This study provides an abstract framework to analyze mixed formulations in viscoelasticity, in the classic saddle point form. Standard hypothesis for mixed methods are adapted to the Volterra type equations in order to obtain stability of the proposed problem. Error estimates are derived for suitable finite element spaces. We apply the developed theory to a bending moment formulation for a linear viscoelastic Timoshenko beam and for the Laplace operator with memory terms. For both problems we report numerical results to asses the performance of the methods.
We introduce and analyze a stress-based formulation for Zener's model in linear viscoelasticity. The method is aimed to tackle efficiently heterogeneous materials that admit purely elastic and viscoelastic parts in their composition. We write the mixed variational formulation of the problem in terms of a class of tensorial wave equation and obtain an energy estimate that guaranties the well-posedness of the problem through a standard Galerkin procedure. We propose and analyze mixed continuous and discontinuous Galerkin space discretizations of the problem and derive optimal error bounds for ea…
In this work we propose and analyze an abstract parameter dependent model written as a mixed variational formulation based on Volterra integrals of second kind. For the analysis, we consider a suitable adaptation to the classic mixed theory in the Volterra equations setting, and prove the well posedness of the resulting mixed viscoelastic formulation. Error estimates are derived, using the available results for Volterra equations, where all the estimates are independent of the perturbation parameter. We consider an application of the developed theory in a viscoelastic Timoshenko beam, and repo…
Semi-discrete and fully discrete mixed finite element methods are considered for Maxwell-model-based problems of wave propagation in linear viscoelastic solid. This mixed finite element framework allows the use of a large class of existing mixed conforming finite elements for elasticity in the spatial discretization. In the fully discrete scheme, a Crank-Nicolson scheme is adopted for the approximation of the temporal derivatives of stress and velocity variables. Error estimates of the semi-discrete and fully discrete schemes, as well as an unconditional stability result for the fully discrete…
We introduce and analyze a new mixed finite element method with reduced symmetry for the standard linear model in viscoelasticity. Following a previous approach employed for linear elastodynamics, the present problem is formulated as a second-order hyperbolic partial differential equation in which, after using the motion equation to eliminate the displacement unknown, the stress tensor remains as the main variable to be found. The resulting variational formulation is shown to be well-posed, and a class of $\text{H}(\text{div})$-conforming semi-discrete schemes is proved to be convergent. Then,…

In this paper, we propose and analyze an abstract stabilized mixed finite element framework that can be applied to nonlinear incompressible elasticity problems. In the abstract stabilized framework, we prove that any mixed finite element method that satisfies the discrete inf-sup condition can be modified so that it is stable and optimal convergent as long as the mixed continuous problem is stable. Furthermore, we apply the abstract stabilized framework to nonlinear incompressible elasticity problems and present numerical experiments to verify the theoretical results.
Mixed-dimensional elliptic equations exhibiting a hierarchical structure are commonly used to model problems with high aspect ratio inclusions, such as flow in fractured porous media. We derive general abstract estimates based on the theory of functional a posteriori error estimates, for which guaranteed upper bounds for the primal and dual variables and two-sided bounds for the primal-dual pair are obtained. We improve on the abstract results obtained with the functional approach by proposing four different ways of estimating the residual errors based on the extent the approximate solution ha…
The aim of this work is to show an abstract framework to analyze the numerical approximation for a family of linear degenerate parabolic mixed equations by using a finite element method in space and a Backward-Euler scheme in time. We consider sufficient conditions to prove that the fully-discrete problem has a unique solution and prove quasi-optimal error estimates for the approximation. Furthermore, we show that mixed finite element formulations arising from dynamics fluids (time-dependent Stokes problem) and from electromagnetic applications (eddy current models), can be analyzed as applica…
We study the mixed formulation of the abstract Hodge Laplacian on axisymmetric domains with general data through Fourer-finite-element-methods in weighted functions spaces. Closed Hilbert complexes and commuting projectors are used through a family of finite element spaces recently introduced for general axisymmetric problems. In order to get stability results and error estimates for the discrete mixed formulation, we construct commuting projectors that can be applied to functions with low regularity.
In this paper we prove a new abstract stability result for perturbed saddle-point problems based on a norm fitting technique. We derive the stability condition according to Babuska's theory from a small inf-sup condition, similar to the famous Ladyzhenskaya-Babuska-Brezzi (LBB) condition, and the other standard assumptions in Brezzi's theory, in a combined abstract norm. The construction suggests to form the latter from individual fitted norms that are composed from proper seminorms. This abstract framework not only allows for simpler (shorter) proofs of many stability results but also guides …
Parameter identification problems for partial differential equations are an important subclass of inverse problems. The parameter-to-state map, which maps the parameter of interest to the respective solution of the PDE or state of the system, plays the central role in the (usually nonlinear) forward operator. Consequently, one is interested in well-definedness and further analytic properties such as continuity and differentiability of this operator w.r.t. the parameter in order to make sure that techniques from inverse problems theory may be successfully applied to solve the inverse problem. I…
