We propose a new out-of-equilibrium production mechanism of light dark matter: resonance scanning. If the dark matter mass evolved in the early Universe, resonant production may have occurred for a wide range of light dark matter masses today. We show that the dark matter relic abundance may be produced through the Higgs portal, in a manner consistent with current experimental constraints.
We analyse confining gauge theories where the 750 GeV di-photon resonance is a composite techni-pion that undergoes anomalous decays into SM vectors. These scenarios naturally contain accidentally stable techni-pions Dark Matter candidates. The di-photon resonance can acquire a larger width by decaying into Dark Matter through the CP-violating $θ$-term of the new gauge theory reproducing the cosmological Dark Matter density as thermal relic.
We construct explicit models of particle dark matter where the attractive force in the dark matter sector creates a narrow near-threshold resonance that qualitatively changes the energy dependence of the annihilation cross section. In these models, the resonant enhancement of the dark matter annihilation can easily source the excess of energetic leptons observed by experiments on PAMELA and FERMI satellites. The distinct feature of these models is that by construction the enhancement of the annihilation cross section shuts off when the dark matter velocity falls below the typical Milky Way val…
We reevaluate the thermal relic density of the Kaluza-Klein (KK) dark matter in universal extra dimension models. In particular, we consider the effect of the resonance caused by second KK particles on the density. We find that the annihilation cross sections relevant to the density are significantly enhanced due to the resonance when the Higgs boson mass is large enough (m_h \gtrsim 200 GeV). As a result, the mass of the dark matter particle consistent with the WMAP observation is increased compared to the result which does not include any resonance.
We consider models of dark matter where the couplings between the standard model and the dark sector fall at resonance due to kinematics and direct detection experiments become insensitive. To be specific, we consider a simple model of 100 GeV - TeV scale dark matter coupled to the standard model via a vector boson. We explore whether it will be possible to exclude such regions of the parameter space using future observations of dijet rates at the LHC and CTA and AMS observations of the Galactic Centre.
We explain the $750$ GeV diphoton resonance in the context of the dark left-right symmetric model. A global symmetry in this model, stabilizes the dark matter and ensures that the scalar couples dominantly to gluons and photons. The branching fraction of the scalar to diphoton is large as a consequence of the symmetries of the theory. The benchmark values assumed to fit the diphoton signal also give the correct relic density of dark matter and muon $(g-2)$. A specific prediction of this model is that the dark matter has a mass of 200 GeV.
We study a minimal model for a light scalar dark matter, requiring a light scalar mediator to address the core-cusp problem and interact with the standard model particles. We analyze the model comprehensively by focusing on the Breit-Wigner resonance for dark matter annihilation and self-scattering channels, considering the thermal relic abundance condition that includes the early kinetic decoupling effect, as well as the present and future constraints from collider, direct, and indirect dark matter detections. We found that the scalar dark matter with the mass of 0.3-2 GeV remains uncharted, …
One of the main problems in Particle Physics is to understand the origin and nature of Dark Matter. An exciting possibility is to consider that the Dark Matter belongs to a new complex but hidden sector. In this paper, we assume the existence of a strongly interacting dark sector consisting on a new scalar doublet and new vector resonances, in concordance with a model recently proposed by our group. Since in a previous work it was found that it is very challenging to find the new vector resonances at the LHC, here we study the possibility of finding them at the a future Compact Linear Collider…
We revisit a set of dark sector models, motivated by anomalies observed in $B$ decays and the muon anomalous magnetic moment, in the light of a recently reported diphoton excess around 750$\,$GeV. Interpreting the excess as a scalar resonance associated with the symmetry breaking sector of a dark gauge group, we show that a diphoton cross section of few fb can be accomodated, together with anomalies in $R_K$ and $g_μ-2$ within a minimal dark sector model. The resulting prominent collider signatures are in the form of wide resonant signals into top and muon pair final states below $\sim1\,$TeV.…
We consider a light dark matter candidate which is produced by the freeze-out mechanism with $3\rightarrow2$ annihilations, the so called Strongly Interacting Massive Particles (SIMPs). SIMPs are identified as dark pions in dark chiral perturbation theory (ChPT) where both light mass and strong coupling needed for SIMPs can be realized by strong dynamics. In QCD-like theories with $SU(3)_L \times SU(3)_R /SU(3)_V$ flavor symmetry, including dark vector mesons in the hidden local symmetry scheme, we illustrate that dark vector mesons unitarize the dark ChPT efficiently, thus determine the corre…
The hunt for dark matter remains one of the principal objectives of modern physics and cosmology. Searches for dark matter in the form of axions are proposed or underway across a range of experimental collaborations. As we look to the next generation of detectors, a natural question to ask is whether there are new experimental designs waiting to be discovered and how we might find them. Here we take a new approach to the experimental design procedure by using gradient descent techniques to search for optimal detector designs. We provide a proof of principle for this technique by searching 1D d…
Dark pion is the one of the most natural and realistic model to make $3 \rightarrow 2$ contact interactions among models of the Strongly Interacting Massive Particle (SIMP). In this model, there is a perturbativity problem to satisfy the relic density with the self-annihilation. So we show the perturbativity problem can be alleviated and the SIMP pion model become more realistic by including dark vector mesons.
As an interpretation of the 750 GeV diphoton excesses recently reported by both ATLAS and CMS collaborations, we consider a simple extension of the Standard Model with a Dirac fermion dark matter where a singlet complex scalar field mediates between dark matter and SM particles via effective couplings to SM gauge bosons and/or Higgs-portal. In this model, we can accommodate the diphoton events through the direct and/or cascade decays of pseudo-scalar and real scalar partners of the complex scalar field. We show that mono-jet searches and gamma-ray observations are complementary in constraining…
Motivated by the possibility of enhancing dark matter (DM) self-interaction cross-section $σ_{\rm self}$, we have revisited the issue of DM annihilation through a Breit-Wigner resonance. In this case thermally averaged annihilation cross-section has strong temperature dependence, whereas elastic scattering of DM on the thermal bath particles is suppressed. This leads to the early kinetic decoupling of DM and an interesting interplay in the evolution of DM density and temperature that can be described by a set of coupled Boltzmann equations. The standard Breit-Wigner parametrization of a resona…
We propose a minimal model of a fermionic dark matter with a pseudoscalar mediator and N generation of vector-like quarks. We calculate the relic density and obtain new constraint on the generation of the aforementioned quarks. Concerning phenomenological aspects, we probe the presenting model via direct and indirect approaches. Finally, as an illustrative example, we evaluate a resonance case which has been (would be) the subject of major experiments aiming to detect new particles. Performing this analysis results in significant constraints on the coupling strength of the vector-like quarks.
It has been proposed that two resonances could coincide in the early universe at temperatures $T \sim 0.2 ... 0.5$ GeV: one between two nearly degenerate GeV-scale sterile neutrinos, producing a large lepton asymmetry through freeze-out and decays; another between medium-modified active neutrinos and keV-scale sterile neutrinos, converting the lepton asymmetry into dark matter. Making use of a framework which tracks three sterile neutrinos of both helicities as well as three separate lepton asymmetries, and scanning the parameter space of the GeV-scale species, we establish the degree of fine-…
A diphoton excess with an invariant mass of about 750 GeV has been recently reported by both ATLAS and CMS experiments at LHC. While the simplest interpretation requires the resonant production of a 750 GeV (pseudo)scalar, here we consider an alternative setup, with an additional heavy parent particle which decays into a pair of 750 GeV resonances. This configuration improves the agreement between the 8 TeV and 13 TeV data. Moreover, we include a dark matter candidate in the form of a Majorana fermion which interacts through the 750 GeV portal. The invisible decays of the light resonance help …
We propose a new scenario to produce the superheavy dark matter based on the inflationary universe. In our scenario, the inflaton couples to both a boson and a stable fermion. Although the fermion is produced by the inflaton decay after inflation, almost energy density of the inflaton is transmitted into the radiation by parametric resonance which causes the explosively copious production of the boson. We show that the fermion produced by the inflaton decay can be the superheavy dark matter, whose abundance in the present universe coincides with the critical density. We also present two explic…
We study dark matter at the MSSM pseudoscalar Higgs resonance (A-funnel), which is one of the few remaining MSSM thermal dark matter candidates in the $100-1000$ GeV range safe from direct detection constraints. To illustrate the various factors at play, this study is performed in two contrasting set-ups: a bottom-up phenomenological MSSM (pMSSM) approach that allows significant freedom, and the top-down, highly constrained Yukawa unified $SO(10)$ GUT model. In the pMSSM, for $μ> 0$, the entire parameter space lies above the coherent neutrino background and mostly within reach of XENON1T and L…

The dark matter annihilation rate at small relative velocities can be amplified by a large boost factor using various mechanisms, including Sommerfeld enhancement, resonance enhancement, and Breit-Wigner enhancement. These mechanisms all involve a resonance near the threshold for a pair of dark matter particles. We point out that if the resonance is in the S-wave channel, the mechanisms are equivalent sufficiently near the resonance and they are constrained by universal two-body physics. The amplified annihilation rate requires a corresponding amplification of the elastic scattering cross sect…
Spectroscopic methods allow to measure energy differences with unrivaled precision. In the case of gravity resonance spectroscopy, energy differences of different gravitational states are measured without recourse to the electromagnetic interaction. This provides a very pure and background free look at gravitation and topics related to the central problem of dark energy and dark matter at short distances. In this article we analyse the effect of additional dark energy scalar symmetron fields, a leading candidate for a screened dark energy field, and place limits in a large volume of parameter …
We study the local effects of an external time-dependent magnetic field on axion-like particles assuming they are all the dark matter of the universe. We find that under suitable conditions the amplitude of the dark matter field can resonate parametrically. The resonance depends on the velocity of the axion-like particles and scales quadratically with the strength} of the external magnetic field, $\fracρ{ρ_{DM}} \sim {B_0}^3$. By considering typical experimental benchmark values, we find the resonance could amplify around two orders of magnitude the local energy density stored in the dark matt…
We consider the possibility of interpreting the recently reported diphoton excess at 750 GeV as a spin-two massive particle (such as a Kaluza-Klein graviton in warped extra-dimensions) which serves as a mediator to Dark Matter via its gravitational couplings to the dark sector and to the Standard Model (SM). We model non-universal couplings of the resonance to gauge bosons in the SM and to Dark Matter as a function on their localization in the extra dimension. We find that scalar, fermion or vector dark matter can saturate the dark matter relic density by the annihilation of dark matter into a…
We analyze the potential dark matter implications of LHC events with missing transverse momentum and a resonance, such as a Z', decaying to a pair of jets or leptons. This final state contains significant discovery potential, but has not yet been examined in detail by the LHC experiments. We introduce models of Z' production in association with dark matter particles, propose reconstruction and selection strategies, and estimate the sensitivity of the current LHC dataset.
Motivated by the recently reported diphoton resonance at 750 GeV, we study a new axion-like bosonic portal model of dark matter physics. When the resonance particle is identified as the pseudo-scalar mediator, via which the standard model sector would interact with the dark matter sector, the data from collider physics would provide profound implications to dark matter phenomenology. In this paper, we first identify the preferred parameter space of the suggested portal model from the results of the LHC run with $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV, and then we examine the dark matter signature taking into accoun…
We show that the presence of nearby Coulombic resonances at finite energy could lead to the enhancement of the dark matter annihilation cross section at specific non-zero velocities correlated with the mass splitting between the dark matter pair and that of the resonance. If one of these resonant velocities approximately matches the velocity of dark matter in our local neighbourhood, we would see this enhancement in existing indirect-detection measurements, such as the measurements of the continuum photon spectrum made by HESS and Fermi-LAT. We explore this effect in the context of pure Higgsi…
The Breit-Wigner enhancement of the thermally averaged annihilation cross section <σv> is shown to provide a large boost factor when the dark matter annihilation process nears a narrow resonance. We explicitly demonstrate the evolution behavior of the Breit-Wigner enhanced <σv> as the function of universe temperature for both the physical and unphysical pole cases. It is found that both of the cases can lead an enough large boost factor to explain the recent PAMELA, ATIC and PPB-BETS anomalies. We also calculate the coupling of annihilation process, which is useful for an appropriate model bui…
A Higgs-like resonance with a mass of approximately 750 GeV has recently been observed at the LHC in its diphoton decay. If this state is not simply a statistical fluctuation which will disappear with more data, it will have important implications not only for particle physics but also for cosmology. In this note, we analyze the implications of such a resonance for the dark matter (DM). Assuming a spin 1/2 DM particle, we first verify that indeed the correct relic density can be obtain for a wide range of the particle mass and weak scale coupling that are compatible with present data. We then …
In light of the recent CDF report on the excess in the Wjj channel, we analyze (non)supersymmetric U(1)_B x U(1)_L model, interpreting the dijet peak as a leptophobic U(1)_B gauge boson. If this excess is confirmed, it has an interesting implication for the baryonic cold dark matter (CDM) in the model: there should be light CDM with a few GeV mass, and direct detection cross section at the level of a few x 10^{-2} pb.
If ultra-light dark matter (ULDM) exists and couples to neutrinos, the neutrino oscillation probability might be significantly altered by a parametric resonance. This resonance can occur if the typical frequency of neutrino flavor-oscillations $Δm^2/(2E)$, where $Δm^2$ is the mass-squared difference of the neutrinos and $E$ is the neutrino energy, matches the oscillation frequency of the ULDM field, determined by its mass, $m_ϕ$. The resonance could lead to observable effects even if the ULDM coupling is very small, and even if its typical oscillation period, given by $τ_ϕ=2π/m_ϕ$, is much sho…
We consider the prospect of lightest neutralino (${\tilde χ}_1^0$) as a dark matter candidate in the light of recent interesting observations from the XENON100 and CDMS-II experiments in minimal supergravity framework with large $\tanβ$ and non-vanishing $A_0$. Within the WMAP satisfied zone, there is a large direct detection reach of lighter ${\tilde χ}_1^0$ in the lighter Higgs boson mediated resonance annihilation domain of the above scenario. It is seen that the heavier Higgs boson plays a dominating role in the ${\tilde χ}_1^0-p$ cross-section in the associated zone of parameter space in …
Vector bosons heavier than $10^{-22}$ eV can be viable dark matter candidates with distinctive experimental signatures. Ultralight dark matter generally requires a non-thermal origin to achieve the observed density, while still behaving like a pressureless fluid at late times. We show that such a production mechanism naturally occurs for vectors whose mass originates from a dark Higgs. If the dark Higgs has a large field value after inflation, the energy in the Higgs field can be efficiently transferred to vectors through parametric resonance. Computing the resulting abundance and spectra requ…
One-loop electroweak corrections to the annihilation cross-sections of dark matter in the Higgs resonance region of the inert doublet model (IDM) are investigated. The procedure of how to implement the width of the Higgs in order to regularise the amplitude both at tree-level and at one-loop together with the renormalisation of a key parameter of the model, are thoroughly scrutinised. The discussions go beyond the application to the relic density calculation and also beyond the IDM so that addressing these technical issues can help in a wider context. We look in particular at the dominant chan…
New Z' gauge bosons arise in many extensions of the Standard Model and predict resonances in the dilepton invariant mass spectrum. Searches for such resonances therefore provide important constraints on many models of new physics, but the resulting bounds are often calculated without interference effects. In this work we show that the effect of interference is significant and cannot be neglected whenever the Z' width is large (for example because of an invisible contribution). To illustrate this point, we implement and validate the most recent 139 fb$^{-1}$ dilepton search from ATLAS and obtai…
Many models containing particles which are candidates for dark matter, assume the standard model particles and the dark matter candidates are mediated by a spin-0 particle. At the LHC, one can use these models for dark matter searches. One of the possible approaches for the search of these models is by considering the decay of the spin-0 particle to a pair of $t\bar{t}$, thus modifying the pattern of the top quark pair invariant mass spectrum. This search suggests a good sensitivity in a parameter space different than the more traditional searches. We examine this sensitivity and put limits on…
We propose a LHC search for dilepton resonances in association with large missing energy as a generic probe of TeV dark sector models. Such resonances can occur if the dark sector includes a U(1) gauge boson, or Z', which kinetically mixes with the Standard Model U(1). For small mixing, direct 2 to 1 production of the Z' is not visible in standard resonance searches due to the large Drell-Yan background. However, there may be significant production of the Z' boson in processes involving other dark sector particles, resulting in final states with a Z' resonance and missing transverse momentum. …

We provide theoretical arguments that dark matter axions from the galactic halo that pass through the earth may generate a small observable signal in resonant S/N/S Josephson junctions. The corresponding interaction process is based on uniqueness of the gauge-invariant axion Josephson phase angle modulo 2 pi and is predicted to produce a small Shapiro step-like feature without externally applied microwave radiation when the Josephson frequency resonates with the axion mass. A resonance signal of so far unknown origin observed in [C. Hoffmann et al. PRB 70, 180503(R) (2004)] is consistent with …
