Sextic double solids, double covers of $\mathbb P^3$ branched along a sextic surface, are the lowest degree Gorenstein Fano 3-folds, hence are expected to behave very rigidly in terms of birational geometry. Smooth sextic double solids, and those which are $\mathbb Q$-factorial with ordinary double points, are known to be birationally rigid. In this article, we study sextic double solids with an isolated compound $A_n$ singularity. We prove a sharp bound $n \leq 8$, describe models for each $n$ explicitly and prove that sextic double solids with $n > 3$ are birationally non-rigid.
This note is about the Hilbert square $X=S^{[2]}$, where $S$ is a general $K3$ surface of degree $10$, and the anti-symplectic birational involution $ι$ of $X$ constructed by O'Grady. The main result is that the action of $ι$ on certain pieces of the Chow groups of $X$ is as expected by Bloch's conjecture. Since $X$ is birational to a double EPW sextic $X^\prime$, this has consequences for the Chow ring of the EPW sextic $Y\subset{\mathbb{P}}^5$ associated to $X^\prime$.
We prove the birational superrigidity and nonrationality of a hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^{6}$ of degree 6 having at most isolated ordinary double points.
In analogy to the case of cubic fourfolds, we discuss the conditions under which the double cover $\tilde{Y}_A$ of the EPW sextic hypersurface associated to a Gushel-Mukai fourfold is birationally equivalent to a moduli space of (twisted) stable sheaves on a K3 surface. In particular, we prove that $\tilde{Y}_A$ is birational to the Hilbert scheme of two points on a K3 surface if and only if the Gushel-Mukai fourfold is Hodge-special with discriminant $d$ such that the negative Pell equation $\mathcal{P}_{d/2}(-1)$ is solvable in $\mathbb{Z}$.
We prove non-rationality and birational super-rigidity of a Q-factorial double cover X of P^3 ramified along a sextic surface with at most simple double points. We also show that the condition #|Sing(X)| < 15 implies Q-factoriality of X. In particular, every double cover of P^3 with at most 14 simple double points is non-rational and not birationally isomorphic to a conic bundle. All the birational transformations of X into elliptic fibrations and into Fano 3-folds with canonical singularities are classified. We consider some relevant problems over fields of finite characteristic. When X is de…
The Chow rings of hyperKähler varieties are conjectured to have a particularly rich structure. In this paper, we focus on the locally complete family of double EPW sextics and establish some properties of their Chow rings. First we prove a Beauville-Voisin type theorem for zero-cycles on double EPW sextics; precisely, we show that the codimension-4 part of the subring of the Chow ring of a double EPW sextic generated by divisors, the Chern classes and codimension-2 cycles invariant under the anti-symplectic covering involution has rank one. Second, for double EPW sextics birational to the Hilb…
We prove that the Hilbert square $S^{[2]}$ of a very general primitively polarized K3 surface S of degree $d(n) = 2(4n^2 + 8n + 5)$, $n \geq 1$ is birational to a double Eisenbud-Popescu-Walter sextic. Our result implies a positive answers, in the case when $r$ is even, to a conjecture of O'Grady: On the Hilbert square of a very general K3 surface of genus $r^2 + 2$, $r \geq 1$ there is an antisymplectic involution. We explicitly give this involution on $S^{[2]}$ in term of the corresponding EPW polarization on it.
It is proved that the group of birational automorphisms of a three-dimensional double quadric with a singular point arising from a double point on the branch divisor is a semidirect product of the free group generated by birational involutions of a special form and the group of regular automorphisms. The proof is based on the method of `untwisting' maximal singularities of linear systems.
We study moduli spaces of certain sextic curves with a singularity of multiplicity 3 from both perspectives of Deligne-Mostow theory and periods of K3 surfaces. In both ways we can describe the moduli spaces via arithmetic quotients of complex hyperbolic balls. We show in Theorem 7.4 that the two ball-quotient constructions can be unified in a geometric way.
Let X be a supersingular K3 surface in characteristic 5 with Artin invariant 1. Then X has a polarization that realizes X as the Fermat sextic double plane. We present a list of polarizations of X with degree 2 whose intersection number with this Fermat sextic polarization is less than or equal to 5, and give the defining equations of the corresponding projective models. We also present a method to describe birational morphisms between these projective models explicitly. As a by-product, a non-projective automorphism of the Fermat sextic double plane is obtained.
Given a normal surface singularity $(X, Q)$ and a birational morphism to a non- singular surface $π: X \to S$, we investigate the local geometry of the exceptional divisor $L$ of $π$. We prove that the dimension of the tangent space to $L$ at $Q$ equals the number of exceptional components meeting at $Q$. Consequences relative to the existence of such birational projections contracting a prescribed number of irreducible curves are deduced. A new characterization of minimal singularities is obtained in these terms.
We study nonnegative (psd) real sextic forms $q(x_0,x_1,x_2)$ that are not sums of squares (sos). Such a form has at most ten real zeros. We give a complete and explicit characterization of all sets $S\subset\mathbb{P}^2(\mathbb{R})$ with $|S|=9$ for which there is a psd non-sos sextic vanishing in $S$. Roughly, on every plane cubic $X$ with only real nodes there is a certain natural divisor class $τ_X$ of degree~$9$, and $S$ is the real zero set of some psd non-sos sextic if, and only if, there is a unique cubic $X$ through $S$ and $S$ represents the class $τ_X$ on $X$. If this is the case, t…
We complete the analysis on the birational rigidity of quasismooth Fano 3-fold deformation families appearing in the Graded Ring Database as a complete intersection. When such a deformation family $X$ has Fano index at least 2 and is minimally embedded in a weighted projective space in codimension 2, we determine which cyclic quotient singularity is a maximal centre. If a cyclic quotient singularity is a maximal centre, we construct a Sarkisov link to a non-isomorphic Mori fibre space or a birational involution. This allows, in particular, the construction of new examples of Fano 3-folds of co…
We study the geometry and the period map of nodal complex prime Fano threefolds with index 1 and degree 10. We show that these threefolds are birationally isomorphic to Verra solids (hypersurfaces of bidegree $(2,2)$ in $ ¶^2\times ¶^2$). Using Verra's results on the period map for these solids and on the Prym map for double étale covers of plane sextic curves, we prove that the fiber of the period map for our nodal threefolds is birationally the union of two surfaces, for which we give several descriptions. This result is the analog in the nodal case of a result obtained in arXiv:0812.3670 fo…
By work of Looijenga and others, one has a good understanding of the relationship between GIT and Baily-Borel compactifications for the moduli spaces of degree 2 K3 surfaces, cubic fourfolds, and a few other related examples. The similar-looking cases of degree 4 K3 surfaces and double EPW sextics turn out to be much more complicated for arithmetic reasons. In this paper, we refine work of Looijenga to allow us to handle these cases. Specifically, in analogy with the so-called Hassett-Keel program for the moduli space of curves, we study the variation of log canonical models for locally symmet…
Let X be a projective 3-fold with at most Q-factorial terminal singularities on which K_X is nef and big. Suppose the canonical index r(X)>1. For any positive integer m, it is interesting to consider the base point freeness and birationality of the divisor mK_X. For example, we know the following results: (1) the system |5rK_X| is base point free (Ein-Lazarsfeld-Lee); (2) |mK_X| gives a birational map for all m>4r+2 (M. Hanamura). This article aims to present a better result in direction (2). As far as our method can tell here, |mK_X| gives a birational map for all m>2r+5. (Q-divisor method + …
In this paper we consider Q-Fano 3-fold weighted complete intersections of codimension 2 in the 85 families listed in the Iano-Fletcher's list and determine which cycle is a maximal center or not. For each maximal center, we construct either a birational involution which untwists the maximal singularity or a Sarkisov link centered at the cycle to an another explicitly described Mori fiber space. As a consequence, 19 families are proved to be birationally rigid and the remaining 66 families are proved to be birationally nonrigid.
A $K3$ surface with an ample divisor of self-intersection 2 is a double cover of the plane branched over a sextic curve. We conjecture that a similar statement holds for the generic couple $(X,H)$ with $X$ a deformation of $(K3)^{[n]}$ and $H$ an ample divisor of square 2 for Beauville's quadratic form. If $n=2$ then according to the conjecture $X$ is a double cover of a (singular) sextic 4-fold in $\PP^5$. It follows from the conjecture that a deformation of $(K3)^{[n]}$ carrying a divisor (not necessarily ample) of degree 2 has an anti-symplectic birational involution. We test the conjecture…
Mutations of the cluster variables generating the cluster algebra of type $A^{(2)}_2$ reduce to a two-dimensional discrete integrable system given by a quartic birational map. The invariant curve of the map is a singular quartic curve, and its resolution of the singularity induces a discrete integrable system on a conic governed by a cubic birational map conjugate to the cluster mutations of type $A^{(2)}_2$. Moreover, it is shown that the conic is also the invariant curve of the quadratic birational map arising from the cluster mutations of type $A^{(1)}_1$ and the two birational maps on the …
In previous work, we have introduced a program aimed at studying the birational geometry of locally symmetric varieties of Type IV associated to moduli of certain projective varieties of K3 type. In particular, a concrete goal of our program is to understand the relationship between GIT and Baily-Borel compactifications for quartic K3 surfaces, K3's which are double covers of a smooth quadric surface, and double EPW sextics. In our first paper (arXiv:1607.01324), based on arithmetic considerations, we have given conjectural decompositions into simple birational transformations of the period ma…
For a finite subgroup $Γ\subset \mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$ and for $n\geq 1$, we use variation of GIT quotient for Nakajima quiver varieties to study the birational geometry of the Hilbert scheme of $n$ points on the minimal resolution $S$ of the Kleinian singularity $\mathbb{C}^2/Γ$. It is well known that $X:=\mathrm{Hilb}^{[n]}(S)$ is a projective, crepant resolution of the symplectic singularity $\mathbb{C}^{2n}/Γ_n$, where $Γ_n=Γ\wr\mathfrak{S}_n$ is the wreath product. We prove that every projective, crepant resolution of $\mathbb{C}^{2n}/Γ_n$ can be realised as the fine moduli space of $…
A cusp singularity is a surface singularity whose minimal resolution is a cycle of smooth rational curves meeting transversely. Cusp singularities come in naturally dual pairs. Looijenga proved in 1981 that if a cusp singularity is smoothable, the minimal resolution of the dual cusp is the anticanonical divisor of some smooth rational surface. In 1983, the second author and Miranda gave a criterion for smoothability of a cusp singularity, in terms of the existence of a K-trivial semistable model for the central fiber of such a smoothing. We study these "Type III degenerations" of rational surf…
