Conditional distributions, as defined by the Markov category framework, are studied in the setting of matrix algebras (quantum systems). Their construction as linear unital maps are obtained via a categorical Bayesian inversion procedure. Simple criteria establishing when such linear maps are positive are obtained. Several examples are provided, including the standard EPR scenario, where the EPR correlations are reproduced in a purely compositional (categorical) manner. A comparison between the Bayes map, the Petz recovery map, and the Leifer-Spekkens acausal belief propagation is provided, illustrating some similarities and key differences.
Recently a new quantum generalization of the Renyi divergence and the corresponding conditional Renyi entropies was proposed. Here we report on a surprising relation between conditional Renyi entropies based on this new generalization and conditional Renyi entropies based on the quantum relative Renyi entropy that was used in previous literature. Our result generalizes the well-known duality relation H(A|B) + H(A|C) = 0 of the conditional von Neumann entropy for tripartite pure states to Renyi entropies of two different kinds. As a direct application, we prove a collection of inequalities that…
We prove the conditional Entropy Power Inequality for Gaussian quantum systems. This fundamental inequality determines the minimum quantum conditional von Neumann entropy of the output of the beam-splitter or of the squeezing among all the input states where the two inputs are conditionally independent given the memory and have given quantum conditional entropies. We also prove that, for any couple of values of the quantum conditional entropies of the two inputs, the minimum of the quantum conditional entropy of the output given by the conditional Entropy Power Inequality is asymptotically ach…
We prove the quantum conditional Entropy Power Inequality for quantum additive noise channels. This inequality lower bounds the quantum conditional entropy of the output of an additive noise channel in terms of the quantum conditional entropies of the input state and the noise when they are conditionally independent given the memory. We also show that this conditional Entropy Power Inequality is optimal in the sense that we can achieve equality asymptotically by choosing a suitable sequence of Gaussian input states. We apply the conditional Entropy Power Inequality to find an array of informat…

Private quantum channels are the quantum analogue of the classical one-time pad. Conditional expectations and trace vectors are notions that have been part of operator algebra theory for several decades. We show that the theory of conditional expectations and trace vectors is intimately related to that of private quantum channels. Specifically we give a new geometric characterization of single qubit private quantum channels that relies on trace vectors. We further show that trace vectors completely describe the private states for quantum channels that are themselves conditional expectations. W…
Berta et al [Phys. Rev. Lett., 121, 040504 (2018)] claim that their result provides a conceptually new extension of the decoupling approach to quantum information theory. We provide an alternate proof using the plain-vanilla decoupling approach for the achievable rates of their main result and hence, their claim is unwarranted, and the title can be misleading when taken in conjunction with the claim.
Conditional quantum oscillations are investigated for quantum gate operations in superconducting flux qubits. We present an effective Hamiltonian which describes a conditional quantum oscillation in two-qubit systems. Rabi-type quantum oscillations are discussed in implementing conditional quantum oscillations to quantum gate operations. Two conditional quantum oscillations depending on the states of control qubit can be synchronized to perform controlled-gate operations by varying system parameters. It is shown that the conditional quantum oscillations with their frequency synchronization mak…
We study the classical, classical-quantum, and quantum parts of conditional mutual information in the ``system-environment-ancilla'' setting of open quantum systems. We perform the separation of conditional mutual information by generalizing the classification of correlations of quantum states. The condition for identifying the classical part of conditional mutual information is given by adapting the no-local-broadcasting theorem to this setting, while the condition for classical-quantum part of conditional mutual information is obtained by considering the multipartite quantum discord and the …
We consider a family of quantum conditional entropies based on the concept of quantum $f$-divergences. First, we explicitly formulate conditions under which the notion of quantum conditional entropy is well defined in this way. In particular, we demand that the value of conditional entropy be independent of any extension of the principal Hilbert space. Using fundamental properties of the quantum $f$-divergences, several interesting relations for such conditional entropies are formulated. We separately examine an especially important case of quantum conditional entropies related to the Tsallis …
In this short note, I show how a recent result of Alhejji and Smith [arXiv:1909.00787] regarding an optimal uniform continuity bound for classical conditional entropy leads to an optimal uniform continuity bound for quantum conditional entropy of classical--quantum states. The bound is optimal in the sense that there always exists a pair of classical--quantum states saturating the bound, and so no further improvements are possible. An immediate application is a uniform continuity bound for entanglement of formation that improves upon the one previously given by Winter in [arXiv:1507.07775]. Tw…
We study the relation between the quantum conditional mutual information and the quantum $α$-Rényi divergences. Considering the totally antisymmetric state we show that it is not possible to attain a proper generalization of the quantum conditional mutual information by optimizing the distance in terms of quantum $α$-Rényi divergences over the set of all Markov states. The failure of the approach considered arises from the observation that a small quantum conditional mutual information does not imply that the state is close to a quantum Markov state.
I design a simple way of distinguishing non-orthogonal quantum states with perfect reliability using only quantum control-not gates in one condition. In this way, we can implement pure quantum communication in directly sending classical information, Ekert quantum cryptography and quantum teleportation without the help of classical communications channel.
The quantum mechanical no-cloning theorem for pure states is generalized and transfered to the quantum logics with a conditional probability calculus in a rather abstract, though simple and basic fashion without relying on a tensor product construction or finite dimension as required in other generalizations.
In this paper a general definition of quantum conditional entropy for infinite-dimensional systems is given based on recent work of Holevo and Shirokov arXiv:1004.2495 devoted to quantum mutual and coherent informations in the infinite-dimensional case. The properties of the conditional entropy such as monotonicity, concavity and subadditivity are also generalized to the infinite-dimensional case.
We introduce an axiomatic approach for characterizing quantum conditional entropy. Our approach relies on two physically motivated axioms: monotonicity under conditional majorization and additivity. We show that these two axioms provide sufficient structure that enable us to derive several key properties applicable to all quantum conditional entropies studied in the literature. Specifically, we prove that any quantum conditional entropy must be negative on certain entangled states and must equal -log(d) on dxd maximally entangled states. We also prove the non-negativity of conditional entropy …
The Conditional Probability Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics replaces the abstract notion of time used in standard Quantum Mechanics by the time that can be read off from a physical clock. The use of physical clocks leads to apparent non-unitary and decoherence. Here we show that a close approximation to standard Quantum Mechanics can be recovered from conditional Quantum Mechanics for semi-classical clocks, and we use these clocks to compute the minimum decoherence predicted by the Conditional Probability Interpretation.
We propose a scheme for conditional quantum logic between two 3-state atoms that share a quantum data-bus such as a single mode optical field in cavity QED systems, or a collective vibrational state of trapped ions. Making use of quantum interference, our scheme achieves successful conditional phase evolution without any real transitions of atomic internal states or populating the quantum data-bus. In addition, it only requires common addressing of the two atoms by external laser fields.
Conditional density matrix represents a quantum state of subsystem in different schemes of quantum communication. Here we discuss some properties of conditional density matrix and its place in general scheme of quantum mechanics.
Insights from quantum information theory show that correlation measures based on quantum entropy are fundamental tools that reveal the entanglement structure of multipartite states. In that spirit, Groisman, Popescu, and Winter [Physical Review A 72, 032317 (2005)] showed that the quantum mutual information $I(A;B)$ quantifies the minimal rate of noise needed to erase the correlations in a bipartite state of quantum systems $AB$. Here, we investigate correlations in tripartite systems $ABE$. In particular, we are interested in the minimal rate of noise needed to apply to the systems $AE$ in or…
We propose an extension of the quantum entropy power inequality for finite dimensional quantum systems, and prove a conditional quantum entropy power inequality by using the majorization relation as well as the concavity of entropic functions also given by Audenaert, Datta, and Ozols [J. Math. Phys. 57, 052202 (2016)]. Here, we make particular use of the fact that a specific local measurement after a partial swap operation (or partial swap quantum channel) acting only on finite dimensional bipartite subsystems does not affect the majorization relation for the conditional output states when a s…
The conditional entropy power inequality is a fundamental inequality in information theory, stating that the conditional entropy of the sum of two conditionally independent vector-valued random variables each with an assigned conditional entropy is minimum when the random variables are Gaussian. We prove the conditional entropy power inequality in the scenario where the conditioning system is quantum. The proof is based on the heat semigroup and on a generalization of the Stam inequality in the presence of quantum conditioning. The entropy power inequality with quantum conditioning will be a k…
A new quantum mechanical notion -- Conditional Density Matrix -- is discussed and is applied to describe some physical processes. This notion is a natural generalization of von Neumann density matrix for such processes as divisions of quantum systems into subsystems and reunifications of subsystems into new joint systems. Conditional Density Matrix assigns a quantum state to a subsystem of a composite system under condition that another part of the composite system is in some pure state.
In this report, we study the reduced conditional dynamics of a quantum system in the case of indirect quantum measurement. The detectors microscopic part (pointer) interacts with the measured system (target) and the environment, which results in a nonunitary interaction between target and pointer. The quantum state evolution conditioned by the measurement result is under investigation. Particularly, we are interested in explicit analytical expressions for the conditional evolution superoperators and basic information characteristics of this measurement process, which is applied to the cavity m…
We propose a scheme for conditional implementation of a quantum phase gate by using distant atoms trapped in different optical cavities. Instead of direct interaction between atoms, the present scheme makes use of quantum interference of polarized photons decaying from the optical cavities to conditionally create the desired quantum phase gate between two distant atoms. The proposed scheme only needs linear optical elements and a two-fold coincidence detection, and are insensitive to the quantum noise. The scheme can be directly used to prepare any quantum state of many distant atoms.
We propose a generalization of the quantum entropy power inequality involving conditional entropies. For the special case of Gaussian states, we give a proof based on perturbation theory for symplectic spectra. We discuss some implications for entanglement-assisted classical communication over additive bosonic noise channels.
In quantum logic there is well-known arbitrariness in choosing a binary operation for conditional. Currently, we have at least three candidates, called the Sasaki conditional, the contrapositive Sasaki conditional, and the relevance conditional. A fundamental problem is to show how the form of the conditional follows from an analysis of operational concepts in quantum theory. Here, we attempt such an analysis through quantum set theory (QST). In this paper, we develop quantum set theory based on quantum logics with those three conditionals, each of which defines different quantum logical truth…
Many observers can simultaneously measure different parts of an environment of a quantum system in order to find out its state. To study this problem we generalize the formalism of conditional master equations to the multiple observer case. To settle some issues of principle which arise in this context (as the state of the system and of the environment are ultimately correlated), we consider an example of a system qubit interacting through controlled nots (CNOTs) with environmental qubits. The state of the system is the easiest to find out for observers who measure in a basis of the environmen…
The aim of this paper is to analyze the reconstructability of quantum mechanics from classical conditional probabilities representing measurement outcomes conditioned on measurement choices. We will investigate how the quantum mechanical representation of classical conditional probabilities is situated within the broader frame of noncommutative representations. To this goal, we adopt some parts of the quantum formalism and ask whether empirical data can constrain the rest of the representation to conform to quantum mechanics. We will show that as the set of empirical data grows conventional el…
We investigate the consistency of conditional quantum probabilities. This is whether there is compatibility between the Kolmogorov-Bayes conditional probabilities and the Born rule. We show that they are not compatible in the sense that there are situations where there is no legitimate density matrix that may reproduce the conditional statistics of the other observable via the Born rule. This is to say that the Gleason theorem does not apply to conditional probabilities. Moreover, we show that when this occurs the joint statistics is nonclassical. We show that conditional probabilities are not…
Using the quantum analog of conditional probability and classical Bayes theorem we discuss some aspects of quantum-classical and classical-classical channels in connection to the recent paper J. Korbicz, P. Horodecki, and R. Horodecki, "Quantum-correlation breaking channels, broadcasting scenarios, and finite Markov chains". Applying the quantum analog of Perron-Frobenius theorem we generalize the result of Korbicz et. al. on full and spectrum broadcasting from quantum-classical channels to arbitrary channels.
In this paper, a lower bound of quantum conditional mutual information is obtained by employing the Peierls-Bogoliubov inequality and Golden Thompson inequality. Comparison with the bounds obtained by other researchers indicates that our result is independent of any measurements. It may give some new insights over squashed entanglement and perturbations of Markov chain states.
We prove continuity of quantum conditional information $S(ρ^{12}| ρ^2)$ with respect to the uniform convergence of states and obtain a bound which is independent of the dimension of the second party. This can, e.g., be used to prove the continuity of squashed entanglement.
A conditional protocol of transferring quantum-correlation in continuous variable regime was experimentally demonstrated. The quantum-correlation in two pairs of twin beams, each characterized by intensity-difference squeezing of 7.0 dB, was transferred to two initially independent idler beams. The quantum-correlation transfer resulted in intensity-difference squeezing of 4.0 dB between two idler beams. The dependence of preparation probability and transfer fidellity on the selection bandwidth was also studied.
Recent developments in quantum computing suggest that it could be possible to make conditional changes to the state of a quantum mechanical system without resorting to classical observation. It is accomplished through collective response of atoms comprising a lattice for the system and involves relative phase adjustments only. We exploit this possibility and describe experimental designs that could help elucidate quantum mechanical properties of these systems and distinguish between interpretations.
We present a novel attack on quantum key distribution based on the idea of adaptive absorption [calsam01]. The conditional beam splitting attack is shown to be much more efficient than the conventional beam spitting attack, achieving a performance similar to the, powerful but currently unfeasible, photon number splitting attack. The implementation of the conditional beam splitting attack, based solely on linear optical elements, is well within reach of current technology.
We give two strengthenings of an inequality for the quantum conditional mutual information of a tripartite quantum state recently proved by Fawzi and Renner, connecting it with the ability to reconstruct the state from its bipartite reductions. Namely we show that the conditional mutual information is an upper bound on the regularised relative entropy distance between the quantum state and its reconstructed version. It is also an upper bound for the measured relative entropy distance of the state to its reconstructed version. The main ingredient of the proof is the fact that the conditional mu…
Due to their potential for long coherence times, dopant ions have long been considered promising candidates for scalable solid state quantum computing. However, the demonstration of two qubit operation has proven to be problematic, largely due to the difficulty of addressing closely spaced ions. Here we use optically active ions and optical frequency addressing to demonstrate a conditional phase shift between two qubits.
In this article we propose a quantum version of Shannon's conditional entropy. Given two density matrices $ρ$ and $σ$ on a finite dimensional Hilbert space and with $S(ρ)=-\trρ\lnρ$ being the usual von Neumann entropy, this quantity $S(ρ|σ)$ is concave in $ρ$ and satisfies $0\le S(ρ|σ)\le S(ρ)$, a quantum analogue of Shannon's famous inequality. Thus we view $S(ρ|σ)$ as the entropy of $ρ$ conditioned by $σ$.
We suggest the improvement of description methods for quantum phase gate implementation in the cavity of QED configuration. Qubits are encoded into two lowest Fock state. Three qubit phase transformation is resulted from the interaction between Rydberg atom and three modes of cavity electromagnetic field. Evolution of conditional field states appearing after atom measurement is described by Kraus transformers. One of these operators is very convenient for phase gate implementation. We show that it corresponds to conditional evolution without quantum jumps. Also we describe cavity based generat…
Quantum networks hold the promise for revolutionary advances in information processing with quantum resources distributed over remote locations via quantum-repeater architectures. Quantum networks are composed of nodes for storing and processing quantum states, and of channels for transmitting states between them. The scalability of such networks relies critically on the ability to perform conditional operations on states stored in separated quantum memories. Here we report the first implementation of such conditional control of two atomic memories, located in distinct apparatuses, which resul…
We define and study a new type of quantum oracle, the quantum conditional oracle, which provides oracle access to the conditional probabilities associated with an underlying distribution. Amongst other properties, we (a) obtain speed-ups over the best known quantum algorithms for identity testing, equivalence testing and uniformity testing of probability distributions; (b) study the power of these oracles for testing properties of boolean functions, and obtain an algorithm for checking whether an $n$-input $m$-output boolean function is balanced or $ε$-far from balanced; and (c) give a sub-lin…
We propose a scheme to for fast conditional phase shift and creation entanglement of two qubits that interact with a common heat bath. Dynamical decoupling is applied in the scheme so that it works even in the regime of strong interaction between qubits and environment. Our scheme does not request any direct interaction between the two qubits.
Quantum logic gates provide fundamental examples of conditional quantum dynamics. They could form the building blocks of general quantum information processing systems which have recently been shown to have many interesting non--classical properties. We describe a simple quantum logic gate, the quantum controlled--NOT, and analyse some of its applications. We discuss two possible physical realisations of the gate; one based on Ramsey atomic interferometry and the other on the selective driving of optical resonances of two subsystems undergoing a dipole--dipole interaction.
We study, in theory and experiment, the quantum properties of correlated light fields measured with click-counting detectors providing incomplete information on the photon statistics. We establish a correlation parameter for the conditional statistics, and we derive the corresponding nonclassicality criteria for detecting conditional quantum correlations. Classical bounds for Pearson's correlation parameter are formulated that allow us, once they are violated, to determine nonclassical correlations via the joint statistics. On the one hand, we demonstrate nonclassical correlations in terms of …
We propose a scheme to realize the conditional phase gate (CPG) and quantum state transfer (QST) between two qubits (acted by nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers) based on off-resonant quantum Zeno dynamics. We also consider the entanglement dynamics of two qubits in this system. Since no cavity photons or excited levels of the NV center is populated during the whole process, the scheme is immune to the decay of cavity and spontaneous emission of the NV center. The strictly numerical simulation shows that the fidelities of QST and CPG are high even in the presence of realistic imperfections.
Large conditional phase shifts from coupled atom-cavity systems are a key requirement for building a spin photon interface. This in turn would allow the realisation of hybrid quantum information schemes using spin and photonic qubits. Here we perform high resolution reflection spectroscopy of a quantum dot resonantly coupled to a pillar microcavity. We show both the change in reflectivity as the quantum dot is tuned through the cavity resonance, and measure the conditional phase shift induced by the quantum dot using an ultra stable interferometer. These techniques could be extended to the stu…
Iterated bipartite quantum games are implemented in terms of the discrete-time quantum walk on the line. Our proposal allows for conditional strategies, as two rational agents make a choice from a restricted set of two-qubit unitary operations. Several frequently used classical strategies give rise to families of corresponding quantum strategies. A quantum version of the Prisoner's Dilemma in which both players use mixed strategies is presented as a specific example. Since there are now quantum walk physical implementations at a proof-of principle stage, this connection may represent a step to…
In this paper we introduce a definition for conditional energy changes due to general quantum measurements, as the change in the conditional energy evaluated before, and after, the measurement process. By imposing minimal physical requirements on these conditional energies, we show that the most general expression for the conditional energy after the measurement is simply the expected value of the Hamiltonian given the post-measurement state. Conversely, the conditional energy before the measurement process is shown to be given by the real component of the weak value of the Hamiltonian. Our de…
We theoretically study the conditional counting statistics of electron transport through a system consisting of a single quantum dot (SQD) or coherently coupled double quantum dots (DQD's) monitored by a nearby quantum point contact (QPC) using the generating functional approach with the maximum eigenvalue of the evolution equation matrix method, the quantum trajectory theory method (Monte Carlo method), and an efficient method we develop. The conditional current cumulants that are significantly different from their unconditional counterparts can provide additional information and insight into…
Experimental realization of quantum information processing in the field of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) has been well established. Implementation of conditional phase shift gate has been a significant step, which has lead to realization of important algorithms such as Grover's search algorithm and quantum Fourier transform. This gate has so far been implemented in NMR by using coupling evolution method. We demonstrate here the implementation of the conditional phase shift gate using transition selective pulses. As an application of the gate, we demonstrate Grover's search algorithm and qua…
We define quantum-like probabilistic behaviour as behaviour which is impossible to describe by using the classical probability model. We discuss the conjecture that cognitive behaviour is quantum-like. There is presented the scheme for an experimental test for quantum-like cognitive behaviour based on a generalization of the famous Bell's inequality. This generalization is an analogue of Bell's inequality, but for conditional probabilities. The use of conditional probabilities (instead of simultaneous probability distributions for pairs of observables in the original Bell's inequality) gives t…
We analyze and show experimental results of the conditional purity, the quantum discord and other related measures of quantum correlation in mixed two-qubit states constructed from a pair of photons in identical polarization states. The considered states are relevant for the description of spin pair states in interacting spin chains in a transverse magnetic field. We derive clean analytical expressions for the conditional local purity and other correlation measures obtained as a result of a remote local projective measurement, which are fully verified by the experimental results. A simple exac…
Quantum steering is an asymmetric correlation which occupies a place between entanglement and Bell nonlocality. In the paradigmatic scenario involving the protagonists Alice and Bob, the entangled state shared between them, is said to be steerable from Alice to Bob if the steering assemblage on Bob's side do not admit a local hidden state (LHS) description. Quantum conditional entropies, on the other hand provide for another characterization of quantum correlations. Contrary to our common intuition conditional entropies for some entangled states can be negative, marking a significant departure…
We use a novel form of quantum conditional probability to define new measures of quantum information in a dynamical context. We explore relationships between our new quantities and standard measures of quantum information, such as von Neumann entropy. These quantities allow us to find new proofs of some standard results in quantum information theory, such as the concavity of von Neumann entropy and Holevo's theorem. The existence of an underlying probability distribution helps shed light on the conceptual underpinnings of these results.
In this paper I demonstrate that the quantum correlations of polarization (or spin) observables used in Bell's argument against local realism have to be interpreted as {\it conditional} quantum correlations. By taking into account additional sources of randomness in Bell's type experiments, i.e., supplementary to source randomness, I calculate (in the standard quantum formalism) the complete quantum correlations. The main message of the quantum theory of measurement (due to von Neumann) is that complete correlations can be essentially smaller than the conditional ones. Additional sources of ra…
We propose several parametrization-free solutions to the problem of quantum state reduction control by means of continuous measurement and smooth quantum feedback. In particular, we design a feedback law for which almost global stochastic feedback stabilization can be proved analytically by means of Lyapunov techinques. This synthesis arises very naturally from the physics of the problem, as it relies on the variance associated with the quantum filtering process.
We propose and experimentally verify a cooling limit for a quantum channel going through an incoherent environment. The environment consists of a large number of independent non-interacting and non-interfering elementary quantum systems - qubits. The qubits travelling through the channel can only be randomly replaced by environmental qubits. We investigate a conditional cooling limit that exploits an additional probing output. The limit specifies when the single-qubit channel is quantum, i.e. it preserves entanglement. It is a fundamental condition for entanglement-based quantum technology.
We analyze two conditionally solvable quantum-mechanical models: a one-dimensional sextic oscillator and a perturbed Coulomb problem. Both lead to a three-term recurrence relation for the expansion coefficients. We show diagrams of the distribution of their exact eigenvalues with the addition of accurate ones from variational calculations. We discuss the symmetry of such distributions. We also comment on the wrong interpretation of the exact eigenvalues and eigenfunctions by some researchers that has led to the prediction of allowed cyclotron frequencies and field intensities.
