We introduce a generalized Lagrangian density - involving a non-Hermitian kinetic term - for a quantum particle with the generalized momentum operator. Upon variation of the Lagrangian, we obtain the corresponding Schrodinger equation. The extended probability and particle current densities are found which satisfy the continuity equation.

We calculate analytically, for finite-size matrices, joint probability densities of ratios of level spacings in ensembles of random matrices characterized by their associated confining potential. We focus on the ratios of two spacings between three consecutive real eigenvalues, as well as certain generalizations such as the overlapping ratios. The resulting formulas are further analyzed in detail in two specific cases: the beta-Hermite and the beta-Laguerre cases, for which we offer explicit calculations for small N. The analytical results are in excellent agreement with numerical simulations …
Probability densities that are not uniquely determined by their moments are said to be "moment-indeterminate", or "M-indeterminate". Determining whether or not a density is M-indeterminate, or how to generate an M-indeterminate density, is a challenging problem with a long history. Quantum mechanics is inherently probabilistic, yet the way in which probability densities are obtained is dramatically different in comparison to standard probability theory, involving complex wave functions and operators, among other aspects. Nevertheless, the end results are standard probabilistic quantities, such…
Generation of Wigner functions of Landau levels and determination of their symmetries and generic properties are achieved in the autonomous framework of deformation quantization. Transformation properties of diagonal Wigner functions under space inversion, time reversal and parity transformations are specified and their invariance under a four-parameter subgroup of symplectic transformations are established. A generating function for all Wigner functions is developed and this has been identified as the phase-space coherent state for Landau levels. Integrated forms of generating function are us…
In a series of papers with Kossakowski, the first author has examined properties of densities for which the positive partial transpositrionm (PPT) property can be readily checked. These densities were also investigated from a different perspective by Baumgartner, Hiesmayr and Narnhofer. In this paper we show how the support of such densities can be expressed in terms of lines in a finite geometry and how that same structure lends itself to checking the necessary PPT condition and to a novel sufficient condition for separability.
Introduced recently approach based on tomographic probability distribution of quantum states is shown to be closely related with the known notion of the quantum probability measures discussed in quantum information theory and positive operator valued measures approach. Partial derivative of the distribution function of quantum probability measure associated with the homodyne quadrature (symplectic quantum measure) is shown to be equal the tomogram of the quantum state. Analogous relation of the spin tomogram to quantum probability measure associated with spin state is obtained. Star-product of…
While the effect of relativity in the electronic density has been widely studied, the effect on the pair probability, intracule, and extracule densities has not been studied before. Thus, in this work, we unveil new insights related to changes on the electronic structure caused by relativistic effects. Our numerical results suggest that the mean inter-electronic distance is reduced (mostly) due to scalar-relativistic effects. As a consequence, an increase of the electron-electron repulsion energy is observed. Preliminary results suggest that this observation is also valid when electronic corre…
We find the laws for the spreading of the spatial widths (parallel and transverse to the direction of average motion) of the relativistic position probability density for a massive, spinless particle. We find that when the momentum width of the wavepacket is small compared to the average momentum, there is a long time over which spreading is minimal. This result may be useful in particle accelerator design. We also demonstrate the Lorentz contraction of a wavepacket using relativistic probability amplitudes.
We consider a pair of one-parameter (alpha) families of generalized two-qubit determinantal Hilbert-Schmidt probability distributions, p_{alpha}(|rho^{PT}|) and q_{alpha}(|rho|), where rho is a 4 x 4 density matrix, rho^{PT}, its partial transpose, with |rho^{PT}| \in [-1/16,1/256] and |rho| \in [0, 1/256]. The Dyson-index-like (random matrix) parameter alpha is 1/2 for the 9-dimensional generic two-rebit systems, 1 for the 15-dimensional generic two-qubit systems,... Numerical (moment-based probability-distribution-reconstruction) analyses suggest the conjecture that the Fisher information--a…
This paper extends the Madelung-Bohm formulation of quantum mechanics to describe the time-reversible interaction of classical and quantum systems. The symplectic geometry of the Madelung transform leads to identifying hybrid classical-quantum Lagrangian paths extending the Bohmian trajectories from standard quantum theory. As the classical symplectic form is no longer preserved, the nontrivial evolution of the Poincaré integral is presented explicitly. Nevertheless, the classical phase-space components of the hybrid Bohmian trajectory identify a Hamiltonian flow parameterized by the quantum c…
After briefly reviewing the definitions of classical probability densities for position, $P_{CL}(x)$, and for momentum, $P_{CL}(p)$, we present several examples of classical mechanical potential systems, mostly variations on such familiar cases as the infinite well and the uniformly accelerated particle for which the classical distributions can be easily derived and visualized. We focus especially on a simple potential which interpolates between the symmetric linear potential, $V(x) = F|x|$, and the infinite well, which can illustrate, in a mathematically straightforward way, how the divergent…
The quantum mechanical probability densities are compared with the probability densities treated by the theory of random variables. The relevance of their difference for the interpretation of quantum mechanics is commented.
For free Klein-Gordon fields, we construct a one-parameter family of conserved current densities $J_a^μ$, with $a\in(-1,1)$, and use the latter to yield a manifestly covariant expression for the most general positive-definite and Lorentz-invariant inner product on the space of solutions of the Klein-Gordon equation. Employing a recently developed method of constructing the Hilbert space and observables for Klein-Gordon fields, we then obtain the probability current density ${\cal J}_a^μ$ for the localization of a Klein-Gordon field in space. We show that in the nonrelativistic limit both $J_a^…
In previous work, we have shown how the description of spin may be generalized and we have worked out this generalization for the cases spin 1/2 and spin 1. In this paper, we deal with the case of spin 2 and give the generalized probability amplitudes.
Bound states of the generalized spiked harmonic oscillator potential are calculated accurately by using the generalized pseudospectral method. Energy eigenvalues, various expectation values, radial densities are obtained through a nonuniform, optimal spatial discretization of the radial Schrödinger equation efficiently. Ground and excited states corresponding to arbitrary values of $n$ and $\ell$ are reported for potential parameters covering a wide range of interaction. Both weak and strong coupling is considered. The effect of potential parameters on eigenvalues and densities are discussed. …
Spectral statistics of quantum systems have been studied in detail using the nearest neighbour level spacings, which for generic chaotic systems follows random matrix theory predictions. In this work, the probability density of the closest neighbour and farther neighbour spacings from a given level are introduced. Analytical predictions are derived using a $3 \times 3$ matrix model. The closest neighbour density is generalized to the $k-$th closest neighbour spacing density, which allows for investigating long-range correlations. For larger $k$ the probability density of $k-$th closest neighbo…
The Wigner distribution function is a quasi-probability distribution. When properly integrated, it provides the correct charge and current densities, but it gives negative probabilities in some points and regions of the phase space. Alternatively, the Husimi distribution function is positive-defined everywhere, but it does not provide the correct charge and current densities. The origin of all these difficulties is the attempt to construct a phase space within a quantum theory that does not allow well-defined (i.e. simultaneous) values of the position and momentum of an electron. In contrast, …
The survival probability measures the probability that a system taken out of equilibrium has not yet moved out from its initial state. Inspired by the generalized entropies used to analyze nonergodic states, we introduce a generalized version of the survival probability, and discuss how it can assist studies of the structure of the eigenstates and ergodicity.
Position probability distribution of a set of massive mutually exclusive particles in one dimension has been defined. Examples with a given two mutually exclusive particles system are considered. It is emphasized that quantum particles at finite potentials can not be regarded as a mutually exclusive system or they are indistinguishable. Afterward, it is attempted to ascribe a mutually exclusive system to continuous mass densities of a rigid body to calculate average values. We do this by applying correspondence principle with regard to probability densities.
Generalized quantum measurements with N distinct outcomes are used for determining the density matrix, of order d, of an ensemble of quantum systems. The resulting probabilities are represented by a point in an N-dimensional space. It is shown that this point lies in a convex domain having at most d^2-1 dimensions.
