There is an abundance of useful fluctuation identities for one-sided Lévy processes observed up to an independent exponentially distributed time horizon. We show that all the fundamental formulas generalize to time horizons having matrix exponential distributions, and the structure is preserved. Essentially, the positive killing rate is replaced by a matrix with eigenvalues in the right half of the complex plane which, in particular, applies to the positive root of the Laplace exponent and the scale function. Various fundamental properties of thus obtained matrices and functions are established, resulting in an easy to use toolkit. An important application concerns deterministic time horizons which can be well approximated by concentrated matrix exponential distributions. Numerical illustrations are also provided.
We study the properties of the exponential functional $\int\_0^{+ \infty} e^{- X^{\uparrow} (t)}dt$ where $X^{\uparrow}$ is a spectrally one-sided L{é}vy process conditioned to stay positive. In particular, we study finiteness, self-decomposability, existence of finite exponential moments, asymptotic tail at $0$ and smoothness of the density.
A new characterization of the exponential distribution is obtained. It is based on an equation involving randomly shifted (translated) order statistics. No specific distribution is assumed for the shift random variables. The proof uses a recently developed technique including the Maclaurin series expansion of the probability density of the parent variable.
For an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process driven by a double exponential jump diffusion process, we obtain formulas for the joint Laplace transform of it and its occupation times. The approach used is remarkable and can be extended to investigate the occupation times of an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process driven by a more general Levy process.
We first introduce and derive some basic properties of a two-parameters family of one-sided Levy processes. Their Laplace exponents are given in terms of the Pochhammer symbol. This family includes, in a limit case, the family of Brownian motion with drifts. Then, we proceed by computing the density of the law of the exponential functional associated to some elements of this family (and their dual) and some transformations of these elements. These densities are expressed in terms of the Wright hypergeometric functions. By means of probabilistic arguments, we derive some interesting properties …
The purpose of this note is to describe, in terms of a power series, the distribution function of the exponential functional, taken at some independent exponential time, of a spectrally negative Lévy process ξwith unbounded variation. We also derive a Geman-Yor type formula for Asian options prices in a financial market driven by e^ξ.
Infinite horizon optimal stopping problems for a Lévy processes with a two-sided reward function are considered. A two-sided verification theorem is presented in terms of the overall supremum and the overall infimum of the process. A result to compute the angle of the value function at the optimal thresholds of the stopping region is given. To illustrate the results, the optimal stopping problem of a compound Poisson process with two-sided exponential jumps and a two-sided payoff function is solved. In this example, the smooth-pasting condition does not hold.
In this paper we analyze the transient behavior of the workload process in a Lévy input queue. We are interested in the value of the workload process at a random epoch; this epoch is distributed as the sum of independent exponential random variables. We consider both cases of spectrally one-sided Lévy input processes, for which we succeed in deriving explicit results. As an application we approximate the mean and the Laplace transform of the workload process after a deterministic time.
Sticky Brownian motion on the real line can be obtained as a weak solution of a system of stochastic differential equations. We find the conditional distribution of the process given the driving Brownian motion, both at an independent exponential time and at a fixed time t>0. As a classical problem, we find the distribution of the occupation times of a half-line, and at 0, which is the sticky point for the process.
The paper presents some distributional properties of logistic order statistics subject to independent exponential one-sided and two-sided shifts. Utilizing these properties, we extend several known results and obtain some new characterizations of the logistic distribution.
We give a Cramér moderate deviation expansion for martingales with differences having finite conditional moments of order $2+ρ, ρ\in (0,1],$ and finite one-sided conditional exponential moments. The upper bound of the range of validity and the remainder of our expansion are both optimal. Consequently, it leads to a "half-side" moderate deviation principle for martingales. It is worth mentioning that our result is new even for independent random variables. Moreover, applications to quantile coupling inequality, $β$-mixing and $ψ$-mixing sequences are discussed.
We consider the one-sided exit problem for (fractionally) integrated random walks and Lévy processes. We prove that the rate of decrease of the non-exit probability -- the so-called survival exponent -- is universal in this class of processes. In particular, the survival exponent can be inferred from the (fractionally) integrated Brownian motion. This, in particular, extends Sinai's result on the survival exponent for the integrated simple random walk to general random walks with some finite exponential moment. Further, we prove existence and monotonicity of the survival exponent of fractional…

This paper continues the study of a kernel family which uses the Cauchy-Stieltjes kernel in place of the celebrated exponential kernel of the exponential families theory. We extend the theory to cover generating measures with support that is unbounded on one side. We illustrate the need for such an extension by showing that cubic pseudo-variance functions correspond to free-infinitely divisible laws without the first moment. We also determine the domain of means, advancing the understanding of Cauchy-Stieltjes kernel families also for compactly supported generating measures.
For a spectrally positive strictly stable process with index in (1,2), the paper obtains i) the density of the time when the process makes first exit from an interval by hitting the interval's lower end point before jumping over its upper end point, and ii) the joint distribution of the time, the undershoot, and the jump of the process when it makes first exit the other way around. For i), the density of the time of first exit is expressed as an infinite sum of functions, each the product of a polynomial and an exponential function, with all coefficients determined by the roots of a Mittag-Lef…
We consider general Markov processes with absorption and provide criteria ensuring the exponential convergence in total variation of the distribution of the process conditioned not to be absorbed. The first one is based on two-sided estimates on the transition kernel of the process and the second one on gradient estimates on its semigroup. We apply these criteria to multi-dimensional diffusion processes in bounded domains of $R^d$ or in compact Riemannian manifolds with boundary, with absorption at the boundary.
We consider the long-time behavior of an explicit tamed Euler scheme applied to a class of stochastic differential equations driven by additive noise, under a one-sided Lipschitz continuity condition. The setting encompasses drift nonlinearities with polynomial growth. First, we prove that moment bounds for the numerical scheme hold, with at most polynomial dependence with respect to the time horizon. Second, we apply this result to obtain error estimates, in the weak sense, in terms of the time-step size and of the time horizon, to quantify the error to approximate averages with respect to th…
Sinai's random walk in random environment shows interesting patterns on the exponential time scale. We characterize the patterns that appear on infinitely many time scales after appropriate rescaling (a functional law of iterated logarithm). The curious rate function captures the difference between one-sided and two-sided behavior.
For the asymmetric simple exclusion process on the integer lattice with two-sided Bernoulli initial condition, we derive exact formulas for the following quantities: (1) the probability that site x is occupied at time t; (2) a correlation function, the probability that site 0 is occupied at time 0 and site x is occupied at time t; (3) the distribution function for the total flux across 0 at time t and its exponential generating function.
The optimal stopping problem for a Hunt processes on $\R$ is considered via the representation theory of excessive functions. In particular, we focus on infinite horizon (or perpetual) problems with one-sided structure, that is, there exists a point $x^*$ such that the stopping region is of the form $[x^*,+\infty)$. Corresponding results for two-sided problems are also indicated. The main result is a spectral representation of the value function in terms of the Green kernel of the process. Specializing in Lévy processes, we obtain, by applying the Wiener-Hopf factorization, a general represent…
In this paper, under a one-sided Lipschitz condition on the drift coefficient we adopt (via contraction principle) a exponential approximation argument to investigate large deviations for neutral stochastic functional differential equations.
Let $S_n$ be a centered random walk with a finite variance, and define the new sequence $A_n:=\sum_{i=1}^n S_i$, which we call an integrated random walk. We are interested in the asymptotics of $$p_N:=P(\min_{1 \le k \le N} A_k \ge 0)$$ as $N \to \infty$. Sinai (1992) proved that $p_N \asymp N^{-1/4}$ if $S_n$ is a simple random walk. We show that $p_N \asymp N^{-1/4}$ for some other types of random walks that include double-sided exponential and double-sided geometric walks, both not necessarily symmetric. We also prove that $p_N \le c N^{-1/4}$ for lattice walks and for upper exponential wal…
The recent contribution Dieker & Mikosch (2015) [1] obtained important representations of max-stable stationary Brown-Resnick random fields $ζ_Z$ with a spectral representation determined by a Gaussian process $Z$. With motivations from \cite{DM} we derive for some general $Z$, representations for $ζ_Z$ via exponential tilting of $Z$. Our main findings concern a) Dieker-Mikosch representations of max-stable processes, b) two-sided extensions of stationary max-stable processes, c) inf-argmax representation of any max-stable distribution, and d) new formulas for generalised Pickands constants. O…
For any two-sided jumping $α$-stable process, where $1 < α< 2$, we find an explicit identity for the law of the first hitting time of the origin. This complements existing work in the symmetric case and the spectrally one-sided case; cf. Yano-Yano-Yor (2009) and Cordero (2010), and Peskir (2008) respectively. We appeal to the Lamperti-Kiu representation of Chaumont-Pantí-Rivero (2011) for real-valued self-similar Markov processes. Our main result follows by considering a vector-valued functional equation for the Mellin transform of the integrated exponential Markov additive process in the Lamp…
We consider the system of one-sided reflected Brownian motions which is in variational duality with Brownian last passage percolation. We show that it has integrable transition probabilities, expressed in terms of Hermite polynomials and hitting times of exponential random walks, and that it converges in the 1:2:3 scaling limit to the KPZ fixed point, the scaling invariant Markov process defined in [MQR17] and believed to govern the long time large scale fluctuations for all models in the KPZ universality class. Brownian last passage percolation was shown recently in [DOV18] to converge to the…
Given a spectrally negative Lévy process, we predict, in a $L_1$ sense, the last passage time of the process below zero before an independent exponential time. This optimal prediction problem generalises Baurdoux and Pedraza (2020) where the infinite horizon problem is solved. Using a similar argument as that in Urusov (2005), we show that this optimal prediction problem is equivalent to solving an optimal prediction problem in a finite horizon setting. Surprisingly (unlike the infinite horizon problem) an optimal stopping time is based on a curve that is killed at the moment the mean of the e…

We establish metastability in the sense of Lebowitz and Penrose under practical and simple hypothesis for (families of) Markov chains on finite configuration space in some asymptotic regime, including the case of configuration space size going to infinity. By comparing restricted ensemble and quasi-stationary measures, we study point-wise convergence velocity of Yaglom limits and prove asymptotic exponential exit law. We introduce soft measures as interpolation between restricted ensemble and quasi-stationary measure to prove an asymptotic exponential transition law on a generally different ti…
To predict the behavior of a population game when time becomes very long, the process that characterizes the evolution of our game dynamics must be reversible. Known games satisfying this are 2 strategy games as well as potential games with an exponential protocol. We will try to extend the study of infinite horizons for what are called symetric strategy games.
The basic $κ$-color box-ball (BBS) system is an integrable cellular automaton on one dimensional lattice whose local states take $\{0,1,\cdots,κ\}$ with $0$ regarded as an empty box. The time evolution is defined by a combinatorial rule of quantum group theoretical origin, and the complete set of conserved quantities is given by a $κ$-tuple of Young diagrams. In the randomized BBS, a probability distribution on $\{0,1,\cdots,κ\}$ to independently fill the consecutive $n$ sites in the initial state induces a highly nontrivial probability measure on the $κ$-tuple of those invariant Young diagram…
