We investigate the possibility that scalar leptoquarks generate consequential effects on the flavor-changing neutral-current decays of charmed hadrons into final states with missing energy ($\not\!\!E$) carried away by either standard model or sterile neutrinos. We focus on scenarios involving the $R_2$, $\tilde R_2$, and $\bar S_1$ leptoquarks and take into account various pertinent constraints, learning that meson-mixing ones and those inferred from collider searches can be of significance. We find in particular that the branching fractions of charmed meson decays $D\to M\!\not\!\!E$, $M=π,ρ$, and $D_s\to K^{(*)}\!\not\!\!E$ and singly charmed baryon decays $Λ_c^+\to p\!\not\!\!E$ and $Ξ_c\toΣ\!\not\!\!E$ are presently allowed to attain the $10^{-7}$-$10^{-6}$ levels if induced by $R_2$ and that the impact of $\tilde R_2$ is comparatively much less. In contrast, the contributions of $\bar S_1$, which couples to right-handed up-type quarks and the sterile neutrinos, could lead to branching fractions as high as order $10^{-3}$. This suggests that these charmed hadron decays might be within reach of the BESIII and Belle II experiments or future super charm-tau factories and could serve as potentially promising probes of leptoquark interactions with sterile neutrinos.
Recently it was noticed that among many scenarios of new physics leptoquarks might compensate for the disagreement between the lattice and experimental results for the charmed strange meson decay constant. The leptoquarks might modify also the flavor changing neutral current charm decays. In this study we investigate impact of the scalar leptoquark with electric charge -1/3 on the dilepton invariant mass distribution in the D^+ --> pi^+ mu^+ mu^- decay and on the branching ratios of the D^0 --> mu^+ mu^- using the existing experimental results.
Motivated by the disagreement between experimental and lattice QCD results on the D_s decay constant we systematically reinvestigate role of leptoquarks in charm meson decays. We consider scalar leptoquarks that transform as a weak interaction triplet, doublet, or singlet in a model independent approach, and also argue that in a particular SU(5) GUT model these leptoquark states, contained in the 45-dimensional Higgs representation, could be safe against proton decay bounds. Using the current experimental measurements in tau, kaon and charm sectors, we find that scalar leptoquarks cannot natur…
The $t\bar t$ plus missing energy channel is one of the most efficient to detect third-generation leptoquarks (LQs). It offers an important test to models which explain flavor anomalies in $B$ meson decays. We outline a search strategy in the channel, relying on tagging the tops and on observables constructed out of the tops, and we assess the reach on LQs of the future high-luminosity LHC program. We find that with 3 ab$^{-1}$ a vector (scalar) LQ decaying 50% (100%) to top and neutrino can be excluded up to masses of 1.96 TeV (1.54 TeV). We also indicate several observables that, in case of …
We entertain the possibility that scalar leptoquarks (LQs) generate consequential effects on the strangeness-changing decays of hyperons and kaons involving missing energy carried away by a pair of invisible fermions. Although such processes have suppressed rates in the standard model (SM), they could get significant enhancement in the presence of the LQs. In order to respect the available data on the kaon modes $K\toπν\barν$ and increase the rates of the hyperon decays substantially at the same time, two different scalar LQs are needed. If the LQs have Yukawa couplings solely to SM fermions, …
We investigate the potential for discovering new physics through the low-energy scattering processes $e^-p\to e^-(μ^-)Λ_c$, which could be accessible in the forthcoming $ep$ scattering experiments once adapted to our proposed setups. In the framework of a general low-energy effective Lagrangian, we demonstrate that, compared with the conventional flavor-changing neutral-current weak decays of charmed hadrons and the dilepton productions at high-energy colliders, the low-energy scattering processes can provide more competitive potentials for hunting the underlying new physics. In some specific …
We investigate the phenomenology of light GeV-scale fermionic dark matter in $U(1)_{L_μ- L_τ}$ gauge extension of the Standard Model. Heavy neutral fermions alongside with a $S_1(\overline{3}$,$1$,$1/3$) scalar leptoquark and an inert scalar doublet are added to address the flavor anomalies and light neutrino mass respectively. The light gauge boson associated with $U(1)_{L_μ-L_τ}$ gauge group mediates dark to visible sector and helps to obtain the correct relic density. Aided with a colored scalar, we constrain the new model parameters by using the branching ratios of various $b \to sll$ and …
We investigate the potential for searching and identifying the leptoquark (LQ) effects in the charm sector through the low-energy polarized scattering processes $\vec{e}^{\,-}p\to e^-Λ_c$, $e^-\vec{p}\to e^-Λ_c$, and $\vec{e}^{\,-}\vec{p}\to e^-Λ_c$. Considering only the longitudinally polarized processes, we show that the different LQ models can be disentangled from each other by measuring the four spin asymmetries, $A_{L}^e$, $A_{L}^p$, $A_{L3}^{ep}$, and $A_{L6}^{ep}$, constructed in terms of the polarized cross sections. Although it is challenging to accomplish the same goal with transvers…
An analysis of charm mesons decaying semileptonically via Flavor Changing Neutral Currents is presented. We calculate the Wilson coefficients within the Standard Model. A window in the decay distribution, where physics beyond the Standard Model could be measured is identified. Exemplary, we study effects of leptoquark models.
The LHCb bounds on the branching ratio of rare decay $D^0 \to μ^+ μ^-$ and the constraints on the branching ratio of $D^+ \to π^+ μ^+ μ^-$ in the nonresonant regions enable us to improve constraints on new physics contributions. Using the effective Lagrangian approach we determine sizes of the Wilson coefficients allowed by the existing LHCb bounds on rare charm decays. Then we discuss contributions to rare charm meson decay observables in several models of new physics: a model with an additional spin-1 weak triplet, leptoquark models, Two Higgs doublets model of type III, and a $Z'$ model. He…
Charm procceses are usually not considered to be favorable candidates in the search for new physics. Recent disagreement between experimental and lattice QCD results on the D_s decay constant has motivated us to systematically reinvestigate role of leptoquarks in rare charm meson decays. We include constrains coming from the light meson decays.
We investigate a model in which tiny neutrino masses are generated at the two-loop level by using scalar leptoquark and diquark multiplets. The diquark can be singly produced at the LHC, and it can decay into a pair of leptoquarks through the lepton number violating interaction. Subsequent decays of the two leptoquarks can provide a clear signature of the lepton number violation, namely two QCD jets and a pair of same-signed charged leptons without missing energy. We show that the signal process is not suppressed while neutrino masses are appropriately suppressed.
We study the leptoquark model of Buchmüller, Rückl and Wyler, focusing on a particular type of scalar ($R_2$) and vector ($U_1$) leptoquark. The primary aim is to perform the calculations for leptoquark production and decay at next-to-leading order (NLO) to establish the importance of the NLO contributions and, in particular, to determine how effective the narrow-width-approximation (NWA) is at NLO. For both the scalar and vector leptoquarks it is found that the NLO contributions are large, with the larger corrections occurring for the case vector leptoquarks. For the scalar leptoquark it is f…
We study (semi)leptonic rare charm decays and its opportunities in searches for physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). In particular, we analyse the impact of potential BSM physics in $c\to ull'$ transitions, notably branching ratios, angular observables, asymmetries and Lepton Flavour Violating (LFV) decays. Testable effects are worked out model-independently and within Leptoquark models supplemented with flavour patterns to link $K$/$B$ decays.
Motivated by the recent measurement of $D^0\toρ^0γ$ improved standard model (SM) predictions for branching ratios and CP asymmetries of radiative charm decay are given. Weak annihilation induced decays are probes of non-perturbative QCD approaches. Rare decays probe the SM and physics beyond the SM, e.g. leptoquark and supersymmetric models. Opportunities with $Λ_c\to pγ$ for future polarization measurements are presented.
Flavor symmetries that explain masses and mixings of the standard model fermions dictate flavor patterns for the couplings of scalar and vector leptoquarks to the standard model fermions. A generic feature is that couplings to $SU(2)$-doublet leptons are suppressed at least by one spurion of the discrete non-abelian symmetry breaking, responsible for neutrino mixing, while couplings to charged lepton singlets can be order one. We obtain testable patterns including those that predominantly couple to a single lepton flavor, or two, or in a skewed way. They induce lepton non-universality, which w…
We consider the phenomenological signatures of Simplified Models of Flavourful Leptoquarks, whose Beyond-the-Standard Model (SM) couplings to fermion generations occur via textures that are well motivated from a broad class of ultraviolet flavour models (which we briefly review). We place particular emphasis on the study of the vector leptoquark $Δ_μ$ with assignments $\left({\bf{3}}, {\bf{1}}, 2/3 \right)$ under the SM's gauge symmetry, $SU(3)_C \times SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y$, which has the tantalising possibility of explaining both $\mathcal{R}_{K^{(\star)}}$ and $\mathcal{R}_{D^{(\star)}}$ a…
The recent progress in experiments at B-factories suggests an opportunity to search for missing charmonium states $η_{c}'(2^1S_0)$ and $h_c(1^1P_1)$. The feasibility of such a search in B-meson decays are discussed.
Given the hints of lepton-flavour non-universality in $B$-meson decays, leptoquarks (LQs) are enjoying a renaissance. We propose novel Large Hadron Collider (LHC) searches for such hypothetical states that do not rely on strong production only, but can also receive important contributions from quark-lepton annihilation. For the cases of a resonant signal involving a bottom quark and a tau lepton ($b + τ$), a top quark and missing transverse energy ($E_{T}^{\rm miss}$) and light-flavour jets plus $E_{T}^{\rm miss}$, we develop realistic analysis strategies and provide detailed evaluations of th…
We perform a systematic analysis of scalar and vector leptoquark pair production at the Fermilab Tevatron and at the CERN LHC. We evaluate signal expectations and background levels for the processes pp (p ppar) -> 2 jets + e^{+} + e^{-} and 2 jets + e + missing p_T. The Monte Carlo event generator ISAJET is used to simulate the experimental conditions at the current (Sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV, Luminosity=100 pb^{-1}) and upgraded (Luminosity=100 pb^{-1}) Tevatron as well as the LHC (Sqrt{s}=14 TeV, Luminosity=10 fb^{-1}). Depending on the luminosity, and assuming a branching ratio B(LQ -> eq)=0.5, we fi…
We consider an extension of the Standard Model (SM) augmented by two neutral singlet fermions per generation and a leptoquark. In order to generate the light neutrino masses and mixing, we incorporate inverse seesaw mechanism. The right handed neutrino production in this model is significantly larger than the conventional inverse seesaw scenario. We analyze the different collider signatures of this model and find that the final states associated with three or more leptons, multi jet and at least one b-tagged and (or) $τ$-tagged jet can probe larger RH neutrino mass scale. We have also proposed…
We outline a coherent strategy for exploring the four remaining narrow charmonium states [$η_{c}^{\prime}(2\slj{1}{1}{0})$, $h_{c}(1\slj{1}{2}{1})$, $η_{c2}(1\slj{1}{3}{2})$, and $ψ_{2}(1\slj{3}{3}{2})$] expected to lie below charm threshold. Produced in $B$-meson decays, these levels should be identifiable \textit{now} via striking radiative transitions among charmonium levels and in exclusive final states of kaons and pions. Their production and decay rates will provide much needed new tests for theoretical descriptions of heavy quarkonia.
We present standard model (SM) estimates for exclusive $c \to u γ$ processes in heavy quark and hybrid frameworks. Measured branching ratios ${\cal{B}}(D^0 \to (ϕ, \bar K^{*0}) γ)$ are at or somewhat exceeding the upper range of the SM and suggest slow convergence of the $1/m_D, α_s$-expansion. Model-independent constraints on $|ΔC|=|ΔU|=1$ dipole operators from ${\cal{B}}(D^0 \to ρ^0 γ)$ data are obtained. Predictions and implications for leptoquark models are worked out. While branching ratios are SM-like CP asymmetries $\lesssim 10 \%$ can be induced. In SUSY deviations from the SM can be e…
Newly observed two charmed-strange resonances, $D_{s1}^*(2860)$ and $D_{s3}^*(2860)$, are investigated by calculating their Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka allowed strong decays, which shows that they are suitable candidates for the $1^3D_1$ and $1^3D_3$ states in the charmed-strange meson family. Our study also predicts other main decay modes of $D_{s1}^*(2860)$ and $D_{s3}^*(2860)$, which can be accessible at the future experiment. In addition, the decay behaviors of the spin partners of $D_{s1}^*(2860)$ and $D_{s3}^*(2860)$, i.e., $1D(2^-)$ and $1D^\prime(2^-)$, are predicted in this work, which are sti…
A final state consisting of one charged lepton, at least one jet, and little missing transverse energy can be a very promising signature of new physics at the LHC across a wide range of models. However, it has received only limited attention so far. In this work we discuss the potential sensitivity of this channel to various new physics scenarios. To demonstrate our point, we consider its application to lepton parton density functions (PDFs) at the LHC in the context of supersymmetry. These lepton PDFs can lead to resonant squark production (similar to leptoquarks) via lepton number violating …
Updated standard model predictions for $D_{(s)} \to P l^+ l^-$, $l=e,μ$, $P=π,K$ and inclusive decays are presented. Model-independent constraints on $|ΔC|=|ΔU|=1$ Wilson coefficients are worked out. New physics (NP) opportunities arise in semileptonic branching ratios for very large couplings only, however, are not excluded outside the resonance regions yet. The NP potential of resonance-assisted CP asymmetries and angular observables is worked out. Predictions are given for leptoquark models, and include lepton flavor violating and dineutrino decays. Whether NP can be seen depends on flavor …
Recent CMS searches for di-leptoquark production report local excesses of 2.4$σ$ in a $eejj$ channel and 2.6$σ$ in a $ejj$ missing $p_T$ channel. Here, we simultaneously explain both excesses with resonant slepton production in ${\mathcal R}-$parity violating supersymmetry (SUSY). We consider resonant slepton production, which decays to a lepton and a chargino/neutralino, followed by three-body decays of the neutralino/chargino via an $\mathcal{R}-$parity violating coupling. There are regions of parameter space which are also compatible at the 95% confidence level (CL) with a 2.8$σ$ $eejj$ exc…
We study the effect of scalar leptoquark and $Z^\prime$ boson on the rare decays of $D$ mesons involving flavour changing transitions $c \to u l^+ l^- (l^\mp_i l^\pm_j)$. We constrain the new physics parameter space using the branching ratio of the rare decay mode $D^0 \to μ^+ μ^-$ and the $D^0-\bar D^0$ oscillation data. We compute the branching ratios, forward-backward asymmetry parameters and flat terms in $D^{+(0)} \to π^{+(0)} μ^+ μ^-$ processes using the constrained parameters. The branching ratios of the lepton flavour violating $D$ meson decays, such as $D^0 \to μe, ~τe$ and $D^{+(0)} …
Semileptonic Flavor Changing Neutral Current decays of charmed hadrons uniquely probe the up-sector of the Standard Model. Clean null test observables, such as CP-asymmetries, lepton-universality ratios, missing energy modes, lepton flavor violating modes and angular observables can be studied in a variety of charmed meson and baryon modes. An overview of null test opportunities with rare charm decays is presented and similarities and complementarities of different modes are worked out.
We calculate the contributions of penguin diagrams with internal u or c quarks to various inclusive charmless B-decay rates. Further we analyze the influence of the chromomagnetic dipole operator Q_8 on these rates. We find that the rates corresponding to B-bar --> X_{u u-bar s}, B-bar --> X_{d d-bar s}, B-bar --> X_{s s-bar s}, B-bar --> X_{s s-bar d} and B --> X_{d d-bar d} are dominated by the new penguin contributions. The contributions of Q_8 sizably diminish these rates. Despite of an increase of the total charmless decay rate by 36 % the new contributions are not large enough to explain…
We analyze rare charm baryon decays within the standard model and beyond. We identify all null test observables in unpolarized $Λ_c \to p \ell^+ \ell^-$, $\ell=e, μ$ decays, and study the new physics sensitivities. We find that the longitudinal dilepton polarization fraction $F_L$ is sensitive to electromagnetic dipole couplings $C_{7}^{(\prime)}$, and to the right-handed 4-fermion vector coupling $C_{9}^\prime$. The forward-backward asymmetry, $A_{\rm FB}$, due to the GIM-suppression a standard model null test already, probes the left-handed axialvector 4-fermion coupling $C_{10}$; its CP-asy…
A new technique is discussed that can be applied to $Λ_b^0$ baryon decays where decays with one missing particle can be discerned from background and their branching fractions determined, along with other properties of the decays. Applications include measurements of the CKM elements $|V_{ub}|$ and $|V_{cb}|$, selected charmless decays, and detection of any exotic objects coupling to $b\to s$ decays, such as the inflaton.
We consider the problem of reconstructing energies, momenta, and masses in collider events with missing energy, along with the complications introduced by combinatorial ambiguities and measurement errors. Typically, one reconstructs more than one value and we show how the wrong values may be correlated with the right ones. The problem has a natural formulation in terms of the theory of Riemann surfaces. We discuss examples including top quark decays in the Standard Model (relevant for top quark mass measurements and tests of spin correlation), cascade decays in models of new physics containing…
We investigate the possibility of searching the lepton-flavor-violating (LFV) $τ\rightarrow μγ$ rare decay at the Super Charm-Tau Factory (CTF). By comparing the kinematic distributions of the LFV signal and the standard model (SM) background, we develop an optimized event selection criteria which can significantly reduce the background events. It is concluded that new $2 σ$ upper limit of about $1.9 \times 10^{-9}$ on $Br(τ\rightarrow μγ)$ can be obtained at the CTF, which is beyond the capability of Super-B factory in searching $τ$ lepton rare decay. Within the framework of the scalar leptoq…
Inspired by the present experimental status of charmed-strange mesons, we perform a systematic study of the charmed-strange meson family, in which we calculate the mass spectra of the charmed-strange meson family by taking a screening effect into account in the Godfrey-Isgur model and investigate the corresponding strong decays via the quark pair creation model. These phenomenological analyses of charmed-strange mesons not only shed light on the features of the observed charmed-strange states, but also provide important information on future experimental search for the missing higher radial an…

We explore the possibility of experimentally detecting a predicted $h_1 ~[I^G(J^{PC})=0^-(1^{+-})]$ state of hidden charm made out from the $D^* \bar D^*$ interaction. The method consists in measuring the decay of X(4660) into $ηD^* \bar D^*$, determining the binding energy with respect to the $D^* \bar D^*$ threshold from the shape of the $D^* \bar D^*$ invariant mass distribution. A complementary method consists in looking at the inclusive $X(4660) \to ηX$ decay, searching for a peak in the $X$ invariant mass distribution given by the missing X(4660), $η$ mass. We make calculations to determ…

In this work, we systematically study the mass spectra and strong decays of $1P$ and $2S$ charmed and charmed-strange baryons in the framework of nonrelativistic constituent quark models. With the light quark cluster-heavy quark picture, the masses are simply calculated by a potential model. The strong decays are studied by the Eichten-Hill-Quigg decay formula. Masses and decay properties of the well-established $1S$ and $1P$ states can be reproduced by our method. $Σ_c(2800)^{0,+,++}$ can be assigned as a $Σ_{c2}(3/2^-)$ or $Σ_{c2}(5/2^-)$ state. We prefer to interpret the signal $Σ_c(2850)^0…
To write a review on charm decays is not an easy task because of the large amount (fortunately!) of experimental results in the recent years. I was forced to make a selection of topics. I am going to discuss with the eyes of an experimentalist: D0-D0bar mixing, CP violation, rare decays, charm lifetimes, semileptonic decays, hadronic decays, and the big surprise of the DsJ states. Obviously there are some missing topics, however I hope to show clearly my point of view.
A massless dark photon could affect standard-model particles only via higher-dimensional operators and would therefore have eluded recent searches for its massive counterpart, which were based on the assumption that the latter had renormalizable interactions with known fermions due to gauge kinetic mixing. In this study we entertain the possibility that the massless dark photon has nonnegligible flavor-changing dipole-type couplings with the $u$ and $c$ quarks, giving rise to the decays of charmed hadrons into a lighter hadron plus missing energy carried away by the dark photon. We propose to …
Photoproduction of the charmonium-like state $Z_{c}(4200)$ and the charmed baryon $Λ_{c}^{\ast }(2940)$ is investigated with an effective Lagrangian approach and the Regge trajectories applying to the COMPASS experiment. Combining the experimental data from COMPASS and our theoretical model we estimate the upper limit of $Γ_{Z_{c}(4200)\rightarrow J/ψπ}$ to be of about 37 MeV. Moreover, the possibility to produce $Λ_{c}^{\ast }(2940)$ at COMPASS is discussed. It seems one can try to search for this hadron in the missing mass spectrum since the $t$-channel is dominating for the $Λ_{c}^{\ast }(2…
We propose a new method to discover light top squarks (stops) in the co-annihilation region at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The bino-like neutralino is the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) and the lighter stop is the next-to-LSP. Such scenarios can be consistent with electroweak baryogenesis and also with dark matter constraints. We consider the production of two stops in association with two b-quarks, including pure QCD as well as mixed electroweak-QCD contributions. The stops decay into a charm quark and the LSP. For a higgsino-like light chargino the electroweak contributions can …
In many extensions of the Standard Model the presence of an extra neutral boson, Z', is invoked. A precision study of weak neutral-current exchange processes involving only second generation fermions is still missing. We propose a search for Z' in muon neutrino associated charm production. This process only involves Z' couplings with fermions from the second generation. An experimental method is thoroughly described using an ideal detector. As an application, the accuracy reachable with present and future experiments has been estimated.
We study three newly observed D(2550), D(2610), and D(2760) by the BaBar Collaboration utilizing the mass spectra and investigating the strong decays. Our calculation indicates that D(2610) is an admixture of $2^3S_1$ and $1^3D_1$ with $J^P=1^-$. $D(2760)$ can be explained as either the orthogonal partner of D(2610) or $1^3D_3$. Our estimate of the decay width for $D(2550)$, assuming it as $2^1S_0$, is far below the experimental value. the threshold effect because the strong decay of $D(2550)\to D_0^*π$ is forbidden.} The decay behavior of the remaining two 1D charmed mesons, i.e., $^3D_2$ and…
Beauty and charm e+e- factories running at resonance thresholds have unique capabilities for studies of the production of light Dark Matter particles in the decays of B_q (D) meson pairs. We provide a comprehensive study of light Dark Matter production in heavy meson decays with missing energy in the final state, such as B_q (D^0) -> "missing energy" and B_q (D^0) -> γ+ "missing energy". We argue that such transitions can be studied at the current flavor factories (and future super-flavor factories) by tagging the missing-energy decays with B_q (D^0) decays "on the other side".
We calculate the spectrum of $B_c$ mesons using a non-relativistic quark potential model. Using the calculated wave functions, we compute the radiative widths of $B_c$ excited states. The strong decay widths are calculated in a modified $^3P_0$ model, assuming harmonic oscillator wave functions. The hadronic transition rates of $B_c$ mesons are calculated using the Kuang-Yan approach. These results are used to determine branching ratios of possible decay channels of several $B_c$ excited states. Calculated branching ratios are then combined with production cross section of $B_c$ states at the …
The $\ppp = ψ(3770)$ resonance is expected to be mainly $c \bar c(1^3D_1)$, but tensor forces and coupling to charmed particle pairs can mix it with $\pp(2^3S_1)$ and other states. Implications of this mixing for decays of $\ppp$ to non-charmed final states are discussed. (i) The ratio $Γ(\ppp \to γ+ χ_{c2})/ Γ(\ppp \to γ+ χ_{c0})$ is expected to be highly suppressed if $\ppp$ is a pure D-wave state, and is enchanced by mixing. (ii) The expected decay $\pp \to ρπ$ and other ``missing'' modes can appear as corresponding $\ppp$ partial widths, enhanced by a factor depending on the mixing angle. …
We study the LHC sensitivity to a $W'$ produced via bottom and charm quarks and decaying to $τ$ flavor leptons in the mass range 200-1000 GeV. We show that the extra $b$ quarks necessitated by the production mechanism can improve the background rejection compared to an inclusive analysis relying solely on $τ$-tagging and $E_{T}^{\text{miss}}$. We present prospective limits on the couplings and compare them to the best fit to the $R(D^{(\ast)})$ anomalies in $B$ meson decays.
