A wonderful compactification of an orbit under the action of a semi-simple and simply connected group is a smooth projective variety containing the orbit as a dense open subset, and where the added boundary divisor is simple normal crossing. We construct the wonderful compactification of the space of symmetric and symplectic matrices, and investigate its geometry. As an application, we describe the birational geometry of the Kontsevich spaces parametrizing conics in Lagrangian Grassmannians.
We investigate the jumping conics of stable vector bundles $E$ of rank 2 on a smooth quadric surface $Q$ with the first Chern class $c_1=\Oo_Q(-1,-1)$ with respect to the ample line bundle $\Oo_Q(1,1)$. We show that the set of jumping conics of $E$ is a hypersurface of degree $c_2(E)-1$ in $\PP_3^*$. Using these hypersurfaces, we describe moduli spaces of stable vector bundles of rank 2 on $Q$ in the cases of lower $c_2(E)$.
We investigate the jumping conics of stable vector bundles $\Ee$ of rank 2 on a smooth quadric surface $Q$ with the Chern classes $c_1=\Oo_Q(-1,-1)$ and $c_2=4$ with respect to the ample line bundle $\Oo_Q(1,1)$. We describe the set of jumping conics of $\Ee$, a cubic symmetroid in $\PP_3$, in terms of the cohomological properties of $\Ee$. As a consequence, we prove that the set of jumping conics, $S(\Ee)$, uniquely determines $\Ee$. Moreover we prove that the moduli space of such vector bundles is rational.
For any pencil of conics or higher-dimensional quadrics over the rationals, with all degenerate fibres defined over the rationals, we show that the Brauer-Manin obstruction controls weak approximation. The proof is based on the Hasse principle and weak approximation for some special intersections of quadrics, which is a consequence of recent advances in additive combinatorics.
Let $X^o=\mathbb P^3\setminus D$ where $D$ is the union of two quadrics such that their intersection contains a smooth conic, or the union of a smooth quadric surface and two planes, or the union of a smooth cubic surface $V$ and a plane $Π$ such that the intersection $V\capΠ$ contains a line. In all these cases we show that the set of integral points of $X^o$ is potentially dense. We apply the above results to prove that integral points are potentially dense in some log-Fano or in some log-Calabi-Yau threefold.
We complete Mori's program for Kontsevich's moduli space of degree 2 stable maps to Grassmannian of lines. We describe all birational models in terms of moduli spaces (of curves and sheaves), incidence varieties, and Kirwan's partial desingularization.
In noncommutative algebraic geometry, noncommutative quadric hypersurfaces are major objects of study. In this paper, we focus on studying noncommutative conics $\operatorname{Proj_{nc}} A$ embedded into Calabi-Yau quantum projective planes. In particular, we give complete classifications of homogeneous coordinate algebras $A$ of noncommutative conics up to isomorphism of graded algebras, and of noncommutive conics $\operatorname{Proj_{nc}} A$ up to isomorphism of noncommutative schemes.
A conic bundle or quadric bundle in characteristic 2 can have generic fiber which is nowhere smooth over the function field of the base variety. In that case, the generic fiber is called a quasilinear quadric. We solve some of the main problems of birational geometry for quasilinear quadrics. First, if there is a rational map from one quasilinear quadric to another of the same dimension, and also a map back, then the two quadrics are birational. Next, we determine exactly which quasilinear quadrics are ruled, that is, birational over the base field to the product of some variety with the proje…
Given a generic family $Q$ of 2-dimensional quadrics over a smooth 3-dimensional base $Y$ we consider the relative Fano scheme $M$ of lines of it. The scheme $M$ has a structure of a generically conic bundle $M \to X$ over a double covering $X \to Y$ ramified in the degeneration locus of $Q \to Y$. The double covering $X \to Y$ is singular in a finite number of points (corresponding to the points $y \in Y$ such that the quadric $Q_y$ degenerates to a union of two planes), the fibers of $M$ over such points are unions of two planes intersecting in a point. The main result of the paper is a cons…
We give a short review of the algebraic procedure known as deformation quantisation, which replaces a commutative algebra with a non-commutative algebra. We use this framework to examine how the objects known as wavefunctions, as known in the quantum curve literature, arise from deformation quantisation. We give an example in terms of the planar conic $-y+x^2+2 xy + y^2$, and construct an associated wavefunction. We also give an example of the symplectic reduction of a wavefunction, following a procedure from Kontsevich and Soibelman arXiv:1701.09137.
We classify the orbits of nets of conics under the action of the projective linear group and we determine the specializations of these orbits, using geometric and algebraic methods. We study related geometric questions, as the parametrization of planar cubics. We show that Artinian algebras of Hilbert function H=(1,3,3,0) determined by nets, can be smoothed - deformed to a direct sum of fields; and that algebras of Hilbert function H=(1,r,2,0), determined by pencils of quadrics, can also be smoothed. In a Historical Appendix A we describe related work prior to 1977. In an Update Appendix B we …
Let M be the blow--up of a manifold M along a submanifold X. In this paper we present closed formulae for the integral cohomology and the total Chern class of M. As applications we compute the cohomology of the varieties of complete conics and complete quadrices in 3--space, and justify two enumerative results due to Schubert.
Let $ \mathcal{D} = \{D_{1}, \ldots, D_{\ell}\} $ be an arrangement of smooth hypersurfaces with normal crossings on the complex projective space $ \mathbb{P}^{n} $ and let $ Ω^{1}_{\mathbb{P}^{n}}(log \mathcal{D}) $ be the logarithmic bundle attached to it. Our aim is to study the injectivity of the correspondence $ \mathcal{D} \longrightarrow Ω^{1}_{\mathbb{P}^{n}}(log \mathcal{D}) $. In order to do that, we first show that $ Ω^{1}_{\mathbb{P}^{n}}(log \mathcal{D}) $ admits a resolution of length $ 1 $ depending on the degrees and on the equations of $ D_{1}, \ldots, D_{\ell} $. Then, we pro…
The problem of classifying linear systems of conics in projective planes dates back at least to Jordan, who classified pencils (one-dimensional systems) of conics over $\mathbb{C}$ and $\mathbb{R}$ in 1906--1907. The analogous problem for finite fields $\mathbb{F}_q$ with $q$ odd was solved by Dickson in 1908. In 1914, Wilson attempted to classify nets (two-dimensional systems) of conics over finite fields of odd characteristic, but his classification was incomplete and contained some inaccuracies. In a recent article, we completed Wilson's classification of nets of rank one, namely those cont…
