Static spherically symmetric black hole solution is obtained in the framework of Einstein-dilaton theory with nonlinear Maxwell and Yang-Mills fields of power-law type. It is observed that black hole might have two horizons similarly as it takes place for linear gauge fields case. Thermodynamics of the black hole is studied, namely the behaviour of temperature is examined and the first law is written. The concept of extended phase space is also utilized, namely we have written and analyzed the equation of state for the black hole and examined the Gibbs free energy. The Gibbs free energy shows that there is the first order phase transition if the temperature or the pressure are below their critical values and coupling parameters are relatively small. Increasing of the coupling parameters might give rise to appearance of a domain with the zeroth order phase transition, the existence of the latter one is specific for other types of dilatonic black holes. Prigogine-Defay ratio has been calculated, it shows that at the critical point the phase transition is not exactly of the second order, it is closer to the glass-type phase transition since the Prigogine-Defay ratio is not equal to one.
In this paper we analyze the perturbations of the Kerr-Newman dilatonic black hole background. For this purpose we perform a double expansion in both the background electric charge and the wave parameters of the relevant quantities in the Newman-Penrose formalism. We then display the gravitational, dilatonic and electromagnetic equations, which reproduce the static solution (at zero order in the wave parameter) and the corresponding wave equations in the Kerr background (at first order in the wave parameter and zero order in the electric charge). At higher orders in the electric charge one enc…
In this paper we continue the analysis of our previous papers and study the affect of the existence of a non-trivial dilaton background on the propagation of electromagnetic waves in the Kerr-Newman dilatonic black hole space-time. For this purpose we again employ the double expansion in both the background electric charge and the wave parameters of the relevant quantities in the Newman-Penrose formalism and then identify the first order at which the dilaton background enters the Maxwell equations. We then assume that gravitational and dilatonic waves are negligible (at that order in the charg…
We examine cancellation of long-range forces in Einstein-Maxwell-Dilatonic system. Several conditions of the equilibrium of two charged masses in general relativity is found by many authors. These conditions are altered by taking account of dilatonic field. Under the new condition, we show cancellation of $1/r^2$ potential using Feynman diagrams.
We study spherically and axially symmetric monopoles of the SU(2) Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs-dilaton (EYMHD) system with a new coupling between the dilaton field and the covariant derivative of the Higgs field. This coupling arises in the study of (4+1)-dimensional vortices in the Einstein-Yang-Mills (EYM) system.
We construct and study general static, spherically symmetric, magnetically charged solutions in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity in four dimensions. That is, taking Einstein gravity coupled to a ${\rm U}(1)$ gauge field and a massless dilaton$\unicode{x2014}$e.g., the action in the low-energy limit of string theory or Kaluza-Klein reduction$\unicode{x2014}$with arbitrary dilaton coupling, we build a three-parameter family of objects characterized by their mass, charge, and dilaton flux, generalizing the well known Garfinkle-Horowitz-Strominger black hole. We analyze the near-extremal and near-…
Unlike Einstein gravity, dilaton-Maxwell gravity with matter is renormalizable in $2+ε$ dimensions and has a smooth $ε\to 0$ limit.By performing a renormalization- group study of this last theory we show that the gravitational coupling constant $G$ has a non-trivial,ultraviolet stable fixed point (asymptotic freedom) and that the dilatonic coupling functions (including the dilatonic potential) exhibit also a real, non-trivial fixed point. At such point the theory represents a standard charged string-inspired model.Stability and the gauge dependence of the fixed-point solution is discussed. It i…
Long-range forces up to next-to-leading order are computed in the framework of the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton system by means of a semiclassical approach to gravity. As has been recently shown, this approach is effective if one of the masses under consideration is significantly greater than all the energies involved in the system. Further, we obtain the condition for the equilibrium of charged masses in the system.
By employing the moduli space approximation, we analytically calculate the gravitational wave signatures emitted upon the merger of two extremally charged dilatonic black holes. We probe several values of the dilatonic coupling constant $a$, and find significant departures from the Einstein--Maxwell ($a=0$) counterpart studied in arXiv:1704.08520. For (low energy) string theory black holes $(a=1)$ there are no coalescence orbits and only a memory effect is observed, whereas for an intermediate value of the coupling $(a=1/\sqrt{3})$ the late-time merger signature becomes exponentially suppresse…
We discuss the low-energy effective string theory when moduli of the compactified manifold are present. Assuming a nontrivial coupling of the moduli to the Maxwell tensor, we find a class of regular black hole solutions. Both the thermodynamical and the geometrical structure of these solutions are discussed
We present a method to generate static solutions in the Einstein-Maxwell system with a (phantom) dilaton field in $n(\ge 4)$-dimensions, based upon the symmetry of the target space for the nonlinear sigma model. Unlike the conventional Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton system, there appears a critical value of the coupling constant for a phantom dilaton field. In the noncritical case, the target space is $\mathbb R\times {\rm SL}(2,\mathbb R)/H$ with the maximal subgroup $H=\{{\rm SO}(2), {\rm SO}(1,1)\}$, whereas in the critical case the target space becomes a symmetric pp-wave and the corresponding K…
We study gravitating monopoles and non-abelian black holes of SU(2) Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs theory coupled to a massless dilaton. The domain of existence of these solutions decreases with increasing dilaton coupling constant. The critical solutions of this system are Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton solutions.
In this paper, we investigate the critical behavior of charged black holes of Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity in the presence of two Liouville-type potentials which make the solution asymptotically neither flat nor AdS and has a parameter $% Λ$ treated as a thermodynamic quantity that can vary. We obtain a Smarr-type relation for charged dilatonic black holes and find out that the volume is different from the geometrical volume. We study the analogy of the Van der Waals liquid-gas system with the charged dilatonic black hole system while we treat the black hole charge as a fixed external para…
The rotating linear dilatonic black hole is an asymptotically non-flat solution to Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton-Axion gravity theory due to the existence of non-trivial matter fields. We have analytically studied the wave equation of scalar field in this background and shown that the radial wave equation can be solved in terms of hypergeometric function. By determining the ingoing and the outgoing fluxes at the asymptotic infinity, we have found the analytical expressions for reflection coefficient and greybody factor for certain scalar modes. In the high frequency regime, we obtain the Hawking te…
In this note we present (electrically) charged dilatonic black ring solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory in five dimensions and we consider their physical properties. These solutions are static and as in the neutral case possess a conical singularity. We show how one may remove the conical singularity by application of a Harrison transformation, which physically corresponds to supporting the charged ring with an electric field. Finally, we discuss the slowly rotating case for arbitrary dilaton coupling.
We find a nonsupersymmetric dilatonic deformation of $AdS_5$ geometry as an exact nonsingular solution of the type IIB supergravity. The dual gauge theory has a different Yang-Mills coupling in each of the two halves of the boundary spacetime divided by a codimension one defect. We discuss the geometry of our solution in detail, emphasizing the structure of the boundary, and also study the string configurations corresponding to Wilson loops. We also show that that the background is stable under small scalar perturbations.
We investigate the effect of a constant threshold correction to a general non-extreme, static, spherically symmetric, electrically charged black hole solution of the dilatonic Einstein-Maxwell Lagrangian, with an arbitrary coupling $β$ between the electromagnetic tensor and the dilaton field. For a small $β$, an exact analytical solution is obtained. For an arbitrary $β$, a close form solution, up to first order in the threshold correction, of the metric and the dilaton are presented. In the extremal limit, the close form solution is reduced to an exact analytical form.
Kerner and Mann's recent work shows that, for an uncharged and non-rotating black hole, its Hawking temperature can be exactly derived by fermions tunnelling from its horizons. In this paper, our main work is to improve the analysis to deal with charged fermion tunnelling from the general dilatonic black holes, specifically including the charged, spherically symmetric dilatonic black hole, the rotating Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton-Axion (EMDA) black hole and the rotating Kaluza-Klein (KK) black hole. As a result, the correct Hawking temperatures are well recovered by charged fermions tunnelling fr…
We study Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity models in four-dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime which admit the Reissner-Nordstrom (RN) black hole solution. We show that below a critical temperature the AdS-RN solution becomes unstable against scalar perturbations and the gravitational system undergoes a phase transition. We show using numerical calculations that the new phase is a charged dilatonic black hole. Using the AdS/CFT correspondence we discuss the phase transition in the dual field theory both for non-vanishing temperatures and in the extremal limit. The extremal solution has a …
According to the gauge/gravity duality, the Van der Waals transition of charged AdS black holes in extended phase space is conjectured to be dual to a renormalization group flow on the space of field theories. So exploring the Van der Waals transition is potentially valuable for studying holographic properties of charged black hole thermodynamics. There are different transition behaviors for charged dilatonic AdS black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton (EMD) theory with string-inspired potential with different dilaton coupling constants in diverse dimensions. In this work, we find a special cl…
This is a brief review of the main properties of sphalerons in various theories with a Yang--Mills field. Talk given at the Heat Kernel Techniques and Quantum Gravity, Winnipeg, Canada, August 2-6, 1994.
The Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter black holes of standard Einstein-Maxwell theory with a cosmological constant have no analogue in dilatonic theories with a Liouville potential. The only exception are the solutions of maximal mass, the Charged Nariai solutions. We show that the structure of the solution space of the Dilatonic Charged Nariai black holes is quite different from the non-dilatonic case. Its dimensionality depends on the exponential coupling constants of the dilaton. We discuss the possibility of pair creating such black holes on a suitable background. We find conditions for the exi…
Taking a thermodynamic perspective, we study the weak gravity conjecture in the context of 4D Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory. We find closed-form expressions for the corrected thermodynamic quantities in the presence of four-derivative terms in the action, and in particular the charge-to-mass ratio and entropy, for several families of solutions of special magnetic-to-electric charge ratio or dilaton coupling constant. Assuming that dyonic black holes themselves are the conjectured charged states, this places constraints on the Wilson coefficients of the theory which we show are satisfied unde…
We study the effective action in 2D dilaton-Maxwell quantum gravity. Working with the one-loop renormalizable subset of such theories, we construct the improved effective Lagrangian which contains curvature under logarithm. This effective Lagrangian leads to new classical dilatonic gravity inspired by quantum effects. The static black holes (BH) solutions which may play the role of a remnant after the Hawking radiation for such theory are carefully investigated. The effective Lagrangian for Gross-Neveu-dilaton gravity is also constructed (in 1/N expansion).
We studied in detail the propagation of a massive tachyonic scalar field in the background of a five-dimensional ($5D$) Einstein--Yang--Mills--Born--Infeld--dilaton black string: the massive Klein--Gordon equation was solved, exactly. Next we obtained complete analytical expressions for the greybody factor, absorption cross-section, and decay-rate for the tachyonic scalar field in the geometry under consideration. The behaviors of the obtained results are graphically represented for different values of the theory's free parameters. We also discuss why tachyons should be used instead of ordinar…
Explicit dyonic dilaton black holes of the four-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory are known only for two particular values of the dilaton coupling constant $a =1,\sqrt{3}$, while for other $a$ numerical evidence was presented earlier about existence of extremal dyons in theories with the discrete sequence of dilaton couplings $a=\sqrt{n(n+1)/2}$ with integer $n$. Apart from the lower members $n=1,\,2$, this family of theories does not have motivation from supersymmetry or higher dimensions, and so far the above quantization rule has not been derived analytically. We fill this gap sho…
AdS black holes show richer transition behaviors in extended phase space by assuming the cosmological constant and its conjugate quantity to behave like thermodynamic pressure and thermodynamic volume. We study the extended thermodynamics of charged dilatonic AdS black holes in a class of Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theories that can be embedded in gauged supergravities in various dimensions. We find that the transition behaviors of higher dimensional dilatonic AdS black holes are different from the four dimensional counterparts, and new transition behaviors emerges in higher dimensions. First, t…
We discuss properties and interpretation of recently found globally regular and black hole solutions of a Einstein-Yang-Mills-dilaton theory. Talk given at the 15th annual MRST meeting on High Energy Physics, Syracuse University, NY, May 14-15, 1993.
We investigate bulk and holographic features of finite-temperature black brane solutions of 4D anti-de Sitter Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton-gravity (EMDG). We construct, numerically, black branes endowed with non trivial scalar hairs for broad classes of EMDG. We consider both exponential and power-law forms for the coupling functions, as well as several charge configurations: purely electric, purely magnetic and dyonic solutions. At finite temperature the field theory holographically dual to these black brane solutions has a rich and interesting phenomenology reminiscent of electron motion in meta…
Magnetic field and momentum dissipation are key ingredients in describing condensed matter systems. We include them in gauge/gravity and systematically explore the bottom-up panorama of holographic IR effective field theories based on bulk Einstein-Maxwell Lagrangians plus scalars. The class of solutions here examined appear insufficient to capture the phenomenology of charge transport in the cuprates. We analyze in particular the temperature scaling of the resistivity and of the Hall angle. Keeping an open attitude, we illustrate weak and strong points of the approach.
A nontopological soliton solution of dilaton-Maxwell theory describes a domain wall-like solution which confines magnetic flux in its core [G.W. Gibbons and C.G. Wells, Class. Quant. Grav. 11, 2499 (1994)]. Since the solution is not stabilized by a nontrivial topology of the vacuum manifold, it is interesting to see if the static solution is stable against small fluctuations. We consider the stability of the solution in response to small fluctuations in the scalar and magnetic fields. It is determined that the ansatz solution does indeed exhibit stability.
Two models of dilatonic gravity are investigated: (i) dilaton-Yang-Mills gravity and (ii) higher-derivative dilatonic gravity. Both are renormalizable in $2+ε$ dimensions and have a smooth limit for $ε\rightarrow 0$. The corresponding one-loop effective actions and beta-functions are found. Both theories are shown to possess a non-trivial ultraviolet fixed point ---for all dilatonic couplings--- in which the gravitational constant is asymptotically free. It is shown that in the regime of asymptotic freedom the matter central charge can be significantly increased by two different mechanisms ---…
We study the 5D static Einstein-Maxwell equations with a dilaton field. We construct an infinte number of solutions by using a soliton technique. We study the rod structure of 2-soliton solution and show the 5D dilatonic black ring and black hole solutions are included.
Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory with non-trivial dilaton potential is known to admit asymptotically flat and (Anti-)de Sitter charged black hole solutions. We investigate the conditions for the presence of horizons as function of the parameters mass $M$, charge $Q$ and dilaton coupling strength $α$. We observe that there is a value of $α$ which separate two regions, one where the black hole is Reissner-Nordström-like from a region where it is Schwarzschild-like. We find that for de Sitter and small non-vanishing $α$, the extremal case is not reached by the solution. We also discuss the attract…
Spherical black hole (BH) solutions in Einstein-Maxwell-scalar (EMS) models wherein the scalar field is non-minimally coupled to the Maxwell invariant by some coupling function are discussed. We suggest a classification for these models into two classes, based on the properties of the coupling function, which, in particular, allow, or not, the Reissner-Nordström (RN) BH solution of electrovacuum to solve a given model. Then, a comparative analysis of two illustrative families of solutions, one belonging to each class is performed: $dilatonic$ versus $scalarised$ BHs. By including magnetic char…
We investigate extremal charged black hole solutions in the four-dimensional string frame Gauss-Bonnet gravity with the Maxwell field and the dilaton. Without curvature corrections, the extremal electrically charged dilatonic black holes have singular horizon and zero Bekenstein entropy. When the Gauss-Bonnet term is switched on, the horizon radius expands to a finite value provided curvature corrections are strong enough. Below a certain threshold value of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling the extremal black hole solutions cease to exist. Since decreasing Gauss-Bonnet coupling corresponds to decreasi…
In this paper, we investigate the influence of the angular momentum of a charged particle around non-extremal and extremal Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton-Axion black holes on the Lyapunov exponent. The angular momentum's ranges and spatial regions where the bound of the exponent is violated are found for certain values of the rotation parameter and dilatonic constant of the black holes. This violation always exists when the rotation parameter is large enough and the rotation directions of the particle is opposite to those of the black holes. The spatial regions outside the extermal black hole for th…
Recently, spontaneous scalarization of charged black holes has attracted a great deal of attention and motivated several studies of Einstein-Maxwell-scalar models. These studies have, however, only considered a massless and non-self-interacting scalar field. In this work a more realistic treatment of the problem is considered by studying the effects of scalar field mass and self-interacting terms on spontaneous scalarization in Einstein-Maxwell-scalar models, and on the string theory motivated dilatonic black hole. We assess the domains of existence of the black hole solutions, thermodynamic p…
The action for a class of three-dimensional dilaton-gravity theories, with an electromagnetic Maxwell field and a cosmological constant, can be recast in a Brans-Dicke-Maxwell type action, with its free $ω$ parameter. For a negative cosmological constant, these theories have static, electrically charged, and spherically symmetric black hole solutions. Those theories with well formulated asymptotics are studied through a Hamiltonian formalism, and their thermodynamical properties are found. The theories studied are general relativity, a dimensionally reduced cylindrical four-dimensional general…
We discuss the properties and interpretation of a discrete sequence of a static spherically symmetric solutions of the Yang-Mills-dilaton theory. This sequence is parametrized by the number $n$ of zeros of a component of the gauge field potential. It is demonstrated that solutions with odd $n$ posses all the properties of the sphaleron. It is shown that there are normalizable fermion zero modes in the background of these solutions. The question of instability is critically analysed.
Spacetimes that include a boundary at infinity have a non-trivial topology. The homology of the background influences gauge fields living on them and lead to topological charges. We investigate the charges and fluxes of fields over a Taub--NUT background in Einstein--Maxwell dilaton--axion gravity, by using the relative homology and de Rham cohomology. It turns out that the electromagnetic sector is devoid of restrictions from a topological viewpoint. There are, however, flux quanta for the axion and dilaton fields. These results are obtained from the absolute homology of the spacetime boundar…
Electromagnetic duality is discussed in the context of Einstein-Maxwell-scalar (EMS) models including axionic-type couplings. This family of models introduces two non-minimal coupling functions $f(ϕ)$ and $g(ϕ)$, depending on a real scalar field $ϕ$. Interpreting the scalar field as a medium, one naturally defines constitutive relations as in relativistic non-linear electrodynamics. Requiring these constitutive relations to be invariant under the $SO(2)$ electromagnetic duality rotations of Maxwell's theory, defines 1-parameter, closed $\textit{duality orbits}$ in the space of EMS models, conn…
We study cosmology on a conical brane in the six-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton system, where the extra dimensions are compactified by a magnetic flux. We systematically construct exact cosmological solutions using the fact that the system is equivalently described by (6+n)-dimensional pure Einstein-Maxwell theory via dimensional reduction. In particular, we find a power-law inflationary solution for a general dilatonic coupling. When the dilatonic coupling is given by that of Nishino-Sezgin chiral supergravity, this reduces to the known solution which is not inflating. The power-law sol…
We give a cosmological spinning multi-`black-hole' solution in the Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton-Axion theory with a positive cosmological constant. This solution is the cosmological dilatonic Israel-Wilson-Perjes solution and describes the collision of several spinning `black-holes'.
We review (mainly) quantum effects in the theories where gravity sector is described by metric and dilaton. The one-loop effective action for dilatonic gravity in two and four dimensions is evaluated. Renormalization group equations are constructed. The conformal anomaly and induced effective action for 2d and 4d dilaton coupled theories are found. It is applied to study of quantum aspects of black hole thermodynamics, like calculation of Hawking radiation and quantum corrections to black hole parameters and investigation of quantum instability for such objects with multiple horizons. The use …
This study revisits the absorption and scattering process by which a massless scalar field impinges on a charged dilatonic black hole. First, we review the classical analysis to obtain the deflection angle and the differential scattering cross-section. Then, using the partial wave method, we determine the total absorption cross-section numerically in terms of the decoupling parameter called $Mω$, finding that the amplitude of the dilatonic black hole is lower than the Reissner-Nordström one for mild frequencies. In the high-frequency limit, the absorption cross-section exhibits two different c…
In this paper, we consider a linearly charged dilatonic black holes and study their thermodynamical behavior in the context of phase transition and thermodynamic geometry. We show that, depending on the values of the parameters, these type of black holes may enjoy two types of phase transition. We also find that there are three critical behaviors near the critical points for these black holes; nonphysical unstable to physical stable, large to small, and small to large black holes phase transition. Next, we employ a thermodynamical metric for studying thermodynamical geometry of these black hol…
In this work a static spherically symmetric black hole's solution within the Einstein-Maxwell-Yang-Mills-dilaton theory is derived. The obtained solution is examined, in particular, we have calculated the Kretschmann scalar which allowed us to characterize singularity points. Using the obtained black hole's solution we have studied its thermodynamics. Namely, the temperature was calculated, the first law was written, and the heat capacity was studied. The extended thermodynamics approach is utilized to obtain the equation of state. Within the extended thermodynamics the Gibbs free energy is de…
An infinite family of cornucopions is found within the $SU(2)\times U(1)$ sector of the 4--d heterotic string low-energy theory, the extremal $U(1)$ magnetic dilatonic black hole being the lowest energy state. Non-abelian cornucopions are interpreted as sphalerons associated with potential barriers separating topologically distinct Yang-Mills vacua on the $U(1)$ cornucopion background. A mass formula for non-abelian dilatonic black holes is derived, and the free energy is calculated through the Euclidean action.
Using the blackfold approach, we study new classes of higher-dimensional rotating black holes with electric charges and string dipoles, in theories of gravity coupled to a 2-form or 3-form field strength and to a dilaton with arbitrary coupling. The method allows to describe not only black holes with large angular momenta, but also other regimes that include charged black holes near extremality with slow rotation. We construct explicit examples of electric rotating black holes of dilatonic and non-dilatonic Einstein-Maxwell theory, with horizons of spherical and non-spherical topology. We also…
A class of exact static spherically symmetric solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell gravity coupled to a massless scalar field has been obtained in harmonic coordinates of the Minkowski space-time. For each value of the coupling constant $a$, these solutions are characterized by a set of three parameters, the physical mass $μ_0$, the electric charge $Q_0$ and the scalar field parameter $k$. We have found that the solutions for both gravitational and electromagneticfields are not only affected by the scalar field, but also the non-trivial coupling with matter constrains the scalar field itself. In …
We study the $P-V$ critical behaivor of N-dimensional AdS black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-power-Yang-Mills gravity. Our results show the existence of the Van der Waals like small-large black hole phase transitions when taking some special values of charges of the Maxwell and Yang-Mills (YM) fields. Further to calculate the critical exponents of the black holes at the critical point, we find that they are the same as those in the Van der Waals liquid-gas system.
We derive an action describing edge dynamics on interfaces for gauge theories (Maxwell and Yang-Mills) using the path integral. The canonical structure of the edge theory is deduced and the thermal partition function calculated. We test the edge action in several applications. For Maxwell in Rindler space, we recover earlier results, now embedded in a dynamical canonical framework. A second application is 2d Yang-Mills theory where the boundary action becomes just the particle-on-a-group action. Correlators of boundary-anchored Wilson lines in 2d Yang-Mills are matched with, and identified as …
This article reviews recent progress in formulating double-copy constructions for scattering amplitudes in supergravity theories with N=2 supersymmetry in five and four spacetime dimensions. Particular attention is devoted to infinite families of Maxwell-Einstein theories with symmetric and homogeneous target spaces and to Yang-Mills-Einstein theories with compact gauge groups. Extension of the construction to theories with spontaneously-broken gauge symmetry is also discussed.

In Einstein-Maxwell theory black holes are uniquely determined by their mass, their charge and their angular momentum. This is no longer true in Einstein-Yang-Mills theory. We discuss sequences of neutral and charged SU(N) Einstein-Yang-Mills black holes, which are static spherically symmetric and asymptotically flat, and which carry Yang-Mills hair. Furthermore, in Einstein-Maxwell theory static black holes are spherically symmetric. We demonstrate that, in contrast, SU(2) Einstein-Yang-Mills theory possesses a sequence of black holes, which are static and only axially symmetric.
