We study angles of multipliers of repelling cycles for hyperbolic rational maps in $\mathbb C(z)$. For a fixed $K \gg 1$, we show that almost all intervals of length $2π/K$ in $(-π,π]$ contain a multiplier angle with the property that the norm of the multiplier is bounded above by a polynomial in $K$.
A parameter $c_0\in\mathbb C$ in the family of quadratic polynomials $f_c(z)=z^2+c$ is a critical point of a period $n$ multiplier, if the map $f_{c_0}$ has a periodic orbit of period $n$, whose multiplier, viewed as a locally analytic function of $c$, has a vanishing derivative at $c=c_0$. We prove that all critical points of period $n$ multipliers equidistribute on the boundary of the Mandelbrot set, as $n\to\infty$.
In the moduli space of degree d polynomials, the set Per\_n(w) of classes [f] for which f admits a cycle of exact period n and multiplier w is known to be an algebraic hypersurface. We prove that, given a complex number w, these hypersurfaces equidistribute towards the bifurcation current as n tends to infinity.
Given a sequence of complex numbers ρ_n, we study the asymptotic distribution of the sets of parameters c ε C such that the quadratic maps z^2 +c has a cycle of period n and multiplier ρ_n. Assume 1/n.log|ρ_n| tends to L. If L {\leq} log 2, they equidistribute on the boundary of the Mandelbrot set. If L > log 2 they equidistribute on the equipotential of the Mandelbrot set of level 2L - 2 log 2.
In this article, we consider a counting problem for orbits of hyperbolic rational maps on the Riemann sphere, where constraints are placed on the multipliers of orbits. Using arguments from work of Dolgopyat, we consider varying and potentially shrinking intervals, and obtain a result which resembles a local central limit theorem for the logarithm of the absolute value of the multiplier and an equidistribution theorem for the holonomies.
We consider isometric actions of lattices in semisimple algebraic groups on (possibly non-compact) homogeneous spaces with (possibly infinite) invariant Radon measure. We assume that the action has a dense orbit, and demonstrate two novel and non-classical dynamical phenomena that arise in this context. The first is the existence of a mean ergodic theorem even when the invariant measure is infinite, which implies the existence of an associated limiting distribution, possibly different than the invariant measure. The second is uniform quantitative equidistribution of all orbits in the space, wh…
Let $M = Γ\backslash \text{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ be a compact quotient of $\text{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ equipped with the normalized Haar measure $\text{vol}$, and let $\{h_t\}_{t \in \mathbb{R}}$ denote the horocycle flow on $M$. Given $p \in M$ and $W \in \mathfrak{sl}_2(\mathbb{R}) \setminus \{0\}$ not parallel to the generator of the horocycle flow, let $γ_{p}^W$ denote the probability measure uniformly distributed along the arc $s \mapsto p \exp(sW)$ for $0\leq s \leq 1$. We establish quantitative estimates for the rate of convergence of $[(h_t)_{\ast} γ_{p}^W](f)$ to $\text{vol}(f)$ for suffici…
In the moduli space of degree d polynomials, we prove the equidistribution of postcritically finite polynomials toward the bifurcation measure. More precisely, using complex analytic arguments and pluripotential theory, we prove the exponential speed of convergence for C 2-observables. This improves results obtained with arithmetic methods by Favre and Rivera-Letellier in the unicritical family and Favre and the first author in the space of degree d polynomials. We deduce from that the equidistribution of hyperbolic parameters with (d -- 1) distinct attracting cycles of given multipliers towar…
We prove $\times a$ $\times b$ measure rigidity for multiplicatively independent pairs when $a\in\mathbb{N}$ and $b>1$ is a ``specified'' real number (the $b$-expansion of $1$ has a tail or bounded runs of $0$'s) under a positive entropy condition. This is done by proving a mean decay of the Fourier series of the point masses average along $\times b$ orbits. We also prove a quantitative version of this decay under stronger conditions on the $\times a$ invariant measure. The quantitative version together with the $\times b$ invariance of the limit measure is a step toward a general Host-type po…
Let $Λ$ be a quasi-projective variety and assume that, either $Λ$ is a subvariety of the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_d$ of degree $d$ rational maps, or $Λ$ parametrizes an algebraic family $(f_λ)_{λ\inΛ}$ of degree $d$ rational maps on $\mathbb{P}^1$. We prove the equidistribution of parameters having $p$ distinct neutral cycles towards the $p$-th bifurcation current letting the periods of the cycles go to $\infty$, with an exponential speed of convergence. We deduce several fundamental consequences of this result on equidistribution and counting of hyperbolic components. A key step of the proof…
Let $K$ be a algebraically closed field of characteristic 0 that is complete with respect to a non-Archimedean absolute value. Let $ϕ\in K(z)$ with $\textrm{deg}(ϕ)\geq 2$. In this paper we establish uniform logarithmic equidistribution of the crucial measures $ν_{ϕ^n}$ attached to the iterates of $ϕ$. These measures were introduced by Rumely in his study of the Minimal Resultant Locus of $ϕ$. Our equidistribution result comes from a bound on the diameter of points in $\textrm{supp}(ν_{ϕ^n})$ that depends only on $n$ and $ϕ$. We also show that the sets $\textrm{MinResLoc}(ϕ^n)$ are bounded ind…
We introduce a new class of adelic heights on the projective line. We estimate their essential minimum and prove a result of equidistribution (at every place) for points of small height with estimates on the speed of convergence. To each rational function R in one variable and defined over a number field K, is associated a normalized height on the algebraic closure of K. We show that these dynamically defined heights are adelic in our sense, and deduce from this equidistribution results for preimages of points under R at every place of K. Our approach follows that of Bilu, and relies on potent…
Let $f$ be a rational function of degree $d>1$ on the projective line over a possibly non-archimedean algebraically closed field. A well-known process initiated by Brolin considers the pullbacks of points under iterates of $f$, and produces an important equilibrium measure. We define the asymptotic Fekete property of pullbacks of points, which means that they mirror the equilibrium measure appropriately. As application, we obtain an error estimate of equidistribution of pullbacks of points for $C^1$-test functions in terms of the proximity of wandering critical orbits to the initial points, an…
We prove quantitative equidistribution results for actions of Abelian subgroups of the $2g+1$ dimensional Heisenberg group acting on compact $2g+1$-dimensional homogeneous nilmanifolds. The results are based on the study of the $C^\infty$-cohomology of the action of such groups, on tame estimates of the associated cohomological equations and on a renormalisation method initially applied by Forni to surface flows and by Forni and the second author to other parabolic flows. As an application we obtain bounds for finite Theta sums defined by real quadratic forms in $g$ variables, generalizing the…
We prove a quantitative equidistribution statement for adelic homogeneous subsets whose stabilizer is maximal and semisimple. Fixing the ambient space, the statement is uniform in all parameters. We explain how this implies certain equidistribution theorems which, even in a qualitative form, are not accessible to measure-classification theorems. As another application, we describe another proof of property tau for arithmetic groups.
In a recent paper (arXiv:1211.6372), Bergelson and Tao proved that if $G$ is a $D$-quasi-random group, and $x$,$g$ are drawn uniformly and independently from $G$, then the quadruple $(g,x,gx,xg)$ is roughly equidistributed in the subset of $G^4$ defined by the constraint that the last two coordinates lie in the same conjugacy class. Their proof gives only a qualitative version of this result. The present notes gives a rather more elementary proof which improves this to an explicit polynomial bound in $D^{-1}$.
The distributional properties of the translation flow on the unit square have been considered in different fields of mathematics, including algebraic geometry and discrepancy theory. One method to quantify equidistribution is to compare the error between the actual time the translation flow spent in specific sets $E \subset [0,1]^2$ to the expected time. In this article, we prove that when $E$ is in the algebra generated by convex sets the error is of order at most $\log(T)^{1+\varepsilon}$ for all but countably many directions. Whenever the direction is badly approximable the bound can be sha…
We prove that a $C^{\infty}$-generic area-preserving diffeomorphism of a closed, oriented surface admits a sequence of equidistributed periodic orbits. This is a quantitative refinement of the recently established generic density theorem for area-preserving surface diffeomorphisms. The proof has two ingredients. The first is a "Weyl law" for PFH spectral invariants, which was used to prove the generic density theorem. The second is a variational argument inspired by the work of Marques-Neves-Song and Irie on equidistribution results for minimal hypersurfaces and three-dimensional Reeb flows, r…
We discuss analogues of the prime number theorem for a hyperbolic rational map f of degree at least two on the Riemann sphere. More precisely, we provide counting estimates for the number of primitive periodic orbits of f ordered by their multiplier, and also obtain equidistribution of the associated holonomies; both estimates have power savings error terms. Our counting and equidistribution results will follow from a study of dynamical zeta functions that have been twisted by characters of $S^1$. We will show that these zeta functions are non-vanishing on a half plane $\Re(s) > δ- ε$, where $…
We prove a quantitative equidistribution result for linear random walks on the torus, similar to a theorem of Bourgain, Furman, Lindenstrauss and Mozes, but without any proximality assumption.
An interesting result of Veech more than 50 years ago is a parity, or mod $2$, version of the Kronecker--Weyl equidistribution theorem concerning the irrational rotation sequence $\{qα\}$, $q=0,1,2,3,\ldots.$ If $α$ is badly approximable and $b\in(0,1)$ satisfies $b\ne\{mα\}$ for any $m\in\mathbb{Z}$, then the parity of cardinalities of the sets $\{1\le q\le N:\{qα\}\in[0,b)\}$ as $N\to\infty$ is evenly distributed. We first answer a question of Veech and establish a stronger form of the mod $n$ analog of his result (Theorem 3.1). Furthermore, for irrational $α$ and $b=\{mα\}$ for some $m\in\m…
We prove a quantitative equidistribution statement for certain adelic homogeneous subsets in positive characteristic. As an application, we describe a proof of property tau for arithmetic groups in this context.
We establish a quantitative adelic equidistribution theorem for a sequence of algebraic zeros divisors on the projective line over the separable closure of a product formula field having small diagonals and small $g$-heights with respect to an adelic normalized weight $g$ in arbitrary characteristic and in possibly non-separable setting, and obtain local proximity estimates between the iterations of a rational function $f\in k(z)$ of degree $>1$ and a rational function $a\in k(z)$ of degree $>0$ over a product formula field $k$ of characteristic $0$, applying this quantitative adelic equidistr…
We establish a quantitative approximation formula of the Lyapunov exponent of a rational function of degree more than one over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$ that is complete with respect to a non-trivial and possibly non-archimedean absolute value, in terms of the multipliers of periodic points of the rational function. This quantifies both our former convergence result over general fields and the one-dimensional version of Berteloot--Dupont--Molino's one over archimedean fields.
We establish the equidistribution of the sequence of the averaged pullbacks of a Dirac measure at any value in $\mathbb{C}\setminus\{0\}$ under the derivatives of the iterations of a polynomials $f\in\mathbb{C}[z]$ of degree more than one towards the $f$-equilibrium (or canonical) measure $μ_f$ on $\mathbb{P}^1$. We also show that for every $C^2$ test function on $\mathbb{P}^1$, the convergence is exponentially fast up to a polar subset of exceptional values in $\mathbb{C}$. A parameter space analog of the latter quantitative result for the monic and centered unicritical polynomials family is …
Let $K$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0 that is complete with respect to a non-archimedean absolute value. We establish a locally uniform approximation formula of the Lyapunov exponent of a rational map $f$ of $\mathbb{P}^1$ of degree $d>1$ over $K$, in terms of the multipliers of $n$-periodic points of $f$, with an explicit control in terms of $n$, $f$ and $K$. As an immediate consequence, we obtain an estimate for the blow-up of the Lyapunov exponent near a pole in one-dimensional families of rational maps over $K$. Combined with our former archimedean version, this non-…
