Energy Dependent Calculations of Fission Product, Prompt, and Delayed Neutron Yields for Neutron Induced Fission on $^{235}$U, $^{238}$U, and $^{239}$Pu
We perform energy dependent calculations of independent and cumulative fission product yields for $^{235}$U, $^{238}$U, and $^{239}$Pu in the first chance fission region. Starting with the primary fission fragment distributions taken from available experimental data and analytical functions based on assumptions for the excitation energy and spin-parity distributions, the Hauser-Feshbach statistical decay treatment for fission fragment de-excitation is applied to more than 1,000 fission fragments for the incident neutron energies up to 5 MeV. The calculated independent fission product yields are then used as an input of $β$-decay to produce the cumulative yield, and summation calculations are performed. Model parameters in these procedures are adjusted by applying the Bayesian technique at the thermal energy for $^{235}$U and $^{239}$Pu and in the fast energy range for $^{238}$U. The calculated fission observable quantities, such as the energy-dependent fission yields, and prompt and delayed neutron yields, are compared with available experimental data. We also study a possible impact of the second chance fission opening on the energy dependence of the delayed neutron yield by extrapolating the calculation.
We present $β$-delayed neutron emission and $β$-delayed fission calculations for heavy, neutron-rich nuclei using the coupled Quasi-Particle Random Phase Approximation plus Hauser-Feshbach (QRPA+HF) approach. From the initial population of a compound nucleus after $β$-decay, we follow the statistical decay taking into account competition between neutrons, $γ$-rays, and fission. We find a region of the chart of nuclides where the probability of $β$-delayed fission is $\sim100$%, that likely prevents the production of superheavy elements in nature. For a subset of nuclei near the neutron driplin…
A role of β-delayed neutron emission and fission in r-process nucleosynthesis attracts a high interest. Although the number of study on them covering r-process nuclei is increasing recently, uncertainties of β-delayed neutron and fission are still large for r-process simulations. Our purpose is to make a new database on β-delayed neutron emission and fission rates. To this end, the data that are not investigated experimentally have to be predicted. Microscopic theoretical approaches based on a nuclear energy density functional and statistical models are one of the competent tools for the predi…
The Hauser-Feshbach fission fragment decay model, $\mathtt{HF^3D}$, which calculates the statistical decay of fission fragments, has been expanded to include multi-chance fission, up to neutron incident energies of 20 MeV. The deterministic decay takes as input pre-scission quantities - fission probabilities and the average energy causing fission - and post-scission quantities - yields in mass, charge, total kinetic energy, spin, and parity. From these fission fragment initial conditions, the full decay is followed through both prompt and delayed particle emissions, allowing for the calculatio…
Incident neutron energy dependence of delayed neutron yields of uranium and plutonium isotopes is investigated. A summation calculation of decay and fission yield data is employed, and the energy dependence of the latter part is considered in a phenomenological way. Our calculation systematically reproduces the energy dependence of delayed neutron yields by introducing an energy dependence of the most probable charge and the odd-even effect. The calculated fission yields are assessed by comparison with JENDL/FPY-2011, delayed neutron activities, and decay heats. Although the fission yields in …
Beta-delayed neutron emission and $β$-delayed fission ($β$df) probabilities were calculated for heavy, neutron-rich nuclei using the Los Alamos coupled Quasi-Particle Random Phase Approximation plus Hauser-Feshbach (QRPA+HF) approach. In this model, the compound nucleus is initially populated by $β$-decay and is followed through subsequent statistical decays taking into account competition between neutrons, $γ$-rays and fission. The primary output of these calculations includes branching ratios along with neutron and $γ$-ray spectra. We find a relatively large region of heavy nuclides where th…
Consideration of memory of spin and parity in the fissioning compound nucleus by applying the Hauser-Feshbach fission fragment decay model to photonuclear reactions
Background: The process of beta-delayed fission (bDF) provides a versatile tool to study low-energy fission in nuclei far away from the beta-stability line, especially for nuclei which do not fission spontaneously. Purpose: The aim of this paper is to investigate systematic trends in bDF partial half-lives. Method: A semi-phenomenological framework was developed to systematically account for the behavior of bDF partial half-lives. Results: The bDF partial half-life appears to exponentially depend on the difference between the Q value for beta decay of the parent nucleus and the fission-barrier…
We present a self-consistency analysis of fission product yield evaluations. Anomalous yields are determined using a series of simple conservation checks and comparing charge distributions with common parameterizations. The total prompt neutron multiplicity as a function of product mass $\barν_T(A)$ is derived directly from the independent fission product yields using average charge conservation. This method is checked against Monte Carlo simulations of the de-excitation of the fission fragments in a Hauser-Feshbach statistical decay framework. The derived $\barν_T(A)$ is compared with experim…
The prompt fission neutron spectra for neutron-induced fission of 233U for low energy neutrons (below 6 MeV) are calculated using the nuclear evaporation theory with a semi-empirical method, in which the partition of the total excitation energy between the fission fragments for the nth+233U fission reactions are determined with the available experimental and evaluation data. The calculated prompt fission neutron spectra agree well with the experimental data. The proportions of high- energy outgoing neutrons of prompt fission neutron spectrum versus incident neutron energies are investigated wi…
Following the formation of an excited muonic atom, inner shell transitions may proceed without photon emission by inverse internal conversion, i.e. the muonic excitation energy is transferred to the nucleus. In actinides, the 2p -> 1s and the 3d -> 1s muonic transitions result in excitation of the nuclear giant dipole and giant quadrupole resonances, respectively, which act as doorway states for fission. The nuclear excitation energy is typically 6.5 - 10 MeV. Because the muon lifetime is long compared to the timescale of prompt nuclear fission, the motion of the muon in the Coulomb field of t…
The Hauser-Feshbach Fission Fragment Decay (HF$^3$D) model is extended to calculate the prompt fission neutron spectrum (PFNS) for the thermal neutron induced fission on $^{235}$U, where the evaporated neutrons from all possible fission fragment pairs are aggregated. By studying model parameter sensitivities on the calculated PFNS, as well as non-statistical behavior of low-lying discrete level spin distribution, we conclude that discrepancies between the aggregation calculation and the experimental PFNS seen at higher neutron emission energies can be attributed to both the primary fission fra…
Earlier studies of 239Pu(n, f) have been extended to incident neutron energies up to 20 MeV within the framework of the event-by-event fission model FREYA, into which we have incorporated multichance fission and pre-equilibrium neutron emission. The main parameters controlling prompt fission neutron evaporation have been identified and the prompt fission neutron spectrum has been analyzed by fitting those parameters to the average neutron multiplicity nubar from ENDF-B/VII.0, including the energy-energy correlations in nubar(E) obtained by fitting to the experimental nubar data used in the END…
This study addresses, for the first time, the total prompt energy release and its components for the fission of 235-U, 238-U, and 239-Pu as a function of the kinetic energy of the neutron inducing the fission. The components are extracted from experimental measurements, where they exist, together with model-dependent calculation, interpolation, and extrapolation. While the components display clear dependencies upon the incident neutron energy, their sums display only weak, yet definite, energy dependencies. Also addressed is the total prompt energy deposition in fission for the same three syst…
We solve the time-dependent Dirac equation for a muon which is initially bound to a fissioning actinide nucleus. The computations are carried out on a 3-D cartesian lattice utilizing the Basis-Spline collocation method. The muon dynamics is sensitive to the nuclear energy dissipation between the outer fission barrier and the scission point. From a comparison with experimental data we find a dissipated energy of about 10 MeV and a fission time delay due to friction of order $2 \times 10^{-21}$ s.
The CGMF code implements the Hauser-Feshbach statistical nuclear reaction model to follow the de-excitation of fission fragments by successive emissions of prompt neutrons and $γ$ rays. The Monte Carlo technique is used to facilitate the analysis of complex distributions and correlations among the prompt fission observables. Starting from initial configurations for the fission fragments in mass, charge, kinetic energy, excitation energy, spin, and parity, $Y(A,Z,KE,U,J,π)$, CGMF samples neutron and $γ$-ray probability distributions at each stage of the decay process, conserving energy, spin an…
Background: Recent experiments on beta-delayed fission reported an asymmetric mass yield in the neutron-deficient nucleus 180Hg. Earlier experiments in the mass region A=190-200 close to the beta-stability line, using the (p,f) and (α,f) reactions, observed a more symmetric distribution of fission fragments. While the beta-delayed fission of 180Hg can be associated with relatively low excitation energy, this is not the case for light-ion reactions, which result in warm compound nuclei. Purpose: To elucidate the roles of proton and neutron numbers and excitation energy in determining symmetric …
The empirical calculations of the prompt neutrons average number for photofission of the 232Th, 233U, 234U, 235U, 236U, 238U, 237Np, 239Pu and 241Am actinides has been done as a function of photon energy, mass and charge of the nuclei, which can be used to evaluate the average number for photo-fission of nuclides for which no or scarce data are available.
The emission of prompt fission $γ$ rays within a few nanoseconds to a few microseconds following the scission point is studied in the Hauser-Feshbach formalism applied to the deexcitation of primary excited fission fragments. Neutron and $γ$-ray evaporations from fully accelerated fission fragments are calculated in competition at each stage of the decay, and the role of isomers in the fission products, before $β$-decay, is analyzed. The time evolution of the average total $γ$-ray energy, average total $γ$-ray multiplicity, and fragment-specific $γ$-ray spectra, is presented in the case of neu…
Employing a recently developed Monte Carlo model, we study the fission of 240Pu induced by neutrons with energies from thermal to just below the threshold for second chance fission. Current measurements of the mean number of prompt neutrons emitted in fission, together with less accurate measurements of the neutron energy spectra, place remarkably fine constraints on predictions of microscopic calculations. In particular, the total excitation energy of the nascent fragments must be specified to within 1 MeV to avoid disagreement with measurements of the mean neutron multiplicity. The combinati…
We evaluate the impact of using sets of fission yields given by the GEF code for spontaneous (sf), neutron-induced ((n,f)), and beta-delayed (betadf) fission processes which take into account the approximate initial excitation energy of the fissioning compound nucleus. We further explore energy-dependent fission dynamics in the r process by considering the sensitivity of our results to the treatment of the energy sharing and de-excitation of the fission fragments using the FREYA code. We show that the asymmetric-to-symmetric yield trends predicted by GEF can reproduce the high-mass edge of the…
We propose a novel method to extract the prompt neutron multiplicity distribution, $P(ν)$, in fission reactions based on correlations between prompt neutrons, $γ$ rays, and fragment kinetic energy arising from energy conservation. In this approach, only event-by-event measurements of the total $γ$-ray energy released as a function of the total kinetic energy (TKE) of the fission fragments are performed, and no neutron detection is required. Using the $\texttt{CGMF}$ fission event generator, we illustrate the method and explore the accuracy of extracting the neutron multiplicity distribution wh…
The Hauser-Feshbach statistical model is applied to the de-excitation of primary fission fragments using input mass yields calculated with macroscopic-microscopic models of the potential energy surface. We test the sensitivity of the prompt fission observables to the input mass yields for two important reactions, $^{235}$U$(n_\mathrm{th},f)$ and $^{239}$Pu$(n_\mathrm{th},f)$, for which good experimental data exist. General traits of the mass yields, such as the location of the peaks and their widths, can impact both the prompt neutron and $γ$-ray multiplicities, as well as their spectra. Speci…
Several sources of angular anisotropy for fission fragments and prompt neutrons have been studied in neutron-induced fission reactions. These include kinematic recoils of the target from the incident neutron beam and the fragments from the emission of the prompt neutrons, preferential directions of the emission of the fission fragments with respect to the beam axis due to the population of particular transition states at the fission barrier, and forward-peaked angular distributions of pre-equilibrium neutrons which are emitted before the formation of a compound nucleus. In addition, there are …
The present work concerns two successful models used today: Point by Point (PbP) and the Monte Carlo approaches. The description of the PbP model and of the extended Los Alamos model for higher energies that takes into account the secondary chains and ways is given in Chapter II. In this chapter are given also examples of PbP and most probable fragmentation approach calculations for various quantities which characterize prompt emission: multi-parametric matrices, quantities as a function of fragment mass, quantities as a function of the TKE and total average quantities, for different spontaneo…
Detailed information on the fission process can be inferred from the observation, modeling and theoretical understanding of prompt fission neutron and $γ$-ray~observables. Beyond simple average quantities, the study of distributions and correlations in prompt data, e.g., multiplicity-dependent neutron and \gray~spectra, angular distributions of the emitted particles, $n$-$n$, $n$-$γ$, and $γ$-$γ$~correlations, can place stringent constraints on fission models and parameters that would otherwise be free to be tuned separately to represent individual fission observables. The FREYA~and CGMF~codes…
The $(n,γf)$ process is reviewed in light of modern nuclear reaction calculations in both slow and fast neutron-induced fission reactions on $^{235}$U and $^{239}$Pu. Observed fluctuations of the average prompt fission neutron multiplicity and average total $γ$-ray energy below 100 eV incident neutron energy are interpreted in this framework. The surprisingly large contribution of the M1 transitions to the pre-fission $γ$-ray spectrum of $^{239}$Pu is explained by the dominant fission probabilities of 0$^+$ and $2^+$ transition states, which can only be accessed from compound nucleus states fo…
We discuss possible avenues to study fission dynamics starting from a time-dependent mean-field approach. Previous attempts to study fission dynamics using the time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) theory are analyzed. We argue that different initial conditions may be needed to describe fission dynamics depending on the specifics of the fission phenomenon and propose various approaches towards this goal. In particular, we provide preliminary calculations for studying fission following a heavy-ion reaction using TDHF with a density contraint. Regarding prompt muon-induced fission, we also suggest …

Background: Recent experiments on beta-delayed fission in the mercury-lead region and the discovery of asym- metric fission in 180 Hg [1] have stimulated theoretical interest in the mechanism of fission in heavy nuclei. Purpose: We study fission modes and fusion valleys in 180 Hg and 198 Hg to reveal the role of shell effects in pre-scission region and explain the experimentally observed fragment mass asymmetry and its variation with A. Methods: We use the self-consistent nuclear density functional theory employing Skyrme and Gogny energy density functionals. Results: The potential energy surf…
The series of Uranium isotopes with $N=154 \sim 172$ around the magic number N=162/164 are identified to be thermally fissile. The thermal neutron fission of a typical representative $^{249}$U of this region amenable to synthesis in the radioactive ion beam facilities is considered here. Semiempirical study of fission barrier height and width shows this nucleus to be infinitely stable against spontaneous fission due to increase in barrier width arising out of excess neutrons. Calculation of probability of fragment mass yields and microscopic study in relativistic mean field theory, show this n…
Two methods of the total excitation energy (TXE) partition between complementary fission fragments (FF) are compared: one based on the "classical" hypothesis of prompt neutron emission from fully accelerated FF with both fragments having the same residual nuclear temperature distribution, the second one on the systematic behavior of the experimental multiplicity ratio νH/(νL+νH) as a function of the heavy fragment mass number AH,the complementary FF having different residual temperature distributions. These methods were applied on six fissioning systems: 233,235U(nth,f), 239Pu(nth,f), 237Np(n5.5…
To disentangle the role of shell effects and dynamics, fission fragment mass distributions of $^{191}$Au, a nucleus in the newly identified island of mass asymmetric fission in the sub-lead region, have been measured down to excitation energy of $\approx$20 MeV above the fission barrier via two different entrance channels, viz. $^{16}$O+$^{175}$Lu and $^{37}$Cl+$^{154}$Sm reactions. Apart from having signature of the shell effects in both the cases, clear experimental evidence of quasifission has been observed in the mass distributions of the Cl induced reaction, that has also been substantiat…
The effect of the right-left asymmetry is considered in the angular distribution of gamma quanta from fission of U-235 by polarised thermal neutrons, which depends on the polarisation of the neutrons with respect to the gamma-fission plane. Electric dipole radiation from fission fragments arising due to the Strutinsky-Denisov induced polarisation mechanism may give rise to such an effect. Earlier, this mechanism was shown to fit the non-statistical part observed in the gamma spectrum from spontaneous fission of Cf-252. The calculated value of the magnitude of the asymmetry parameter is on the …
The recent advent of experimental techniques in which the dynamical characteristics of fission fragments are determined more accurately, prompted us to investigate the angular momentum acquired by fragments in a model which describes the cold(neutronless) fission of $^{252}$Cf as the decay of a giant nuclear molecule. The molecular configuration is a consequence of the interplay between the attractive nuclear part and the repulsive Coulomb+nuclear forces. The basic ideea of the present approach is to separate the radial(fission) modes describing the decay of the molecule from the modes associa…

Within the two-center shell model parameterization we have defined the optimal shape which fissioning nuclei attain just before the scission and calculated the total deformation energy (liquid drop part plus the shell correction) as function of the mass asymmetry and elongation at the scission point. The three minima corresponding to mass symmetric and two mass asymmetric peaks in the mass distribution of fission fragments are found in the deformation energy at the scission point. The calculated deformation energy is used in quasi-static approximation for the estimation of the total kinetic an…
The existence of a new type of cluster decay called "collinear cluster tri-partition" (CCT) is discussed by an analysis of the landscape of the potential energy surface (PES). The total energy of the ternary system is found as a sum the binding energies of fragments and nucleus-nucleus interaction between them. The pre-scission state of the ternary system is assumed to be arranged as a chain of the three fragments along a straight line. Minima and valleys of the PES are determined by variation of the proton and neutron distributions between them. Pre-scission prompt emission of neutrons is ass…
The fusion and transfer induced fission reaction $^{9}$Be($^{238}$U,~f) with 6.2 MeV/u beam energy, using a unique setup consisting of AGATA, VAMOS++ and EXOGAM detectors, was used to populate through the fission process and study the neutron-rich $^{119,121}$In isotopes. This setup enabled the prompt-delayed $γ$-ray spectroscopy of isotopes in the time range of $100~\rm{ns} - 200~μ\rm{s}$. In the odd-$A$ $^{119,121}$In isotopes, indications of a short half-life $19/2^{-}$ isomeric state, in addition to the previously known $25/2^{+}$ isomeric state, were observed from the present data. Furthe…

A detailed investigation on the relative isotopic distributions has been carried out for the first time in case of even-even correlated fission fragments for the $^{235}$U($n_{th}$,$f$) fission reaction. High-statistics data were obtained in a prompt $γ$ ray spectroscopy measurement during the EXILL campaign at ILL, Grenoble, France. The extensive off-line analysis of the coincidence data have been carried out using four different coincidence methods. Combining the results from 2-dimensional $γ-γ$ and 3-dimensional $γ-γ-γ$ coincidence analysis, a comprehensive picture of the relative isotopic …
