Let $Φ$ : R n $\rightarrow$ R $\cup$ {+$\infty$} be an even convex function and L$Φ$ be its Legendre transform. We prove the functional form of Mahler conjecture concerning the functional volume product P ($Φ$) = e --$Φ$ e --L$Φ$ in dimension 2: we give the sharp lower bound of this quantity and characterize the equality case. The proof uses the computation of the derivative in t of P (t$Φ$) and ideas due to Meyer [M] for unconditional convex bodies, adapted to the functional case by Fradelizi-Meyer [FM2] and extended for symmetric convex bodies in dimension 3 by Iriyeh-Shibata [IS] (see also [FHMRZ]).
The aim of this paper is to develop the $L_p$ John ellipsoid for the geometry of log-concave functions. Using the results of the $L_p$ Minkowski theory for log-concave function established in \cite{fan-xin-ye-geo2020}, we characterize the $L_p$ John ellipsoid for log-concave function, and establish some inequalities of the $L_p$ John ellipsoid for log-concave function. Finally, the analog of Ball's volume ratio inequality for the $L_p$ John ellipsoid of log-concave function is established.
A classification of $\operatorname{SL}(n)$ and translation covariant Minkowski valuations on log-concave functions is established. The moment vector and the recently introduced level set body of log-concave functions are characterized. Furthermore, analogs of the Euler characteristic and volume are characterized as $\operatorname{SL}(n)$ and translation invariant valuations on log-concave functions.
In this paper, the functional Quermassintegrals of log-concave functions in $\mathbb R^n$ are discussed, we obtain the integral expression of the $i$-th functional mixed Quermassintegrals, which are similar to the integral expression of the $i$-th Quermassintegrals of convex bodies.
On the class of log-concave functions on $\R^n$, endowed with a suitable algebraic structure, we study the first variation of the total mass functional, which corresponds to the volume of convex bodies when restricted to the subclass of characteristic functions. We prove some integral representation formulae for such first variation, which lead to define in a natural way the notion of area measure for a log-concave function. In the same framework, we obtain a functional counterpart of Minkowski first inequality for convex bodies; as corollaries, we derive a functional form of the isoperimetric…
Zhang's reverse affine isoperimetric inequality states that among all convex bodies $K\subseteq\mathbb{R}^n$, the affine invariant quantity $|K|^{n-1}|Π^*(K)|$ (where $Π^*(K)$ denotes the polar projection body of $K$) is minimized if and only if $K$ is a simplex. In this paper we prove an extension of Zhang's inequality in the setting of integrable log-concave functions, characterizing also the equality cases.
In this work we present a new, natural, definition for the mean width of log-concave functions. We show that the new definition coincide with a previous one by B. Klartag and V. Milman, and deduce some properties of the mean width, including an Urysohn type inequality. Finally, we prove a functional version of the finite volume ratio estimate and the low-M* estimate.
In this paper we prove different functional inequalities extending the classical Rogers-Shephard inequalities for convex bodies. The original inequalities provide an optimal relation between the volume of a convex body and the volume of several symmetrizations of the body, such as, its difference body. We characterize the equality cases in all these inequalities. Our method is based on the extension of the notion of a convolution body of two convex sets to any pair of log-concave functions and the study of some geometrical properties of these new sets.
We prove new entropy inequalities for log concave and s-concave functions that strengthen and generalize recently established reverse log Sobolev and Poincare inequalities for such functions. This leads naturally to the concept of f-divergence and, in particular, relative entropy for s-concave and log concave functions. We establish their basic properties, among them the affine invariant valuation property. Applications are given in the theory of convex bodies.
The aim of this paper is to develop a basic framework of the $L_p$ theory for the geometry of log-concave functions, which can be viewed as a functional "lifting" of the $L_p$ Brunn-Minkowski theory for convex bodies. To fulfill this goal, by combining the $L_p$ Asplund sum of log-concave functions for all $p>1$ and the total mass, we obtain a Prékopa-Leindler type inequality and propose a definition for the first variation of the total mass in the $L_p$ setting. Based on these, we further establish an $L_p$ Minkowski type inequality related to the first variation of the total mass and derive …
We study the Restricted Isometry Property of a random matrix $Γ$ with independent isotropic log-concave rows. To this end, we introduce a parameter $Γ_{k,m}$ that controls uniformly the operator norm of sub-matrices with $k$ rows and $m$ columns. This parameter is estimated by means of new tail estimates of order statistics and deviation inequalities for norms of projections of an isotropic log-concave vector.
We establish new tail estimates for order statistics and for the Euclidean norms of projections of an isotropic log-concave random vector. More generally, we prove tail estimates for the norms of projections of sums of independent log-concave random vectors, and uniform versions of these in the form of tail estimates for operator norms of matrices and their sub-matrices in the setting of a log-concave ensemble. This is used to study a quantity $A_{k,m}$ that controls uniformly the operator norm of the sub-matrices with $k$ rows and $m$ columns of a matrix $A$ with independent isotropic log-con…
In this paper we define the Santalo region and the Floating body of a log-concave function. We then study their properties. Our main result is that any relation of Floating body and Santalo region of a convex body is translated to a relation of Floating body and Santalo region of an even log-concave function
We extend the notion of John's ellipsoid to the setting of integrable log-concave functions. This will allow us to define the integral ratio of a log-concave function, which will extend the notion of volume ratio, and we will find the log-concave function maximizing the integral ratio. A reverse functional affine isoperimetric inequality will be given, written in terms of this integral ratio. This can be viewed as a stability version of the functional affine isoperimetric inequality.
Mixed $f$-divergences, a concept from information theory and statistics, measure the difference between multiple pairs of distributions. We introduce them for log concave functions and establish some of their properties. Among them are affine invariant vector entropy inequalities, like new Alexandrov-Fenchel type inequalities and an affine isoperimetric inequality for the vector form of the Kullback Leibler divergence for log concave functions. Special cases of $f$-divergences are mixed $L_λ$-affine surface areas for log concave functions. For those, we establish various affine isoperimetric i…
In this paper we extend some notions, previously defined for log-concave functions, to the larger domain of so-called α-concave functions. We begin with a detailed discussion of support functions - first for log-concave functions, and then for general α-concave functions. We continue by defining mean width, and proving some basic results such as an Urysohn type inequality. Finally, we demonstrate how such geometric results can imply Poincaré type inequalities.
We prove, using optimal transport tools, weighted Poincar'e inequalities for log-concave random vectors satisfying some centering conditions. We recover by this way similar results by Klartag and Barthe-Cordero-Erausquin for log-concave random vectors with symmetries. In addition, we prove that the variance conjecture is true for increments of log-concave martingales.
We discuss interplays between log-concave functions and log-concave sequences. We prove a Bernstein-type theorem, which characterizes the Laplace transform of log-concave measures on the half-line in terms of log-concavity of the alternating Taylor coefficients. We establish concavity inequalities for sequences inspired by the Prékopa-Leindler and the Walkup theorems. One of our main tools is a stochastic variational formula for the Poisson average.
We prove a quantitative dimension-free bound in the Shannon-Stam Entropy inequality for the convolution of two log-concave distributions in dimension d interms of the spectral gap of the density. The method relies on the analysis of the Fisher Information production, which is the second derivative of the Entropy along the (normalized) Heat semi-group. We also discuss consequences of our result in the study of the isotropic constant of log-concave distributions (slicing problem).
We extend the result of Ball and Nguyen on the jump of entropy under convolution for logconcave random vectors. We show that the result holds for any pair of vectors (not necessarily identically distributed) and that a similar inequality holds for the Fisher information, thus providing a quantitative Blachmann-Stam inequality
Affine invariant points and maps for sets were introduced by Grünbaum to study the symmetry structure of convex sets. We extend these notions to a functional setting. The role of symmetry of the set is now taken by evenness of the function. We show that among the examples for affine invariant points are the classical center of gravity of a log-concave function and its Santaló point. We also show that the recently introduced floating functions and the John- and Löwner functions are examples of affine invariant maps. Their centers provide new examples of affine invariant points for log-concave f…
We introduce the notion of Loewner (ellipsoid) function for a log concave function and show that it is an extension of the Loewner ellipsoid for convex bodies. We investigate its duality relation to the recently defined John (ellipsoid) function by Alonso-Gutierrez, Merino, Jimenez and Villa. For convex bodies, John and Loewner ellipsoids are dual to each other. Interestingly, this need not be the case for the John function and the Loewner function.
The Busemann-Petty problem asks whether symmetric convex bodies in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^n$ with smaller central hyperplane sections necessarily have smaller volume. The solution has been completed and the answer is affirmative if $n \le 4$ and negative if $n\ge 5$. In this paper, we investigate the Busemann-Petty problem on entropy of log-concave functions: For even log-concave functions $f$ and $g$ with finite positive integrals in $\mathbb{R}^n$, if the marginal $\int_{\mathbb{R}^n\cap H}f(x)dx$ of $f$ is smaller than the marginal $\int_{\mathbb{R}^n\cap H}g(x)dx$ of $g$ for every…
The paper provides an estimate of the total variation distance between distributions of polynomials defined on a space equipped with a logarithmically concave measure in terms of the $L^2$-distance between these polynomials.
We establish upper bounds for tails of order statistics of isotropic log-concave vectors and apply them to derive a concentration of l_r norms of such vectors.
We study the log-concave measures, their characterization via the Prékopa-Leindler property and also define a subset of it whose elements are called super log-concave measures which have the property of satisfying a logarithmic Sobolev inequality. We give some results about their stability. Certain relations with measure transportation of Monge-Kantorovitch and the Monge-Ampére equation are also indicated with applications.
We develop in this paper an amelioration of the method given by S. Bobkov and M. Ledoux in GAFA (2000). We prove by Prekopa-Leindler Theorem an optimal modified logarithmic Sobolev inequality adapted for all log-concave measure on $\dR^n$. This inequality implies results proved by Bobkov and Ledoux, the Euclidean Logarithmic Sobolev inequality generalized in the last years and it also implies some convex logarithmic Sobolev inequalities for large entropy.
We formulate and discuss a conjecture concerning lower bounds for norms of log-concave vectors, which generalizes the classical Sudakov minoration principle for Gaussian vectors. We show that the conjecture holds for some special classes of log-concave measures and some weaker forms of it are satisfied in the general case. We also present some applications based on chaining techniques.
We review some simple techniques based on monotone mass transport that allow to obtain transport-type inequalities for any log-concave probability measure, and for more general measures as well. We discuss quantitative forms of these inequalities, with application to the Brascamp-Lieb variance inequality.
In this paper, we consider the log-concave ensemble of random matrices, a class of covariance-type matrices $XX^*$ with isotropic log-concave $X$-columns. A main example is the covariance estimator of the uniform measure on isotropic convex body. Non-asymptotic estimates and first order asymptotic limits for the extreme eigenvalues have been obtained in the literature. In this paper, with the recent advancements on log-concave measures \cite{chen, KL22}, we take a step further to locate the eigenvalues with a nearly optimal precision, namely, the spectral rigidity of this ensemble is derived. …
Given a suitably normalized $X\in\mathbb{R}^n$ we observe that the function $θ\mapsto\mathbb{E}|X\cdotθ|$, defined for $θ\in S^{n-1}$, admits surprisingly strong concentration far surpassing what is expected on account of Lévy's isoperimetric inequality. Among the measures to which the above holds are all log-concave measures, for which a solution of the similar problem concerning the third marginal moments $θ\mapsto\mathbb{E} (X\cdot θ)^3$ would imply the hyperplane conjecture.
A concentration property of the functional ${-}\log f(X)$ is demonstrated, when a random vector X has a log-concave density f on $\mathbb{R}^n$. This concentration property implies in particular an extension of the Shannon-McMillan-Breiman strong ergodic theorem to the class of discrete-time stochastic processes with log-concave marginals.
In the study of concentration properties of isotropic log-concave measures, it is often useful to first ensure that the measure has super-Gaussian marginals. To this end, a standard preprocessing step is to convolve with a Gaussian measure, but this has the disadvantage of destroying small-ball information. We propose an alternative preprocessing step for making the measure seem super-Gaussian, at least up to reasonably high moments, which does not suffer from this caveat: namely, convolving the measure with a random orthogonal image of itself. As an application of this "inner-thickening", we …
We show that Shannon's entropy--power inequality admits a strengthened version in the case in which the densities are log-concave. In such a case, in fact, one can extend the Blachman--Stam argument to obtain a sharp inequality for the second derivative of Shannon's entropy functional with respect to the heat semigroup.
We discuss situations where perturbing a probability measure on $\mathbb{R}^n$ does not deteriorate its Poincaré constant by much. A particular example is the symmetric exponential measure in $\mathbb{R}^n$, even log-concave perturbations of which have Poincaré constants that grow at most logarithmically with the dimension. This leads to estimates for the Poincaré constants of $(n/2)$-dimensional sections of the unit ball of $\ell_p^n$ for $1 \leq p \leq 2$, which are optimal up to logarithmic factors. We also consider symmetry properties of the eigenspace of the Laplace-type operator associat…
An important theme in recent work in asymptotic geometric analysis is that many classical implications between different types of geometric or functional inequalities can be reversed in the presence of convexity assumptions. In this note, we explore the extent to which different notions of distance between probability measures are comparable for log-concave distributions. Our results imply that weak convergence of isotropic log-concave distributions is equivalent to convergence in total variation, and is further equivalent to convergence in relative entropy when the limit measure is Gaussian.
We establish quantitative stability results for the entropy power inequality (EPI). Specifically, we show that if uniformly log-concave densities nearly saturate the EPI, then they must be close to Gaussian densities in the quadratic Wasserstein distance. Further, if one of the densities is log-concave and the other is Gaussian, then the deficit in the EPI can be controlled in terms of the $L^1$-Wasserstein distance. As a counterpoint, an example shows that the EPI can be unstable with respect to the quadratic Wasserstein distance when densities are uniformly log-concave on sets of measure arb…
Log-concave distributions include some important distributions such as normal distribution, exponential distribution and so on. In this note, we show inequalities between two Lp-norms for log-concave distributions on the Euclidean space. These inequalities are the generalizations of the upper and lower bound of the differential entropy and are also interpreted as a kind of expansion of the inequality between two Lp-norms on the measurable set with finite measure.
An elementary proof is provided of sharp bounds for the varentropy of random vectors with log-concave densities, as well as for deviations of the information content from its mean. These bounds significantly improve on the bounds obtained by Bobkov and Madiman ({\it Ann. Probab.}, 39(4):1528--1543, 2011).
