The fundamental difference between accretion around black holes and neutron stars is the inner boundary condition, which affects the behavior of matter very close to the compact objects. This leads to formation of additional shocks and boundary layers for neutron stars. Previous studies on the formation of such boundary layers focused on Keplerian flows that reached the surface of the star, either directly or through the formation of a transition layer. However, behavior of sub-Keplerian matter near the surface of a neutron star has not been studied in detail. Here, we study the effect of viscosity, in presence of cooling, on the sub-Keplerian flows around neutron stars, using Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics. Our time-dependent study shows that multiple shocks, transition and boundary layers form in such type of accretion, when viscosity is significant, and one or more layers are absent when the viscosity is moderate. These flows are particularly of interest for the wind dominated systems such as Cir X-1. We also report the formation of a generalized flow configuration, Two-Component Advective Flow, for the first time.
We explore spectral properties of a Two-Component Advective Flow (TCAF) around a neutron star. We compute the effects of thermal Comptonization of soft photons emitted from a Keplerian disc and the boundary layer of the neutron star by the post-shock region of a sub-Keplerian flow, formed due to the centrifugal barrier. The shock location $X_s$ is also the inner edge of the Keplerian disc. We compute a series of realistic spectra assuming a set of electron temperatures of the post-shock region $T_{CE}$, the temperature of the normal boundary layer (NBOL) $T_{NS}$ of the neutron star and the sh…
Numerous studies on hydrodynamics of the Keplerian as well as the sub-Keplerian accretion disc around a compact object (e.g., white dwarf (WD), neutron star (NS), or a black hole (BH)) attempted to explain the observed UV, soft and hard X-ray spectra. Although, when the compact object (e.g., a WD or an NS) has a finite surface, its rapid rotation, the stellar magnetic field could cause deformation of the spherical symmetry. Earlier studies for Keplerian disc showed that a deviation from the spherical symmetry of the compact object could affect the observed light curve and spectra at high frequ…
We studied the general advective accretion solutions around the Kerr black hole (BH) with investigating two types of inflow gases at the outer accretion boundary (AB). We classified these two types of gases as a \cm and a \hm inflow gas at the outer AB on the basis of their temperatures and solutions. We found that the \hm gas is more efficient for angular momentum transportation around the outer AB than the \cm gas. The \hm gas can give global multiple \cite[popular as shock solution][]{c89} or single sonic point solutions and the \cm can give smooth global solution \cite[popular as ADAF][]{n…
Ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs) have been puzzling us with a debate whether they consist of an intermediate mass black hole or super-Eddington accretion by a stellar mass black hole. Here we suggest that in the presence of large scale strong magnetic fields and non-negligible vertical motion, the luminosity of ULXs, particularly in their hard states, can be explained with sub-Eddington accretion by stellar mass black holes. In this framework of 2.5D magnetized advective accretion flows, magnetic tension plays the role of transporting matter (equivalent to viscous shear via turbulent viscos…
In order to explain unusually high luminosity and spectral nature of ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs), some of the underlying black holes are argued to be of intermediate mass, between several tens to million solar masses. Indeed, there is a long standing question of missing mass of intermediate range of black holes. However, as some ULXs are argued to be neutron stars too, often their unusual high luminosity is argued by super-Eddington accretions. Nevertheless, all the models are based on non-magnetized or weakly magnetized accretion. There are, however, evidences that magnetic fields in …
We examine the properties of the viscous dissipative accretion flow around rotating black holes in presence of mass loss. Considering thin disc approximation, we self-consistently calculate the inflow-outflow solutions and observe that the mass outflow rates decreases with the increase of viscosity parameter ($α$). Further, we carry out the model calculation of Quasi-periodic Oscillation frequency ($ν_{\rm QPO}$) that is frequently observed in black hole sources and observe that $ν^{\rm max}_{\rm QPO}$ increases with the increase of black hole spin ($a_k$). Then, we employ our model in order t…
We study the two-temperature magnetized advective accretion flow around the Kerr black holes. During accretion, ions are heated up due to viscous dissipation, and when Coulomb coupling becomes effective, they transfer a part of their energy to the electrons. On the contrary, electrons lose energy due to various radiative cooling processes, namely bremsstrahlung, synchrotron, and Comtonization processes, respectively. To account for the magnetic contribution inside the disc, we consider the toroidal magnetic fields which are assumed to be dominant over other components. Moreover, we adopt the r…
Magnetic fields advected along with low angular momentum accretion flows predominantly become toroidal due to the strong azimuthal velocity close to a black hole. We study self-consistently the movements of these flux tubes inside an advective disc and how they dynamically influence the flow. We find that the centrifugal barrier slows down the radial motion of the flux tubes. In this case, the large magnetic flux tubes with a significant drag force escape along the vertical axis due to buoyancy. Magnetic pressure rises close to the black hole and together with the centrifugal force, it combats…
We solved analytically viscous two-dimensional (2D) fluid equations for accretion and outflows in spherical polar coordinates ($r, θ, ϕ$) and obtained explicitly flow variables in $r-$ and $θ-$directions around black holes (BHs). We investigated global transonic advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF) solutions in $r-$direction on an equatorial plane with using Paczyński-Wiita potential. We used radial flow variables of ADAFs with symmetric conditions on the equatorial plane, as initial values for integration in $θ-$direction. In the study of 2D disk structure, we used two-azimuthal componen…
We address the role of large scale magnetic stress in the angular momentum transport, as well as the formation of different kinds of magnetic barrier in geometrically thick, optically thin, vertically averaged 1.5-dimensional advective accretion flows around black holes. The externally generated magnetic fields are captured by the accretion process from the environment, say, companion stars or interstellar medium. This field becomes dynamically dominant near the event horizon of a black hole due to continuous advection of the magnetic flux. In such magnetically dominated accretion flows, the a…
The $Fermi$ blazar observations show a strong correlation between $γ$-ray luminosities and spectral indices. BL Lac objects are less luminous with harder spectra than flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs). Interestingly FSRQs are evident to exhibit a Keplerian disc component along with a powerful jet. We compute the jet intrinsic luminosities by beaming corrections determined by different cooling mechanisms. Observed $γ$-ray luminosities and spectroscopic measurements of broad emission lines suggest a correlation of the accretion disc luminosity with jet intrinsic luminosity. Also, theoretical a…
Two Component Advective Flow (TCAF) successfully explains the spectral and tem- poral properties of outbursting or persistent sources. Images of static TCAF with Compton cloud or CENtrifugal pressure supported Boundary Layer (CENBOL) due to gravitational bending of photons have been studied before. In this paper, we study time dependent images of advective flows around a Schwarzschild black hole which include cooling effects due to Comptonization of soft photons from a Keplerian disks well as the self-consistently produced jets and outflows. We show the overall image of the disk-jet system aft…
Recent studies show that accretion flows around weakly magnetic Neutron Stars undergo multiple shocks, before reaching the surface of the star, which contribute to the spectral and timing variabilities observed in the X-Rays. Here, we report, for the first time, the spectral properties of a unified model of shocked accretion flows around Neutron Stars, based on the Two-Component Advective Flow paradigm. We compare our theoretical results with the X-Ray spectral features of Z and Atoll sources, across different states. We also fit RXTE/PCA spectra of Sco X-1 and 4U 1705-44 to show the potential…

Two temperature accretion around rotating black holes: Description of general advective flow paradigm in presence of various cooling processes to explain low to high luminous sources
We carry out the first robust numerical simulation of accretion flows on a weakly magnetized neutron star using Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH). We follow the Two-Component Advective Flow (TCAF) paradigm for black holes, and focus only on the advective component for the case of a neutron star. This low viscosity sub-Keplerian flow will create a normal boundary layer (or, NBOL) right on the star surface in addition to the centrifugal pressure supported boundary layer (or, CENBOL) present in a black hole accretion. These density jumps could give rise to standing or oscillating shock fronts…
In this chapter, we present a brief and non-exhaustive review of the developments of theoretical models for accretion flows around neutron stars. A somewhat chronological summary of crucial observations and modelling of timing and spectral properties are given in sections 2 and 3. In section 4, we argue why and how the Two-Component Advective Flow (TCAF) solution can be applied to the cases of neutron stars when suitable modifications are made for the NSs. We showcase some of our findings from Monte Carlo and Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamic simulations which further strengthens the points raise…
We discuss the importance of large scale strong magnetic field in the removal of angular momentum outward, as well as the possible origin of different kinds of magnetic barrier in advective, geometrically thick, sub-Keplerian accretion flows around black holes. The origin of this large scale strong magnetic field near the event horizon is due to the advection of the magnetic flux by the accreting gas from the environment, say, the interstellar medium or a companion star, because of flux freezing. In this simplest vertically averaged, 1.5-dimensional disc model, we choose the maximum upper limi…
We present a joint spectral analysis of ROSAT PSPC, Swift XRT, and NuSTAR FPMA/B data of the nova-like (NL) cataclysmic variables (CVs), BZ Cam and V592 Cas in the 0.1-78.0 keV band. Plasma models of collisional equilibrium fail to model the 6.0-7.0 iron line complex and continuum with $χ^2_ν$ larger than 2.0. Our results show nonequilibrium ionization (NEI) conditions in the X-ray plasma with temperatures of 8.2-9.4 keV and 10.0-12.9 keV for BZ Cam and V592 Cas, respectively. The centroids of He-like and H-like iron ionization lines are not at their equilibrium values as expected from NEI con…
There is a very popular two-zone accretion disk model that the inner part of the non-advective Keplerian disk (Shakura-Sunyaev disk) can produce hot advection-dominated accretion flow, which can generate high energy power-law radiation and outflows/jets. However, we find that this simple model is inadequate to automatically explain many properties of the sources (such as hysteresis effect, counter-clockwise traversal in a hardness-intensity diagram, peculiar variabilities, and association/non-association of jets in a black hole $X-$ray binary) without considering additional assumptions. We als…
We use Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics to study viscous accretion flows around a weakly magnetic neutron star. We show the formation of multiple ``boundary" layers in presence of both cooling and viscosity. We find that with the introduction of a small viscosity in a sub-Keplerian flow, much like the wind accretion in HMXBs such as Cir X-1, only a single Normal Boundary Layer (NBOL) forms to adjust the rotational velocity component. With the increase of viscosity, the region extends radially and beyond some critical value, a RAdiative KEplerian Disk/layer (RAKED) forms between the sub-Kepleria…
Accretion on length-scales of interstellar or even intergalactic is particularly relevant, in the context of spherical or quasi-spherical hot mode accretion, supposedly powering low excitation radio galaxies in the maintenance-mode feedback paradigm. In the present study, we aim to analyze such a spherical-type flow around the host active nucleus in the backdrop of a five-component galactic system (SMBH, stellar, dark matter, diffuse hot gas, $Λ$), with the principal intent to address the issue of {\it galactic potential induced shock} formation in the flow, that may contain (dissipative) isot…
We study the overall spin precession frequency of a test gyroscope around a neutron star. The precession of the test gyroscope gives the signatures of the general relativistic effects that are present in the region of strong gravity of an NS. Using a numerical code, we find the precession of the test gyroscope for a rotating and a strongly magnetized neutron star. The magnetic field distribution inside the neutron star is assumed either to be poloidal or toroidal. The overall spin precession rate is obtained by setting the orbital frequency of the gyroscope to a non-zero value but restricted t…
Numerical simulations of radiative two-temperature hot accretion flows (HAFs) around Neutron stars (NSs) are performed. We assume that all of the energy carried by the HAF around a NS will be thermalized and radiated out at the surface of the NS. The thermal photons will propagate outwards radially and cool the HAF vis Comptonization. We define $\dot m$ as the mass accretion rate at the surface of the central object in unit of Eddington accretion rate ($\dot M_{\rm Edd}=10L_{\rm Edd}/c^2$, with $L_{\rm Edd}$ and $c$ being Eddington luminosity and speed of light, respectively). When $\dot m$ is…
In this paper, we present the complete structure of a quasi-Keplerian thin accretion disk with an internal dynamo around a magnetized neutron star. We assume a full quasi-Keplerian disk with the azimuthal velocity deviating from the Keplerian fashion by a factor of $ξ$ ($0<ξ<2$). In our approach, we vertically integrate the radial component of the momentum equation to obtain the radial pressure gradient equation for a thin quasi-Keplerian accretion disk. Our results show that, at large radial distance, the accretion disk behaves in a Keplerian fashion. However, close to the neutron star, press…
Pulsars are believed to loose their rotational kinetic energy primarily by a large amplitude low frequency electromagnetic wave which is eventually converted into particle creation, acceleration and followed by a broad band radiation spectrum. To date, there exist no detailed calculation of the exact spin-down luminosity with respect to the neutron star magnetic moment and spin frequency, including general-relativistic effects. Estimates are usually given according to the flat spacetime magnetodipole formula. The present paper pursue our effort to look for accurate solutions of the general-rel…
We perform as the first time hydrodynamic simulations to study the properties of hot accretion flow (HAF) around a neutron star (NS). The energy carried by the HAF will eventually be radiated out at the surface of the NS. The emitted photons can propagate inside the HAF and cool the HAF via Comptonization. We find that the Compton cooling can affect the properties of HAF around a NS significantly. We define the Eddington accretion rate as $\dot M_{\rm Edd}=10L_{\rm Edd}/c^2$, with $L_{\rm Edd}$ and $c$ being the Eddington luminosity and the speed of light, respectively. We define $\dot m$ as t…
