The analyticity properties of the scattering amplitude for a massive scalar field is reviewed in this article where the spacetime geometry is $R^{3,1}\otimes S^1$ i.e. one spatial dimension is compact. Khuri investigated the analyticity of scattering amplitude in a nonrelativitstic potential model in three dimensions with an additional compact dimension. He showed that, under certain circumstances, the forward amplitude is nonanalytic. He argued that in high energy scattering if such a behaviour persists it would be in conflicts with the established results of quantum field theory and LHC might observe such behaviors. We envisage a real scalar massive field in flat Minkowski spacetime in five dimensions. The Kaluza-Klein (KK) compactification is implemented on a circle. The resulting four dimensional manifold is $R^{3,1}\otimes S^1$. The LSZ formalism is adopted to study the analyticity of the scattering amplitude. The nonforward dispersion relation is proved. In addition the Jin-Martin bound and an analog of the Froissart-Martin bound are proved. A novel proposal is presented to look for evidence of the large-radius-compactification scenario. A seemingly violation of Froissart-Martin bound at LHC energy might hint that an extra dimension might be decompactified. However, we find no evidence for violation of the bound in our analysis.
We consider a massive, neutral, scalar field theory of mass $m_0$ in a five dimensional flat spacetime. Subsequently, one spatial dimension is compactified on a circle, $S^1$, ofradius $R$. The resulting theory is defined in the manifold, $R^{3,1}\otimes S^1$. The mass spectrum is a state of lowest mass, $m_0$, and a tower of massive Kaluza-Klein states. The analyticity property of the elastic scattering amplitude is investigated in the Lehmann-Symanzik-Zimmermann (LSZ) formulation of this theory. In the context of nonrelativistic potential scattering, for the $R^3\otimes S^1$ spatial geometry…
In these lectures we provide a basic introduction into the topic of dispersion relation and analyticity. The properties of 2-point functions are discussed in some detail from the viewpoint of the Källén-Lehmann and general dispersion relations. The Weinberg sum rules figure as an application. The analytic structure of higher point functions in perturbation theory are analysed through the Landau equations and the Cutkosky rules.
This paper discusses the locality and analyticity of the crossing symmetric dispersion relation (CSDR). Imposing locality constraints on the CSDR gives rise to a local and fully crossing symmetric expansion of scattering amplitudes, dubbed as Feynman block expansion. A general formula is provided for the contact terms that emerge from the expansion. The analyticity domain of the expansion is also derived analogously to the Lehmann-Martin ellipse. Our observation of type-II super-string tree amplitude suggests that the Feynman block expansion has a bigger analyticity domain and better convergen…
The properties of the high energy behavior of the scattering amplitude of massive, neutral and spinless particles in higher dimensional field theories are investigated. The axiomatic formulation of Lehmann, Symanzik and Zimmermann is adopted. The analyticity properties of the causal, the retarded and the advanced functions associated with the four point elastic amplitudes are studied. The analog of the Lehmann-Jost-Dyson representation is obtained in higher dimensional field theories. The generalized J-L-D representation is utilized to derive the t-plane analyticity property of the amplitude. …
The analyticity properties of the scattering amplitude in the nonforward direction are investigated for a field theory in the manifold $\mathbb{R}^{3,1}\times S^1$. A scalar field theory of mass $m_0$ is considered in $D = 5$ Minkowski space to start with. Subsequently, one spatial dimension is compactified to a circle. The mass spectrum of the resulting theory is: (a) a massive scalar of mass, $m_0$, same as the original five dimensional theory and (b) a tower of massive Kaluza-Klein states. We derive nonforward dispersion relations for scattering of the excited Kaluza-Klein states in the Leh…
We study the analytic properties of tree-level wavefunction coefficients in quasi-de Sitter space. We focus on theories which spontaneously break dS boost symmetries and can produce significant non-Gaussianities. The corresponding inflationary correlators are (approximately) scale invariant, but are not invariant under the full conformal group. We derive cutting rules and dispersion formulas for the late-time wavefunction coefficients by using factorization and analyticity properties of the dS bulk-to-bulk propagator. This gives a unitarity method which is valid at tree-level for general $n$-p…

We argue that nonperturbative CFT correlation functions admit a Mellin amplitude representation. Perturbative Mellin representation readily follows. We discuss the main properties of nonperturbative CFT Mellin amplitudes: subtractions, analyticity, unitarity, Polyakov conditions and polynomial boundedness at infinity. Mellin amplitudes are particularly simple for large N CFTs and 2D rational CFTs. We discuss these examples to illustrate our general discussion. We consider subtracted dispersion relations for Mellin amplitudes and use them to derive bootstrap bounds on CFTs. We combine crossing,…
We investigate the convergence of relativistic hydrodynamics in charged fluids, within the framework of holography. On the one hand, we consider the analyticity properties of the dispersion relations of the hydrodynamic modes on the complex frequency and momentum plane and on the other hand, we perform a perturbative expansion of the dispersion relations in small momenta to a very high order. We see that the locations of the branch points extracted using the first approach are in good quantitative agreement with the radius of convergence extracted perturbatively. We see that for different valu…
We consider positivity constraints applicable to the Effective Field Theory (EFT) of gravity in arbitrary dimensions. By considering scattering of indefinite initial and final states, we highlight the existence of a gravitational scattering amplitude for which full crossing symmetry is manifest and utilize the recently developed crossing symmetric dispersion relations to derive compact non-linear bounds. We show that the null constraints built into these dispersion relations lead to a finite energy sum rule for gravity which may be extended to a one-parameter family of continuous moment sum ru…
We use Mellin space dispersion relations together with Polyakov conditions to derive a family of sum rules for Conformal Field Theories (CFTs). The defining property of these sum rules is suppression of the contribution of the double twist operators. Firstly, we apply these sum rules to the Wilson-Fisher model in $d=4-ε$ dimensions. We re-derive many of the known results to order $ε^4$ and we make new predictions. No assumption of analyticity down to spin $0$ was made. Secondly, we study holographic CFTs. We use dispersive sum rules to obtain tree-level and one-loop anomalous dimensions. Final…
We study momentum space dispersion formulas in general QFTs and their applications for CFT correlation functions. We show, using two independent methods, that QFT dispersion formulas can be written in terms of causal commutators. The first derivation uses analyticity properties of retarded correlators in momentum space. The second derivation uses the largest time equation and the defining properties of the time-ordered product. At four points we show that the momentum space QFT dispersion formula depends on the same causal double-commutators as the CFT dispersion formula. At $n$-points, the QF…
In this note, we study the connections between infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV) behaviors of scattering amplitudes of massless channels by exploiting dispersion relations and positivity bounds. Given forward scattering amplitudes, which scale as $\mathcal{A}(s)\sim s^M$ in the IR ($s\to0$) and could be embedded into UV completions satisfying unitarity, analyticity, crossing symmetry and polynomial boundedness $|\mathcal{A}(s)|< c\, |s|^N$ ($|s|\to\infty$), with $M$ and $N$ integers, we show that the inequality $2\ceil*{\frac{N}{2}}\ge M \ge \ceil*{\frac{N}{2}}$ must hold, where $\ceil*{x}$ i…
We prove a lower bound for the modulus of the amplitude for a two-body process at large scattering angle. This is based on the interplay of the analyticity of the amplitude and the positivity properties of its absorptive part. The assumptions are minimal, namely those of local quantum field theory (in the case when dispersion relations hold). In Appendix A, lower bounds for the forward particle-particle and particle-antiparticle amplitudes are obtained. This is of independent interest.
We place theoretical constraints on the leading deviations to four-fermion standard model interactions. Invoking S-matrix analyticity and partial wave unitarity, we develop new dispersion relations that yield either spin-dependent sum rules on dimension-six fermionic operators or information about the amplitude's behavior at large momentum. The pattern of SMEFT inequalities we find for theories obeying certain large-momentum constraints enables a diagnosis of properties of emerging new physics. These relations form a bridge between new physics searches: discovery of flavor-violating $τ$ decays…

We derive new constraints on massive gravity from unitarity and analyticity of scattering amplitudes. Our results apply to a general effective theory defined by Einstein gravity plus the leading soft diffeomorphism-breaking corrections. We calculate scattering amplitudes for all combinations of tensor, vector, and scalar polarizations. The high-energy behavior of these amplitudes prescribes a specific choice of couplings that ameliorates the ultraviolet cutoff, in agreement with existing literature. We then derive consistency conditions from analytic dispersion relations, which dictate positiv…
We derive bounds on couplings in the standard model effective field theory (SMEFT) as a consequence of causality and the analytic structure of scattering amplitudes. In the SMEFT, there are 64 independent operators at mass dimension eight that are quartic in bosons (either Higgs or gauge fields) and that contain four derivatives and/or field strengths, including both CP-conserving and CP-violating operators. Using analytic dispersion relation arguments for two-to-two bosonic scattering amplitudes, we derive 27 independent bounds on the sign or magnitude of the couplings. We show that these bou…
Univalent functions are complex, analytic (holomorphic) and injective functions that have been widely discussed in complex analysis. It was recently proposed that the stringent constraints that univalence imposes on the growth of functions combined with sufficient analyticity conditions could be used to derive rigorous lower and upper bounds on hydrodynamic dispersion relation, i.e., on all terms appearing in their convergent series representations. The results are exact bounds on physical quantities such as the diffusivity and the speed of sound. The purpose of this paper is to further explor…
