signal-to-noise ratio. In addition, we use Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) and UKIRT Infrared Sky Survey (UKIDSS) magnitudes to search for objects in which one of the two components dominates the SDSS spectrum. We use a decomposition/fitting technique to measure the e…
We explored the AllWISE catalogue of the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer mission and identified Young Stellar Object candidates. Reliable 2MASS and WISE photometric data combined with Planck dust opacity values were used to build our dataset and to find the best classification scheme. A sophisticated statistical method, the Support Vector Machine (SVM) is used to analyse the multi-dimensional data space and to remove source types identified as contaminants (extragalactic sources, main sequence stars, evolved stars and sources related to the interstellar medium). Objects listed in the SIMBA…
The Outburst Catalogue contains a wide variety of observational properties for 722 dwarf nova-type (DN) cataclysmic variables (CVs) and 309 CVs of other types from the Catalina Real-time Transient Survey. In particular, it includes the apparent outburst and quiescent V-band magnitudes, duty cycles, limits on the recurrence time, upper- and lower-limits on the distance and absolute quiescent magnitudes, colour information, orbital parameters, and X-ray counterparts. These properties were determined by means of a classification script presented in this paper. The DN in the catalogue show a corre…
