Twisted bilayers of two-dimensional materials, such as twisted bilayer graphene, often feature flat electronic bands that enable the observation of electron correlation effects. In this work, we study the electronic structure of twisted transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) homo- and heterobilayers that are obtained by combining MoS$_2$, WS$_2$, MoSe$_2$ and WSe$_2$ monolayers, and show how flat band properties depend on the chemical composition of the bilayer as well as its twist angle. We determine the relaxed atomic structure of the twisted bilayers using classical force fields and calculate the electronic band structure using a tight-binding model parametrized from first-principles density-functional theory. We find that the highest valence bands in these systems can derive either from $Γ$-point or $K$/$K'$-point states of the constituent monolayers. For homobilayers, the two highest valence bands are composed of monolayer $Γ$-point states, exhibit a graphene-like dispersion and become flat as the twist angle is reduced. The situation is more complicated for heterobilayers where the ordering of $Γ$-derived and $K$/$K'$-derived states depends both on the material composition and also the twist angle. In all systems, qualitatively different band structures are obtained when atomic relaxations are neglected.
We report first-principles calculations of the structural and vibrational properties of the synthesized two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures formed by single-layers dichalcogenides MoSe2 and WSe2. We show that, when combining these systems in a periodic two-dimensional heterostructures, the intrinsic phonon characteristics of the free-standing constituents are to a large extent preserved but, furthermore, exhibit shear and breathing phonon modes that are not present in the individual building blocks. These peculiar modes depend strongly on the weak vdW forces and has a great contibut…
Layered two-dimensional materials exhibit rich transport and optical phenomena in twisted or lattice-incommensurate heterostructures with spatial variations of interlayer hybridization arising from moiré interference effects. Here, we report experimental and theoretical studies of excitons in twisted heterobilayers and heterotrilayers of transition metal dichalcogenides. Using MoSe$_2$-WSe$_2$ stacks as representative realizations of twisted van der Waals bilayer and trilayer heterostructures, we observe contrasting optical signatures and interpret them in the theoretical framework of interlay…
Nearly localized moire flat bands in momentum space, arising at particular twist angles, are the key to achieve correlated effects in transition-metal dichalcogenides. Here, we use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to visualize the presence of a flat band near the Fermi level of van der Waals (vdW) WSe2/MoSe2 heterobilayer grown by molecular beam epitaxy. This flat band is localized near the K point of the Brillouin zone and has a width of several hundred meVs. By combining ARPES measurements with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we confirm the coexistence of diffe…
Accurately described excitonic properties of transition metal dichalcogenide heterobilayers (HBLs) are crucial to comprehend the optical response and the charge carrier dynamics of them. Excitons in multilayer systems posses inter or intralayer character whose spectral positions depend on their binding energy and the band alignment of the constituent single-layers. In this study, we report the electronic structure and the absorption spectra of MoS$_2$/WS$_2$ and MoSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ HBLs from first-principles calculations. We explore the spectral positions, binding energies and the origins of inte…
The optical spectra of vertically stacked MoSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ heterostructures contain additional 'interlayer' excitonic peaks that are absent in the individual monolayer materials and exhibit a significant spatial charge separation in out-of-plane direction. Extending on a previous study, we used a many-body perturbation theory approach to simulate and analyse the excitonic spectra of MoSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ heterobilayers with three stacking orders, considering both momentum-direct and momentum-indirect excitons. We find that the small oscillator strengths and corresponding optical responses of the in…
Identifying quantum numbers to label elementary excitations is essential for the correct description of light-matter interaction in solids. In monolayer semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) such as MoSe$_2$ or WSe$_2$, most optoelectronic phenomena are described well by labelling electron and hole states with the spin projection along the normal to the layer (S$_z$). In contrast, for WSe$_2$/MoSe$_2$ interfaces recent experiments show that taking S$_z$ as quantum number is not a good approximation, and spin mixing needs to be always considered. Here we argue that the correct …
Moiré patterns with angular mismatch in van der Waals heterostructures composed of atomically thin semiconducting materials are a fascinating platform to engineer the optically generated excitonic properties towards novel quantum phenomena. The moiré pattern as a periodic trap potential can give rise to spatially ordered zero-dimensional (0D) exciton ensembles, which offers the possibility for dense coherent quantum emitters and quantum simulation of many-body physics. The intriguing moiré exciton properties are affected by their dynamics and exciton-phonon interaction. However, the moiré exci…

The availability of accessible fabrication methods based on deterministic transfer of atomically thin crystals has been essential for the rapid expansion of research into van der Waals heterostructures. An inherent issue of these techniques is the deformation of the polymer carrier film during the transfer, which can lead to highly non-uniform strain induced in the transferred two-dimensional material. Here, using a combination of optical spectroscopy, atomic force and Kelvin probe force microscopy, we show that the presence of nanometer scale wrinkles formed due to transfer-induced stress rel…
A major theoretical challenge of studying twisted transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) bilayers is that the unit cell of such structures is very large and therefore difficult to address using first-principles methods. However, twisted TMD bilayers form moiré patterns, which consist of regions of commensurate stacking, either smoothly interpolated into one another or separated by sharp domain walls. In this paper, we study twisted TMD bilayers by studying the properties of the constituent commensurate structures. Using density functional theory (DFT), we compute band structures for commensurat…
The formation of interfacial moiré patterns from angular and/or lattice mismatch has become a powerful approach to engineer a range of quantum phenomena in van der Waals heterostructures. For long-lived and valley-polarized interlayer excitons in transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) heterobilayers, signatures of quantum confinement by the moiré landscape have been reported in recent experimental studies. Such moiré confinement has offered the exciting possibility to tailor new excitonic systems, such as ordered arrays of zero-dimensional (0D) quantum emitters and their coupling into topologi…
The excitonic homogeneous linewidth of an exfoliated monolayer MoSe$_2$ encapsulated in hexagonal boron nitride is directly measured using multidimensional coherent spectroscopy with micron spatial resolution. The linewidth is 0.26 $\pm$ 0.02 meV, corresponding to a dephasing time $T_2 \approx$ 2.5 ps, which is almost half the narrowest reported values for non-encapsulated MoSe$_2$ flakes. We attribute the narrowed linewidth to Coulomb screening by the encapsulated material and suppression of non-radiative processes. Through direct measurements of encapsulated and non-encapsulated monolayers, …
We reveal by first-principles calculations that the interlayer binding in a twisted MoS2/MoTe2 heterobilayer decreases with increasing twist angle, due to the increase of the interlayer overlapping degree, a geometric quantity describing well the interlayer steric effect. The binding energy is found to be a Gaussian-like function of twist angle. The resistance to rotation, an analogue to the interlayer sliding barrier, can also be defined accordingly. In sharp contrast to the case of MoS2 homobilayer, here the energy band gap reduces with increasing twist angle. We find a remarkable interlayer…
Using four-wave mixing microscopy, we measure the coherent response and ultrafast dynamics of excitons and trions in MoSe$_2$ monolayers grown by molecular beam epitaxy on thin films of hexagonal boron nitride. We assess inhomogeneous and homogeneous broadenings in the transition spectral lineshape. The impact of phonons on the homogeneous dephasing is inferred via the temperature dependence of the dephasing. Four-wave mixing mapping, combined with the atomic force microscopy, reveals spatial correlations between exciton oscillator strength, inhomogeneous broadening and the sample morphology. …
We perform coherent nonlinear spectroscopy of excitons in single-layers of MoSe$_2$ and WSe$_2$ encapsulated between thin films of hexagonal boron nitride. Employing four-wave mixing microscopy we identify virtually disorder free areas, generating exciton optical response at the homogeneous limit. Focussing on such areas, we measure exciton homogeneous broadening as a function of environmental factors, namely temperature and exciton density. Exploiting FWM imaging, we find that at such locations, nonlinear absorption of the exciton excited states and their coherent couplings can be observed. U…
Excitons in monolayer semiconductors have large optical transition dipole for strong coupling with light field. Interlayer excitons in heterobilayers, with layer separation of electron and hole components, feature large electric dipole that enables strong coupling with electric field and exciton-exciton interaction, at the cost that the optical dipole is substantially quenched (by several orders of magnitude). In this letter, we demonstrate the ability to create a new class of excitons in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) hetero- and homo-bilayers that combines the advantages of monolayer-…
Quantifying and controlling the coherent dynamics and couplings of optically active excitations in solids is of paramount importance in fundamental research in condensed matter optics and for their prospective optoelectronic applications in quantum technologies. Here, we perform ultrafast coherent nonlinear spectroscopy of a charge-tunable MoSe$_2$ monolayer. The experiments show that the homogeneous and inhomogeneous line width and the population decay of exciton complexes hosted by this material can be directly tuned by an applied gate bias, which governs the Fermi level and therefore the fr…
This paper presents a theoretical description of both the valley Zeeman effect (g-factors) and Landau levels in two-dimensional H-phase transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) using the Luttinger-Kohn approximation with spin-orbit coupling. At the valley extrema in TMDs, energy bands split into Landau levels with a Zeeman shift in the presence of a uniform out-of-plane external magnetic field. The Landau level indices are symmetric in the $K$ and $K'$ valleys. We develop a numerical approach to compute the single band g-factors from first principles without the need for a sum over unoccupied b…
Little is known about the role of weak interlayer coupling in the second harmonic generation (SHG) effects of two-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) systems. In this article, taking homo-bilayer $MoS_2/MoS_2$ and hetero-bilayer $MoS_2/MoSe_2$ as typical examples, we have systemically investigated their SHG susceptibilities as a function of interlayer hopping strength using first-principles calculations. For the SHG at zero frequency limit of both $MoS_2/MoS_2$ and $MoS_2/MoSe_2$, although the increase of tint can increase the intensities of interlayer optical transitions (IOT), the increased band…

Here, we report experimental and theoretical studies of WSe$_2$ homobilayers obtained in two stable configurations of 2H ($60^\circ$ twist) and 3R ($0^\circ$ twist) stackings by controlled chemical vapor synthesis of high-quality large-area crystals. Using optical absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy at cryogenic temper…
Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are interesting for understanding fundamental physics of two-dimensional materials (2D) as well as for many emerging technologies, including spin electronics. Here, we report the discovery of long-range magnetic order below TM = 40 K and 100 K in bulk semiconducting TMDs 2H-MoTe2 and 2H-MoSe2, respectively, by means of muon spin-rotation (muSR), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), as well as density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The muon spin rotation measurements show the presence of a large and homogeneous internal magnetic fields at low tempe…
