This paper is motivated by the quest of a non-group irreducible finite index depth 2 maximal subfactor. We compute the generic fusion rules of the Grothendieck ring of Rep(PSL(2,q)), q prime-power, by applying a Verlinde-like formula on the generic character table. We then prove that this family of fusion rings R_q interpolates to all integers q>=2, providing (when q is not prime-power) the first example of infinite family of non group-like simple integral fusion rings. Furthermore, they pass all the known criteria of (unitary) categorification. This provides infinitely many serious candidates for solving the famous open problem of whether there exists an integral fusion category which is not weakly group-theoretical. We prove that a complex categorification (if any) of an interpolated fusion ring R_q (with q non prime-power) cannot be braided, and so its Drinfeld center must be simple. In general, this paper proves that a non-pointed simple fusion category is non-braided if and only if its Drinfeld center is simple; and also that every simple integral fusion category is weakly group-theoretical if and only if every simple integral modular fusion category is pointed.
This paper classifies the Grothendieck rings of complex fusion categories of multiplicity one up to rank six. Among 72 possible fusion rings, $25$ ones are filtered out by using categorification criteria. Each of the remaining 47 fusion rings admits a unitary complex categorification. We found 6 new Grothendieck rings, categorified by applying a localization approach of the Pentagon Equation.
We study the fusion rings of tilting modules for a quantum group at a root of unity modulo the tensor ideal of negligible tilting modules. We identify them in type A with the combinatorial rings from [KS] and give a similar description of the sp(2n)-fusion ring in terms of noncommutative symmetric functions. Moreover we give a presentation of all fusion rings in classical types as quotients of polynomial rings extending known results in special cases. Finally we also compute the fusion rings for type G2.
We study fusion rings for degenerate minimal models ($p=q$ case) for N=0 and N=1 (super)conformal algebras. We consider a distinguished family of modules at the level $c=1$ and $c=3/2$ and show that the corresponding fusion rings are isomorphic to the representation rings for ${\mathfrak sl}(2, {\bf C})$ and ${\mathfrak osp}(1|2)$ respectively.
In this note we describe a general elementary procedure to attach a fusion ring to any Kac-Moody algebra of affine type. In the case of untwisted affine algebras, they are usual fusion rings in the literature. In the case of twisted affine algebras, they are exactly the twisted fusion rings defined by the author in [Ho2] via tracing out diagram automorphisms on conformal blocks for appropriate simply-laced Lie algebras. We also relate the fusion ring to the modular S-matrix for any Kac-Moody algebra of affine type.
The fusion rings associated to affine Kac-Moody algebras appear in several different contexts in math and mathematical physics. In this paper we find all automorphisms of all affine fusion rings, or equivalently the symmetries of the corresponding fusion coefficients. Most of these are directly related to symmetries of the corresponding Coxeter-Dynkin diagram. We also find all pairs of isomorphic affine fusion rings.
The integral group rings $\mathbb{Z}G$ for finite groups $G$ are precisely those fusion rings whose basis elements have Frobenius-Perron dimension 1, and each is categorifiable in the sense that it arises as the Grothendieck ring of a fusion category. Here we analyze the structure and representation theory of fusion rings with a basis of elements whose Frobenius-Perron dimensions take exactly one value distinct from 1. Our goal is a set of results which assist in characterizing when such fusion rings are categorifiable. As proof of concept, we completely classify the categorifiable near-group …
We study the fusion semirings arising from easy quantum groups. We classify all the possible free ones, answering a question of T. Banica and R. Vergnioux : these are exactly the fusion rings of quantum groups without any nontrivial one-dimensional representation. We then classify the possible groups of one-dimensional representations for free easy quantum groups. As an application, we give a unified proof of the Haagerup property for a broad class of easy quantum groups, recovering as special cases previous results by M. Brannan and F. Lemeux. We end with some considerations on the descriptio…
A simple, combinatorial construction of the sl(n)-WZNW fusion ring, also known as Verlinde algebra, is given. As a byproduct of the construction one obtains an isomorphism between the fusion ring and a particular quotient of the small quantum cohomology ring of the Grassmannian Gr(k,k+n). We explain how our approach naturally fits into known combinatorial descriptions of the quantum cohomology ring, by establishing what one could call a `Boson-Fermion-correspondence' between the two rings. We also present new recursion formulae for the structure constants of both rings, the fusion coefficients…

The fusion ring for $\widehat{\mathfrak{su}}(n)_m$ Wess-Zumino-Witten conformal field theories is known to be isomorphic to a factor ring of the ring of symmetric polynomials presented by Schur polynomials. We introduce a deformation of this factor ring associated with eigenpolynomials for the elliptic Ruijsenaars difference operators. The corresponding Littlewood-Richardson coefficients are governed by a Pieri rule stemming from the eigenvalue equation. The orthogonality of the eigenbasis gives rise to an analog of the Verlinde formula. In the trigonometric limit, our construction recovers th…
From a unifying lemma concerning fusion rings, we prove a collection of number-theoretic results about fusion, braided, and modular tensor categories. First, we prove that every fusion ring has a dimensional grading by an elementary abelian 2-group. As a result, we bound the order of the multiplicative central charge of arbitrary modular tensor categories. We also introduce Galois-invariant subgroups of the Witt group of nondegenerately braided fusion categories corresponding to algebraic number fields generated by Frobenius-Perron dimensions. Lastly, we provide a complete description of the f…
Torsion-freeness for discrete quantum groups was introduced by R. Meyer in order to formulate a version of the Baum-Connes conjecture for discrete quantum groups. In this note, we introduce torsion-freeness for abstract fusion rings. We show that a discrete quantum group is torsion-free if its associated fusion ring is torsion-free. In the latter case, we say that the discrete quantum group is strongly torsion-free. As applications, we show that the discrete quantum group duals of the free unitary quantum groups are strongly torsion-free, and that torsion-freeness of discrete quantum groups is…
For a finite group $G$, Turaev introduced the notion of a braided $G$-crossed fusion category. The classification of braided $G$-crossed extensions of braided fusion categories was studied by Etingof, Nikshych and Ostrik in terms of certain group cohomological data. In this paper we will define the notion of a $G$-crossed Frobenius $\star$-algebra and give a classification of (strict) $G$-crossed extensions of a commutative Frobenius $\star$-algebra $R$ equipped with a given action of $G$, in terms of the second group cohomology $H^2(G,R^\times)$. Now suppose that $\mathcal{B}$ is a non-degene…
We study properties of solutions of $Q$-systems in the WZW fusion ring obtained by the Kirillov-Reshetikhin modules. We make a conjecture about their positivity and periodicity and give a proof of it in some cases. We also construct a positive solution of the level $k$ restricted $Q$-system of classical types in the fusion rings. As an application, we prove some conjectures of Kirillov and Kuniba-Nakanishi-Suzuki on the level $k$ restricted $Q$-systems.
A fusion category of rank $4$ has either four self-dual objects or exactly two self-dual objects. We study fusion categories of rank $4$ with exactly two self-dual objects, giving nearly a complete classification of those based ring that admit pseudo-unitary categorification. More precisely, we show that if $\mathcal{C}$ is such a fusion category, then its Grothendieck ring $K(\mathcal{C})$ must be one of seven based rings, six of which have know categorifications. In doing so, we classify all based rings associated with near-group categories of the group $\mathbb{Z}/3\mathbb{Z}$.
We show that the WZW fusion rings at finite levels form a projective system with respect to the partial ordering provided by divisibility of the height, i.e. the level shifted by a constant. From this projective system we obtain WZW fusion rings in the limit of infinite level. This projective limit constitutes a mathematically well-defined prescription for the `classical limit' of WZW theories which replaces the naive idea of `sending the level to infinity'. The projective limit can be endowed with a natural topology, which plays an important role for studying its structure. The representation…
To an RCFT corresponds two combinatorial structures: the amplitude of a torus (the 1-loop partition function of a closed string, sometimes called a modular invariant), and a representation of the fusion ring (called a NIM-rep or equivalently a fusion graph, and closely related to the 1-loop partition function of an open string). In this paper we develop some basic theory of NIM-reps, obtain several new NIM-rep classifications, and compare them with the corresponding modular invariant classifications. Among other things, we make the following fairly disturbing observation: there are infinitely …
The zero modes' Fock space for the extended chiral $su(2)$ WZNW model gives room to a realization of the Grothendieck fusion ring of representations of the restricted $U_q sl(2)$ quantum universal enveloping algebra (QUEA) at an even ($2h$-th) root of unity, and of its extension by the Lusztig operators. It is shown that expressing the Drinfeld images of canonical characters in terms of Chebyshev polynomials of the Casimir invariant $C$ allows a streamlined derivation of the characteristic equation of $C$ from the defining relations of the restricted QUEA. The properties of the fusion ring of …
A fusion category is called transparent if the associator involving any invertible object is the identity map. For the Haagerup-Izumi fusion rings with $G = \mathbb{Z}_{2n+1}$ (the $\mathbb{Z}_3$ case is the Haagerup fusion ring with six simple objects), the transparent ansatz reduces the number of independent $F$-symbols from order $\mathcal{O}(n^6)$ to $\mathcal{O}(n^2)$, rendering the pentagon identity practically solvable. Transparent Haagerup-Izumi fusion categories are thereby constructively classified up to $G = \mathbb{Z}_9$, recovering all known Haagerup-Izumi fusion categories to thi…
Recently, a class of interaction round the face (IRF) solvable lattice models were introduced, based on any rational conformal field theory (RCFT). We investigate here the connection between the general solvable IRF models and the fusion ones. To this end, we introduce an associative algebra associated to any graph, as the algebra of products of the eigenvalues of the incidence matrix. If a model is based on an RCFT, its associated graph algebra is the fusion ring of the RCFT. A number of examples are studied. The Gordon--generalized IRF models are studied, and are shown to come from RCFT, by …
We return to the fusion rules for the Drinfeld double of the duals of the generalised Taft algebras that we studied in [9]. We first correct some proofs and statements in [9] that were incorrect, using stable homomorphisms. We then complete this with new results on fusion rules for the modules we had not studied in [9] and a classification of endotrivial and algebraic modules.
We give a construction and algorithmic description of the fusion ring of permutation extensions of an arbitrary modular tensor category using a combinatorial approach inspired by the physics of anyons and symmetry defects in bosonic topological phases of matter. The definition is illustrated with examples, namely bilayer symmetry defects and $S_3$-extensions of small modular tensor categories like the Ising and Fibonacci theories. An implementation of the fusion algorithm is provided in the form of a Mathematica package. We introduce the notions of confinement and deconfinement of anyons and d…
We give a proof, using so-called fusion rings and q-deformations of Brauer algebras that the representation ring of an orthogonal or symplectic group can be obtained as a quotient of a ring Gr(O(\infinity)). This is obtained here as a limiting case for analogous quotient maps for fusion categories, with the level going to \infinity. This in turn allows a detailed description of the quotient map in terms of a reflection group. As an application, one obtains a general description of the branching rules for the restriction of representations of Gl(N) to O(N) and Sp(N) as well as detailed informat…
The $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$--graded intertwining operators are introduced. We study these operators in the case of ``degenerate'' N=1 minimal models, with the central charge $c=3/2$. The corresponding fusion ring is isomorphic to the Grothendieck ring for the Lie superalgebra ${\mathfrak osp}(1|2)$. We also discus multiplicity--2 fusion rules and logarithmic intertwiners.
The first author constructed a $q$-parameterized spherical category $\sC$ over $\mathbb{C}(q)$ in [Liu15], whose simple objects are labelled by all Young diagrams. In this paper, we compute closed-form expressions for the fusion rule of $\sC$, using Littlewood-Richardson coefficients, as well as the characters (including a generating function), using symmetric functions with infinite variables.
Kazhdan and Wenzl classified all rigid tensor categories with fusion ring isomorphic to the fusion ring of the group $SU(d)$. In this paper we consider the C$^*$-analogue of this problem. Given a rigid C$^*$-tensor category $\mathcal{C}$ with fusion ring isomorphic to the fusion ring of the group $SU(d)$, we can extract a constant $q$ from $\mathcal{C}$ such that there exists a $*$-representation of the Hecke algebra $H_n(q)$ into $\mathcal{C}$. The categorical trace on $\mathcal{C}$ induces a Markov trace on $H_n(q)$. Using this Markov trace and a representation of $H_n(q)$ in $\textrm{Rep}\,…
We develop a categorical analogue of Clifford theory for strongly graded rings over graded fusion categories. We describe module categories over a fusion category graded by a group $G$ as induced from module categories over fusion subcategories associated with the subgroups of $G$. We define invariant $\C_e$-module categories and extensions of $\C_e$-module categories. The construction of module categories over $\C$ is reduced to determine invariant module categories for subgroups of $G$ and the indecomposable extensions of this modules categories. We associate a $G$-crossed product fusion cat…
The SL(2,Z) representation $π$ on the center of the restricted quantum group U_{q}sl(2) at the primitive 2p-th root of unity is shown to be equivalent to the SL(2,Z) representation on the extended characters of the logarithmic (1,p) conformal field theory model. The multiplicative Jordan decomposition of the U_{q}sl(2) ribbon element determines the decomposition of $π$ into a ``pointwise'' product of two commuting SL(2,Z) representations, one of which restricts to the Grothendieck ring; this restriction is equivalent to the SL(2,Z) representation on the (1,p)-characters, related to the fusion …
We explain a technique for discovering the number of simple objects in $Z(C)$, the center of a fusion category $C$, as well as the combinatorial data of the induction and restriction functors at the level of Grothendieck rings. The only input is the fusion ring $K(C)$ and the dimension function $K(C) \to \mathbb{C}$. The method is not guaranteed to succeed (it may give spurious answers besides the correct one, or it may simply take too much computer time), but it seems it often does. We illustrate by showing that there are 22 simple objects in the center of the extended Haagerup subfactor [arX…

We describe how the study of superfusion categories (roughly speaking, fusion categories enriched over the category of super vector spaces) reduces to that of fusion categories over sVect, in the sense of Drinfeld, Gelaki, Nikshych, and Ostrik. Following Brundan and Ellis, we give the construction of the underlying fusion category of a superfusion category, and give an explicit formula for the associator in this category in terms of 6$j$-symbols. We give a definition of the $π$-Grothendieck ring of a superfusion category, and prove a version of Ocneanu rigidity for superfusion categories.
We construct a commutative ring with identity which extends the ring of characters of finite dimensional representations of sl(3). It is generated by characters with values in the group ring $Z[\tilde{W}]$ of the extended affine Weyl group of $\hat{sl}(3)_k$ at $k\not \in Q$. The `quantised' version at rational level $k+3=3/p$ realises the fusion rules of a WZW conformal field theory based on admissible representations of $\hat{sl}(3)_k$.
In this paper, we continue our study of the Green rings of finite dimensional pointed Hopf algebras of rank one initiated in \cite{WLZ}, but focus on those Hopf algebras of non-nilpotent type. Let $H$ be a finite dimensional pointed rank one Hopf algebra of non-nilpotent type. We first determine all non-isomorphic indecomposable $H$-modules and describe the Clebsch-Gordan formulas for them. We then study the structures of both the Green ring $r(H)$ and the Grothendieck ring $G_0(H)$ of $H$ and establish the precise relation between the two rings. We use the Cartan map of $H$ to study the Jacob…
Let $L$ be an even (positive definite) lattice and $g\in O(L)$. In this article, we prove that the orbifold vertex operator algebra $V_{L}^{\hat{g}}$ has group-like fusion if and only if $g$ acts trivially on the discriminant group $\mathcal{D}(L)=L^*/L$ (or equivalently $(1-g)L^*<L$). We also determine their fusion rings and the corresponding quadratic space structures when $g$ is fixed point free on $L$. By applying our method to some coinvariant sublattices of the Leech lattice $Λ$, we prove a conjecture proposed by G. Höhn. In addition, we also discuss a construction of certain holomorphic…
Müger proved in 2003 that the center of a spherical fusion category C of non-zero dimension over an algebraically closed field is a modular fusion category whose dimension is the square of that of C. We generalize this theorem to a pivotal fusion category C over an arbitrary commutative ring K, without any condition on the dimension of the category. (In this generalized setting, modularity is understood as 2-modularity in the sense of Lyubashenko.) Our proof is based on an explicit description of the Hopf algebra structure of the coend of the center of C. Moreover we show that the dimension of…
A Fourier transform S is defined for the quantum double D(G) of a finite group G. Acting on characters of D(G), S and the central ribbon element of D(G) generate a unitary matrix representation of the group SL(2,Z). The characters form a ring over the integers under both the algebra multiplication and its dual, with the latter encoding the fusion rules of D(G). The Fourier transform relates the two ring structures. We use this to give a particularly short proof of the Verlinde formula for the fusion coefficients.
