Given the recent interest in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves in pores and sunspot umbrae, we examine the damping of slow surface kink modes (SSKMs) by modeling solar photospheric waveguides with a cylindrical inhomogeneity comprising a uniform interior, a uniform exterior, and a continuous transition layer (TL) in between. Performing an eigen-mode analysis in linear, resistive, gravity-free MHD, our approach is idealized in that, among other things, our equilibrium is structured only in the radial direction. We can nonetheless address two damping mechanisms simultaneously, one being the Ohmic resistivity, and the other being the resonant absorption of SSKMs in the cusp and Alfv$\acute{\rm e}$n continua. We find that the relative importance of the two mechanisms depends sensitively on the magnetic Reynolds number ($R_{\rm m}$). Resonant absorption is the sole damping mechanism for realistically large values of $R_{\rm m}$, and the cusp resonance in general dominates the Alfv$\acute{\rm e}$n one unless the axial wavenumbers are at the lower end of the observationally relevant range. We also find that the thin-boundary approximation holds only when the TL-width-to-radius ratios are much smaller than nominally expected. The Ohmic resistivity is far more important for realistically small $R_{\rm m}$. Even in this case, SSKMs are only marginally damped, with damping-time-to-period-ratios reaching $\sim 10$ in the parameter range we examine.
We study the effect of resonant absorption of surface sausage and surface kink modes under photospheric conditions where the slow surface sausage modes undergo resonant damping in the slow continuum and the surface kink modes in the slow and Alfvén continua at the transitional layers. We use recently derived analytical formulas to obtain the damping rate (time). By considering linear density and linear pressure profiles for the transitional layers, we show that resonant absorption in the slow continuum could be an efficient mechanism for the wave damping of the slow surface sausage and slow su…
Small-scale magnetic field concentrations (magnetic elements) in the quiet Sun are believed to contribute to the energy budget of the upper layers of the Sun's atmosphere, as they are observed to support a large number of MHD modes. In recent years, kink waves in magnetic elements were observed at different heights in the solar atmosphere, from the photosphere to the corona. However, the propagation of these waves has not been fully evaluated. Our aim is to investigate the propagation of kink waves in small magnetic elements in the solar atmosphere. We analysed spectropolarimetric data of high…
Magnetoacoustic waves in solar magnetic flux tubes may be affected by the presence of background rotational flows. Here, we investigate the behaviour of $m=0$ and $m=\pm 1$ modes of a magnetic flux tube in the presence of linear background rotational flows embedded in a photospheric environment. We show that the inclusion of a background rotational flow is found to have little effect on the obtained eigensolutions for the axisymmetric $m=0$ sausage mode. However, solutions for the kink mode are dependent on the location of the flow resonance modified by the slow frequency. A background rotatio…
Using the spectroscopic imaging capabilities of the Swedish Solar Telescope, we aim to provide the first investigation on the nature and dynamics of elongated absorption features (fibrils) observed in H$α$ in the internetwork. We observe and identify a number of internetwork fibrils, which form away from the kilogauss, network magnetic flux, and we provide a synoptic view on their behaviour. The internetwork fibrils are found to support wave-like behaviour, which we interpret as Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) kink waves. The properties of these waves, that is, amplitude, period, and propagation spe…
Context. Waves are ubiquitous in the solar corona and there are indications that they are excited by photospheric p-modes. However, it is unclear how p-modes in coronal loops are converted to sausage modes and transverse (kink) modes, which are observed in the corona. Aims. We aim to investigate how those wave modes are excited in the lower corona by photospheric acoustic waves. Methods. We built 3D magnetohydrostatic loop systems with multiple inclinations spanning from the photosphere to the lower corona. We then simulated these atmospheres with the MANCHA code, in which we perturb the equil…
Recent ground- and space-based observations reveal the presence of small-scale motions between convection cells in the solar photosphere. In these regions small-scale magnetic flux tubes are generated due to the interaction of granulation motion and background magnetic field. This paper studies the effects of these motions, on magnetohydrodynamic wave excitation from broadband photospheric drivers. Numerical experiments of linear magnetohydrodynamic wave propagation in a magnetic flux tube embedded in a realistic gravitationally stratified solar atmosphere between the photosphere and the low c…
This paper presents an improved MHD modeling of the confined filament eruption in solar active region NOAA~9957 on 2002 May~27 by extending the parametric studies of the event in Torok & Kliem 2005 and Hassanin & Kliem 2016. Here the initial flux rope equilibrium is chosen to possess a small apex height identical to the observed initial filament height, which implies a more realistic inclusion of the photospheric line tying. The model matches the observations as closely as in the preceding studies, with the closest agreement again being obtained for an initial average flux rope twist of about …
From $5.5$ months of dual-band optical photometric monitoring at the $1$ mmag level, BRITE-Constellation has revealed two simultaneous types of variability in the O4I(n)fp star $ζ$ Puppis: one single periodic non-sinusoidal component superimposed on a stochastic component. The monoperiodic component is the $1.78$ d signal previously detected by Coriolis/SMEI, but this time along with a prominent first harmonic. The shape of this signal changes over time, a behaviour that is incompatible with stellar oscillations but consistent with rotational modulation arising from evolving bright surface inh…
Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) kink waves are ubiquitously observed in the solar atmosphere. The propagation and damping of these waves may play relevant roles for the transport and dissipation of energy in the solar atmospheric medium. However, in the atmospheric plasma dissipation of transverse MHD wave energy by viscosity or resistivity needs very small spatial scales to be efficient. Here, we theoretically investigate the generation of small scales in nonuniform solar magnetic flux tubes due to phase mixing of MHD kink waves. We go beyond the usual approach based on the existence of a global qu…
The role of diffuse photospheric magnetic elements in the energy budget of the upper layers of the Sun's atmosphere has been the recent subject of many studies. This was made possible by the availability of high temporal and spatial resolution observations of the solar photosphere, allowing large numbers of magnetic elements to be tracked to study their dynamics. In this work we exploit a long temporal series of seeing-free magnetograms of the solar photosphere to study the effect of the turbulent convection in the excitation of kink oscillations in magnetic elements. We make use of the empiri…
Standing oscillations with multiple periods were found in a number of atmospheric structures on the Sun. The ratio of the period of the fundamental to twice the one of its first overtone, $P_1/2P_2$, is important in applications of solar magneto-seismology. We examine how field-aligned flows impact $P_1/2P_2$ of standing modes in solar magnetic cylinders. For coronal loops, the flow effects are significant for both fast kink and sausage modes. For kink ones, they reduce $P_1/2P_2$ by up to 17\% relative to the static case even when the density contrast between the loop and its surroundings app…
The wings of Ca II H and K as photospheric diagnostics and the reliability of one-dimensional photosphere modeling
Using the high-resolution observations from New Vacuum Solar Telescope (NVST) jointly with the Solar Dynamics Observatory data, we investigate two successive confined eruptions (Erup1 and Erup2) of a small filament in a decaying active region on 2017 November 10. During the process of Erup1, the overlying magnetic arcade is observed to inflate with the rising filament at beginning and then stop the ongoing of the explosion. In the hot EUV channel, a coronal sigmoidal structure appears during the first eruption and fade away after the second one. The untwisting rotation and disintegration of th…
In this study, we model a sequence of a confined and a full eruption, employing the relaxed end state of the confined eruption of a kink-unstable flux rope as the initial condition for the ejective one. The full eruption, a model of a coronal mass ejection, develops as a result of converging motions imposed at the photospheric boundary, which drive flux cancellation. In this process, parts of the positive and negative external flux converge toward the polarity inversion line, reconnect, and cancel each other. Flux of the same amount as the canceled flux transfers to a flux rope, increasing the…
Fast sausage modes in solar magnetic coronal loops are only fully contained in unrealistically short dense loops. Otherwise they are leaky, losing energy to their surrounds as outgoing waves. This causes any oscillation to decay exponentially in time. Simultaneous observations of both period and decay rate therefore reveal the eigenfrequency of the observed mode, and potentially insight into the tubes' nonuniform internal structure. In this article, a global spectral description of the oscillations is presented that results in an implicit matrix eigenvalue equation where the eigenvalues are as…
The initial success of the Rigidly Rotating Magnetosphere (RRM) model application to the B2Vp star sigma OriE by Townsend, Owocki & Groote (2005) triggered a renewed era of observational monitoring of this archetypal object. We utilize high-resolution spectropolarimetry and the magnetic Doppler imaging (MDI) technique to simultaneously determine the magnetic configuration, which is predominately dipolar, with a polar strength Bd = 7.3-7.8 kG and a smaller non-axisymmetric quadrupolar contribution, as well as the surface distribution of abundance of He, Fe, C, and Si. We describe a revised RRM …
We studied a flare onset process in terms of stability of a three-dimensional (3D) magnetic field in active region 12371 producing an eruptive M6.5 flare in 2015 June 22. In order to reveal the 3D magnetic structure, we first extrapolated the 3D coronal magnetic fields based on time series of the photospheric vector magnetic fields under a nonlinear force-free field (NLFFF) approximation. The NLFFFs nicely reproduced the observed sigmoidal structure which is widely considered to be preeruptive magnetic configuration. In particular, we found that the sigmoid is composed of two branches of shear…
