When a reductive group acts on an algebraic variety, a linearized ample line bundle induces a stratification on the variety where the strata are ordered by the degrees of instability. In this paper, we study variation of stratifications coming from the group actions in the GIT quotient construction for projective toric varieties. Cox showed that each projective toric variety is a GIT quotient of an affine space by a diagonalizable group with respect to linearizations that come from ample divisors on the toric variety. We provide a sufficient conditions for two ample divisors to induce the same stratification and formulate two types of walls in the ample cone that completely capture two kinds of variations. We also prove that the variation is intrinsic to the primitive collections and the relations among ray generators of the fans.
We define the notion of complex stratification by quasifolds and show that such spaces occur as complex quotients by certain nonclosed subgroups of tori associated to convex polytopes. The spaces thus obtained provide a natural generalization to the nonrational case of the notion of toric variety associated with a rational convex polytope.
A Kazhdan-Lusztig atlas, introduced by He, Knutson and Lu, on a stratified variety (V,Y) is a way of modeling the stratification Y of V locally on the stratification of Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties X^w_o \cap X_v by their intersection with opposite Schubert varieties X_u. We are interested in classifying smooth toric surfaces with Kazhdan-Lusztig atlases. This involves finding a degeneration of V to a union of Richardson varieties in the flag variety H/B_H of some Kac-Moody group H. We determine which toric surfaces have a chance at having a Kazhdan-Lusztig atlas by looking at their moment polyto…
We show that the moduli space of stable n-pointed rational curves can be flatly degenerated to a projective toric variety. We arrive at this by showing that the Chow quotients of the Grassmannians admit toric degenerations, which in turn, follows from a theorem that we prove for toric degenerations of more general Chow quotients. Along the way, we also argued that GIT quotient of a flat family is again flat. In particular, all GIT quotients of flag varieties by maximal tori can be flatly degenerated to projective toric varieties ([9] and [12]).
Let X be a smooth toric variety stratified by the torus action. This paper is a presentation of a description of the category Perv_X of perverse sheaves on X relatively to the fixed stratification. We define a category of representations of a quiver, defined thanks to the fan of X, equivalent to Perv_X.
This is an expository paper in which we define projective GIT quotients and introduce toric varieties from this perspective. It is intended primarily for readers who are learning either invariant theory or toric geometry for the first time.
We show that all toric noncommutative crepant resolutions (NCCRs) of affine GIT quotients of "weakly symmetric" unimodular torus representations are derived equivalent. This yields evidence for a non-commutative extension of a well known conjecture by Bondal and Orlov stating that all crepant resolutions of a Gorenstein singularity are derived equivalent. We prove our result by showing that all toric NCCRs of the affine GIT quotient are derived equivalent to a fixed Deligne-Mumford GIT quotient stack associated to a generic character of the torus. This extends a result by Halpern-Leistner and …
For (X,L) a polarized toric variety and G a torus of automorphisms of (X,L), denote by Y the GIT quotient X/G. We define a family of fully faithful functors from the category of torus equivariant reflexive sheaves on Y to the category of torus equivariant reflexive sheaves on X. We show, under a genericity assumption on G, that slope stability is preserved by these functors if and only if the pair ((X, L), G) satisfies a combinatorial criterion. As an application, when (X,L) is a polarized toric orbifold of dimension n, we relate stable equivariant reflexive sheaves on (X, L) to stable equivar…
We give explicit equations for the Chow and Hilbert quotients of a projective scheme X by the action of an algebraic torus T in an auxiliary toric variety. As a consequence we provide GIT descriptions of these canonical quotients, and obtain other GIT quotients of X by variation of GIT quotient. We apply these results to find equations for the moduli space \bar{M}_{0,n} of stable genus zero n-pointed curves as a subvariety of a smooth toric variety defined via tropical methods.
Motivated by constructing moduli spaces of unstable objects, we use new ideas in non-reductive GIT to construct quotients by parabolic group actions. For moduli problems with semistable moduli spaces constructed by reductive GIT, we consider associated instability (or HKKN) stratifications, which are often closed related to Harder-Narasimhan stratifications, and construct quotients of the unstable strata under various stabiliser assumptions by further developing ideas of non-reductive GIT. Our approach is to construct parabolic quotients in stages, in order for the required stabiliser assumpti…
Bott-Samelson varieties are a twisted product of $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^1$'s with a map into $G/B$. These varieties are mostly studied in the case in which the map into $G/B$ is birational to the image; however in this paper we study a fiber of this map when it is not birational. We will see that in some cases the general fiber, which we christen a brick manifold, is a toric variety. In order to do so we use the moment map of a Bott-Samelson variety to translate this problem into one in terms of the "subword complexes" of Knutson and Miller. Pilaud and Stump realized certain subword complexes a…
The GIT chamber decomposition arising from a subtorus action on a quasiprojective toric variety is a polyhedral complex. Denote by Sigma the fan that is the cone over the polyhedral complex. In this paper we show that the toric variety defined by the fan Sigma is the normalization of the toric Chow quotient of a closely related affine toric variety by a complementary torus.
The most fundamental example of mirror symmetry compares the Fermat hypersurfaces in P^n and P^n/G, where G is a finite group that acts on P^n and preserves the Fermat hypersurface. We generalise this to hypersurfaces in Grassmannians, where the picture is richer and more complex. There is a finite group G that acts on the Grassmannian Gr(n,r) and preserves an appropriate Calabi-Yau hypersurface. We establish how mirror symmetry, toric degenerations, blow-ups and variation of GIT relate the Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces inside Gr(n,r) and Gr(n,r)/G. This allows us to describe a compactification of …
Extending work of Bielawski-Dancer and Konno, we develop a theory of toric hyperkahler varieties, which involves toric geometry, matroid theory and convex polyhedra. The framework is a detailed study of semi-projective toric varieties, meaning GIT quotients of affine spaces by torus actions, and specifically, of Lawrence toric varieties, meaning GIT quotients of even-dimensional affine spaces by symplectic torus actions. A toric hyperkahler variety is a complete intersection in a Lawrence toric variety. Both varieties are non-compact, and they share the same cohomology ring, namely, the Stanle…
Brown proved that the I-function of a toric fibration lies on the overruled Lagrangian cone of its genus zero Gromov-Witten theory, introduced by Coates and Givental. In this paper, we prove the theorem for partial flag variety fibrations. To do so, we will construct new moduli spaces generalising the idea of Ciocan-Fontanine, Kim and Maulik.
For a complex reductive group G acting linearly on a complex affine space V with respect to a character, we show two stratifications of V associated to this action (and a choice of invariant inner product on the Lie algebra of the maximal compact subgroup of G) coincide. The first is Hesselink's stratification by adapted 1-parameter subgroups and the second is the Morse theoretic stratification associated to the norm square of the moment map. We also give a proof of a version of the Kempf-Ness theorem which states that the GIT quotient is homeomorphic to the symplectic reduction (both taken wi…
We introduce the fibred toric varieties as equivariant $\mathbb{C}P^r$ bundles over lower dimensional toric varieties. An equivalent characterization is that the natural morphisms on them degenerate to bundle projections in the context of variation of toric varieties as GIT quotients. Our main observation is that these fibred toric varieties also arise naturally in the variation of hyperkähler varieties, namely, the fibred toric varieties are contained in the exceptional sets of the hyperkähler natural morphisms and the Mukai flops.
Let \X be an affine toric variety under a torus \T and let T be a subtorus. The general T-orbit closures in \X and their flat limits are parametrized by the main component H_0 of the toric Hilbert scheme. Further, the quotient torus \T/T acts on H_0 with a dense orbit. We describe the fan of this toric variety; this leads us to an integral analogue of the fiber polytope of Billera and Sturmfels. We also describe the relation of H_0 to the main component of the inverse limit of GIT quotients of \X by T.
We compute the intersection Betti numbers of the GIT model of the moduli space of numerically polarized Enriques surfaces of degree 2. The strategy of the cohomological calculation relies on a general method developed by Kirwan to compute the cohomology of GIT quotients of projective varieties, based on the equivariantly perfect stratification of the unstable points studied by Hesselink and others and a partial resolution of singularities, called Kirwan blow-up.
Associated to a toric variety $X$ of dimension $r$ over a field $k$ is a fan $Δ$ on $\Bbb R^r$. The fan $Δ$ is a finite set of cones which are in one-to-one correspondence with the orbits of the torus action on $X$. The fan $Δ$ inherits the Zariski topology from $X$. In this article some cohomological invariants of $X$ are studied in terms of whether or not they depend only on $Δ$ and not $k$. Secondly some numerical invariants of $X$ are studied in terms of whether or not they are topological invariants of the fan $Δ$. That is, whether or not they depend only on the finite topological space d…
We give a stratification of the GIT quotient of the Grassmannian $G_{2,n}$ modulo the normaliser of a maximal torus of $SL_{n}(k)$ with respect to the ample generator of the Picard group of $G_{2,n}$. We also prove that the flag variety $GL_{n}(k)/B_{n}$ can be obtained as a GIT quotient of $GL_{n+1}(k)/B_{n+1}$ modulo a maximal torus of $SL_{n+1}(k)$ for a suitable choice of an ample line bundle on $GL_{n+1}(k)/B_{n+1}$.
