We completely characterize the first two entries, namely the $(f_0, f_1)$-vector pairs, for $6$-dimension polytopes. We also find the characterization for $7$-dimension polytopes with excess degree greater than $11$ and, we conjecture bounds fulfilled by $(f_0, f_1)$-vector pairs for any $d$-polytope having an excess degree greater than $3d-10$.
Let P be a lattice polytope in R^n, and let P \cap Z^n = {v_1,...,v_N}. If the N + \binom N2 points 2v_1,...,2v_N; v_1+v_2,...v_{N-1}+v_N are distinct, we say that P is a "distinct pair-sum" or "dps" polytope. We show that, if P is a dsp polytope in R^n, then N \le 2^n, and, for every n, we construct dps polytopes in R^n which contain 2^n lattice points. We also discuss the relation between dps polytopes and the study of sums of squares of real polynomials.
This note defines a complete h-vector for convex polytopes, which extends the already known toric (or mpih) h-vector and has many similar properties. Complete means that it encodes the whole of the flag vector. First we define the concept of a generalised h-vector and state some properties that follow. The toric h-vector is given as an example. We then define a complete generalised h-vector, and again state properties. Finally, we show that this complete h-vector and all with similar properties will sometimes have negative coefficients. Most of the proofs, and further investigations, will appe…
The cut polytope of a graph arises in many fields. Although much is known about facets of the cut polytope of the complete graph, very little is known for general graphs. The study of Bell inequalities in quantum information science requires knowledge of the facets of the cut polytope of the complete bipartite graph or, more generally, the complete k-partite graph. Lifting is a central tool to prove certain inequalities are facet inducing for the cut polytope. In this paper we introduce a lifting operation, named triangular elimination, applicable to the cut polytope of a wide range of graphs.…
A basic combinatorial invariant of a convex polytope $P$ is its $f$-vector $f(P)=(f_0,f_1,\dots,f_{\dim P-1})$, where $f_i$ is the number of $i$-dimensional faces of $P$. Steinitz characterized all possible $f$-vectors of $3$-polytopes and Grünbaum characterized the pairs given by the first two entries of the $f$-vectors of $4$-polytopes. In this paper, we characterize the pairs given by the first two entries of the $f$-vectors of $5$-polytopes. The same result was also proved by Pineda-Villavicencio, Ugon and Yost independently.
Graphs (1-skeletons) of Traveling-Salesman-related polytopes have attracted a lot of attention. Pedigree polytopes are extensions of the classical Symmetric Traveling Salesman Problem polytopes (Arthanari 2000) whose graphs contain the TSP polytope graphs as spanning subgraphs (Arthanari 2013). Unlike TSP polytopes, Pedigree polytopes are not "symmetric", e.g., their graphs are not vertex transitive, not even regular. We show that in the graph of the pedigree polytope, the quotient minimum degree over number of vertices tends to 1 as the number of cities tends to infinity.
We consider, for complete bipartite graphs, the convex hulls of characteristic vectors of all matchings, extended by a binary entry indicating whether the matching contains two specific edges. These polytopes are associated to the quadratic matching problems with a single linearized quadratic term. We provide a complete irredundant inequality description, which settles a conjecture by Klein (Ph.D. thesis, TU Dortmund, 2015). In addition, we also derive facetness and separation results for the polytopes. The completeness proof is based on a geometric relationship to a matching polytope of a non…
We define an extension of the toric (middle perversity intersection homology) $g$-vector of a convex polytope $X$. The extended $g(X)$ encodes the whole of the flag vector $f(X)$ of $X$, and so is called complete. We find that for many examples that $g_k(X)\geq 0$ for most $k$ (independent of $X$).
Grünbaum, Barnette, and Reay in 1974 completed the characterization of the pairs $(f_i,f_j)$ of face numbers of $4$-dimensional polytopes. Here we obtain a complete characterization of the pairs of flag numbers $(f_0,f_{03})$ for $4$-polytopes. Furthermore, we describe the pairs of face numbers $(f_0,f_{d-1})$ for $d$-polytopes; this description is complete for even $d\ge6$ except for finitely many exceptional pairs that are "small" in a well-defined sense, while for odd $d$ we show that there are also "large" exceptional pairs. Our proofs rely on the insight that "small" pairs need to be defi…
A lattice path matroid is a transversal matroid corresponding to a pair of lattice paths on the plane. A matroid base polytope is the polytope whose vertices are the incidence vectors of the bases of the given matroid. In this paper, we study facial structures of matroid base polytopes corresponding to lattice path matroids.
We describe an algorithm to enumerate polytopes. This algorithm is then implemented to give a complete classification of combinatorial spheres of dimension 3 with 9 vertices and decide polytopality of those spheres. In particular, we completely enumerate all combinatorial types of 4-dimensional polytopes with 9 vertices. It is shown that all of those combinatorial types are rational: They can be realized with rational coordinates. We find 316014 combinatorial spheres on 9 vertices. Of those, 274148 can be realized as the boundary complex of a four-dimensional polytope and the remaining 41866 a…
This paper is concerned with the linkedness of Cartesian products of complete graphs. A graph with at least $2k$ vertices is {\it $k$-linked} if, for every set of $2k$ distinct vertices organised in arbitrary $k$ pairs of vertices, there are $k$ vertex-disjoint paths joining the vertices in the pairs. We show that the Cartesian product $K^{d_{1}+1}\times K^{d_{2}+1}$ of complete graphs $K^{d_{1}+1}$ and $K^{d_{2}+1}$ is $\floor{(d_{1}+d_{2})/2}$-linked for $d_{1},d_{2}\ge 2$, and this is best possible. %A polytope is said to be {\it $k$-linked} if its graph is $k$-linked. This result is connec…
A complete classification of the $δ$-vectors of lattice polytopes whose normalized volumes are at most $4$ is known. In the present paper, we will classify all the $δ$-vectors of lattice polytopes with normalized volumes $5$.
We completely characterize the faces of the root polytope $\tilde Q_G = \text{conv}\{\mathbf 0, \mathbf e_i - \mathbf e_j\: (i,j) \in E(G)\}$ combinatorially. Our results specialize to state of the art results in a straightforward way.
A result of Haglund implies that the $(q,t)$-bigraded Hilbert series of the space of diagonal harmonics is a $(q,t)$-Ehrhart function of the flow polytope of a complete graph with netflow vector $(-n, 1, \dots, 1)$. We study the $(q,t)$-Ehrhart functions of flow polytopes of threshold graphs with arbitrary netflow vectors. Our results generalize previously known specializations of the mentioned bigraded Hilbert series at $t=1$, $0$, and $q^{-1}$. As a corollary to our results, we obtain a proof of a conjecture of Armstrong, Garsia, Haglund, Rhoades and Sagan about the $(q, q^{-1})$-Ehrhart fun…
We give a complete enumeration of all 2-neighborly 0/1-polytopes of dimension 7. There are 13 959 358 918 different 0/1-equivalence classes of such polytopes. They form 5 850 402 014 combinatorial classes and 1 274 089 different f-vectors. It enables us to list some of their combinatorial properties. In particular, we have found a 2-neighborly polytope with 14 vertices and 16 facets.
We describe a provably complete algorithm for the generation of a tight, possibly exact superset of all combinatorially distinct simple n-facet polytopes in R^d, along with their graphs, f-vectors, and face lattices. The technique applies repeated cutting planes and planar sweeps to a d-simplex. Our generator has implications for several outstanding problems in polytope theory, including conjectures about the number of distinct polytopes, the edge expansion of polytopal graphs, and the d-step conjecture.
We introduce the notion of cracked polytope, and - making use of joint work with Coates and Kasprzyk - construct the associated toric variety $X$ as a subvariety of a non-singular toric variety $Y$ under certain conditions. Restricting to the case in which this subvariety is a complete intersection, we present a sufficient condition for a smoothing of $X$ to exist inside $Y$. We exhibit a relative anti-canonical divisor for this smoothing of $X$, and show that the general member is simple normal crossings.
We present slight refinements of known general lower and upper bounds on sizes of extended formulations for polytopes. With these observations we are able to compute the extension complexities of all 0/1-polytopes up to dimension 4. We provide a complete list of our results including geometric constructions of minimum size extensions for all considered polytopes. Furthermore, we show that all of these extensions have strong properties. In particular, one of our computational results is that every 0/1-polytope up to dimension 4 has a minimum size extension that is also a 0/1-polytope.
We consider compact hyperbolic Coxeter polytopes whose Coxeter diagram contains a unique dotted edge. We prove that such a polytope in d-dimensional hyperbolic space has at most d+3 facets. In view of results of Lannér, Kaplinskaja, Esselmann, and the second author, this implies that compact hyperbolic Coxeter polytopes with a unique pair of non-intersecting facets are completely classified. They do exist only up to dimension 6 and in dimension 8.
The contact polytope of a lattice is the convex hull of its shortest vectors. In this paper we classify the facets of the contact polytope of the Leech lattice up to symmetry. There are 1,197,362,269,604,214,277,200 many facets in 232 orbits.
Bisztriczky defines a multiplex as a generalization of a simplex, and an ordinary polytope as a generalization of a cyclic polytope. This paper presents results concerning the combinatorics of multiplexes and ordinary polytopes. The flag vector of the multiplex is computed, and shown to equal the flag vector of a many-folded pyramid over a polygon. Multiplexes, but not other ordinary polytopes, are shown to be elementary. It is shown that all complete subgraphs of the graph of a multiplex determine faces of the multiplex. The toric h-vectors of the ordinary 5-dimensional polytopes are given. G…
In 2012 Gubeladze (Adv.\ Math.\ 2012) introduced the notion of k-convex-normal polytopes to show that integral polytopes all of whose edges are longer than 4d(d+1) have the integer decomposition property. In the first part of this paper we show that for lattice polytopes there is no difference between k- and (k+1)-convex-normality (for k >= 3) and improve the bound to 2d(d+1). In the second part we extend the definition to pairs of polytopes and show that for rational polytopes P and Q, where the normal fan of P is a refinement of the normal fan of Q, if every edge e_P of P is at least d times…
We give a complete enumeration of all 2-neighborly $d$-polytopes with $d+9$ and less facets. All of them are realized as 0/1-polytopes, except a 6-polytope $P_{6,10,15}$ with 10 vertices and 15 facets, and pyramids over $P_{6,10,15}$. In particular, we update the lower bounds for the number of facets of a 2-neighborly $d$-polytope $P$ and showed that the number of facets of $P$ is not less than the number of its vertices $f_0(P)$ for $f_0(P) \le d + 10$.
Pedigree polytopes are extensions of the classical Symmetric Traveling Salesman Problem polytopes whose graphs (1-skeletons) contain the TSP polytope graphs as spanning subgraphs. While deciding adjacency of vertices in TSP polytopes is coNP-complete, Arthanari has given a combinatorial (polynomially decidable) characterization of adjacency in Pedigree polytopes. Based on this characterization, we study the graphs of Pedigree polytopes asymptotically, for large numbers of cities. Unlike TSP polytope graphs, which are vertex transitive, Pedigree graphs are not even regular. Using an "adjacency …
Our main theoretical result is that, if a simple polytope has a pair of complementary vertices (i.e., two vertices with no facets in common), then it has at least two such pairs, which can be chosen to be disjoint. Using this result, we improve adjacency testing for vertices in both simple and non-simple polytopes: given a polytope in the standard form {x \in R^n | Ax = b and x \geq 0} and a list of its V vertices, we describe an O(n) test to identify whether any two given vertices are adjacent. For simple polytopes this test is perfect; for non-simple polytopes it may be indeterminate, and in…
The degree of a lattice polytope is a notion in Ehrhart theory that was studied quite intensively over the previous years. It is well-known that a lattice polytope has normalized volume one if and only if its degree is zero. Recently, Esterov and Gusev gave a complete classification result of families of $n$ lattice polytopes in $\mathbb{R}^n$ whose mixed volume equals one. Here, we give a reformulation of their result involving the novel notion of a mixed degree that generalizes the degree similar to how the mixed volume generalizes the volume. We discuss and motivate this terminology, and ex…
The (combinatorial) diameter of a polytope $P \subseteq \mathbb R^d$ is the maximum value of a shortest path between a pair of vertices on the 1-skeleton of $P$, that is the graph where the nodes are given by the $0$-dimensional faces of $P$, and the edges are given the 1-dimensional faces of $P$. The diameter of a polytope has been studied from many different perspectives, including a computational complexity point of view. In particular, [Frieze and Teng, 1994] showed that computing the diameter of a polytope is (weakly) NP-hard. In this paper, we show that the problem of computing the diame…
In this paper for any dimension n we give a complete list of lattice convex polytopes in R^n that are regular with respect to the group of affine transformations preserving the lattice.
We report here a computation giving the complete list of facets for the cut polytopes over several very symmetric graphs with $15-30$ edges, including $K_8$, $K_{3,3,3}$, $K_{1,4,4}$, $K_{5,5}$, some other $K_{l,m}$, $K_{1,l,m}$, $Prism_7, APrism_6$, Möbius ladder $M_{14}$, Dodecahedron, Heawood and Petersen graphs. For $K_8$, it shows that the huge lists of facets of the cut polytope $CUTP_8$ and cut cone $CUT_8$, given in [CR] is complete. We also confirm the conjecture that any facet of $CUTP_8$ is adjacent to a triangle facet. The lists of facets for $K_{1,l,m}$ with $(l,m)=(4,4),(3,5),(3,…
We define nondegenerate tropical complete intersections imitating the corresponding definition in complex algebraic geometry. As in the complex situation, all nonzero intersection multiplicity numbers between tropical hypersurfaces defining a nondegenerate tropical complete intersection are equal to 1. The intersection multiplicity numbers we use are sums of mixed volumes of polytopes which are dual to cells of the tropical hypersurfaces. We show that the Euler characteristic of a real nondegenerate tropical complete intersection depends only on the Newton polytopes of the tropical polynomials…
Let $Δ$ be an $n$-dimensional lattice polytope. The smallest non-negative integer $i$ such that $k Δ$ contains no interior lattice points for $1 \leq k \leq n - i$ we call the degree of $Δ$. We consider lattice polytopes of fixed degree $d$ and arbitrary dimension $n$. Our main result is a complete classification of $n$-dimensional lattice polytopes of degree $d=1$. This is a generalization of the classification of lattice polygons $(n=2)$ without interior lattice points due to Arkinstall, Khovanskii, Koelman and Schicho. Our classification shows that the secondary polytope of a lattice polyto…
We investigate arithmetic, geometric and combinatorial properties of symmetric edge polytopes. We give a complete combinatorial description of their facets. By combining Gröbner basis techniques, half-open decompositions and methods for interlacing polynomials we provide an explicit formula for the $h^\ast$-polynomial in case of complete bipartite graphs. In particular, we show that the $h^\ast$-polynomial is $γ$-positive and real-rooted. This proves Gal's conjecture for arbitrary flag unimodular triangulations in this case, and, beyond that, we prove a strengthing due to Nevo and Petersen (20…
A permutation polytope is the convex hull of a group of permutation matrices. In this paper we investigate the combinatorics of permutation polytopes and their faces. As applications we completely classify permutation polytopes in dimensions 2,3,4, and the corresponding permutation groups up to a suitable notion of equivalence. We also provide a list of combinatorial types of possibly occuring faces of permutation polytopes up to dimension four.
A Gelfand-Cetlin polytope is a convex polytope obtained as an image of certain completely integrable system on a partial flag variety. In this paper, we give an equivalent description of the face structure of a GC-polytope in terms of so called the face structure of a ladder diagram. Using our description, we obtain a partial differential equation whose solution is the exponential generating function of f-vectors of GC-polytopes. This solves the open problem (2) posed by Gusev, Kritchenko, and Timorin in [GKT].
The extension complexity of a polytope measures its amenability to succinct representations via lifts. There are several versions of extension complexity, including linear, real semidefinite, and complex semidefinite. We focus on the last of these, for which the least is known, and in particular on understanding which polytopes are complex psd-minimal. We prove the existence of an obstruction to complex psd-minimality which is efficiently computable via lattice membership problems. Using this tool, we complete the classification of complex psd-minimal polygons (geometrically as well as combina…
These lecture notes treat some current aspects of two closely interrelated topics from the theory of convex polytopes: the shapes of f-vectors, and extremal constructions. The first lecture treats 3-dimensional polytopes; it includes a complete proof of the Koebe--Andreev--Thurston theorem, using the variational principle by Bobenko & Springborn (2004). In Lecture 2 we look at f-vector shapes of very high-dimensional polytopes. The third lecture explains a surprisingly simple construction for 2-simple 2-simplicial 4-polytopes, which have symmetric f-vectors. Lecture 4 sketches the geometry of …
The cut polytope ${\rm CUT}(n)$ is the convex hull of the cut vectors in a complete graph with vertex set $\{1,\ldots,n\}$. It is well known in the area of combinatorial optimization and recently has also been studied in a direct relation with admissible correlations of symmetric Bernoulli random variables. That probabilistic interpretation is a starting point of this work in conjunction with a natural binary encoding of the CUT($n$). We show that for any $n$, with appropriate scaling, all vertices of the polytope ${\mathbf 1}$-CUT($n$) encoded as integers are approximately on the line $y= x-1…
We complete the classification of compact hyperbolic Coxeter $d$-polytopes with $d+4$ facets for $d=4$ and $5$. By previous work of Felikson and Tumarkin, the only remaining dimension where new polytopes may arise is $d=6$. We derive a new method for generating the combinatorial type of these polytopes via the classification of point set order types. In dimensions $4$ and $5$, there are $348$ and $51$ polytopes, respectively, yielding many new examples for further study. We furthermore provide new upper bounds on the dimension $d$ of compact hyperbolic Coxeter polytopes with $d+k$ facets for $…
A (convex) polytope $P$ is said to be $2$-level if for every direction of hyperplanes which is facet-defining for $P$, the vertices of $P$ can be covered with two hyperplanes of that direction. The study of these polytopes is motivated by questions in combinatorial optimization and communication complexity, among others. In this paper, we present the first algorithm for enumerating all combinatorial types of $2$-level polytopes of a given dimension $d$, and provide complete experimental results for $d \leqslant 7$. Our approach is inductive: for each fixed $(d-1)$-dimensional $2$-level polytop…
