Young giant planets and brown dwarf companions emit near-infrared radiation that can be linearly polarized up to several percent. This polarization can reveal the presence of a circumsubstellar accretion disk, rotation-induced oblateness of the atmosphere, or an inhomogeneous distribution of atmospheric dust clouds. We measured the near-infrared linear polarization of 20 known directly imaged exoplanets and brown dwarf companions with the high-contrast imager SPHERE-IRDIS at the VLT. We reduced the data using the IRDAP pipeline to correct for the instrumental polarization and crosstalk with an absolute polarimetric accuracy <0.1% in the degree of polarization. We report the first detection of polarization originating from substellar companions, with a polarization of several tenths of a percent for DH Tau B and GSC 6214-210 B in H-band. By comparing the measured polarization with that of nearby stars, we find that the polarization is unlikely to be caused by interstellar dust. Because the companions have previously measured hydrogen emission lines and red colors, the polarization most likely originates from circumsubstellar disks. Through radiative transfer modeling, we constrain the position angles of the disks and find that the disks must have high inclinations. The presence of these disks as well as the misalignment of the disk of DH Tau B with the disk around its primary star suggest in situ formation of the companions. For the 18 other companions, we do not detect significant polarization and place subpercent upper limits on their degree of polarization. These non-detections may indicate the absence of circumsubstellar disks, a slow rotation rate of young companions, the upper atmospheres containing primarily submicron-sized dust grains, and/or limited cloud inhomogeneity. Finally, we present images of the circumstellar disks of DH Tau, GQ Lup, PDS 70, Beta Pic, and HD 106906.
Context. Polarimetric imaging is one of the most effective techniques for high-contrast imaging and characterization of protoplanetary disks, and has the potential to be instrumental in characterizing exoplanets. VLT/SPHERE contains the InfraRed Dual-band Imager and Spectrograph (IRDIS) with a dual-beam polarimetric imaging (DPI) mode, which offers the capability to obtain linear polarization images at high contrast and resolution. Aims. We aim to provide an overview of IRDIS/DPI and study its optical design to improve observing strategies and data reduction. Methods. For H-band observations o…
We present the first part of our DARTTS-S (Disks ARound TTauri Stars with SPHERE) survey: Observations of 8 TTauri stars which were selected based on their strong (sub-)mm excesses using SPHERE / IRDIS polarimetric differential imaging (PDI) in the J and H bands. All observations successfully detect the disks, which appear vastly different in size, from $\approx$80 au in scattered light to $>$400 au, and display total polarized disk fluxes between 0.06% and 0.89% of the stellar flux. For five of these disks, we are able to determine the three-dimensional structure and the flaring of the disk s…
Context. Circumstellar disks and self-luminous giant exoplanets or companion brown dwarfs can be characterized through direct-imaging polarimetry at near-infrared wavelengths. SPHERE/IRDIS at the Very Large Telescope has the capabilities to perform such measurements, but uncalibrated instrumental polarization effects limit the attainable polarimetric accuracy. Aims. We aim to characterize and correct the instrumental polarization effects of the complete optical system, i.e. the telescope and SPHERE/IRDIS. Methods. We create a detailed Mueller matrix model in the broadband filters Y-, J-, H- an…
Young giant exoplanets emit infrared radiation that can be linearly polarized up to several percent. This linear polarization can trace: 1) the presence of atmospheric cloud and haze layers, 2) spatial structure, e.g. cloud bands and rotational flattening, 3) the spin axis orientation and 4) particle sizes and cloud top pressure. We introduce a novel high-contrast imaging scheme that combines angular differential imaging (ADI) and accurate near-infrared polarimetry to characterize self-luminous giant exoplanets. We implemented this technique at VLT/SPHERE-IRDIS and developed the corresponding …
The new planet finder for the Very Large Telescope (VLT), the Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet REsearch (SPHERE), just had its first light in Paranal. A dedicated instrument for the direct detection of planets, SPHERE, is composed of a polametric camera in visible light, the Zurich IMager POLarimeter (ZIMPOL), and two near-infrared sub-systems: the Infra-Red Dual-beam Imager and Spectrograph (IRDIS), a multi-purpose camera for imaging, polarimetry, and long-slit spectroscopy, and the integral field spectrograph (IFS), an integral field spectrograph. We present the results obtained …
Context. Debris disks have commonly been studied around intermediate-mass stars. Their intense radiation fields are believed to efficiently remove the small dust grains that are constantly replenished by collisions. For lower-mass stars, in particular M-stars, the dust removal mechanism needs to be further investigated given the much weaker radiation field produced by these objects. Aims. We present new polarimetric observations of the nearly edge-on disk around the pre-main sequence M-type star GSC 07396-00759, taken with VLT/SPHERE IRDIS, with the aim to better understand the morphology of t…
We present new ALMA Band 7 observations of the edge-on debris disc around the M1V star GSC 07396-00759. At ~20 Myr old and in the beta Pictoris Moving Group along with AU Mic, GSC 07396-00759 joins it in the handful of low mass M-dwarf discs to be resolved in the sub-mm. With previous VLT/SPHERE scattered light observations we present a multi-wavelength view of the dust distribution within the system under the effects of stellar wind forces. We find the mm dust grains to be well described by a Gaussian torus at 70 au with a FWHM of 48 au and we do not detect the presence of CO in the system. O…
The protoplanetary disk around the F-type star HD 135344B (SAO 206462) is in a transition stage and shows many intriguing structures both in scattered light and thermal (sub-)millimeter emission which are possibly related to planet formation processes. We study the morphology and surface brightness of the disk in scattered light to gain insight into the innermost disk regions, the formation of protoplanets, planet-disk interactions traced in the surface and midplane layers, and the dust grain properties of the disk surface. We have carried out high-contrast polarimetric differential imaging (P…
We performed observations of the Sco-Cen F star HD 117214 aiming at a search for planetary companions and the characterization of the debris disk structure. HD 117214 was observed with the SPHERE subsystems IRDIS, IFS and ZIMPOL at optical and near-IR wavelengths using angular and polarimetric differential imaging techniques. This provided the first images of scattered light from the debris disk with a spatial resolution reaching 25 mas and an inner working angle $< 0.1''$. With the observations with IRDIS and IFS we derive detection limits for substellar companions. The geometrical parameters…
HR8799 is orbited by at least four giant planets, making it a prime target for the recently commissioned Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet REsearch (VLT/SPHERE). As such, it was observed on five consecutive nights during the SPHERE science verification in December 2014. We aim to take full advantage of the SPHERE capabilities to derive accurate astrometric measurements based on H-band images acquired with the Infra-Red Dual-band Imaging and Spectroscopy (IRDIS) subsystem, and to explore the ultimate astrometric performance of SPHERE in this observing mode. We also aim to present a d…
Young self-luminous giant exoplanets are expected to be oblate in shape owing to the high rotational speeds observed for some objects. Similar to the case of brown dwarfs, the thermal emission from these planets should be polarized by scatterings of molecules and condensate cloud particles, and the rotation-induced asymmetry of the planet's disk would yield to net non-zero detectable polarization. Considering an anisotropic atmosphere, we present here a three-dimensional approach to estimate the disk-averaged polarization that arises due to the oblateness of the planets. We solve the multiple-…
The transition disk around the T Tauri star T Cha possesses a large gap, making it a prime target for high-resolution imaging in the context of planet formation. We aim to find signs of disk evolutionary processes by studying the disk geometry and the dust grain properties at its surface, and to search for companion candidates. We analyze a set of VLT/SPHERE data at near-infrared and optical wavelengths. We performed polarimetric imaging of T Cha with IRDIS (1.6 $μ$m) and ZIMPOL (0.5-0.9 $μ$m), and obtained intensity images from IRDIS dual-band imaging with simultaneous spectro-imaging with IF…
Measuring the orbits of directly-imaged exoplanets requires precise astrometry at the milliarcsec level over long periods of time due to their wide separation to the stars ($\gtrsim$10 au) and long orbital period ($\gtrsim$20 yr). To reach this challenging goal, a specific strategy was implemented for the instrument Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet REsearch (SPHERE), the first dedicated exoplanet imaging instrument at the Very Large Telescope of the European Southern Observatory (ESO). A key part of this strategy relies on the astrometric stability of the instrument over time. We m…
Transition disks are considered sites of ongoing planet formation, and their dust and gas distributions could be signposts of embedded planets. The transition disk around the T Tauri star RY Lup has an inner dust cavity and displays a strong silicate emission feature. Using high-resolution imaging we study the disk geometry, including non-axisymmetric features, and its surface dust grain, to gain a better understanding of the disk evolutionary process. Moreover, we search for companion candidates, possibly connected to the disk. We obtained high-contrast and high angular resolution data in the…
To understand the formation of planetary systems, one needs to understand the initial conditions of planet formation, i.e. the young gas-rich planet forming disks. Spatially resolved high-contrast observations are of particular interest, since substructures in disks, linked to planet formation, can be detected and close companions or even planets in formation embedded in the disk can be revealed. In this study we present the first result of the DESTINYS survey (Disk Evolution Study Through Imaging of Nearby Young Stars). DESTINYS is an ESO/SPHERE large program that aims at studying disk evolut…
The Young Suns Exoplanet Survey (YSES) consists of a homogeneous sample of 70 young, solar-mass stars located in the Lower Centaurus-Crux subgroup of the Scorpius-Centaurus association with an average age of $15\pm3\,$Myr. We report the detection of a co-moving companion around the K3IV star TYC 8998-760-1 (2MASSJ13251211-6456207) that is located at a distance of $94.6\pm0.3\,$pc using SPHERE/IRDIS on the VLT. Spectroscopic observations with VLT/X-SHOOTER constrain the mass of the star to $1.00\pm0.02\,M_{\odot}$ and an age of $16.7\pm1.4\,$Myr. The companion TYC 8998-760-1 b is detected at a …
We analyze the highest-resolution millimeter continuum and near-infrared (NIR) scattered-light images presented to date of the circumbinary disk orbiting V4046 Sgr, a ~20 Myr old actively accreting, close binary T Tauri star system located a mere 72.4 pc from Earth. We observed the disk with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) at 870-micron during Cycle 4, and we analyze these data in conjunction with archival NIR (H band) polarimetric images obtained with SPHERE/IRDIS on the ESO Very Large Telescope. At 0.3'' (20 au) resolution, the 870-micron image reveals a marginally re…
We present high-precision photometry and polarimetry for the protoplanetary disk around HD142527, with a focus on determining the light scattering parameters of the dust. We re-reduced polarimetric differential imaging data of HD142527 in the VBB (735 nm) and H-band (1625 nm) from the ZIMPOL and IRDIS subinstruments of SPHERE/VLT. With polarimetry and photometry based on reference star differential imaging, we were able to measure the linearly polarized intensity and the total intensity of the light scattered by the circumstellar disk with high precision. We used simple Monte Carlo simulations…
The large cavities observed in the dust and gas distributions of transition disks may be explained by planet-disk interactions. At ~145 pc, 2MASS J16042165-2130284 (J1604) is a 5-12 Myr old transitional disk with different gap sizes in the mm- and $μ$m-sized dust distributions (outer edges at ~79 and at ~63 au, respectively). Its $^{12}$CO emission shows a ~30 au cavity. This radial structure suggests that giant planets are sculpting this disk. We aim to constrain the masses and locations of plausible giant planets around J1604. We observed J1604 with the Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exo…
As part of our on-going survey we have carried out high-contrast imaging with VLT/SPHERE/IRDIS to obtain polarized and total intensity images of the young ($11^{+16}_{-7}$Myr old) K3IV star Wray 15-788 within the Lower Centaurus Crux subgroup of Sco-Cen. For the total intensity images, we remove the stellar halo by an approach based on reference star differential imaging in combination with principal component analysis. Both total intensity and polarimetric data resolve a disk around Wray 15-788. Modeling of the stellar spectral energy distribution suggests that this is a protoplanetary disk a…
EX Lup is a well-studied T Tauri star that represents the prototype of young eruptive stars EXors. In this paper we analyze new adaptive optics imaging and spectroscopic observations of EX Lup and its circumstellar environment in near-infrared in its quiescent phase. We observed EX Lup with the high contrast imager SPHERE/IRDIS in the dual-beam polarimetric imaging mode to resolve the circumstellar environment in near-infrared scattered light. We complemented these data with earlier SINFONI spectroscopy. We resolve for the first time in scattered light a compact feature around EX Lup azimuthal…

Observations of circumstellar environments to look for the direct signal of exoplanets and the scattered light from disks has significant instrumental implications. In the past 15 years, major developments in adaptive optics, coronagraphy, optical manufacturing, wavefront sensing and data processing, together with a consistent global system analysis have enabled a new generation of high-contrast imagers and spectrographs on large ground-based telescopes with much better performance. One of the most productive is the Spectro-Polarimetic High contrast imager for Exoplanets REsearch (SPHERE) desi…
