A Rb deficiency by a factor two with respect to the Sun has been found in M dwarfs of solar metallicity. This deficiency is difficult to understand from both the observational and nucleosynthesis point of views. To test the reliability of this Rb deficiency, we study the Rb and Zr abundances in a sample of KM-type giant stars in a similar metallicity range extracted from the AMBRE Project. We derive Rb and Zr abundances in 54 giant stars with metallicity close to solar by spectral synthesis in LTE and NLTE. The impact of the Zeeman broadening in the RbI line is also studied. The LTE analysis results in a Rb deficiency in giant stars smaller than that obtained in M dwarfs, but the NLTE [Rb/Fe] ratios are very close to solar in the full metallicity range. This contrasts with the figure found in M dwarfs. We investigate the effect of gravitational settling and magnetic activity as possible causes of the Rb deficiency found in M dwarfs. While, the former phenomenon has a negligible impact on the surface Rb abundance, the existence of an average magnetic field with intensity typical of that observed in M dwarfs may result in systematic Rb abundance underestimations if the Zeeman broadening is not considered in the spectral synthesis. The new [Rb,Zr/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] relationships can be explained when the Rb production by rotating massive stars and low-and-intermediate mass stars are considered, without the need of any deviation from the standard s-process nucleosynthesis in AGB stars as previously suggested.
Luminous Galactic OH/IR stars have been identified as massive (>4-5 M_s) AGB stars experiencing HBB and Li production. Their Rb abundances and [Rb/Zr] ratios derived from hydrostatic model atmospheres, are significantly higher than predictions from AGB nucleosynthesis models, posing a problem to our understanding of AGB evolution and nucleosynthesis. We report new Rb and Zr abundances in the full sample of massive Galactic AGB stars, previously studied with hydrostatic models, by using more realistic extended model atmospheres. We use a modified version of the spectral synthesis code Turbospec…
Spectroscopic determinations of Rubidium abundances were conducted by applying the spectrum fitting method to the Rb I 7800 line for an extensive sample of ~500 late-type dwarfs as well as giants (including Hyades cluster stars) belonging to the galactic disk population, with an aim of establishing the behaviour of [Rb/Fe] ratio for disk stars in the metallicity range of -0.6<[Fe/H]<+0.3. An inspection of the resulting Rb abundances for Hyades dwarfs revealed that they show a systematic Teff-dependent trend at >5500K; this means that the results for mid-G to F stars (including the Sun) are not…
In this study, abundances of the neutron-capture elements Rb, Sr, and Zr are derived, for the first time, in a sample of nearby M dwarfs. We focus on stars in the metallicity range -0.5<[Fe/H]<+0.3, an interval poorly explored for Rb abundances in previous analyses. To do this we use high-resolution, high-signal-to-noise-ratio, optical and near-infrared spectra of 57 M dwarfs observed with CARMENES. The resulting [Sr/Fe] and [Zr/Fe] ratios for most M dwarfs are almost constant at about the solar value, and are identical to those found in GK dwarfs of the same metallicity. However, for Rb we fi…
We present NIR synthetic spectra based on PHOENIX stellar atmosphere models of typical early and mid M dwarfs with varied C and O abundances. We apply multiple recently published methods for determining M dwarf metallicity to our models to determine the effect of C and O abundances on metallicity indicators. We find that the pseudo-continuum level is very sensitive to C/O and that all metallicity indicators show a dependence on C and O abundances, especially in lower Teff models. In some cases the inferred metallicity ranges over a full order of magnitude (>1 dex) when [C/Fe] and [O/Fe] are va…
A new model atom of Sc II was constructed using the most up-to-date atomic data. For the testing purpose, the non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) calculations were carried out for three stars with reliably determined atmospheric parameters: the Sun, HD~61421 (Procyon), and HD~84937. Accounting for deviations from LTE leads to smaller abundance errors compared with the LTE case and consistent within the error bars abundances obtained from different Sc II lines. Solar non-LTE abundance log eps_Sun = 3.12+-0.05 exceeds the meteoritic abundance recommended by Lodders (2021), by 0.08~dex.…
We identify [Rb IV] 1.5973 and [Cd IV] 1.7204 micron emission lines in high-resolution (R=40,000) near-infrared spectra of the planetary nebulae (PNe) NGC 7027 and IC 5117, obtained with the IGRINS spectrometer on the 2.7-m telescope at McDonald Observatory. We also identify [Ge VI] 2.1930 $μ$m in NGC 7027. Alternate identifications for these features are ruled out based on the absence of other multiplet members and/or transitions with the same upper levels. Ge, Rb, and Cd can be enriched in PNe by s-process nucleosynthesis during the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stage of evolution. To determ…
Employing tidally enhanced stellar wind, we studied in binaries the effects of metallicity, mass ratio of primary to secondary, tidal enhancement efficiency and helium abundance on the formation of blue hook (BHk) stars in globular clusters (GCs). A total of 28 sets of binary models combined with different input parameters are studied. For each set of binary model, we presented a range of initial orbital periods that is needed to produce BHk stars in binaries. All the binary models could produce BHk stars within different range of initial orbital periods. We also compared our results with the …

Helium-Abundance and Other Composition Effects on the Properties of Stellar Surface Convection in Solar-like Main-sequence Stars
\rev{We also find that helium abundance and surface gravity behave largely in similar ways, but differ in the way they affect the mean molecular weight}。谱线形成的一个简单模型表明,谱线的平分线和绝对多普勒频移取决于氦的丰度。我们看看$α$元素增强的效果,发现它有一个相当小的影响,在SAL的对流动力学相比,氦丰度。
The ability to perform detailed chemical analysis of Sun-like F-, G-, and K-type stars is a powerful tool with many applications including studying the chemical evolution of the Galaxy and constraining planet formation theories. Unfortunately, complications in modeling cooler stellar atmospheres hinders similar analysis of M-dwarf stars. Empirically-calibrated methods to measure M dwarf metallicity from moderate-resolution spectra are currently limited to measuring overall metallicity and rely on astrophysical abundance correlations in stellar populations. We present a new, empirical calibrati…
Calibrating the metallicity of M dwarfs in wide physical binaries with F-, G-, and K-primaries -- II: Carbon, oxygen, and odd-Z iron-peak abundances of the primary stars
Among stars in Galactic globular clusters the carbon abundance tends to decrease with increasing luminosity on the upper red giant branch, particularly within the lowest metallicity clusters. While such a phenomena is not predicted by canonical models of stellar interiors and evolution, it is widely held to be the result of some extra mixing operating during red giant branch ascent which transports material exposed to the CN(O)-cycle across the radiative zone in the stellar interior and into the base of the convective envelope, whereupon it is brought rapidly to the stellar surface. Here we pr…
Atmospheric compositions can provide powerful diagnostics of formation and migration histories of planetary systems. We investigate constraints on atmospheric abundances of H$_2$O, Na, and K, in a sample of transiting exoplanets using latest transmission spectra and new H$_2$ broadened opacities of Na and K. Our sample of 19 exoplanets spans from cool mini-Neptunes to hot Jupiters, with equilibrium temperatures between $\sim$300 and 2700 K. Using homogeneous Bayesian retrievals we report atmospheric abundances of Na, K, and H$_2$O, and their detection significances, confirming 6 planets with s…
While the Milky Way Nuclear star cluster has been studied extensively, how it formed is uncertain. Studies have shown it contains a solar and supersolar metallicity population that may have formed in-situ, along with a subsolar metallicity population that may have formed via mergers of globular clusters and dwarf galaxies. Stellar abundance measurements are critical to differentiate between formation scenarios. We present new measurements of [$M/H$] and $α$-element abundances [$α/Fe$] of two subsolar-metallicity stars in the Galactic Center. These observations were taken with the adaptive-opti…
Using data from the GALAH survey, we explore the dependence of elemental abundances on stellar age and metallicity among Galactic disc stars. We find that the abundance of most elements can be predicted from age and [Fe/H] with an intrinsic scatter of about 0.03 dex. We discuss the possible causes for the existence of the abundance-age-metallicity relations. Using a stochastic chemical enrichment scheme based on the size of Supernovae remnants, we show the intrinsic scatter is expected to be small, about 0.05 dex or even smaller if there is additional mixing in the ISM. Elemental abundances sh…
The properties of the relative abundances of rapid and slow neutron-capture elements are studied using a catalog containing spectroscopic abundance determinations for 14~elements produced in various nuclear-synthesis processes for 90~open clusters. The catalog also contains the positions, ages, velocities, and elements of the Galactic orbits of the clusters. The relative abundances of both $r$-elements (Eu) and $s$-elements (Y, Ba, La, and Ce) in clusters with high, elongated orbits and in field stars of the Galactic thin disk display different dependences on metallicity, age, Galactocentric d…
We present adaptive-optics assisted near-infrared high-spectral resolution observations of late-type giants in the nuclear star cluster of the Milky Way. The metallicity and elemental abundance measurements of these stars offer us an opportunity to understand the formation and evolution of the nuclear star cluster. In addition, their proximity to the supermassive black hole ($\sim 0.5$ pc) offers a unique probe of the star formation and chemical enrichment in this extreme environment. We observed two stars identified by medium spectral-resolution observations as potentially having very high me…
We study the influence of different metallicities on the physical, thermal, and chemical properties of protoplanetary disks, and in particular on the formation and destruction of carbon-based molecules. With the thermo-chemical code ProoDIMO we investigate the impact of lower metallicities on the radiation field, disk temperature, and the abundance of different molecules (H$_2$O, CH$_4$, CO, CO$_2$, HCN, CN, HCO$^+$ and N$_2$H$^+$). We use a fiducial disk model as a reference model and produce two models with lower metallicity. The resulting influence on different chemical species is studied b…
Carbon abundance in Small Magellanic Cloud planetary nebulae through Advanced Camera for Surveys prism spectroscopy: constraining stellar evolution at low metallicity
We study the impact of new metallicity measurements, from solar wind data, on the solar model. The "solar modelling problem" refers to the persisting discrepancy between helioseismological observations and predictions of solar models computed implementing state-of-the-art photospheric abundances. We critically reassess the problem, in particular considering the new set of abundances of von Steiger \& Zurbuchen 2016, determined through the \textit{in situ} collection of solar wind samples from polar coronal holes. This new set of abundances indicates a solar metallicity $Z_{\odot} \geq 0.0196 \…
We present abundances of globular clusters in the Milky Way and Fornax from integrated light spectra. Our goal is to evaluate the consistency of the integrated light analysis relative to standard abundance analysis for individual stars in those same clusters. This sample includes an updated analysis of 7 clusters from our previous publications and results for 5 new clusters that expand the metallicity range over which our technique has been tested. We find that the [Fe/H] measured from integrated light spectra agrees to $\sim$0.1 dex for globular clusters with metallicities as high as [Fe/H]=$…
We present a chemical abundance analysis of a metal-poor star, ROA 276, in the stellar system omega Centauri. We confirm that this star has an unusually high [Sr/Ba] abundance ratio. Additionally, ROA 276 exhibits remarkably high abundance ratios, [X/Fe], for all elements from Cu to Mo along with normal abundance ratios for the elements from Ba to Pb. The chemical abundance pattern of ROA 276, relative to a primordial omega Cen star ROA 46, is best fit by a fast-rotating low-metallicity massive stellar model of 20 Msun, [Fe/H] = -1.8, and an initial rotation 0.4 times the critical value; no ot…
Ratios of carefully selected line depths are sensitive to stellar effective temperature ($T_\mathrm{eff}$). Relations established between line-depth ratio (LDR) and $T_\mathrm{eff}$ allow one to determine $T_\mathrm{eff}$ precisely. However, LDRs can also depend on metallicity and abundance ratios, which can limit the accuracy of the LDR method unless such effects are properly taken into account. We investigate the metallicity effect using $H$-band spectra and stellar parameters published by the APOGEE project. We clearly detected the effects of metallicity and abundance ratios; $T_\mathrm{eff…
We investigate aluminum abundance variations in the stellar populations of globular clusters using both literature measurements of sodium and aluminum and APOGEE measurements of nitrogen and aluminum abundances. For the latter, we show that the Payne is the most suitable of the five available abundance pipelines for our purposes. Our combined sample of 42 globular clusters spans approximately 2 dex in [Fe/H] and 1.5 dex in $\log{M_{GC}/M_{\odot}}$. We find no fewer than five globular clusters with significant internal variations in nitrogen and/or sodium with little-to-no corresponding variati…
Photometric investigations have revealed that Galactic globular clusters exhibit internal metallicity variations amongst the so-called first-population stars, until now considered to have a homogeneous initial chemical composition. This is not fully supported by the sparse spectroscopic evidence, which so far gives conflicting results. Here, we present a high-resolution re-analysis of five stars in the Galactic globular cluster NGC 2808 taken from the literature. Target stars are bright red giants with nearly identical atmospheric parameters belonging to the first population according to their…
Based on the medium-high resolution (R~ 20,000), modest signal-to-noise ratio (S/N > 70) FLAMES-GIRAFFE spectra, we investigated the copper abundances of 129 red giant branch stars in the Galactic bulge with [Fe/H] from -1.14 to 0.46 dex. The copper abundances are derived from both local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) and nonlocal thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) with the spectral synthesis method. We find that the NLTE effects for Cu I lines show a clear dependence on metallicity, and they gradually increase with decreasing [Fe/H] for our sample stars. Our results indicate that the NLTE effe…
The age-metallicity relation is fundamental to study the formation and evolution of the disk. Observations have shown that this relation has a large scatter which can not be explained by observational errors only. That scatter is hence attributed to the effects of radial migration in which stars tracing different chemical evolution histories in the disk get mixed. However, the recent study of Nissen et al. 2020, using high precision observational data of solar type stars, found two relatively tight age-metallicity relations. One sequence of older and metal-richer stars probably traces the chem…
The neutrino process ($ν$-process) for the production of 7Li and 11B in core-collapse supernovae (SNe) is extensively investigated. Initial abundances of s-nuclei and other physical conditions are derived from an updated calculation of the SN 1987A progenitor. The nuclear reaction network including neutrino reactions is constructed with the variable order Bader-Deuflhard integration method. We find that yields of 7Li and 11B significantly depend on the stellar metallicity while they are independent of the weak s-process during the stellar evolution. When the metallicity is high, there are more…
We investigated almost 500 stars distributed among 193 binary or multiple systems made of late-F, G-, or early-K primaries and late-K or M dwarf companion candidates. For all of them, we compiled or measured coordinates, J-band magnitudes, spectral types, distances, and proper motions. With these data, we established a sample of 192 physically bound systems. In parallel, we carried out observations with HERMES/Mercator and obtained high resolution spectra for the 192 primaries and five secondaries. We used these spectra and the automatic StePar code for deriving precise stellar atmospheric para…
We measure abundances of 12 elements (Na, Mg, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) in a sample of 86 metal-poor ($-2 \lesssim \text{[Fe/H]} \lesssim -1$) subgiant stars in the solar neighborhood. Abundances are derived from high-resolution spectra taken with the Potsdam Echelle Polarimetric and Spectroscopic Instrument on the Large Binocular Telescope, modeled using iSpec and MOOG. By carefully quantifying the impact of photon-noise ($< 0.05$ dex for all elements) we robustly measure the intrinsic scatter of abundance ratios. At fixed [Fe/H] the RMS intrinsic scatter in [X/Fe] ranges from 0.…
